Toshiba DVR620
3 Star Review  productwiki.com - Jul 20, 2009

The Toshiba DR620 is a DVD recorder announced at the CES 2009 that features recording and playback abilities for DVD-R, -RW, +R, and +RW media disc formats. The third of four Toshiba D digital video recorders, the Toshiba DR620 is a competitive peer to the DR570 in that it features a DVD/VCR combination recorder (versus just DVD), but ditches its peers ATSC/QAM/NTSC tuners. In all other ways, however, the DR620 is practically a duplicate of its peer. For instance, the DR620 also offers HDMI-CEC for syncing entertainment devices to one remote. In addition, the DR620 boasts auto-finalization for formatting created-DVDs so that they can be played on other devices, 1080p up-conversion capabilities, and HDMI inputs for high-quality HD video playback. Slated to drop in April 2009, the Toshiba DR620 will retail for $179.99 (same as its peer) and come with a 1 year limited warranty. Features DVD/VCR Recorder DVD-R, -RW, +R, ... PROS: (1) good recorded image quality (2) VCR to DVD transfers - ideal for watching or updating old VHS tapes (3) 1080p upconversion (4) affordable price (5) includes remote control ... CONS: (1) simple looking (2) no built-in tuners - requires external tuners / cable box / etc... for recording (3) cheap plastic DVD tray

1 Star Review   ToshibaDirect.com

I purchased this VCR/DVD recorder in the hopes of transferring my VHS tapes to DVD. The 109 page manual does not have any instructions on how to simply transfer VHS to DVD. Not to mention that there are no "simple" instructions in the entire manual. I even attempted to copy video camera tapes to the DVD and spent 2 hours trying. Do Not even attempt to use this device unless you have a degree in technology. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS FOR THE AVERAGE PERSON. IT IS GOING BACK TO THE STORE!

DVD+RW Worked Very Well
5 Star Review   ToshibaDirect.com

I have been using the Sony DVD+RW and have recorded about 20 DVD's this week with no problems using the XP mode for the best quality. I just followed the below procedure on VHS to DVD dubbing and make sure you push the Rec Mode button to the left of the REC button at that step. If the DVD+RW is unformatted it will format when inserted. It will try to load and then go into the Format process. If you have used this DVD on your computer, Format it in Explorer and then put it into the Toshiba and go into Setup: DVD Menu: Format and Format the DVD again. And when you have completed your DVD, perform the Finalize procedure if you are going to use the DVD on another device. I have deleted and edited the Titles without any problems. With all of the procedures I have done, I have not received any errors. On the initial setup in the beginning I made a few changes from default below due to the TV and sound system that I have. I'm using HDMI to the TV and RCA from the Toshiba L1 to the Comcast cable unit. I have had this unit for a couple of years now and have had no problems. Playback: PCM-96kHz, Dolby-PCM Video: Progressive-On Recording: PCM, Disc Full-On, End of Timer Rec-On, Aspect Ratio Video Mode-16:9, Make Recording Compatible-On HDMI: RGB Range-Enhanced Dubbing VHS to DVD on DVR620KU Model Before beginning the steps below, press Setup on your remote. General Setting should be highlighted. Press the Enter button on the remote. Playback should be highlighted. Press the down arrow key on the remote (below the Enter button# until Recording is highlighted, then press Enter. Auto Chapter should be highlighted. Down arrow to Dubbing Mode. The VCR->DVD mode should be checked. If not, down arrow to it and press enter. Then press return. Keep pressing return till you are back at Setup. For VHS->DVD dubbing: 1. Press DVD button on remote #near bottom right, with green background#. 2. Press Open/Close on remote. DVD Caddy door should open. 3. Place DVD on caddy. 4. Press Open/Close on remote. DVD Caddy door should close. Let the loading of the DVD complete. 5. Press the REC MODE button on the remote repeatedly until you see the record mode that you want to use. Those can be XP, SP, LP, EP, or SLP. 6. Press VCR button on remote #to the left of DVD button, with orange background#. 7. Insert VHS tape into VHS slot. 8. Press Play on remote. VHS should start playing and its playback be visible on your TV. Press Pause on the remote. 9. Press the DVD button on the remote again. 10. Press the Dubbing button on the remote #near bottom left#. DVD recording should then begin, recording from VHS, and the VHS tape should resume playing. 11. Press Stop on the remote to stop recording. If you've tried this and it's not working, explain what is going wrong at what step. Note that if the VHS tape is copy protected #i.e. a commercial tape instead of your own recording) then you may not be able to do the VHS->DVD dubbing.

Have copied 20 vcr(compact) to dvd -r discs without any problems. Like a few others I did push the rec button instead of the rec mode button prior to pushing the dubbing button. Other than that all went well. Hoping for a long life from this unit.

