Candidate Bio
Lisa Murkowski began her term as Alaska's sixth United States Senator on Dec. 20, 2002. A third generation Alaskan, Murkowski was born and raised in Southeastern Alaska, attended high school in Fairbanks, and has resided in Anchorage for more than 25 years. She has spent a lifetime working throughout Alaska and on Alaskan issues. Murkowski, the first Alaskan-born Senator to serve the State, is only the 33rd female to serve the United States Senate since its founding in 1789. A member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, Senator Murkowski Chairs its subcommittee on Water and Power, and serves on its subcommittees on Energy, and Public Lands and Forests. Murkowski also is a member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, serving on the subcommittees of Transportation and Infrastructure, and Fisheries, Wildlife, and Water. In addition, Senator Murkowski serves on the Veterans Affairs Committee and the Indian Affairs Committee. Senator Murkowski assumed leadership roles quickly in the 108th session, being selected to serve as a Deputy Whip, to assist the Majority Whip on voting strategy and other leadership functions. She was also selected as Chairman of the class of new Senators elected in 2002. Prior to joining the U.S. Senate, Murkowski was elected to three terms in the Alaska State House of Representatives, beginning in 1998. She won subsequent re-elections in 2000 and 2002. Murkowski's State House colleagues selected her as House Majority Leader for the 2003-2004 term. In her time as a State House member, Murkowski served on the Alaska Commission on Post Secondary Education and chaired both the Labor and Commerce, and the Military and Veterans Affairs Committees. She introduced legislation establishing a Joint Armed Services Committee in 1999, where she served throughout her tenure. Murkowski was also a member of the National Council of State Legislatures, the Council of State Governments Executive Committee, and the National Order of Women Legislators. Senator Murkowski graduated from Georgetown University with a degree in Economics in 1980, and earned her law degree from the Willamette College of Law in 1985. She has been a member of the Alaska Bar Association since 1987, served as an Anchorage District Court attorney for two years, and worked in private practice with an Alaska commercial law firm for eight years prior to her work as a sole practitioner. Senator Murkowski has distinguished herself as a community advocate for numerous social service organizations, including the Anchorage Equal Rights Commission, Catholic Social Services, the Mayor's Task Force on the Homeless, Alaskans for Drug-Free Youth, and the Boys and Girls Clubs. She is actively involved in education issues and served as the President of the Government Hill Elementary School PTA. And she is a member of the Civil Air Patrol. Her political activism includes prior service within the State of Alaska as a member of the State Republican Central Committee and as the Republican Chairman of District 14. She also is a member of the Alaska Federation of Republican Women, Midnight Sun Republican Women, and Anchorage Republican Women's Club. Lisa is married to Verne Martell, an Anchorage small business owner, and they have two sons, Nicolas, and Matthew. Lisa enjoys spending time with her family, skiing, fishing, camping, and actively participating in community outreach programs. As a United States Senator, Lisa Murkowski continues to promote issues that are important to Alaska, focusing on energy, natural resources, health care, education, economic development, infrastructure development, veterans affairs, Alaska Native issues and job creation within Alaska. Lisa is passionate about improving opportunities for all Alaskans, and ensuring the Federal government keeps its promises to Alaska at the time of statehood and through subsequent acts of Congress.
