Just a Box - nothing else in it!
1 Star Review

Strengths: Nothing

Weakness: The entire product

Absolute rubbish. A pain in the backside to install, asking me for a password to my router that isnt even set. Telling me to make sure its powered on during the install when it was. Just powers off occasionally (or whenever it feels like it) and to top i off, the internet wont run through it, while its on - no iter. Whichthe reason I bought it in the first place was to share it, not have nothing at all! Worst router I have ever come across in my life. Buy and be disapointed.

Piece of Junk!
1 Star Review   By member anon234 - Apr 2, 2007

Weakness: Everything

Initial hookup was easy, but after about 10 minutes I could no longer access the internet. I got the latest firmware upgrade, drivers, etc., went through all the suggested self-help, but all with the same results. After waiting on hold multiple times, being disconnected, and being stepped through the standard helpdesk script multiple times (at a painfully slow speed), I gave up and did what I should have done in the first place - I bought a Linksys router. I've had it for a week now with no problems whatsoever.

D-Link router
1 Star Review   By Teresa on Provantage (Channel Engine) - Feb 14, 2007

Strengths: None the product did not work for me

Weakness: Technicians are no help and customer support puts you in a loop where you never get a resolution

My D-Link router quit working after 2 months. The technicians kept putting me on hold and never could get it to work. When I requested a number to send in for repair I got a level 2 technician. Again, no luck and I finally gave up. He said there were other ways to get it to work. Why didn't he try those in the first place. Waste of money and time.

If you only need a router for about a year, then this may be for you.
2 Star Review   By member ickyptang - Feb 10, 2007

Strengths: When it works, it works pretty well.

Weakness: After roughly a year the device crapped out. Tech support was absolutely horrible.

The product worked more or less flawless until it was about a year old. After that time it just stopped working properly. The computer it was hard-wired to would give messages indicating that "a network cable has been unplugged" only to re-gain connection a mere 5 seconds later. Then, one day the wireless connection began to work very, very poorly. A laptop connected to the network began to move have very slow connection speeds, and then the wireless connection began to drop intermittently. The laptop, a Nintendo DS Lite, and a Nintendo Wii, all of which previously worked very well on the network, stopped being able to connect the network. They all read a strong signal from the router, but were not able to connect to the Internet. It was as if the router was not able to bridge the connection between the wireless signal and the cable modem. I tried a number of things, include resetting the modem and flashing the firmware, but nothing worked. I then called D-Link tech support and after being told to tweak a few settings, was told to buy a new router. The tech support was laughably bad. So, it looks like I need to buy a new router. In short, I would avoid getting this product.

D Link sucks
1 Star Review

Strengths: Cheap? But you get what you pay for

Weakness: They dont work

I had a D-Link router for a couple of years. It had its glitches but overall worked. It died last week and I tried to replace it with two othe D-Link units. One configured fine but after 10 minutes of operation it would die. Power cycle and it would work again. The other unit worked fine until I tried to reconfigure it. Then it hung up and needed reset. Returned both to Fry's and ended up with a Linksys. Had to upgrade that firmware too but excellent tech support had me going in about an hour (no wait on phone time at all). Yes its about $50 vs $15 (after rebate) but its much more stable and worth it to get the Linksys.

Piece of junk
1 Star Review

Strengths: None when compared to other routers

Weakness: Drops connections, locks up way too much

E-mail tech support runs in circles Phone tech support is rude and will not make it easy for the customer to get a replacement And the router locks up every day and must be rebooted. Do not buy this router. Go for a linksys.

deserved nothing better than a 0 rating
1 Star Review

Strengths: sometimes it actually works!

Weakness: 2. SSH session into my home box lasts no more than 1 minute 3. Constantly disconnects MSN for no reason at all 4. Freezes after power cycling

Imagine you spend days to emerge Gentoo linux because your router always hangs when emerge downloads packages Imagine you have to call the tech support on the phone in order to get an RMA, yet no one works at the tech support to pick up the phone Imagine you paid for a piece of junk, and in order to get a replacement, you have to pay for the shipping back to the factory Imagine when you get very upset and told the customer relations that you will either choose a different brand or even to bring this matter into a court, the rep simply laughed and said "it is certainly an option for you, sir" Imagine no more. With D-Link, you get all this bundled with a router that sometimes actually worked!

