DV-980H DVD Player (Progressive Scan, 1080i Upconversion, HDMI)

Strengths: Costs less than Blu-Ray if you are not ready to upgrade .

Weakness: The cost , I got mine for $169.00 at Amazon .

Great Standard Definition player .Back panel has most of the same outputs as a Blu- Ray player .
Easy to use and connect .
I use mine with a Sony STR-DA5300ES 7.1 Receiver Upconversion is great also . If you are not ready to switch to a Blu-Ray player ( movies still priced too high ) then this player is for you .

Oppo DV-980H

Strengths: As close as you can get to Hi Def or Blu Ray for much less . Easy to opperate

Weakness: A tad pricey for standard def .I got mine at Amazon for $169.00 and free shipping

I bought this unit for its up conversion and its 7.1 capabilities .
Very easy to connect and operate .
The back panel has every connection you need for discrete 7.1 .
Some are going to say its is priced too high for a standard def player .
To me it is well worth the money .

The best preHD/preBlueRay player

Strengths: Plays all convetional formats

Weakness: None

This player is to take advantage of my 42" HD LCD TV. The major criteria for my choice of the DVD player is its ability to play SACD and DVD Audio, raw Mpeg and DivX files, which this player does flawlessly. The sound quality is excellent as well as the picture. The front USB connector is very handy. I didn't test it with external hard drive though. All my previous players were in the same...

Great choice if you want a high quality upscaling DVD player.

Strengths: Beautiful picture quality and sound. Very easy to set up.

Weakness: no sd/memory card slot for viewing pictures (does have a USB slot though)

Very high quality upscaling DVD player without the $300-$400 price tag. Yes, this DVD player is more expensive than the ones you see at Best Buy or Circuit City, almost $100 more expensive. But the difference in quality from this Oppo 980H and an entry level (sub $100 player) is very noticeable. First the picture quality of the upscaled image is amazing. Almost (I said almost) as good looking as...

Oppo DV980H

Strengths: Hard-pressed to find a player supporting more formats at this price, great video, great audio, superior packaging, simple but effective.

Weakness: None so far

I purchased this DVD player to replace one that set me back more than 10x the price to free up some cash for other things and I don't regret it in the slightest. Don't be fooled, this is NOT an HD player. Your upconverted DVDs will not look like a quality HD-DVD or a Blu-Ray disc, but you can rest assured you will get a great picture out of your older movies. Setup was remarkably simple,...
