K7SF5D7050E version 5 Belkin wireless adapter - buy something else
2 Star Review   By member Misc55122 - Sep 16, 2010

Strengths: works ok when it works

Weakness: drops signal constantly - loses it about 4-5 times in an 8 hour work day

You need to unplug it and plug it back in when it freezes up. Buy something else - this is not worth the time to deal with.

Overall simplicity not part of this product
3 Star Review   By John1977 on Home Depot - Nov 8, 2009

I have used this product on numerous occasions. I would have to recommend the linksys wireless G over this one. It seems to be harder to install the drivers then other manufactures products. And the range at which it effectively picks up wireless signals is far less than the linksys wireless G adapter. The strong point would have to be the price this product is about $15 less than the competitors.

My tempermental green eyed monster
2 Star Review   By member rwscid - Nov 4, 2007

Strengths: When it works, it works OK

Weakness: Getting it to work remains a mystery

I have two of these, on similar computers sitting almost next to each other. One gets a strong signal, the other does not (note: this has no impact on wireless throughput, which is high in both cases). The green LED light on the good one is always on, on the not so good one seldom on. What gives, Belkin? But, when it starts to work, it seems to stay working for a long time. Until I change something, such as my monitor. The monitor? Yes, the monitor. It took about 6 hours after I installed a new monitor for the not so good Belkin antenna to start working correctly. My last, successful, step was to deinstall it and reinstall it. The Belkin software, by the way, is a dictionary definition of el crappo. But the little thing sure is cute, sitting there on top of my CPU. If it weren't for the emotional attachment I have developed, I would crush it under the heel of my jackboot and send the carcass back to Belkin. Grrr...

Dead
4 Star Review

Strengths: Stand with extension.

Weakness: Gets hot, base is not stable enough to stay put.

I had no problems on the installations. I installed the software to my laptop running W98, and desktops to 2000, and XP home. But after 6 months of use the unit went dead and the popup message said USB device malfunction. So I opened it up and found the large main chip had become unsoldered. It was impossbile to resolder it myself due to the contacts are underneath the chip. But overall worked fine for me. So I mailed it back to Belkin and waiting for a new replacement at no cost because it has a lifetime warranty. Yes the unit should of not malfunctioned but I think that happened because my kids swapped it with other PC's and dropped it a couple of times.

Piece of garbage
2 Star Review   By member ldillard05 - Sep 28, 2007

Strengths: Sometimes it works.

Weakness: Disconnects randomly, included software is terrible, weak signal strength, pretty much everything.

You get what you pay for. If I would have known how terrible this product was I would have opted for a more expensive one. I do plan on replacing it and promptly throwing it in the trash. Wouldn't sell this thing to my worst enemy. Do yourself a favor, don't buy it.

Have to agree with the detractors -
1 Star Review

Strengths: Very few

Weakness: Inconsistent, slow connection, frequent drop-outs...you name it: does everything "plug n play" device SHOUDLNT do!

I bought two of these at PC world, as custoner returns as they were a bit cheaper. Two days later, I took them back saying "I know why they were returned, they don't work!!!" and got two brand new replacements. One is still in the wrapping, as I also had a spare "no-name" bargain-bin £12.99 from Maplins usb adaptor which I was going to replace, thinking that althoigh it worked, it couldn't be v good and a "name" like Belkin should be better. Thing is the Maplins no-name connects within 2-3 seconds of being plugged in, locks on, stays on and sustains 36-48 Mbps...I don't think it has EVER dropped out. Now if only I could say the same for THIS puppy... It only works AT ALL in 3 of the 6 USB ports on my machine. In a couple of the others, it never even ges recognised as being inserted, while on some it "bing-bongs" but then XP cant find a driver as it doesnt recognise the device...it is indeed a 60/40 against thing. Having found a port it "likes"...it is very slow to connect, often having to be removed and re-inserted before locking on. It frequently drops to 11mbps and all in all is pretty shoddy. I think the problem here is lack of quality control - if you get a good 'un, good luck, but personally I wouldnt waste my cash on another. PS I have used and still have several other Belkin products that I'm 100% happy with

Ok i got this belkin thing and i installed it and i got the little popup "Now u can plug in your adapter" and i plugged it in, but when windows want to install it wants me to check the internet for the driver. How is that possible? i cant get internet before i install it! Dont buy it, it sucks! i dont want anyone to suffer like i did and when i sent an email to belkin support in hope of that they would help me i got the answer: "I cant help you with this it SHOULD work just fine!" Strengths: Nice and compact.