First wireless setup in 2 story apt. with 7 machines.
4 Star Review

Strengths: Easy setup, small, 80% reliable, will stream video and music fine.

Weakness: Azerus and other downloading programs will work, but very inconsistant download speeds.

Lets see, i set it up in living room top bookshelf, had media machine, 2 in bed room, 2 in roomates bedroom, and 2 laptops, all would stream fine from media machine with video and music since media machine was 600 gig. anime, dvd movies, everything streamed fine, i spent 1 day going through all channels and tweaking it, as everyone wireless person knows, anything can cause interference... so really give it time and see what channels work best, that and i had some dork next door with one, and he was on same channel, so i switched to another one, worked fine. security is great, im very pleased with it, and it was 15 bucks from frys' on open box, and there generic g cards were 9 bucks each, all in all, everything worked fine for under 50 bucks.

Possibly the worst piece or IT hardware I've EVER bought
1 Star Review   By member tjkrem - Jun 30, 2006

Strengths: Lasts hours at a time without locking up.

Weakness: Locks up daily. Hardboot requires reflash of firmware. Fails daily.

It is junk. Possibly the worst piece or IT hardware I've EVER bought. Buy something else, anything else has to work better. Had it replaced under warranty from DLink - replacement was beat up used one that locks up just like the first one.

WPA/WPA2 doesn't work with WinXP MCE SP2
2 Star Review

Strengths: Performs well if you don't need security

Weakness: WPA/WPA2 didn't work

I have a Dell E1705 with Win XP Media Center Edition with SP2. I even installed the HotFix for WPA2. I have RevC with firmware 3.20. When using WPA or WPA2, the thing gets stuck at 'acquiring network address' or some such, and never finishes. Maybe if you use firmware 3.02 it will work but then no WPA2...

I got this for free and still thought it was garbage
2 Star Review   By member fishandring - Jun 7, 2006

Strengths: small and easy to fit in a junction box

Weakness: constantly dropped wireless connections

I got this as I said for free as a "gift" from the builder when I moved in my new house. So, I figured I would give it a try since it was the smallest home router I've seen in a while. It fits really well in the media panel in the new house. Except that I had constantly dropped connections from the laptops I tried on it. As comparison, I also happen to own 2 Belkin F5D72314 routers (long story) and 1 Linksys WRT54GS running dd-wrt. Those work fine in the same place in the house and in fact all three will carry a good signal 2 houses away. I did not however immediately rule out the router as junk. I first went to www.dslreports.com and ran the tweak test on my wireless network adapter on each laptop. Oddly, both my laptops had improper MTU and RWIN settings. I changed those settings on both laptops and it helped...some. I still had dropped connections except it was only every 10 minutes rather than the 1 to 5 minutes before the changes. Bottomline, I have a brand new router if anyone needs a dlink...

Don't buy even if the price is $5
1 Star Review   By member fsaguirre - May 31, 2006

Strengths: Nothing

Weakness: It crash every day. Tech support sucks, you will waste your time calling them.

My router was crashing every day, I call tech support, they asked to reset the device at least 5 times during a call waiting up to 15 min every time. They never accepted that it was defective. I just gave up. If you value your money and time don't purchase a D-Link product. I got a Netgear and is working great, is a little bit more expensive but it worths.

Great with firmware mod, unusable without.
4 Star Review   By member davidjtemple - May 30, 2006

Strengths: After firmware mod - fast, reliable, stable, and easy to configure.

Weakness: Included firmware (Revision D, 4.0, newest version) is junk. Overheated, dropped connection, constantly needed resetting.

Like some other posters, I had read the 1-in-5 bad reviews and decided to play the odds. My results upon plugging the unit in and configuring were typical - dropped the connection, or kept the connection but couldn't get to the internet. The problem was 5 times worse after enabling wireless security - totally unusable. I had gone so far as gettine a RMA# from buy.com to return the unit and buy a Linksys, when I stumbled upon a forum thread that showed a fix: www.dslreports.com/for... This recommended installing the firmware from the D-link WBR-1310-A1. Apparrently, this unit uses the same board, but different firmware. You can find this firmware here: support.dlink.com/prod... Once I flashed this firmware onto the unit, it worked flawlessly. Wireless security works, and the user interface is actually a little better. I recommend buying this router for its cheap price and making this modification to make it work.

