Dysfunctional Problems
1 Star Review   By Girl5018 on Sony - Official Store - Mar 2, 2014

I bought three of these units on Black Friday 2013 deal. There were no reviews yet as they appeared to be "new" on market...well, none of them work properly. Each kid I bought them for has all the same complaints, freeze up when playing DVD's, and streaming, won't function at all at times beyond light coming on saying power on, and has even lost volume when playback DVD's, along with not loading apps. Forget the web browser. Kids don't even use DVD function at all due to problems. No more Sony for me...:(

Good, But????
4 Star Review   By Ghostdog63 on Sony - Official Store - Jan 21, 2014

Here's the skinny. Got this for a great price for Black Friday. It's a Sony so it's expected to be great. I've had Sony equipment before. Most were good. But lately been going more for Samsung and Panasonic. Why? Because of some minor annoying issues with Sony stuff. While this Blu ray player is very nice and compact, quick to load and offer fantastic HD picture and up-scaling and the best most linear forward and reverse scan on the market. It's been getting stuck and I have to unplug the power cord to get it working again. Annoying!!! Why do I have to go through this Sony? This happens only when I'm online and watching some Apps included. The after pressing the "return" button. Nothing!!! It gets stuck and I have to unplug and plug again. I don't know why. Do you Sony and can you fix it? Also! Even though Sony, Ultra Violet and Flixster are associated, for some reason I am not able to sign into my Flixster account to watch my digital movies online with my Flixster account. Why Sony, can't I log into my Flixster account? I can watch trailers, but there's no option to sign into my account. I have a Samsung Blu ray too and have none of these little annoying issues with it. It' fast and work great all the time and I never have to unplug it to get it going again. Now! If only Sony would allow owners to add new Apps like the Samsung, give access to Googly Play to download Apps and watch movies even with SEN offering, that would make the But???? go away. Until then. go the whole 9 yards Sony and make it right. Oh! And one last thing. What is the use of having a Internet Browser if these's not Flash Support? Can you say Stupid??? Who's making these decisions????

It has worked WONDERFUL 4 me!!!
5 Star Review   By nojsnevets on Sony - Official Store - Jan 11, 2014

I'm not sure why the negative reviews are popping up for this player. I have had mine for a year, and, for the simple uses we utilize it for, it works WONDERFULLY. (DVD, Blu Ray, Netflix, some apps, Pandora, etc# This unit replaced another brand Blu Ray player, #purchased same name brand BR player as LED flat screen - tried to have a matched pair - (Same brand). That was a mistake. The previous BR player was SLOW, had ALL KINDS of connectivity issues #even with all updates) to the point of hardly being able to play You Tube. Bought this Sony d2 decent reviews and strong connectivity reviews. It was like getting rid of a broken toy and replacing it with something MUCH better. Same placement and set up as with previous junk BR player, but setup is EZ and it has worked with NO PROBLEMS for the last year. That's my story and I'm holding to it...... maybe not 'top of the line compared to others, but....... IT WORKS FOR ME

Parental Controls don't work
1 Star Review   By TechMaster44 on Sony - Official Store - Dec 30, 2013

This was a great Blueray Player but we will be returning it due to one very big problem. The Parental Controls to block pornography don't work. We set up these correctly (verified by Sony customer service) but searches on the built-in Youtube channel will still bring up pornographic videos and the web browser is completely unblocked. Even the splash screens for Youtube videos show graphic pornography under certain searches. I would be ok if Sony would provide an option to disable internet access and require the parental password to enable this but it doesn't exist on the current model. It's too bad. I think Sony needs to take more seriously protecting children and youth from pornography. The dangers are well documented.

1 Star Review   By Kittie on Sony - Official Store - Dec 27, 2013

This product was easy to set up and worked great the very first time I used it but after I turned it off, it never worked right again. Customer support was fine in that they recommended I return it, but I would have expected a Sony product to work better than this. At least I can be grateful that it stopped working immediately! No more Sony for me.

Takes the place of a Smart TV
5 Star Review   By casin601 on Sony - Official Store - Dec 1, 2013

I don't have a Smart TV, but it is new and HD. What the S3100 did was to give my TV "the smarts". Registering the product and hooking up to the video service took some effort, but once completed it worked great. I've NEVER had a problem with streaming or interruptions, etc. The built-in Wi-Fi does all the work whenever I want to watch a movie etc. - I can remain DUMB - like my TV. I'm getting another one for my master bedroom. I highly recommend it.

Excellent Player, arrived quickly, easy setup. It recognized home network right away and was easily connected. Netflix, Amazon Prime, DVD played right away. Watched our son's school presentation on the TV same night and family was impressed, clear sharp picture. Great Purchase.

Will not stay connected to internet
1 Star Review   By thorhammer on Sony - Official Store - Nov 24, 2013

I have the BDP-BX510 which appears to be the same device. Device will not stay connected to internet and wireless router is only 8 feet away. I spent time with Sony support two different days. Bascially if I reset the wireless router I can then connect to the internet. But I HAVE TO DO THIS EVERYTIME I TURN ON THE DVD PLAYER. I have 6 other devices that connected to the wireless router with no problems at all. The DVD wants WEP connection and router is setup for WPA. I will return the unit and try another manufacturer. Very disappointed to spend so much time on a device that won't work.