Weakness: Windows wont recognise it/won't load.

I have 2 of these adaptors. 2 discs. 1 disc downloaded from Belkin. I tried & tried & tried & tried, but to no avail. (Windows XP & Belkin router.... that I also had a lot of trouble with, & had to contact support). 2 days & 1 night, I struggled with this. (I hate to give up). Spent over an hour on the phone with Belkin support. Nothing. I tried it on another computer. Nothing. I borrowed a Netgear card. 5 minutes later, I had a wireless network! I class myself as an average user, but have TOTALLY run out of options. Even Belkins promised return call did not happen.

Typical low-end crap from Belkin
2 Star Review   By member alphawolf009 - Jan 16, 2007

Strengths: Adequate when it feels like working, but it does nothing particularly well. Best feature is the stand and cable allows flexibility in its placement.

Weakness: If you run Windoze XP there is about a 60-40 chance it will work. If you run 2K or older, Linux, UNIX, or Mac OS the odds get much worse.

This adapter is a crap shoot, I've used this on a dozen or more different machines and sometimes they work other times they don't. The bottom line is this is a badly engineered, poorly manufactured POS, that when combined with Belkin's notoriously bad software and utterly helpless technical support, will suck up hours and hours of your life and when/if you do get it to work the performance is lackluster at best. If it works, it installs easily and quickly, if not, you are much better off returning it and buying a quality product. I should also point out that Ms. Alphawolf and I have over 25 years experience as IT professionals and we have dedicated far too much time trying to get this to work consistently.

2 Star Review   By member yananova - Jan 5, 2007

Strengths: They re great when they work

Weakness: Connects when it wants then disconnects

Make sure you get the correct drivers for ur USB stick cos there are different versions and even if you don't seem to find the correct driver, search again its out there somewhere. I had a pci version of the wireless 54G and that card kept on rebooting my pc randomly. I won't buy Belkin anymore.

Wireless Adapter
5 Star Review   By flint on Home Depot - Nov 30, 2006

This is an excellent product for a simple wireless network solution. It was a quick and simple installation using the included software. I was able to quickly expand my home network without expert advice. The price doesn't reflect the value, it does a better job than the more expensive models available.

usb 1.1 vs 2
5 Star Review   By harvey on PageComputer - Oct 22, 2006

Strengths: usb 1.1 is slower

Just a note on why usb 1.1 is slower. 1.1 runs at about 10 mbit/sec and limits the thruput through the usb to the computer to that. Even if the adapter talks to the access point at 54 mbits/sec the usb 1.1 (1.0) speed will limit the actual thruput. Most of the 54mbits will be idle time waiting for the usb.

No good
1 Star Review   By member kevinmwolf - Oct 9, 2006

Strengths: Provided stand

Weakness: No support for WPA2, cannot maintain connections, fails to see active networks

Latest drivers released back in 2004. Does not support WPA2 encyption like most new adapters today. Continues to drop connections and even fails to list networks that are in range on a regular basis. Have had great luck with Belkin in the past (2 routers, 2 bluetooth products, a wireless card) and have had great luck. Like Belkin's matching "G" router (not the G+, or G MIMO lines), these products should be avoided.

not too bad, but probably not the best for the price.
3 Star Review   By member zacharyklein - Sep 22, 2006

Strengths: portable, relatively easy to use, convenient.

Weakness: overheats(?), connections drop, longetivity issues?