Don't buy Version D1 (FW version 4.0)
1 Star Review   By member zimtekcom - May 27, 2006

Strengths: I've used this router for almost 2 years and prior hardware versions were great.

Weakness: It looks and feels just like earlier hardware versions that I found very reliable... But the current version is not relaible.

Current version D1 has some design flaws and freezes up regularly... I've had 3 so far with the same issue. I seems to be an overheat issue, but unknown... It just freezes up and needs to be reset with power cycle... one of mine froze up and died permanently. on start up it would freeze and never initialize and start. 3 out of 3 from different sources with very different serial numbers would indicate that this is not simply a bad lot, but a major design flaw. Don't buy D-Link DI-524 Hardware Version D1. (version E has recently been released, but D-link won't give me one as replacement).

Cheap junk & Clueless Tech Support
1 Star Review   By member agritschke - May 9, 2006

Strengths: works great as a supplementary space heater

Weakness: randomly disconnects will not stream music without interruptions incompetent tech support

I bought this because of its $20 pricepoint. I returned the first unit to Amazon upon advice from tech support. Over the last four months I've spent in excess of 20 hours on hold and with tech support, trying to get a steadier connection to the internet. This unit only connects to the internet when it feels like it, and will not stream music, no matter which source or bandwidth. Both are things that I can accomplish easily when I connect directly through my DSL modem. It slows down your internet connection when you connect through this router, rather than directly through the DSL modem. Do not try to call tech support evenings or weekends! Today, tech support suggested I return the product (again) and was generous enough to provide me a return authorization. They admitted that they have issues with the firmware on this particular model. What they didn't say is that they will charge your credit card in excess of $80, that you'll have to pay for shipping expenses, that they'll keep $8 if they feel there's nothing wrong with your unit, that they don't know if they have replacement units in stock right now, that they will send you a refurbished unit for mailing in one that you bought new, etc. I finally decided to cut my losses with D-link and give Linksys a try!

Great Deal
3 Star Review   By member jbhthree - May 3, 2006

Strengths: Cheap

Weakness: None so far

Very reasonable, $40-25 rebate. It installed fairly easily... I originally tried to have it attach to one of the unused lan-side ports of my wired router (netgear), but I couldn't get that to work. I ended up removing the netgear router and using this as the only router (it has 4 wired ports, just like my netgear). No problems so far.

Horrible technic support
2 Star Review   By member milkhsieh - Apr 27, 2006

Strengths: easy setup

Weakness: not stable, wireless fail sometimes

I work as an IT in a small firm, I use the same router at home as well, never has a problem. Then I bought another one for my office, after 2 monts experience, the wireless and wire signal down and I reset the router, upgrade the firmware, none of these process work. I called the Dlink for help. After doing the same process I have done, the first level technician assign me a case number to level 2. So I wait another 30 mins to talk to level 2 technician and repeat the same process. Then he assign me to level 3 and wait for an hour...(what a joke). For a $15 product after rebate, I have to spend more than 2 hour to get the RMA. Totally horrible technic support and really not a reliable service.

Strengths: Easy setup, good wireless coverage, no problems

Weakness: used to be difficult to tweak

their new setup wizard is really cool, and they make it really easy for the no-tech crowd of home users to set up a home network by linking to Network Magic.

great for the money
4 Star Review   By member zenstate - Apr 7, 2006

Strengths: easy setup, good security options, good web interface

Weakness: sometimes it hangs on a restert from the interface

one of the best things about this is it supports 63 character 256bit WPA passphrases. this means virtually uncrackable wifi. very stable operation and all round good performance. one problem I have is sometimes when I restart the router from the control interface it hangs. other than this its great.

