The BDP-S790 rightfully deserves the title as Sony's flagship 3D Blu-ray player. With features like dual HDMI outputs, a dual core processor, and the future-looking 4K upscaling, the S790's $250 price tag should be compared with niche Blu-ray players often costing at least twice as much.

5 Star Review   By lmbea4 on Sony - Official Store - Oct 1, 2013

I am very tech savi, and purchased this blu-ray direct from Sony. It arrived in a very timely manner and has worked flawlessly right out of the box. The internet enabled features work well and the android/apple app for tablets/phones integrates very well with the device. Enrolling all the services only takes a few minutes and was pretty painless. I can now enjoy all that blu-ray/dvd/media player/netflix/hulu/ect has to offer at the press of a button. It is quiet while operating and fast to load/play. All around a great purchase.

3 Star Review   By AudioFiloDough on Sony - Official Store - Sep 5, 2013

I've been a Sony loyalist for over 25 years. This Blu-ray player may finally be the nail in the loyalty coffin. Internet access is temperamental on a very strong home connection. The player's menu feels clunky and inefficient. I'm surprised this is the 'top of the line'. Definitely has a long way to go.

Nice but maybe a bit klunky
4 Star Review   By Zaphod on Sony - Official Store - Sep 3, 2013

The DVD experience is as good as on any other DVD player. It's hooked into my 5.1 sound system, and its performance and compatibility in that area are fine. Nice that it controls the Sony HDTV, so you only have to hit one remote. On the other hand, the Sony HDTV remote controls it, too, except that the OPTIONS button results in a different menu. I use the wireless networking features extensively, even though I did not intend to prior to purchase. I watch YouTube and Netflix only via this device. Have also watched Flickr and European news coverage. Thought those would be mere gimmicks, but I continue to watch them. Every now and then the unit flakes out and needs to be rebooted, an inexcusable bit of bad software engineering. Also, online ordering and delivery went smoothly.

2 Star Review   By DPAirboat on Sony - Official Store - Sep 2, 2013

I have loved Sony products for over 30 years and until recently given Sony a 10 out of 10, but their warranty has been the worst. Can't get in touch ot just plain egnored. I really like this BDP-S790, it sometimes does not play a DVD disc that others players in my home play, and now it stops, jumps and hesitates when playing DVD's, but still plays Blue Ray, what's up with that. I am having so much trouble trying to get warranty, and it runs out 09/19/2013. Less than a year old and trouble all ready. Time to go to another product.

I was using Boxe BOX and Apple TV for my medial streaming , and I have a NAS at home with all my movies. I was hoping it to be a good media player along with a good Blue ray player. very bad when playing MKV , will play some MKV over USB connection, but Over the Network even with Cat5e MKV fail to play. What ever it plays, picture and Sound quality is excellent, better then any media player I have tested. I would give 5 Starts when it comes to sound and Video quality. I never thought there would be such a big difference.. This Blue Ray player exceed picture and sound quality on following application . 1- Playing Blue Ray disk 2 - Netflex ( lot better when it comes to sound quality as compared to Apple TV or Boxe box.)

2 Star Review   By LongingFor3D on Sony - Official Store - Jul 19, 2013

S790 doesn't recognize my Bach & Odin HXD-1113 as a 3D display. Funny works fine with my LG BP620. Sony manual says to turn OFF the 3D output which apparently ignores the display devise type but then the projector says INVALID FORMAT (playing Avatar figured its been out long enough to work with all equipment). So just because you buy a Sony BD do you REALLY have to buy a Sony TV ???? The LG works on my XBR (pre 3D unfortunately) & the HXD. So I think I'll just buy LG when I replace the TV. You know the BP730 does 4k too.

The hardware in this player is top shelf. This is the first player I've owned (this is number 12) that truly presents a vivid life like experience. The video and sound quality will satisfy the low tech and the high tech user alike. The easy setup menu takes minutes to walk through, and has enough Internet connectivity for even the most demanding tech geek. Bottom line, its a SONY, if it doesn't blow your hair back they will exchange it. Oh!! ....but it will, it will

Excellent complement to a Sony 3D HDTV
4 Star Review   By Hunter1 on Sony - Official Store - Feb 26, 2013

This is a great player with two very irritating items of note. Number 1 - the remote has an inner and outer circle in the center which controls different functions. These circles are right next to each other and if you have large fingers or are not very careful you will be continually hitting the wrong button. the control buttons are very sensitive and this is very annoying. You should be able to control a remote without looking at it after awhile. That's not the case with this one. Number 2 - The manual controls on the player itself are poorly located on the top of the player and not labeled. This are especially annoying if the player is in an entertainment center and you have the slide you fingers across the top until something happens. Aside from these two annoyances it is a great player.