I purchased this from a store about 14-15months ago and found it to be easy to install (if you follow the simple instructions: plug it in, install the drivers, and go!)I'm using WinXP+SP2, and have used it under Win2k as well. I have noticed that it gets pretty hot, which might have contributed to connections being dropped and eventually failing on my system. As of today, when I boot up it detects the device, logs me into my wireless router, and works fine for a random interval of time. With no warning, the usb device uninstalls itself and the internet connection drops. It completely disappears from my hardware/device profiles and isn't recognized until it's unplugged and plugged back in. And then, there's no telling how long it'll work, which has been anywhere from 30seconds to 3hours... It's very frustrating, but the tech support people so far have seemed eager to assist me in rectifying the situation. I'm actually talking to tech support now, and after 52minutes I'm almost no farther than where I started because of hold times.

2 Star Review

Strengths: works, easy to set up.

Weakness: it broke and now the connection between it and my usb keeps connection and disconnecting.

Its great if all your going to do is throw it away in a couple of months. It doesn't work well with laptops (it sticks out ALOT). Comes with a cap that fits on it and gets lost easly.

DO NOT BUY THIS THING
1 Star Review

Weakness: Everything. The base doesn't sit flat. The extension cable i recieved had a short in it. The thing blocks two other USB ports other then the one it occupies, and it drops the connecton... a lot.

This thing is total trash I bought it thinking I could save $10. Wasted that much in gas taking it back to the store. Works better in linux then windows, but that isn't what I bought it for,

BELKIN F5D7050 Wireless 802.11g USB Network Adapter
1 Star Review   By member thq044e - Aug 17, 2006

Strengths: I'm still looking for some

Weakness: It doesn't like Windows xp and Windows xp doesn't like it

I've tried it on xp Home Edition - 2 different computers, one more modern than the other but both from the last 3 years. What has been written in countless reviews I've read happens to us. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes we need to re-boot, sometimes not. Sometimes it won't work whatever we do. Reading the Media hype, it appears that Microsoft endorse this product; can't understand why (The Logo has not been verified; but that is the same for other USB connectors.) My advice: Avoid this product, unless you want to spend loads of time trying to get connection, as part of your patience-learning process in the face of near impossibility. My advice - if you want USB, buy one from Linksys (for quality) or a D-Link (for ease). (We have a D-link USB and a Linksys router. The problem with Linksys is the router and their server, not wireless cards, etc.) John O

Died within 6 months
1 Star Review   By member navmys - Apr 30, 2006

Strengths: None.

Weakness: Stopped working within 6 months; Kept dropping connections;

When we first got it we had problems with the connection. Thought it was the PC, so we tried the laptop and it was the same issue. We lived with it until it completely stopped working. Contacted Belkin and they did not even respond.

Big Little
2 Star Review   By member tomcotom - Apr 23, 2006

Strengths: Easy to install

Weakness: 400 feet line of sight = less then 50 feet with walls

Buyer beware, manufactures are using feet, line of sight? Do not buy any wireless under 1000 feet for home use. Compare price by this standard of feet. The USB is an easy product to install.

Great Buy - Convenient Portability of Wireless for under $40
4 Star Review

Strengths: Price, setup, solid

Weakness: cheaply made

At first I was skeptical, but I figured for $35 it was worth a try. It really works quite well! I have this setup on my desktop and unplug it from the dock and take it with me when traveling. Not sure why people are having issues with the range because compared to the company laptop, this thing picks up tons. I *thought* there were no other wireless networks in my area. I plugged this in and stood it on my tower. Two other networks popped up in addition to my own. Setup was a snap - I'm not sure why other people were having issues with installing it. They might have installed the 98 drivers by mistake? Not sure, but it installed flawlessly. I don't use the actual management software it uses, I prefer the built-in software provided by Windows XP. I had a linksys "B" wireless card in my machine . . . this replaces it, and I'm glad I made the purchase. The only downside is I don't see this being used in a rough environment as the stand is easily breakable plastic and the adapter itself feels like if you drop it from five feet you might be out of luck. If you aren't accident-prone though, then go for it!

No Media Center support!
2 Star Review   By member needmoreo2 - Jan 7, 2006

Strengths: Works fine with XP & 2000

Weakness: Doesn't work at all on Media Center XP

I've used the 54G USB adapter for a few months. It is easy to install and use EXCEPT when on Media Center XP. Belkin has not released a driver for the Media Center and the XP driver doesn't work.