Dropped connections
1 Star Review   By member dgrassmann_1097445668 - Apr 2, 2006

Strengths: Inexpensive

Weakness: Drops connection, forcing frequent resets

This was the second of three wireless routers I installed at my daughter's apartment in the last 24 hours. The first, a Belkin Wireless G router, wouldn't properly initialize after being connected to the cable modem. Various reboots of both cable modem and router didn't help. I called Belkin's 24/7 tech support number and waited on hold for 30 minutes waiting for an answer, but no one answered. There was no indication of how long it would be before someone got around to my call, so I gave up. A total of two hours wasted. Next, I exchanged the Belkin for this D-Link DI-524. Some reviews on this website suggested I might have problems with disconnects, but a store clerk assured me this was a more reliable product than the Belkin. What's more, the D-Link was less expensive after rebate. Unfortunately, it was also difficult to initialize. I could easily get an Internet connection going between PC and cable modem, as with the Belkin, but for some reason the D-Link router wouldn't establish a connection to the cable modem. I restarted the installation sequence, and performed various reboots of cable and router. Suddenly the units linked up and I thought I'd solved the problem. I maintained a connection long enough to browse the Internet for a few minutes, then I quickly secured the router (turned off broadcast SSID, turned on MAC filters, changed admin passwords, etc.) Another two hours passed, but at least I thought I was done. The next morning, my daughter gently let me know the D-Link router didn't stay connected. I visited her apartment and tested it out. Seems I was facing another sequence of rebooting cable modem and router again to keep the Internet connection operating. In other words, I thought I could beat the odds and avoid problems I had read on this website. I was not so lucky. Back to the store it went. This time I purchased a Linksys Wireless G router. It installed like a dream. The unit initialized immediately. I logged in, made the necessary security enhancements, and was finished in perhaps 15 minutes. It may have been less time than that. I've set up wireless networks before. This is the experience I was looking for. Linksys is my brand from now on. No more overlooking poor customer service (Belkin!), and no more overlooking spotty reviews (D-Link!) on sites like this hoping to beat the odds.

Seems to work, but securiity documentation is poor
4 Star Review

Strengths: Installed easily. Works fine. No disconnects after changing from channel 6 (defalt) to channel 3. I guess there is something in the neighborhood already using 6.

Weakness: Manuals and on-line documentation terrible for someone new to networking. Initial install works, but I'm still fighting security settings.

I bough a combo package from Best Buys that included a DWL-G122 USB adaptor. For $30 (if they pay the rebate), the combo price can't be beat. The Quick Start guide they referred to was not included in the package. Following CD instructions got both computers online quickly with no security. Documentation on security settings proved useless. Finally, after uninstalling the trial version of Network Magic (USELESS AT BEST), Windows was able to install WEP security. I'm still trying to go to the promised WPA security. And the DWL-G122 configuration utility just doesn't even load. You are on your own to manually set security.

5 Star Review

Strengths: Easy connectivity after downloading frimware 1.05 Good speed, solid performance over a year plus I got this and a USB wireless device for the price of this 524

Weakness: Faster models are out but not at the price I paid.

I have absolutely great experience with this. Internet connectivity came easy. Networking other computers at home took a little while due to sotware firewalls and MS Win but not due to this device. I have a solid. fast home network with three devices (including a Palm) access the net and each other!

unpredictable behaviour
1 Star Review

Strengths: It is small!

Weakness: log always defaults to 2002 and doesn't always log into my network

Overall not very impressed with this product and would not recommend it. I used to own a Linksys that had 100% success rate when logging into my ISP. Now with the D-Link I am at about 50% success rate. I find this behaviour when both connected via Ethernet or wireless. I have two additional peeves with this product: 1. The log files always default back to 2002 even after setting the date. 2. Whenever you make a change to the system config the box requires a reboot. Sigh!

Dirt even with the upgrade to the firmware 1.20 the router it doesn't work appropriately, their speed transfer dramatically low when enabling the security wap and it even loses the connection and of the support of D-Link, better no way I take two weeks waiting their answer after having spoken for but of 1 hour in an occasion and one an a half hour in another with their technical support and to have sent several e-mails

Strengths: good signal reception and eay to use different computers and wireless cards with it

Weakness: Hastendency to load up and slow down-usually must unplug the router, let it reset and plug it back in daily

The product works and is reliable but it requires daily maintence-ie. you must reset it at least once daily. It is relatively inexpensive and im not sorry that i purchased it but think i would purchase a little better quality unit in the future

DI-524 802.11g 54Mbps Wireless Cable/DSL Router
2 Star Review

Strengths: Easy setup

Weakness: Drops connection, power adjustment doesn't work properly, wireless throughput degrades even in 54MB/s mode compare to wired connection.

