Description
Wireless-G is the upcoming 54Mbps wireless networking standard that's almost five times faster than the widely deployed Wireless-B (802.11b) products found in homes, businesses, and public wireless hotspots around the country -but since they share the same 2.4GHz radio band, Wireless-G devices can also work with existing 11Mbps Wireless-B equipment. The new Wireless-G Notebook Adapter from Linksys has both standards built in, so you can connect your notebook to existing 802.11b infrastructure, and also the new screaming fast Wireless-G networks. The included Setup Wizard will walk you through configuring the adapter to your network's settings, step by step. Then just slide it into your notebook's PC Card slot and enjoy network access with your notebook computer, while retaining true mobility. Once you're connected, you can keep in touch with your e-mail, access the Internet, and share files and other resources such as printers and network storage with other computers on the network, wherever you wander. At home, you can surf the web or use instant messaging to chat with friends while sitting out on the patio. You'll also be able to connect with any of the growing number of public wireless hotspots springing up in coffee shops, airport lounges, hotels and convention centers. And as those hotspots upgrade to the new high-speed Wireless-G standard, you'll be ready to take advantage of the increased speeds. Get connected to current-standard 802.11b networks today, and be prepared for the future with the Wireless-G Notebook Adapter from Linksys.

Works As Expected
5 Star Review   By member Stuart from Shoreline - May 14, 2009

Strengths: Works just fine. Since it is wireless, it is somewhat dependent on signal strength.

I purchased the WPC54G to use in an older Sony VAIO. It brought it into the wireless world. It is dependent on signal strength, but appears to work at least as well as built-in wireless.

Good product
4 Star Review   By member iluecht - Jul 14, 2008

Strengths: Easy to use and set up

Linksys products are always the easiest and most reliable to set up a small home wireless network. Great product and support. Use with the Linksys Wireless Router.

WPC54G has low signal reception capability
2 Star Review   By member tonya2 - Feb 26, 2008

Strengths: None compared to other adapters.

Weakness: Requires a stronger signal than other adapters.

Received signal strength readings are lower with this adapter than with other adapters that we used e. g. the Linksys WUSB54G. It works but not satisfactorily. I would not recommend purchasing it.

Linksys WPC54G Wireless Network Adapter Card
4 Star Review   By member T. Brown - Jul 26, 2007

Strengths: Does as expected works seamlessly changing from 802.11 g to 802.11b.

Weakness: None.

When I looking to buy a networking product I always start with Linksys. I have had nothing but good experiences with their products. Only issue is tech support sometime I get someone I have a hard time understanding.

3 Star Review   By member woodla - Mar 23, 2007

Strengths: Easy to install. Fairly good signal reception.

Weakness: Earlier rev, before 3.0, didn't work right. See comments. LED indicators are also very dim.

Be sure to get rev. 3 of the card. It's only marked on the card, not the box so it was a problem when looking on the store shelf. Since earlier revs. are now obsolete it shouldn't be a problem at retail anymore. Earlier rev. (before 3.0) didn't work properly with encrypted signals but ok on open sites. Now own 3 cards, all rev. 3 and all work properly.

Great Product
4 Star Review   By member Cantmeswitdis - Jan 23, 2007

Strengths: Great product for wireless home networking.

Weakness: It's great, but now wireless N cards with extremely more range are available.

Excellent product and the seller is fast when shipping. I would def buy again unless I was in need of better range, then I would buy a Wireless N card.

Works Great!
5 Star Review   By member pwhite144 - Dec 24, 2006

Strengths: Easy setup. Just pop the CD in and go to town.

This card works great. I have used other brands and they never work as easy as a linksys card does. I would recommend it to anyone who wants wireless. There are faster cards with better range available, but for the price, this is definitely a better buy.

The software that comes with the card is bloatware, but the card itself is a good one, and works great once installed correctly. Just pop in the card, boot the laptop, let Winders detect it, and browse to the driver.

5 Star Review   By member quintael - Jun 14, 2005

Strengths: Great installation CD, fully prepares the operating system for both operation and security configuration. Could not be easier.

Weakness: None. Great performance, easy installation, great value.

Whether you are a novice or an expert in configuring wireless cards, this card is for you. Quick, simple and easy to install, but packed with the features you have come to expect from LinkSys. Security options are easy to understand and quick to configure and most importantly, work right out of the box. Add to that a very inexpensive price point backed by a leading networking vendor and you have a great combination.

5 Star Review   By member eightyhertz - May 26, 2005

Strengths: 802.11g (AES/TKIP), Linksys/Cisco brand, good reception, and fast speed

Weakness: None so far

Good reception, and most importantly, you get 802.11g with AES! Note that WEP keys with B networks are easily broken... this is the reason why I'm getting a card that supports G. I'm using this with a Linksys WRT54G. I set it up easily on a Win XP laptop, no problems. You don't need to install the provided Linksys software if you don't want it, just install the drivers and manage the wireless connection in Windows.

