Cool device at first, not worth it in the long run
This is phone that looks cool, and is very fun to show off to friends. The design of the control pad is nice, but the analog pads don't work that great for games. At some point you'll probably wish it was a full keyboard instead of a game controller. It runs Crash Bandicoot and the other pre-installed games pretty well. At first it seemed like a good and reliable Android device, but as time passed by I became more and more frustrated with it. I started to have slowdown problems, and the phone also freezing and often crashing out of nowhere. The phone's operating system is extremely buggy and inconsistent. After owning the phone for about months, the phone is terribly slow, almost ALWAYS crashes when opening an application, and seems to have a mind of its own at times. There are never any software updates to help improve the phone's performance. This phone will make you angry and frustrated. I almost had to switch back to my old flip phone because the phone acts up so much. Bottom line, stay away from this device. It's a okay device for gamers, but it's below par as a cellular device.

Good Android Phone
Alright. Let me start by saying I upgraded to this phone from the iphone 3gs. It was a great choice. I love gaming on it, the call quality is great, and is very fast. It is a little bulky though. If you want to use the phone alot each day, you must charge the device every night, which shouldn't really be a problem. Overall, solid phone.

not that good
Battery not last even 3 hours of play, the stand up battery will not last 6 hours, good for gaming but not a lot of games, freeze too often.

AWESOME ... games and a phone! :)
Not only does this phone allow you to play your typical Android app games, it also allows you to play full PS games. Crash Bandicoot is my favorite! :D This phone is very multi-functional. With this particular device you can do anything that you would do with a regular Android smartphone, plus you can play PS games!!!!!!

Awesome alternative to the iPhone!
First off, I love this phone! I had the Xperia x10a before upgrading to Xperia Play and I'm a huge fan of the Xperia platform. While some reviewers have complained about the sluggish operations of the phone, mine has worked flawlessly from day one. I purchased a 32GB memory card and I never have any problems with having enough space for games, videos, music, etc. The crowning achievement of this device, of course, is the Playstation certified pull-out game controller keyboard. Sure, it's great for gaming. I have spend countless hours on airplanes (I travel a lot) playing games, watching videos, etc. However, what I like the most about the Xperia Play is that it is a GREAT phone! Crystal clear sound, adequate call sound level, decent built in speakers, loads files and software quickly, an ultra-crisp touch screen, and a sleek design. A few cons: The phone is rather heavy and somewhat bulky, however the ergonomic design makes it fairly comfortable in your hand. Battery life: you will have to charge your phone nightly. All in all, a GREAT alternative to the iPhone. Plus it's a great conversation starter!

I hate my phone
OMG. every single app i get crashes no matter what it is. even my camera and messaging app crashes which is insane. It freezes constantly and restarts itself even when im in the middle of a phone call. I would not recommend this to anyone and i hate the typing on the screen. if you have never tried typing on the screen and think its easy, its not. Oh and another thing, sometimes when im typing my keyboard will get all messed up and when i hit a key to screen will change and a different key will be hit and it is so frustrating. i hate it. I would NOT recommend thus to anyone

Amazing phone with everything I need!
I went from an IPhone to this Android and I will never ever go back. It's easy to use, perfect size, nice big screen, and all the features I need. By far the best phone I've ever owned. It's also got a built in playstation that is perfect for someone like me! The batter life is average for one of these phones I guess..wish that were a little better. The only other complain I have is it randomly "freezes" and kind of pushes random buttons. I 've had to restart my phone several times because of that but it's fine as soon as it comes back on.

great GAMING device, not great phone
i picked up this phone and fell in love with the ps controller. i kept it for a while then forgot all about my other phones i had in the past. I picked up my old infuse for my brother to use and i noticed while i was erasing it that it had a lot of the same features, but it seemed like the infuse was more of a phone, for example, when typing a phone number in the infuse withh bring up all contacts that start with 225921 and allowing you to press them once to call, very simple and a nice feature. the infuse had more features than the play for a phone, but the play beats any phone on games, design for playing games and game quality. its so fun to play games on that phone, EVEN EMULATORS can be played with the ps controller.

If you like to game anywhere, this is for you
I love this phone. I have multiple emulators; N64, SNES, Gameboy, and Gensis. They all run splendidly. Minecraft PE is also a must have. The battery consistently last over a day and a half with normal use, if you do a lot of gaming it may go down faster, but I haven't had this issue. The docking station that it comes with is very handy if you plan on using it as an alarm clock. The only thing is that the internal memory is kind of small at only ~500Mb and there are a few preloaded games that you can't remove, but with ICS this won't be an issue.