I used this router for 2.5 month now and I do not think it was very good choice. The biggest complain that wireless connection is not very stable. Sometimes it stays connected for several days or a week and sometimes drops 3-4 times a day. Second complain is data rate difference between wired connection and wireless. When link reports excelent signal strength the wired download rate is about 4MB/s while wireless delivers only ~2.5MB/s. Also agjusting output power by 1dB leads to significant power drop on remote. I contacted tech support and they suggested to exchange the unit, but new unit performs in exactly the same way. Upgrading firware didn't solve these issues either.

Strengths: Easy to setup

Weakness: Disconnect constantly

I must be one of the unlucky one because mine keeps disconnecting me every hour or so. Updating the firmware to 2.0 didn't help either. I have to hook my computer to the DSL modem directly most of the time when I wanna play game or download something. I'm gonna return this and exchange for another one, hopefully it won't have the same problem

Great router if you don't care about security
1 Star Review   By member clamskipper - Sep 16, 2005

Strengths: Easy set up when not using encryption, decent signal strength

Weakness: I had to tweak the settings and firmware endlessly to get the thing to even connect when using WPA. Connections kept dropping when more than one computer was hooked up to it.

This seems like a good cheap starter router. However, if you care about network security and enable WPA, it becomes an ordeal to even get the thing to connect. I tried every revision of firmware and tweaked the router settings for days to get it to connect. Once I finally established a WPA connection, the signal strength would either fade out or I'd lose my internet connection while keeping a great connection to the router. The only way I could make this thing work was to connect its WAN port to a LAN port on my USR non-wireless router, which is asinine. If more than one computer is connected, the connections drop every few minutes and you have to reboot the router. I had absolutely no problems when I didn't enable encryption, but there's no way that I'd leave my network open to attack just to get a router to work. Read other reviews of this thing - it is a problematic router.

Strengths: Connectivity, price, sleek look, easy to set-up

Weakness: None!

It was unbelievable on how easy this was to set-up. The DI-524 did everything it was suppose to do. I did the set-up in less than 10 minutes including the WPA, MAC security and DHCP configurations. I also did the firmware update right away which was also very simple. I configured the router and I was surfing the web within no time. I own a two story house and I got a 54 Mbps even in the basement while the router was on the second floor!!! I didn’t have to call tech support so I can’t comment on that. I am going to purchase a wireless NIC for my other machines from D-link too. I highly recommend this product for anyone who needs a good/simple wireless solution.

Strengths: I have found this to be an great router, it is easy to setup and very secure. it is a great product for the price.

Weakness: I have not found any weakness, exept for the fact it does not keep your setting if you up grade the firmware. but there is the backup utility that you can use before hand.

In the end i think this is a good router for the price, the firewall features, VPN, mac filtering, and WPA setting make it a great buy and useful tool to add to any network for security.

Strengths: easy setup, large number of setup options

Weakness: manual could have been a little more informative

From reading many reviews of wireless router products, it seemed to me that there wasn't one particular brand of router that was better than the others. I expected problems from my DI-524 from the start, however I was pleasantly surprised to have the thing up and running in a few minutes. The DI-524 had a large number of options for dictating security. Some useful features I found among them were changing the WAN, LAN, and DHCP settings; IP, MAC, and domain filters; disabling the SSID broadcast, and the ability to turn down the transmit power. Even at 50% power I was able to get reasonable signal strength from the opposite side of my house. The manual didn't explain all the options available in the DI-524. There are help files on the router that are accessible via a web browser, but sometimes these just repeat the information already on the settings page. However, there is a lot of info on the web that will help you in securing your wireless network. I have yet to deal with the technical support people, so I can't comment on that. Given that many people seem to have trouble with wireless routers, I recommend purchasing one from a local source with a good return policy. Although you can get them cheaper from internet distributors up front, local sources generally have rebates that let you get the routers for very cheap.

Strengths: Quick, easy setup. Good coverage over all 3 floors of my house.

Weakness: None yet.

I previously owned a wired D-Link router that was beginning to become obsolete with a number of wireless devices working their way into my home, such as TiVo and my laptop. I never had any problems with my previous router and decided to stay with D-Link. The setup for the wireless router was essentially the same, easy setup I completed 3 years ago for the wired router. The router/wireless access point works exactly as described and I would recommend this product for anyone looking to add wireless capability to their home network.

Strengths: Installation is easy, signal is strong and connection is relatively stable compared to the Belkin F5D7230-4. It can also be placed vertically to save some space and help ventilation.

