Samsung BD-P1000
2 Star Review  productwiki.com - Oct 29, 2011

The Samsung BD-P1000 is a Profile 1.0 blu-ray player capable of upscaling DVDs to 1080p resolution via HDMI. It was one of the first Blu-ray players ever released. The player features an SD card slot for photo display and MP3 playback. It has 5.1 analog as well as optical and coaxial digital outputs, as well as component, composite and S-video outputs. The player is unable to playback Dolby True HD, Dolby Digital Plus, and DTS-HD audio sources and instead converts them to 5.1 Dolby Digital or DTS signals. The player also does not support HDMI 1.3. Features Profile 1.0 Upconverts DVDs to 720p, 1080i and 1080p via HDMI SD card slot for JPEG and MP3 files 5.1 analog, optical and coaxial digital out Component, composite and S-video out HDMI 1.1 DD, DTS decoder ... PROS: (1) setup and configuration are intuitive, dont need instruction (2) Blu-ray playback is sharp and clear, very detailed and true to the HD standard (3) startup time from standby to watching a movie is less than a minute ... CONS: (1) one of the first Blu-ray players on the market, lacks a lot of the extras that become common in later models (2) upconversion of DVD content doesnt work very well, just seems like stretched SD content (3) priced much higher than the average Blu-ray player, this is the "early adopter" price (4) several discs wont play until a firmware update is installed

1 Star Review

Weakness: The whole unit

Nothing but junk, have owned for 3 years, and every movie I have to update firmware. I have watched 10 movies on this player because it hardly works properly. I will never buy Samsung equipment again!!!!!!!!!

Consider Waiting....
2 Star Review

Strengths: Great quality for the disks that work with it in a bluray format that it accepts.

Weakness: Firmware is needed to get some things (but not all) to work.

Bluray is constantly being upgraded. Small variances in disk manufacturing cause this machine to have stop gaps and even lock up on some movies. Some firmware is available for download, but there are no instructions to get the unzipped files from your pc to the dvd player. I finally got it after wasting some dvd and cd disks. Bluray is really nice especially with Planet Earth (which works okay). However, there are certain movies that will not. I did not do my research before buying. If I had I would have waited another year to see how things shake out.

I won't buy Samsung ever again.
1 Star Review   By member kk6dv - Dec 7, 2007

Strengths: Plays Ok with the remote.

Weakness: All front panel buttons quit functioning prior to 90 days of use. Circuit City wouldn't take it back for repair. Couldn't get a response from local authorized repair.

Still less than a year old, I called Samsung for support. They advised me $85 for repair. I'd have to pay shipping and the unit just isn't worth it. I will never buy another Samsung, my first one proved to be expensive and low quality control from the factory.

BluRay High Def Player
4 Star Review   By member frenna - Mar 25, 2007

Strengths: the quality of the picture is amazing. HDMI output to get hightest possible HD resolution.

Weakness: It is a bit slow queing up the disc / movie.

This is my first HD DVD player. I have been watching the format wars for awhile now and even though the race is just starting, BluRay seems to be the choice of more buyers than HD DVD. Movies are coming out every week from nearly all the studios and first run DVD's are being released in the BluRay format at the same time regular DVD's are being released. I bought Casino Royale and the picture is stunning! I would recommend this player to anyone. It is about $500 cheaper than the Sony player!

Don't bother
1 Star Review

Strengths: Nice picture but only with analog composite cables up to 720p. Don't use HDMI yet since the Samsung hasn't release the firm ware to fix some of the problems.

Weakness: Don't use HDMI yet since the Samsung hasn't release the firm ware to fix some of the problems.

HD DVD has the edge on movies and player quality and it's been out for more time then Blu Ray. Only one player choice HD DVD has 3. I had to sell mine already.

Sony claims this Samsung unit is defective
1 Star Review   By member apollo9k - Jul 26, 2006

Weakness: No Hi-def picture quality and too expensive

I returned this unit after I read that Sony was claiming that Blu Ray's poor picture quality was because this Samsung Blu Ray player was defective. Yet everybody continues to sell it? Samsung says they are working on a fix for the poor picture quality, but that it hasn't been pin-pointed and could be a few months before a solution is found. My experience is that the Blu Ray format itself is defective, not just this player. I'll be waiting until November when the PS3 and Sony Blu Ray player are supposed to be available to make a better judgement.