Its a great phone for like a lot of game playing
this phone is great mostly for people who never want to leave their house because there in the middle of playing on their xbox 360 or some sort. for on the go players. the phone specs could have been better, but overall good phone for like teens/kids/young adults. Camera not impressed but somewhat not really bothers me, because i can take pictures with like a digital camera anyways. this is a really good phone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Terrible, terrible phone.
If 1 star is "Poor", I should be allowed to give it a 0. Poor is an understatement. Bought this phone now 29 days ago, before spring break, and of course left the box to return it at college. Thank the lord I go back tomorrow and can return it. Pros: Speaker - I love music, and this thing has booming sound. Battery Life - I've seen it be better than any other on the market. I use it a lot, have to charge it during the night. Games - Obviously, it's the PSPgo or whatever. It's pretty neat for the games you can get to work. Cons: Games - This is a gaming phone, but it's about 5 generations behind on GPU. Other Android's game better. Furthermore, the trackpad slideout thing is terrible. The physical buttons are good, but the trackpad is terrible in use. Speed - 1GHz, single core processor. Really? Gaming phone with 30-40% of the processor of other Android phones? It gets stuck and crashes trying to text. I crash listening to music, opening facebook, etc. 1GB internal - Terrible for loading games, many of which use tons of space on the internal memory, and the phone is already loaded with so much bloatware it can barely run to begin with. Sony Ericsson - I remember why I never see phones by this company. It's because nobody uses them. They force you to use their products. You can't use headphones with a mic built in, like from Apple, or Beats by Dre, or any other modern headphone company. You have to use their overpriced, poorly made headphones. Overall: Don't buy this phone. It looks cool in the store, and is neat for the first 10 minutes, but then you realize that you're going to hate the next 2 years with it. Closing note: Keep in mind that this is a company who got a 4.2/10 in the products category, even though it got maximum points in battery efficiency and avoidance of hazardous substances.

Cant go wrong except battery
I have ATT for 7 years and have only owned Sony's.My fav being the 580i. I never owned a smart phone and still really don't need one. This phones battery life for me with almost everything off is a day and a half. Played some of the games not being a gamer and they work fairly well but does have controller malfunctions occasionally ruining your winning game, having to restart the phone. Beware if your new to data!!! I only check email when necessary always being near a computer or wifi. It has apps that even if you don't do online gaming you will go over!!! Always monitor. The screen could be bigger and I wish I could move bottom row of icons so I am not connecting to the web by accident. If you buy the after market battery wait to buy the case!!
By on AT&T - Mar 10, 2012
This phone in theory is cool, and awesome, but I have had nothing but problems with this thing. I have gone through 4 of these phones, ATT is awesome and always takes care of me. I am under the impression that this phone is buggy and cant handle the software it is loaded with. Every one of them has locked up on face book, texting and even the phone. Its very slow too, I have to power cycle it and pull the battery daily, sometimes more. When I power cycle it, sometimes I will get 30 or 40 text messages at once. Needless to say I am sick of this phone, I don't abuse them cause normally I sell them after I get a new phone. Any way I say stay away from this phone period.

It is the Playstation Phone.
I have used this phone for over a month now and I must confess that I do enjoy it very much. I have found it to best overall smartphone expedience so far. All of my needs from a phone and then some are provided and it can supplement entertainment in a very busy world. The case recommendation is only what I feel would be best if you wanted a case from att. There is another case the Trident Aegis for the xperia play that would be best. It has android gingerbread 2.3.3, 2.3.4 should be on the way and Sony(Ericsson) announced that it would receive ice cream sandwich later this year.

I like the games
this phone scratches very easily so if you get it, GET A SCREEN PROTECTOR. I got mine a few days ago and it's already scratched. I think it is a good phone but get a screen protector!!! I like the Android system too. ANGRY BIRDS BOYYY!!!

Due to get better.
This isn't a bad phone all in all. Coming from the Sony Ericsson Xperia x10 which I loved truely to the XPlay left me a little disappointed. My favorite features are pretty much all here. I miss mediascape. On the XPlay I cannot download album art it seems, and I totally hate auto correct, the phone feels so fragile, can no longer change keyboards, and so far I have had it for six days and already I loathe it lol. Improvements I have noticed a longer battery life although same battery as in the x10, duel cams, crisper/sharper display, and customizable app menu. I do so miss my x10 and although I'm sure it will fade with time, at least I'm still the envy of all my co-workers! It's not keeping up with the Joneses around here, it keeping up with me!!!

