| Candidate Bio |
| Congresswoman Denise Majette is a life-long public servant who has spent her career fighting for Georgia families.
Denise was born into a working-class family—her mother a teacher and her father a civil servant—who instilled in her the values of hard work, dedication to public service and strong religious beliefs. It is these childhood lessons that guided her life and her rise from these roots, against tremendous odds, to become one of the first African American women to attend Yale University and Duke University School of Law.
Upon graduating from Duke, Majette answered the call of public service, joining Legal Aid in Winston-Salem, N.C. as a staff attorney. At Legal Aid, Denise helped hard-working families who were struggling to make ends meet.
After moving to Georgia in 1983, Denise continued working for her community serving as law clerk for Judge Robert Benham of the Georgia Court of Appeals, a Special Assistant Attorney General and an Administrative Law Judge on the State Board of Workers’ Compensation. Then in 1993, Denise was appointed as a judge on the State Court of DeKalb County, where she earned a reputation for being tough on crime while protecting individual rights.
In 2002, Denise resigned from the bench and was elected to Congress, where she has been delivering common-sense leadership and results to Georgia’s 4th Congressional District.
In Congress, Denise has been recognized as a talented legislator who works well with colleagues on both sides of the aisle. As a member of the influential House Budget Committee she fought for the priorities of Georgia’s seniors, veterans and children.
A public school mom and Member of the House Education Committee, Denise led the fight in Congress to fully fund No Child Left Behind and Head Start.
The daughter of a World War II veteran, Denise understands the importance of a strong national defense and has fought to keep the promises our country made to veterans and their families.
A former small business owner, Denise knows firsthand the contributions entrepreneurs make to this nation’s economy. On the Small Business Committee, she stood up for them against Republican efforts to gut the Small Business Administration. She has also worked to help small business owners gain access to capital to keep Georgians working.
Denise has never forgotten her modest roots and the value of hard work, and will continue to make working Georgia families her top priority in the United States Senate.
Denise lives in Stone Mountain, Georgia with her husband and their two sons. They are active members of Antioch A.M.E. Church.
