Magellan has fooled me again!

Strengths: The idea looks great on paper. Street mapping performance is better then other waterproof models I've used.

Weakness: Outdoor mode suffers. No hiking capabilities to speak of, while other 'automotive only' units perform better for cheaper.

I bought an explorist XL with the pricey Magellan 'street maps' software years ago and was utterly disgusted by its performance. So when my most recent GPS was stolen from my car, I was shocked to find the Magellan 'Crossover' on the top of the review list for waterproof (actually, only splash-proof in this case) GPS units capable of street routing, as well as mapping on the trail. I was...

Crossover GPS Magellan

Strengths: adequate vehicle navigation

Weakness: No one at the retailer knows how to add marine features.

The marketers at Magellan have come up with an excellent way to tap the spending budgets for husband/father/boyfriend boating gifts. Saying the unit has marine capabilities is convincing for the gift buyer but most vendors don't know how to convert the unit. If you are a wife or daughter researching a GPS that is suitable for boating use, consider an integrated depth finder and GPS specifically...

good idea bad technology

Strengths: All-in-One

Weakness: technology & maps

very disappointed with their maps. I called Tech support (India) and they told me they were 2006 maps. My home subdivision was established in 2003, yet none of it is included. Another friend lives in an older part of town (built in the late 70's early 80's) The Crossover cannot find him or any of his direct neighbors. I had issues with on-ramps listed where they are not, also a change done by our...

Crossover crosses over

Strengths: Fast acquisition time. Accurate. Color display. Clear voice. Good multi-use unit for the price.

Weakness: Limited documentation. Difficult to load waypoints from PC. Self cancels waypoint when close.

I purchased this GPS after doing some shopping. I wanted a GPS that I could use for fishing marking hot spots. The ability to use it for turn by turn navigation and outdoor use caught my eye. It's marked as water resistant not waterproof. So don't go dunking this unit. I started to Geocache with this unit. It gets me close but what what is really annoying is once you are about 25 ft. from your...

Great... within North America only

Strengths: All in one : Auto - hike - Sailing; compact - 4 options for routes - 40$ per year to get the real time traffic info

Weakness: US only for the US version : European map CANNOT be used Magellan website

A great unit for these who do not intend to use it outside north America. Once you do the free software upgrade, map and menu are Magellan latest (like the Maestro's). Indication mention right and left side, unlike what is mentioned in other reviews. I loved it... but the maps and charts you can buy are just to less than 100 MB Magellan do not flash into the base unit to get some more money from...