3 Star Review   By AUDIGEEK1 on Sony - Official Store - Jan 20, 2013

Bought this at Best Buy because I loved the BDP-S780. The audio and picture were great on the 780 and thought I would get an improvement on a good thing by buying the newest model: BDP-S790. Had to reurn it because the sound was unnatural and edgy. The picture although bright had an unnatural look to it. The chuasis fealt frail and cheap. I had to return mine and continue using the BDP-S780 which is superior in performance. The only thing I give the 790 over the 780 is the wifi connection speeds.

your right hand is always the best, Sony is left
5 Star Review   By wopo on Sony - Official Store - Dec 6, 2012

I never thought that I'd find a Blu-ray 3D player that could match my PS3, but the 790 does--and then some. I've compared it with Oppo and Panasonic players only to find that it not only equals them but surpasses on almost every critical point. i have paired it with my Onkyo 5010 receiver and the Panasonic 7000u projector. Rarely have I been so impressed at the quality of the image projected as I have been with this combo. Perhaps these units "like" to play together synergistically or maybe I just got lucky but I couldn't recommend this combination more highly. After watching my first DVD on the unit, I found myself screening films I haven't viewed in years to make sure the quality of the picture remained. I was surprised to find that it did. My experience with 3D was also impressive. I reviewed such excellent 3D source material as "Hugo" and "Avatar". Finally...no ghosting and real depth in the picture. I even watched the new fake 3D version of "Titanic" with some small degree of awe. The audio from the 790 was also impressive. Although it is a very subjective point of view, certainly the sound from my 11.2 channel receiver was outstanding and impressive. To my ears it had never been matched by my Panasonic DVD player and the latest Denon receiver. I just finished watching "The Expendables" (...and, trust me, expendable it is) because, to my knowledge, it's the first disc truly encoded with 11.2 audio channels. The sound field was as impressive as the film was mediocre. I have played with all of the tech options that are available on the 790 but I've never found any that were an improvement or the factory originals. I do look forward to combining the 790 with a 4K disc when they arrive or a regular disc upscaled by this player. Indeed, the fact that this Sony contains this option already makes it future proof to some extent. I consider the 790 the best value I've ever received from a player. Combine this with the stellar video performance and I can truly say that I look forward to hundreds of hours of excellent entertainment from the unit. ...Now if the'd just get rid of the annoying buttons and include a back-lit remote, I would be the totally happy couch potato I feel I deserve to be! tc

...better than a PS3?
5 Star Review   By wopo on Adorama - Dec 6, 2012

I consider the 790 the best value I've ever received from a player. need improvement big time
5 Star Review   By FranklinMint on Sony - Official Store - Dec 4, 2012

This is my 5th Sony Blu-ray player. They have gotten better with each new player. This player is no exception. Video quality is greatly improved with 16 bit processing. Much better than it's predecessor, the BDP-780. When playing a Blu-ray disc, the player automatically selects the best audio CODEC for your audio set-up. The new Netflix interface is similar to the Nintendo Wii and is much faster when loading content via WiFi. Web streaming is vastly improved and quite noticeable on Netflix. Netflix video resolution now approaches 1080P with outstanding 5.1 audio. Sony has again added more Internet widgets over the previous model, BDP-780. DLNA works well, but still doesn't decode Apple's audio format, AAC, on iTunes. DLNA works well with most popular video formats. It also plays Sony's video camera formats, however 1080P content from your Sony camera on your computer does not play smoothly over WiFi. The output 3D signal on HDMI now passes through the Bose Lifestyle V25 Home Theater System to a Sony 3D TV. This was seldom the case with the BDP-780. All-in-all, those upgrading from the BDP-780 will be pleased with the improved features of the BDP-790. These improvements are well worth the money spent on this new player.

DLNA Supprt
4 Star Review   By CoachHomey on Sony - Official Store - Nov 24, 2012

I bought this item a week ago and it plays DVD and Blu-ray very well, but the DLNA is lacking when streaming from Windows 7 or any DLNA server for that matter. There is no way to fast forward more then 3 seconds at a time in a movie that you are streaming. When streaming music from a DLNA server there is no selection for random playing like you have in the Sony TV models. When ending a movie or music from streaming the device takes you back to the main menu and you have to go through the list of all your movies or songs again instead of returning to the list at its place like the Sony TV models do. Basically the return button and the arrow buttons on the Blu-ray remote need to function just as the return and arrow buttons work on the TV remote when streaming directly to a Sony TV (KDL-40XBR9). Fix those minor problems and you would have the ultimate Blu-ray player.