USB 2.0 ONLY
2 Star Review

Strengths: Compact design, comes with extension cable

Weakness: Works only on USB 2.0 ports

This device is handy but will not operate on USB 1.1 ports. It will appear as "unrecognized" no matter what you do. I had to install a USB 2.0 card for this decive to work making it more expensive for an old computer than having purchsing a USB 1.1 compliant device.

Great USB Adapter
5 Star Review   By member purplecat - Dec 9, 2005

Strengths: 54mbps connection and ease to setup on Win XP. Connections stays well. Backward compatible with USB 1.0 and 1.1.

Weakness: a little problem after rebooting first time. But 2nd and 3rd reboot it worked just fine. (just for testing)

This card is great and I am using it on the old Gateway Performace 600 (600mhz w/ 256mb ram running on Win XP Pro SP2). Although it have USB 1.1 ports, the instruction state that it will limit speed to 11 mpbs on USB 1.1. That's bull!! (It was at first when I had minor problem until I configured the Belkin USB network connection and Belkin router on WEP issue and it changed speed to 54mbps). I got 54mbps on USB 1.1 port!!? When I boot up to desktop, I plugged the Belkin USB adapter, the "balloon" window popped and saying that best to use USB 2.0 for faster connection. Nah I don't believe that. I try it on my new system and it work like a charm. Not much difference to old system. Don't buy Belkin PCI wireless adapter. they're problemic!. (belkin F5D700 v3001). I had no problem setting up and use it. But it tend to cut off connection fequently. It had to do with the heat problem with the card. My friend had exact same problem. The Belkin USB wireless stick really worth it! IT got a good strong connection!

Works great
5 Star Review

Strengths: Easy to install, fits in tight places, can be moved around for better reception, good range.

I needed a device I could use when working on computers with no network connections so I could access my network. Once the software is installed... just stick it in and it finds the network. I can unplug it and stow it away for future use. My first use was on a Windows ME machine using usb 1.0 and worked flawlessly. I will be recommending this to customers that want a easy wireless solution.

Very good adapter that won't work with a ZoneAlarm Security Suite.
4 Star Review

Strengths: Easy to install, works as advertised.

Weakness: Blocks access to a nearby USB port, doesn't work with ZoneAlarm Security Suite

If you don't mind having two USB ports occupied with this adapter and don't plan on installing Zone Labs software then I would definitelly recomend this network adapter. Using this adapter and trying to install ZoneAlarm Security Suite has always crasched my system after it loaded (blue screen of death).

5 Star Review   By member pinny - Oct 13, 2005

Strengths: has an extension usb cable which helps fit in very close usb sockets. maintains a very high transfer rate with no disruptions.

i too have no idea why old tom wrote that review. i would make sure the product was defected before i write a bad review. i actualy have a netgear wg111 usb adapter, and it has been nothing but truble, it's bulky, doesn't fit among several close usb sockets, and the signal goes in and out all the time. good luck to you shoppers pinny

5 Star Review   By member vtvanda - Feb 8, 2005

Strengths: Zero problems with setup.

I have no clue what Tom in the other review is talking about. Product set up very easily, range was fantastic. I talked with their customer support department, where I was on hold for a very short period of time and they were super helpful with getting it to work with my Tivo. Great product.

1 Star Review   By member Breemania - Aug 5, 2004

Strengths: 0 None!! POS!!

Weakness: Windows XP in Networking does not recognize this wireless G Usb adapter.

This wireless G Usb adapter is not recognized by Windows XP in Networking. When you load the software, it looks cool and even talks too you. Then it loads up fine recognizes, finds other networks but wont connect. What Gives right? Well, look in Control Panel and then networking this wireless device cannot be found and I tried everything! I am a computer Networker! Load and unloaded software and tons of other tricks! No luck. I thought I would take a gamble and try it. I should have stayed with what I know. Cisco, Linksys, and D-Link make the best cards. Make sure to go with wireless G with speed booster. DO NOT BUY THIS!! EVEN IF ITS TWO BUCKS!! Back it went, for the Linksys G with speed booster, this is a great card. Thanks. Sincerely, Tom