Weakness: The setting interface isn't very friendly. You might need to know some network basics to have a idea which option is best for you. D-link provides some basic knowledge in the product manual though.

So far so good since I bought it two days ago. I only reboot it once after 4 hours of continuous internet TV. I hope it will hold its strength!

5 Star Review   By member Efessen - Feb 19, 2005

Strengths: Fast. Reliable. No disconnections. Easy setup.

Weakness: Makes a low whirring sound.

When I first researched wireless networking, I was a bit skeptical because there can be lots of factors in over-the-air signals that can downgrade the connection. A wired network, however, can go as far as the wire goes (to a certain extent). So I read up on the different brands that offer wireless routers & adapters and concluded that D-Link was the most consistently favored brand overall. After using this brand in my routers and adapters, I have to agree that D-Link is the best brand when it comes to wireless. I've had a lot of troubles setting up other brands' wireless networks for friends that I refuse to touch them now. I live in a two-story house with four bedrooms, so you can tell that a wireless signal will have lots of trouble around this house. The router is in one corner downstairs while most of the computers in the house are in the opposite corner upstairs. At the beginning we had lots of weak signals with this router but after buying additional antennas for the adapters the signals went up considerably and have not had any disconnections since. (the ones that come with the adapters should really be replaced.) The speeds go as fast as the cable modem goes so as long as the cable modem speed is fully utilized, I cannot complain. I know that others use a cable modem (3MBps) with a wireless network but the computers only use up about 1MBps. That's a waste of 2/3 of the bandwidth but I'm glad to say that's not happening with the DI-524. When I'm near the DI-524 router, I hear a low whirring sound that I do not know how to get rid of. I have a D-Link 8-port switch as well and that makes the same noise. I guess it's part of the D-Link product line but I wish it would go away. I'm not near the router much of the day so I cannot complain too much about it, I guess. In summary, yes, I would recommend this router over other brands. This router is very low-cost as it is advertised with many stores on a weekly basis so there's no excuse to say the DI-524 is not affordable. Stick with Wireless-G and make sure the brand name is D-Link.

Strengths: Cheap, easy to install

Weakness: not compatible with Earthlink DSL, bad rebate situation

Bought at OfficeMax. Good price after rebate.(If I have room I'll report on that fiasco!) Less than $45 for router and adapter. Installed DSL through Earthlink at the same time. After working on making the two work together, D-Link technician talked me through a work-around that skipped Earthlink Start screen and DSL was loaded by going to Internet Explorer. This meant that I could not use TotalAccess, Earthlink's email system and other Total Access features in the wireless mode. The only email system available to me was Webmail and Outlook Express if I wanted to use the Wireless connection. If I hardwired the DSL modem to my computer. I asked the Earthlink tech about this and he said that was the only way I could access TotalAccess, (i.e.hardwire it)using D-Link! I've just bundled the router and the card adapter up and I am going to try to return them. The rebate situation is still up in the air.Because I submitted a rebate request on each item to the company, they said that I did not qualify for a rebate. I have refuted that and sent them documentation but have not heard back. What a mess!

Strengths: Easy set-up. Good signal strength. Contuous online connection with no drop-outs. Small foot print.

Weakness: None in my opinion. Will do only 54Mbps, compared to its sibling DI-624 which does 108Mbps.

I bought this router to replace an Adaptec 802.11b router. The price was very reasonable, and with a mail-in-rebate to boot. Set-up was very easy and I was up and running in 5 minutes. Right off the blocks, I noticed that signal strength was better, range was improved, and internet surfing was faster compared to my old router. Over the past months, I've also noted that this router has never dropped my internet conneciton. I remember I used to have to restart my Adaptec every so often to reacquire internet connection. Not so with the D-Link. I am currently using it with a microsoft PCI adapter in my desktop, and a built-in Dell wireless card in my laptop. And the router has been able to play well with wireless adapters from other manufacturers. Overall, I am very satisfied with the D-Link 524. And for the price I got it after rebate, it was a steal.

Strengths: less expensive , easy to install

Weakness: customer support is not so good

With that said, my experience with the DI-524 was about average. The functionality and features were there, but the Mozilla issues plus the weird "bug" with forwarded ports not forwarding lead to my less than good opinion of the unit. Tech support wasn't the best in the industry, but I found it better than Linksys and Netgear. In the end I'm not sure if I'll hold-on to it. On a side note, it's funny how all the manufacturers are creating their own "high-speed mode", "super-G", etc standards so that they lock customers into their equipment. :)

Strengths: Solid wired routing, Extremely easy to use.

