Candidate Bio
Johnny Isakson is a businessman, public servant and family man. His common-sense approach and conservative values have made him a leader in Georgia for over 30 years. Johnny began his business career in 1967 when he opened the first Cobb County office of a small, family-owned real estate business, Northside Realty. In 1979, Johnny became president of Northside and led the company to become the largest independent residential real estate brokerage company in the Southeast and one of the largest in America. An entrepreneur at heart, Johnny brought his real estate experience to the start-up of many small businesses in the fields of insurance, mortgage banking, community banking, development, property management, and utilities. In addition, Johnny was a member of the Executive Committee of the National Association of Realtors, the Board of Directors for the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, the Board of Directors for Riverside Bank, the SunTrust Advisory Board, and President of the Realty Alliance. Johnny is serving his third term in the United States Congress. He was first elected to Congress in 1999, when he won a 6-candidate special election to replace former House Speaker Newt Gingrich with 65 percent of the vote. Johnny is a member of the influential House Transportation Committee and House Education Committee. A staunch supporter of our Commander-in-Chief’s efforts in the war on terror, Johnny has been central to the post-9/11 reforms of our aviation and port systems to better protect our homeland. He has emerged as an expert on education reform issues, co-chairing the Subcommittee on 21st Century Competitiveness and serving as one of the original authors of the President’s No Child Left Behind Act. Profiled in Congressional Quarterly as one of four "Emerging Power Players" on Capitol Hill, Johnny has quickly risen through the ranks and now serves as a Deputy Majority Whip to the House Republican Leadership. Johnny entered Georgia Republican politics in 1974 and was first elected to the State House of Representatives in 1976. From 1983 to 1990 he served as the Republican leader in the state House, where he helped increase Republican numbers in the State House by 85 percent. In 1989, Johnny was one of 10 recipients of the "Best Legislator in America Award" given by the Republican National Committee and went on to become his party’s nominee for Governor in 1990. He continued his public service in 1993 when he was elected to the Georgia State Senate. In 1996, he served as the Georgia Chairman for the Bob Dole for President Campaign. Also in 1996, Governor Zell Miller appointed Johnny as the first Republican Chairman of the Georgia Board of Education, where he served until he was elected to Congress in 1999. Under his leadership, Georgia’s public school experienced an increase in local control, an overhaul of the Quality Core Curriculum, and for the first time included character education as a component of the curriculum. Johnny has worked tirelessly to bring tax reform and regulatory relief to Georgia’s small businesses and working families. In 1989, he led the fight to defeat a 33 percent increase in the state sales tax and authored the state’s privatization law. He has continued his efforts in Congress as a taxpayer champion and small business advocate by supporting the President’s 2001 and 2003 tax relief packages and introducing legislation to eliminate the tax on capital gains. Among the recognition for Johnny’s years of hard work on behalf of the taxpayers are the Americans for Tax Reform "Hero of the Taxpayer Award", the National Tax Limitation Committee's "Tax Fighter Award", the McCutcheon-Poole "Taxpayer Champion Award", and the "Guardian of Small Business Award." Johnny has developed a reputation during his 30 years of service as a firm defender of balanced budgets and responsible spending. In the state Senate, he forced Georgia’s budget process to a halt in order to eliminate wasteful pork-barrel spending. In Congress, he has introduced sunshine legislation to eliminate wasteful pork projects in Congressional budgets and is an original co-sponsor of a constitutional amendment that would force Congress to balance the federal budget each year. Johnny received a B.B.A. from the University of Georgia in 1966 and served in the Georgia Air National Guard from 1966 to 1972. Johnny and his wife, Dianne, have been married 36 years and have three children and four grandchildren. The Isaksons are active members of Mount Zion United Methodist Church where Johnny has taught sixth grade Sunday School since 1978.