Not a bad phone
My opinion of this phone is based off of what i experienced with my iPhone 3gs for the 2 years before buying this phone. I definitely like the android software better than the iPhone. The customizing, the ability to change icons and change the home screen around however you like. Even the messaging, you can change text, color, size, almost an endless amount of things. Its more user friendly. I'm a big guy with big hands and its not difficult to play games on it, its designed really well for game playing. The reason i rated the design only 2 stars was because of how fragile the phone is. I'm a roofer and the person my friends go to when they have car troubles, so i'm always getting up and down off the concrete or high up off the ground on a roof. I've dropped my iPhone dozens of times face first "no screen protector" on gravel, concrete, off a roof, in the sink with running water, and probably a hundred or so times its fallen 4 to 5ft down on my hardwood floors and the screen has never gotten a scratch "minus a tiny one that you can't even feel". But my Sony was dropped 2 ft down the second i got home from buying it, and already it got an inch long scratch. The next day i was cleaning a rifle with my phone next to me, it fell in between my lap against the stock, and the inch long scratch turned into a deeper 2 inch scratch. I didn't buy a screen protector because of the experience i had with an iPhone and how hard i was on it, but even coming home and babying this thing, its still extremely fragile. its a decent phone, but I'd definitely recommend a screen protector, even if you don't treat phones bad like i do, better safe than having a big scratch like i gotta live with.

Try it before you buy it
This phone is great it just needs more support like upgrades to the os and att should push for more updates as well.

AT&T has included too much bloatware to the device
This phone was amazing when it first launched on other carriers, was. The new model that AT&T has launched carries not only Sony's overlay on the stock Android, but also an ungodly amount of "bloatware" from AT&T. I was an early adopter of this phone on the AT&T network and rushed to get it and trade in my iPhone 4 for a slick Android, all the reviews raved about this phone as a true gamer's aid. The only difference was that they were running different Xperia Play's with a stock Android and an almost clean system from bloatware. I recommend this device to anyone who doesn't do heavy texting, as this device is most hard hit in that area by the various add-ons from Sony and AT&T. Right now is around 2 or 3 months after I picked up my phone and I can barely text anyone without the messaging application locking up. Aside from this niche, the phone is almost perfect in other areas compared to other network models. If you want a device that is mid-rate nowadays and doesn't text well but has a controller and a decent touch screen then look up this phone. It's an amazing phone to play with, just watch the low internal storage that device has! (Around 150mb free)

if you dont mind your plane going supper high
I got this phone when it first came out at first i liked it but then it started to randomly opening apps and calling people at all times of the day and night i had to raise both of my data and phone plans after talking to A.T.&T. they replaced the unit my next unit freezes and drops calls and randomly makes calls like the first unit. I do like the idea and layout of the phone I think the second generation or third will be awesome

This phone has made me an Xperia fan
Sony Ericsson did not disappoint me with the SE Xperia Play. I've downloaded plenty of apps on the Android Marketplace that allowed me to customize my phone to my liking. Like most smartphones nowadays, battery life is something to be desired. I've downloaded an app that allowed me to extend my battery life considerably. UI is very easy to navigate and pleasing to the eyes. Camera and video quality is pretty good with the 5.1 MP lens. Let's not forget about the games. There are many games on the Android Marketplace that are optimized for the Xperia Play. Facebook, Twitter, Yelp, and all the other social networks sites have been an ease to navigate. I'm on those sites constantly. Because of this phone, I hardly ever use my personal computer when I need to get on the internet. Internet browsing on this phone is pretty fast. I've been very happy with my phone and will probably purchase another SE Xperia device in the future.

Oh My Goodness!
Now I've had the psp and the psp go but this is whole new level! Its like the perfect phone for any gamers PERIOD It make phones like the the htc hero look like garbage. It has six predownloaded games installed on it when you first buy it. Its 4G, touchscreen, and a portable gaming system. What more can you ask for! The typing screen is familiar to people who've had a psp or ps3 so typing is a piece of cake for them. The battery is awesome for a phone that does this much, and it can use android market and apps just like any other phone. On a scale from 1 to 10 its a 12!

Perfect Phone for gamers on the go
This is an android phone with a twist with a controller built in. The bad part is the battery life. Even though the battery life is less than average, it can still work if you're not on your phone for the whole day.

Finally, some one was thinking!
This cell simply ROCKS! Anticipated for along time, finally SONY makes it reality! A high end cell phone integrated into a high end gaming system, All-In-One! very cool, and very convenient. I really have nothing bad to say about this unit, but if I had to point out flaws, the only one that bothers me is the Battery life (a single charge) and how fast it eats juice to function. Naturally it depends what your doing with it that determines the amount of power it uses at any particular moment, but if your on the go and want to game, you had better invest in a mobile charging unit! Added plus' are the accessories that come with it, mainly the Docking station...a huge "COOL" in my book, if your a gamer on the go, this cell is absolutely for you!

