Decent UPS
4 Star Review   By member d_esmond - Oct 15, 2007

Strengths: Display, compact size, recognized in OS as ACPI battery

Weakness: Not much backup time, backlight not defeatable, alarm can be turned off but procedure is complicated.

This is the coolest-looking UPS on the market... with the blue backlit display on the front. The information displayed isn't really that useful but fun for techies to keep an eye on the state of the AC input. It's also a nice compact size, and can orient vertically or horizontally depending on your needs (the display can be flipped accordingly). As another reviewer mentioned, it doesn't allow for a bunch of power bricks, but that's more just a symptom of the small size of the unit. Another symptom of the small size is that there's just not that much battery in there. the 1000VA rating sounds like a lot but this UPS is really only average in terms of backup time. However, even with a large screen LCD and dual core PC you still get at least 5-10 minutes--which covers most power outages and at the least gives your PC time to shut itself down or hibernate. As everyone else has mentioned, that fantastic blue display is also extremely bright and cannot be turned off. Not a good UPS for a bedroom or next to your TV where the light will be annoying. Mine is under my desk so I don't see it unless I'm trying to. Also, I found a post on amazon that explains how to disable the alarm, but it's complicated and requires installing Tripp Lite's crappy software. The best thing about this UPS (and most other modern ones) is that the OS treats it natively like it would a laptop battery. So you don't need to install anything, and the OS will be able to keep tabs on the battery levels and will take the proper actions as necessary. Overall, a great UPS which has worked very well the last few months and hopefully will continue to do so for many years (the batteries are easily replaced).

Solid UPS with blue LCD in the front and a bit difficult to set up software
4 Star Review   By member pasu - Aug 28, 2007

Strengths: Solid performance, look professional, useful battery and watts info display, software to shutdown and other functions

Weakness: Too annoying alarm whenever it is on battery, outlets are pretty close to each others, download software, software is not very easy to setup

This Tripp-Lite perform quite well with large visible LCD in the front. So far I had about 4 times power disruption, and it performed well to be on battery and shut down the system. However, the very loud alarm is annoying in that it would not stop unless the button was manually pushed. I believe you can set off the alarm, but it doesn't have the option to alarm only certain times. The software needs to be downloaded and require to install .net-- I hate it. APC has more useful software I think. The software can be configured in either home or business. The business has a lot more options, yet it doesn't fully explained certain activities very clearly. It also has very annoying configuration. For instance, under "events", you have to manually fill your contact notification everytime each event occurs although you just did setup your contact. There are so many redundant click to get some setting done -- in this department, APC software is a lot easier. Finally, when I was on battery, I didn't get any notifications via my email as I supposed to.

Superb Product
4 Star Review   By member tabriswoo - Jul 26, 2007

Strengths: 1000VA, strong power for home and entertainment units.

Weakness: I still don't know how to turn that blue screen back light off. It is in my bedroom and it just sometimes annoys me with that backlight. I might just find somethign to cover it up.

It does its job right. I should try it sometime by pulling the plug and see how it perform. If you have a vista, do not connect it to the computer at first. Update its latest firmware before doing so. (Well they should stick that label on top of the UPS) Overall it is a nice product.

A notch above the entry level units
4 Star Review   By member kgivens - Jul 21, 2007

Strengths: Adequate backup for most home PCs, has voltage regulation

Weakness: LCD is cool, but may be useless/invisible depending on where you position the device

Usually you don't get voltage regulation/power "cleaning" on low-end UPS units. I got the SmartPro for around eighty bucks or so, and was pleasantly surprised to see AVR mentioned on the box. Provides something in the neighborhood of 500 watts of battery support (max), but don't think you're going to run your PC for 20 minutes on the UPS alone---if this thing kicks in, you should be thinking about shutting down in 5 minutes or less. And if you have a lot of peripherals---and especially power-gobbling devices like laser printers---think about running a second UPS for some of those.

A good UPS for the dollar.
4 Star Review   By member geo442 - Jun 26, 2007

Strengths: Size, clear display, very good hardware functionality, Tripp-Lite customer service.

Weakness: Windows 32-bit software is very wonky, turning the unit on and off feels a little counterintuitive.

I needed to update my all of my old UPSs (Belkin Enterprise models that were out of their battery's prime). With the sale that Tech Depot had on these last week, it became more cost-effective to buy these new units than to buy replacement batteries for the Belkins. I have been using the Tripp-Lites for a week or so now, and my experiences with them have been very good. I had an issue with one machine (for some reason the Tripp-Lite Windown software could not find the java installation on that computer), but the customer servie was both polite and effective. I wish the softeware was a little "cleaner", but oce it got up and running it's been funning flawlessly. Overall I'd highly recommed this model -- it's about perfect bang-for-the-dollar-wise for protecting a middle-range new computer or HDD-containing electronics (like a DVR, Xbox360, or PS3).

I got this UPS based on 2 things, looks and 1000va rating. While the look is great with my home theater setting, I would have liked a little more beef when it comes to actual backup time. It is adequate for shutting down my LCD tv safely, but you don't have much time. Overall OK, but not mind blowing good

4 Star Review   By member WhoBeDaPlaya - Jun 19, 2007

Strengths: Nice status display, high power rating, fairly compact, USB connection, 75ohm coax in/out jacks.

Weakness: Relatively small 12V battery amp-hour rating compared to some lower VA rated UPSes.

A nicely styled unit with a neat status display and high power rating. Unlike cheaper units, it does not take the cop out of using its battery to perform voltage regulation, which should reduce the strain on the battery. The status display is very useful though as with all blue LED backlit screens (which seem to be the current fad) it is way too bright.

Great Device... wish i bought two!
4 Star Review   By member latintechie - Jun 14, 2007

Strengths: I have this unit set up on the TV in my bedroom. The product is great, tell me exactly what I need to know. It does run a little warmer than a usual UPS but not much hotter.

Weakness: My biggest complaint is that since I have it set up in my bedroom and the blue screen is very bright and there is no way to dim or turn just the screen off. Other than that, the UPS works great.

This product works very well and enables you to work through brownouts and blackouts, but it has one major nuisance: Every time the backup battery is activated, an audible alarm goes off and repeats every 5-10 seconds. The only way to disable it is to manually press the mute button each time the power goes out. If you have 2-3 of these around the house and you're in the middle of a storm, you're likely to go nuts running around the house muting the alarm all the time.

So Far So Good
5 Star Review   By member jsav88 - Mar 9, 2006

Strengths: Display is neat and the avr is not totally battery reliant. It can actually regulate as opposed to just switching to battery.

Weakness: Transformer bricks kill the battery protected outlets space.

I've heard it click on and off a few times and did not have any interuption. I haven't tried it's run time yet but it should do fine with 1000VA rating. Might add seperate strip for bricks that need battery.