No problems on the DVD side and the upconvert looks really good. But the VCR has been chewing tapes after 1 year (just in time for the warranty to expire). The ONLY reason I bought this unit was to convert home videos and nearly all of them are ruined.

BBBIG DDDISAPPOINTMENT
2 Star Review   ToshibaDirect.com

THE IDEA OF OWNING/USING THIS MACHINE IS OVER RATED. SUPPOSED TO BE ABLE TO DUB VHS TO DVD. RECORD TO EITHER SIDE SHOULD HAVE BEEN A + . THE EDITING FEATURES ON THE DVD SIDE ALSO SEEMED PLAUSIBLE. THIS POORLY CONSTRUCTED MACHINE LASTED APPROX. 10 MONTHS BEFORE THE VHS SIDE "COLLAPSED" AND WOULDN'T ACCEPT TAPES. TO TOP IT OFF, THE MACHINE WOULD STAY ON FOR 10 SECS. W/THE EJECT SYMBOL DISPLAYED ON THE TV (ALTHOUGH NO TAPE WAS IN MACHINE!) AND TURN OFF. THIS RESULTED IN NOT BEING ABLE TO WATCH OR RECORD ANYTHING - EVEN ON THE DVD SIDE, BECAUSE THE CHEAPLY MADE PIECE OF JUNK WOULDN'T STAY ON FOR MORE THAN 10 SECS!!! WAS ABLE TO CONVERT ABOUT 2 DOZ VHS TO DVD AS WELL AS RECORD SOME SHOWS/MOVIES DURING ITS BRIEF LIFE. VERY DISAPPOINTING NOWADAYS TO PAY FOR ELECTRONICS AND THE QUALITY IS ABOUT 1/3 OF THE PRODUCT QUALITY FROM A FEW YEARS AGO. MANUFCTRS JUST WANT THE FAST BUCK CONSUMERS SHELL OUT W/O ANY CONCERN ABOUT THE INTEGRITY OF THE MERCHANDISE OR CONSUMER SATISFACTION!!! EVERYTHING SEEMS TO BE BUILT NOWADAYS WITH A 12-15 MONTH SHELF LIFE - JUST OUT OF REACH OF THE WARRANTY.!!! !!!! !!!!!! !!!!!! !!!!!! !!!!!!!! !!!!!!! !!!!!!! !!!!!! !!!!!!

Did the job well!
4 Star Review   ToshibaDirect.com

Bought this machine for dubbing family VCR tapes to DVDs. Follow 9 step instructions from manual page 50-51 to setup the dubbing procedure. Anyway, I just let it run until it done. Check recorded DVD as good as the VCR tape. Don’t know why other users have issues. May perhaps pressed the wrong button at step 7. It happened when I first use it, the REC button just next to the REC MODE button!!

DVR620 DISAPPOINTING!!
2 Star Review   ToshibaDirect.com

We bought the DVR620 specifically to transfer home VCR's to DVD's. We have followed the instructions to the "T' and it simply does not work. This product is not user friendly to the average person. It does play VCR's and DVD's without a problem but will not do what it is advertised to do. Can anyone tell us where we might be going wrong and if so, please post step by step instructions or tell me where to go to find them. This has been a very frustrating and expensive purchase.

Performs exactly as advertised
5 Star Review   By JerryV on Home Depot - Feb 16, 2013

I've been using the VHS tape/DVD player/recorder for two months now and wanted to exercise the majority of the features before reviewing, including re-recording from my cable DVR. What I discovered is recording material while it's being broadcast or from a DVR recorded program is equally as easy as long as the video source is the same resolution as the DVD's resolution (standard broadcast). Attempting to record high definition source will generate an error not described in the owner's manual. Overall, a good product that plays prerecorded tapes and DVD's with good quality and will attempt to upconvert the image quality through the HDMI output when used. Recording quality is selectable and easy to choose through the controller. Also, the option of taking partially recorded DVD's from other recorders and converting them to be compatible with this recorder is a nice addition.

poorly built
1 Star Review   ToshibaDirect.com

Bought the unit to have a second VHS unit at the house. I had played 3 hours of tape when the unit failed, eating tape after tape. My decade old metal VHS machine is still running fine. Missed the deadline on returning to the store and have had to ship to CA. When it arrives I will be able to order a replacement unit which will take another week or so to arrive back here. Definitely unhappy. The whole unit seems fragile beyond belief. Did not even reach the point of trying to record anything.

finalize your disks
3 Star Review   ToshibaDirect.com

To everyone who said that the disks don't play on other dvd players. You probably have to finalize the disk before you put it in another device. You can put the disk back in the player and find the option in the menu somewhere. Once it is finalized then it will play in other players.