Enjoy its features
4 Star Review   By NewSonyOwner2012 on Sony - Official Store - Nov 11, 2012

I've only had this unit for a few days, but a couple of things have stood out for me. First, the remote's navigation (ok, , ^) buttons take awhile to get use to. Circling around them are some feature buttons (return, top menu, etc). I don't know how many times I've pressed the wrong button. I operate the nav buttons by feel--not looking at the buttons. It's so easy to press the wrong one, and very frustrating as you're put into some obscure menu that takes awhile to get back where you were. You just have to use it awhile to see what I'm talking about. The other thing is more serious. While watching a Netflix dvd, the unit just stalled, stopped on one scene. Thinking that the dvd was dirty, I cleaned and put it back in. The unit then restarted in some funky jerky scene to scene jumping. Only shutting down the unit and restarting it would work properly. One time while watching the same dvd, the unit inexplicably "rebooted" for lack of a better term. I suspect that the dvd has imperfections on it, but the way the Sony handles a bad disk makes me wonder. My old Panasonic simply just stalled at the point w/o much ado. But the Sony?? My experience is limited to watching one DVD and some media files on my PC that I streamed to the unit, which played just fine, but if playing scratched up DVD's (i.e., Netflix) turns out to be an on going issue, then I'll probably hook up the old Panasonic to play them leaving the Sony for Blu ray and media playback. Otherwise, I'm more than pleased with the unit.

an amazing machine
3 Star Review   By VAV25 on Sony - Official Store - Oct 17, 2012

Device is good for LCD TV but lacks merit for a good plasma TV. The S480's picture (for example) is much more believable. Image processing makes the picture a synthetic (plastic), but many people love the Oppo's vulgar image with "Marvel", and S790 will certainly find a lot of fans. Adjustable sharpness (texture remastering) on screenshots

Not worth it
1 Star Review   By BuytheBest on Sony - Official Store - Sep 8, 2012

I bought this bluray player because it was new and looked like the best one on the market. I tend to buy the best and keep things for a while. I am really, really disappointed. Yes, you can go to youtube, but you cannot find all the parts of a show easily like you can on a computer. It does get you crackle, but I am too busy to watch really old, bad TV shows. Yes, you can use netflicks, but nothing on this device is as easy to use as my laptop. Nothing on this device is better than my laptop, except having a remote. Buy a wireless keyboard instead. We still hook up my laptop to the TV rather than use the bluray player for any internet use. It is so slow that we just get the laptop out and plug it in. We have read the owner's manual. We have added all the "features." It is just not worth using if you have an alternative. I suggest you buy a cheap bluray player, a laptop, and a wireless keyboard.

5 Star Review   Crutchfield.com

Crutchfield has collected 2 user reviews for this product with an average rating of 5.0 out of 5 stars. The most recent reviewer said, "i just submitted my review on the consumers site. i stated the reason for buying this unit was mainly for sacd playback. i own two panasonic bd's but neither one is capable of sacd playback. personally i think sacd playback sounds better than regular cd's. it put's you in the center of the music, especially classical music. my system consists of pioneer elite receiver and sunfire ribbon speakers, and they sound excellent. thank's for your time."

3 Star Review   By brakerm19 on Sony - Official Store - Aug 10, 2012

This blueray player does not support advanced network configurations. My DHCP server was configured to use a subnet mask of 255.255.255.224. This blueray player after receiving valid IP configuration settings was unable to communicate with the internet until my DHCP server was reconfigured to host a standard class C subnet mask. 255.255.255.0 This problem has existed since I purchased this blueray pleyer almost a year ago and after several firmware updates.

Good BlueRay Player
4 Star Review   By audiogeek6 on Sony - Official Store - May 9, 2012

First of all, if you haven't purchased a blu-ray player in a few years...You'll be impressed with the amount of online sources that this can pull from. I used a hardwired connection, and it worked well. If you've ever owned a Sony Blu-ray player, you will be familiar with the look and feel. Overall the only downsides relate to 2 things...1. The UI while improved, is still not as fast as I'd like. 2. The audio quality over analog connections is good, but could be better. I do enjoy the product, and overall it met my expectations.

3D Compatibility SUCKS
5 Star Review   By techmaster on Sony - Official Store - Apr 5, 2012

great machine it makes my blu-ray and standard dads look ten times better than i have ever seen them than i did with the other units i had i owned a panasonic a samsung flagship and a sharp and they were all top of the line units but they don't come close to this unit and weird thing is i don't know why but it does which is great my blu-ray and standard dvds closer than ever like blu-ray and my blu-rays like 4k with my 1080p hx929 54 or 55 inch model from sony if i'm not wrong wow and to keep like that keep it up to date is my date if you get it and sound quality of the unit is just as good and main menu and setup is a breeze to use and do. they got the wireless internet glitches and all the issues which last years unit had so you would get best sound and picture possible 4k makes it future ready so you wouldn't need to get another one for years to come injoy have fun.