Weakness: Wireless is hard to work with and my disconnection problem.

I bought this router a while back and it worked great for a while. Eventually the router started to disconnect me from the internet at random intervals. This is quite frustrating when you're trying to play games and surf the net. I noticed that the router became abnormally hot during use so I placed stuff under it to allow air to flow. It only mildly helped. The wireless had decent range but the lag was pretty bad if the signal wasnt perfect. I eventually replaced it with a linksys router, which works well.

Setup was easy. Like all routers, you should change default password first before connecting to the internet. 5 Star Review   By member gepp0010 - Nov 4, 2004

Strengths: cost, ease of setup, signal strength

From opening the box to having wireless internet access on my laptop, it took a grand total of 30 minutes. I was very very impressed by the ease of setup. The signal strength is great; I've never had it cut out on me. Our house has two stories. No matter where I go, the reception never drops below "good". Most of the time it stays at "Excellent", always at 54.0 Mbps. I am using it right now to type this review. I am by no means an expert, but you have to know a little bit about what you are doing though. The only kink in the setup process was getting my broadband service to recognize the MAC address on the router. I knew that my broadband service would only work with a specific MAC address. So during the setup I chose to clone the MAC address of my home computer. This was the wrong thing to do since my cable modem had already reconfigured itself to the new MAC address as soon as the two were connected. So, I just reset the router and everything worked fine. The antenna is plastic and doesn’t look like it will take too much abuse, but the casing is a little bit better. The router comes with an extra patch network cable, mounting brackets, and small clip-on feet to stand the router up. It also comes with some sort of setup/software CD, but that is not needed (and in my opinion not recommended) for getting the router to work. This is my first wireless broadband router, so I really have nothing to compare it to. That being said, it does exactly what I needed it to do, the setup didn't cost me hours of frustration, and I am getting the $25 rebate from D-Link. I love having the ability to surf the web anywhere I am in the house.

Strengths: Easy setup, Easy configuration via any browser. WLAN, and LAN worked out of the box

Weakness: WAN needed little tweaking.

I've 3 machines. One was connected directly with ethernet cable. One was connected wirelessly with linksys wireless "wpc11" pc card and one was connected with dlink "DWL-520". LAN and WLAN was connected successfully by enabling built-in DHCP Server. But when I tried to share the cable modem from Earthlink, it wouldn't work. Tried so many times. Followed instructions as given in the manual. Didn't work. Finally called 24/7, toll-free tech-support. The Rep. was knowlegable and found the problem in 2 minutes. The problem was cable modem was set to 10 Mbps and router's WAN settings were set to 100 Mbps. Lowering down router's WAN settings to 10 Mbps did the magic. Overall good, except for this tweak. Also, the rep said that if everything works fine, don't upgrade the firmware.

Strengths: Inexpensive, somewhat knowledgeable tech support.

Weakness: Nothing to *really* differentiate this unit from the competition. Mozilla Firefox issues through the WebAdmin, forwarded ports don't forward?!

Most of the units from Linksys, Netgear, D-Link, and Co make are very similar in functionality and features. The truth is that everyone will have differing results with the exact same unit. Some users will have a trouble-free time, others will have non-stop problems, and the rest will be somewhere in-between. Bottom Line for all users looking to purchase any of these bargain routers is to make sure that they purchase it from a store with a lenient return policy. (Read no stocking fees, return shipping, etc) If you experience nothing but perfect results, just go to another manufacturer. With that said, my experience with the DI-524 was about average. Strengths: Small, sleek design. Very configurable. Easy setup.

Weakness: The admin panel has a few minute incompatibility issues with firefox. But that is minor, considering the number of web sites existing today have the same problem. 1.05 firmware is somewhat instable.

Overall, the router works great. Installed the latest 1.05 firmware update, and I am enjoying enhanced features as well as some bug fixes. Great speed and reliability. With the limited-time offered rebates, it is an extremely great buy and I would recommend it to all of my customers for their home networks. Downgraded to the 1.03 firmware version to stop connection issues with wireless.