4 Star Review   By member chinito - Feb 25, 2005

Strengths: Price (or at least the final price after rebates), easy to set up (Software CD included)...

Weakness: Weak led signal...

Using it with Windows XP, so... no problems at all.... I'm not sure if there's any difference within brands... just happens that for some reason I like Linksys brand for my Windows based devices (so far, router, range extender, pci internal card for my desktop and this one for my laptop, my PowerBook comes with an internal one, lol)...

4 Star Review   By member deshwasi - Feb 10, 2005

Strengths: Signal Strength, Speed, Brand.

This is a great wireless G card for notebooks. It works everywhere in my 3 storey house and gives good download speed on my Cable internet connection. Setup was easy and card works as advertised. Although it doesnt have the speedbooster functionality, it works great when paired with a Linksys router. Its a bit expensive compared to other brands but is worth it.

4 Star Review   By member textbooksintl - Feb 7, 2005

Strengths: Linksys Brand!, very rarely looses connection

Weakness: none as yet

This is my 2nd card, I had one earlier too and it worked great...linksys router and linksys card...It always gave me problems with an SMC router at my uncles place (I really do think the SMC router was crappy), but never ever gave me a problem with the linksys router. Infact even my laptop which has an inbuilt card gave me problems with that SMC router but worked great with the linksys router. If you get the linksys router with speed booster it would only make sense to buy the speed booster card too!

2 Star Review   By member thatseattleguy - Jan 19, 2005

Strengths: Seems to have adequate range,

Weakness: Setup/configuration utilities are incompatible with Win98 SE.

After days of trying, and numerous calls to Linksys Tech support (in the Phillipines) I still could not get the included configuration software to let me set the adapter's IP address or DHCP settings. Apparently these just don't work under Windows 98 and Linksys isn't really interested in fixing it for that "mature" segment of the market.

Strengths: gives me access to the Internet from my laptop at school

Weakness: power hungry

This is a great product because it gives me a fairly relible conncetion to my universities wireless network when there so I can look things up on the internet without going to find a free computer. The one big drawback is that it eats my laptop's battery really quickly.

Strengths: Works with Windows XP, however not perfect

Weakness: Twice crashed Windows 98 SE in my HP laptop, but information on package promiced, that card compartable with Windows 98

Would not recommend to use with Windows 98SE. I had to reinstalled Windows 98 twice and was not happy about it. Trendware PC card 802.11g had no problem with Windows 98SE on same computer.

4 Star Review   By member spidey825 - Nov 24, 2004

Strengths: Easy to install. Support software easy to navigate.

Weakness: None that I have found.

I was skepitcal at first when buying this card for my IBM laptop (with TI pcmcia drivers) based on one of the feedback articles written. I had no trouble with ver. 1.2 or ver. 2.0. They installed just fine. This card works great for the internet and with my work VPN. The range seems fine in all parts of my house.

2 Star Review   By member deezlman - Nov 10, 2004

Strengths: Linksys Tech Support and dedication to customer satisfaction.

Weakness: Would not work with my IBM laptop because it was not compatible with the Texas Instruments PCI CardBus Controller. Average transmit power. Range is OK, not great.

When I was unable to get the card to work, I phoned Linksys support. They agreed to replace my Ver. 2 card with an older Ver. 1 which works with my Texas Instruments controller. Check with Linksys before ordering this card if your PC uses a TI PCMCIA contoller. After all that, the performance of the card is not great anyway, on either B or G networks. I now use a USB adapter instead, attached to the back of my laptop with Velcro. Ugly, but the range is better. Sad that more manufacturers don't advertise transmit power. SMC builds some of the only products I see it listed on.

3 Star Review   By member seephor - Oct 14, 2004

Strengths: fairly good range. Fine for surfing the internet.

Weakness: no support for network analysis applications due to chipset.

I have to admit that it was my fault for not researching more on wireless network adapters before purchasing one but this linksys WPC54G adapter uses a chipset which is not supported by most (probably all) wireless network analysis utilities out there. I made the assumption that linksys is well known so support for it shouldn't be a problem but I was wrong! If you are using this for normal everyday use to connect to your local network and browse the internet then this is fine for you but if you intend to use this for network analysis then stay away from this model and go with the Cisco adapter (a bit pricey) or the Linksys WPC55AG.

Strengths: Great signal receiving, easy from home to office

Weakness: none so far!

This has been a great card. I move easily from my house (802.11b) to my office (802.11g). Good range around both, but not great. Worth the money spent!