Love this phone!
I had an iPhone 3GS, and I switched to this one because I have an 8 year old son who loves Minecraft and Crash Bandicoot. I wanted something that would keep him busy when we're out of the house. I am also a gamer myself, and I absolutely LOVE this phone. The battery life is fine, it lasts much longer than my iPhone. My only problems with it are that it didn't come with an instruction book, and it doesn't really notify me when I have new messages on Yahoo, Facebook, or when I get new texts. It says it on the "lock" screen, but when I turn it on I have a hard time finding them. I like the Android version of the apps that I had for my iPhone. Yahoo messenger and Facebook are much easier to use on this phone than an iPhone. The camera is great. It takes nice pics. Being a mom, that is one feature that is extremely important to me. It's simple to take a pic and add it to my Facebook page without having to go to the Facebook app. It's quick and simple. The game pad feels nice and sturdy, and the games look very nice on it. I compared it to my son's PSP screen, and it's about the same exact size. The games look just as they're supposed to. The QWERTY touchscreen keyboard is OK, but I prefer to turn the phone sideways because the keys are a little small when the phone is turned right-side-up. But again, that could be because I am so used to my iPhone and the layout is slightly different. It has multiple options for the auto-correct, and I'm still trying out the different options to see which one suits me. Overall, I love the phone. I just wish it had come with an instruction book! It's taking me forever to figure out how to use it. But if you're a gamer, you're going to LOVE this phone! (I also have the car charger that I recommended with this review. It has the cord for the phone to charge, and it has a USB port so I can charge other devices at the same time.)

Android platform works seemlessly with sony
To my suprise the best thing about this phone is the phone. This is such a great device that if it didn't slide out into a Play Station controller i wouldn't care. I had an htc hero before this, and just the phone aspect of this device blows that thing out of the water. battery last 10 times longer. plus the sony ericsson offers the best gaming experience that you can find on a cell phone.

It's the best android phone that I have used.
The design of the phone is extremely nice. The back is curve, great design. Loud stereo speakers. Nice D-pad for gaming use. Timescape combines all my social status in one place. The user interface is very good. No lag, very fast. Game quality is very good. It can play HD games. Fast 4G internet. Sony Ericsson makes Xperia Play a great device with Android 2.3. I updated my phone to 2.3.4 and it supports HD recording, very nice. The screen off animation is great. Camera is good with 5MP and flash. The phone feels very comfortable on my hand. The color is very pretty. Screen is not that bright enough, but it's okay. Facebook inside Xperia is a great feature. Music quality of the phone is better than iPhone. There are many games from Android Market and gameloft. The dock looks great, works great. This is the best smartphone that I have ever used, compare to Samsung Galaxy S II and Sony Ericsson Xperia X10. Xperia PLAY 4G is #1.

Calling all gamers. You could somewhat put down the PS3 controllers and your handhelds because now there is a phone certified by Playstation themselves. The phone is totally touchscreen but when you want to play games on your phone, you could slide it up and start gaming. My experience with this phone by far is amazing. I like the fact that it has a sleek design and it isn't too big for me to carry in my pocket. I am personally a gamer myself so it really attracted me enough to purchase such awesomeness. I like the fact that it has wifi and that it has apps. It also comes with an HD camera so you could take good pictures. If you are a gamer and you also want a nice smartphone, this would be one that you would enjoy.

Have been waiting for this phone ever since it was introduced. I got this to replace my Iphone4m, which I'm sure some would scratch their head about. But, the screen looks great and the touchscreen is responsive. The inclusion of the docking station is a great idea. Not sure how the durability will hold up. My psp go's slider got loose after a few months, wonder if this will happen to this phone as well. Looks good docked next to my home theater system. So far after 1 day, Im very happy with my choice. I'll do another review in a few weeks.

Android 2.3 plus gaming keypad make this phone amazing. Display is crisp (auto brightness control can be enabled or disabled). This is simply the best gaming mobile phone - period. Excellent call quality, very nice speaker and music player. The phone is well built and easy to hold. The camera is nise and it also has a secondary camera. I don't like the fact it has four keys. Some people would prefer the 'extra' search button. I'd rather take three bigger buttons. At least the buttons physical buttons. So they are not annoying like the capacitive touch buttons I had on the captivate. Thumbs up to AT&T for nice pricing and for adding a nice dock and cable to package. The dock is really handy.