Toshiba 620 review
2 Star Review   ToshibaDirect.com

I have tried multiple DVD's as it kept coming up with error message that it can't record. I eventually bought some Staples DVD+R's and have had the best luck with them working. It still comes up with error writing message but not as often. If you keep going back and trying to record over and over, eventually it records but sometimes it takes awhile. I was hoping that this machine would work better but it does the job -- just takes a lot of time. I did try to talk to text support and they just referred me back to online stuff which didn't help at all with the error message. I would not recommend this VHS => DVD unless it is the only one you can find.

Unhappy camper
2 Star Review   ToshibaDirect.com

I purchased this unit 11 months ago to save some old VCR tapes to DVDs. Very difficult to do and the manual was less than useful. I had to return the DVR620 as the VCR side stopped working and I couldn't even access that unit. The last tape I inserted couldn't be ejected (couldn't do anything with the VCR). I also wanted to use the tape to record off my Digital TV Converter, but the L1 input didn't work. The L2 did, but then cables had to be left hanging out in front. A positive to the DVR620 is it had good picture quality and sound quality. If buying a DVR620, be sure to get an extended warranty. I got mine via Squaretrade. Glad I did.

Worthless
1 Star Review   ToshibaDirect.com

The dvd recorder is okay as long as you don't want to play the dvd on anything else. I tried every device in my house (regular dvd player, 3 different portable dvd players, a laptop and a desktop computer....no good. So I took a couple disks that were recorded on this machine (that play fine on this machine) to a large electronics store and tried everything they had, including different computers, no luck. Best beware.

Worst DVD Recoreder Ever!
1 Star Review   ToshibaDirect.com

For every additional gizmo, the picture and sound quality suffers. So why is input coax and output RCA? You need a converter to go from RCA back to coax and then you have to pump up the TV volume until it distorts just to hear it. If you use pre-recorded tapes or DVD's, the quality is fine, but if you record a DVD on this machine, the playback is lousy. Also, when recording a DVD that has been previously recorded on another recorder, you have to reformat the DVD, but if you record on this machine and then record on a Panasonic, there are no compatibility issues. I have never experienced such nonsense before. Panasonic is so much better! Toshiba should learn about K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple, Stupid).

Toshiba DVR620
4 Star Review   Crutchfield.com

Crutchfield has collected 7 user reviews for this product with an average rating of 4.1 out of 5 stars. The most recent reviewer said, "Works as good as any other combo but be warned. I have tried several DVD recorders, some combo recorders, and none of them will record unless you keep the TV on all the time. The content providers (cable, satellite, etc.) are building in content protection called HDCP. They want you to rent a DVR or use Tivo which records to a temporary device as opposed to a permanent device DVD. I have talked to many tech support staff, read many blogs, and there is no way around it. The Crutchfield tech support staff were very knowledgeable but the problem was not resolved. I returned the unit just like all the others."

DVR620 DVD Recorder
4 Star Review   ToshibaDirect.com

I've recorded well over 100 DVDs on my 620 in 15 months and cannot recall a DVD record failure on any brand. I would have given 5 stars as a DVD only recorder. The VCR dub to DVD is poorly conceived -you can't pause the DVD during recording, and the recording quality is poor if the tracking has problems.

I love this product, it looks sharp, clean and easy to use. Problems lie in the S-video, it sends out but the [s video-in] port doesn't work at all, everything else does tho. Problem 2 is that the DVR cant be controlled threw HDMI like newer HDMI connected products, witch isn't a big shock but a little disappointing. Other than that its an Excellent piece of equipment. P.S. Also the Unit will not Dub protected VHS Tapes to DVD it sends an error message and stops.recording.

power unit failure
1 Star Review   ToshibaDirect.com

At the moment you connect it to the power, lights begin to blink and it doesn't accept any commands (with the remote control or manually) it means that you can't use it. When I called Toshiba to give me a place where I can take it to be service, they told me that I need to mail it to their place (I have this machine for only 4 months). Their warranty is not good.

worked great for a couple years
1 Star Review

Strengths: fairly easy to use, except for the process of adding titles to DVD recordings. Very complicated

Weakness: bad customer service. When I explained a problem to their CSR, he was baffled and could only suggest taking the unit to a service center, which would cost only $50 less than buying a new one.

This is the third consecutive DVD RECORDER VCR RECORDER combo that worked fine two years and then died. For this particular unit, when trying to dub from a video tape to the DVD, after 90 seconds the function stops, starts transferring the material on the video tape to the DVD and then ejects the videotape and shuts off. I strongly suspect these units are intentionally poorly designed to force consumers to keep replacing them.