Misleading Advertising- Does Not Work with Hulu
1 Star Review   By SchoolTeacher on Sony - Official Store - Nov 3, 2013

I am usually pleased with my purchases from Sony. However, after purchasing this blu ray player to stream videos from Hulu I was greatly disappointed. The product description states it has the capabilities to stream from various Apps including Hulu. Sony's customer service was a nightmare, they kept blaming Hulu & my ISP rather than trying to alleviate the problem. After numerous fixes by Sony, Hulu & my ISP the device still won't stream Hulu smoothly. I am upset with Sony as Hulu streams perfectly through another manufacturer's blu ray player in a seperate room. I hope Sony will test their product more closely before advertising that their product has certain features. I have tried to compromise with Sony & asked to exchange this product for a model that works with no prevail. As an loyal customer of Sony I am deeply disheartened.

Good at playing DVDs
3 Star Review   By Laurabee on Sony - Official Store - Sep 7, 2013

The DVD functionality is fine. The unit is small and light weight and better than the Yamaha it replaced. One of the things that I was most looking forward to was the ability to play movies from my computer over wifi. After moving the files and updating iTunes I've discovered that the DVD player isn't recognizing the mp4 file that iTunes uses. I've tried searching the Internet however I cannot find a fix. The other feature that is of little use to me is the iPad app. All I can do is access my directv account and "throw" that programming. This is useless as the DVD is connected to the tv. The tv has the receiver which provides programming. I would really love for this to be able to play mp4 files.

Lots of Apps, bad web browser
2 Star Review   By DocSteve on Sony - Official Store - Aug 7, 2013

I bought this 3 months ago to update my systems. It works well on all movie channels but does has some issues with Amazon. I am connected via ethernet, not wifi, I look at my signal via laptop and it read 40 MBPS and by the time I watch a movie on Amazon it drops to 6-8 Mbps and no one can explain it. The browser is TERRIBLE, slow and confusing, I wish they had used the keyboard that came with previous player that I owned. There is is no flash player, so that option is out and there is no way to check internet speed. without a flash player. Sony need to do there home work and should have installed google chrome on this instead of there own...

About to return
1 Star Review   By CantStream on Sony - Official Store - Jul 31, 2013

Our BDP S3100 has had problems since we bought and installed it. When we turn it on, it emits a loud, long beep through the TV it's connected to. We tolerated that for awhile. But now, when we go to the Home screen, there are NO apps in the Video and Music menus. So we can't use any of the streaming features, which is why we bought a Wi-Fi streaming player. I'll give the BDP 3100 one point for being somewhat easy to set up on the Wi FI. But overall, it just hasn't worked, so I will be returning this. Pretty disappointing for a Sony product.

OK Blu-Ray, Awful Apps
1 Star Review   By DesertLady on Sony - Official Store - Apr 24, 2013

I bought this to transition from a television service to hulu and netflix. After troubleshooting for sometime I called hulu and the rep told me that it is common that this particular device is unable to access hulu. The internet is hardly a feature as it is difficult to navigate. Also, the player is 60 Hz and most TVs are now 120 Hz.

Elegance of Sony
5 Star Review   By Shacojin on Sony - Official Store - Feb 28, 2013

Saw the BDP-S3100 at CES 2013 and I was looking into investing in a new blu-ray player since the one I originally bought was a bit sluggish now a days, but still a great piece of tech at the time *Roughly 6 years or so*. I personally love the new design, it’s very beautifully eye catching and its very tiny compared to the original blu-ray player I owned which is fairly large and heavy. Connecting the device to my HDTV is easy enough, although I believe Sony should have packaged an HDMI cable with it. Once plugged in and activated, the menu is very easy to navigate through and similar to the XMB user interface. Loading dvds are naturally fast but what I noticed was the load speed of the blu-rays which were compared to my old blu-ray player, very very quick. Exploring the blu-ray player you will find what I would believe are very common features like looking at your personal pictures and videos or music from either a CD or USB device. All of that is great of course. Then there is the super wifi feature that allows you to not only stream your personal media from your own PC, but allows you to watch NETFLIX or Amazon Prime as well as check your FACEBOOK and other apps as well like Sony’s Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited. The remote is simple to understand and use, also note if you are an avid NETFLIX user like myself who loves “House of Cards” there is a convenient button on the remote “NETFLIX” you press it and it takes you directly there, easy. If you have a Bravia TV and you can utilize the Bravia Sync feature on both, you can unify their connection. If you also have a smart phone or tablet device you can download an APP called TV Sideview and you can control your bluray player with your device of choice. Pretty cool. Overall, beautiful design to go with your entertainment system and great overall performance and abundant features for a Blu-ray player I give this an A++ Highly recommend especially at the price.
