Klipsch 5.1 Promedia Ultra
4 Star Review   By member dergani - Jun 21, 2008

Strengths: Great Bass, lots of power output, not much if any distortion and high volume levels

Weakness: AMP!!

This is the second Klipsch Promedia Amp that has blown on me. The first was a promedia 5.1 that I called klipsch and they gave me a new PM ultra 5.1 because they had extended the warranty. This replacement lasted me a couple years of moderate use before blowing again. Klipsch convinced me to buy a new control unit to see if that was the problem (against my better judgement) and of course that wasnt the problem. So I had to return that for a refund. The tech support guy claimed that "amps rarely fail" which we all know from reading isnt the case. They said it was a 2 month turn around (which I told them if it never happened why is there such a long turnaround, you should have parts and not be busy) the tech said they were "out of parts" (funny if you aren't using them) I hooked up with some guy who repairs and upgrades them and he fixed them better than klipsch and they work great now

Top Notch Sound System
5 Star Review   By member patrick_wolf - Jan 14, 2006

Strengths: Everything! Outstanding bass; from both the satellites and the sub. Superb sound quality all around.

Weakness: When adjusting the main volume knob, it occasionaly skips up or down a few notches. This is hardly worth mentioning though.

I'm using these with a SB Audigy sound card. I've been using these speakers for a little over 3 years now and they still sound amazing, that's durability. I highly recommend using these with some sort of sound card, on-board is just not good enough for any system. They are a bit pricey, but for good reason! These were $400 when I bought them. Now they have the ProMedia 5.1 Ultra which is less expensive than that. I bought them in conjuctin with my new Alienware system. I remember shortly after I bought them there was a problem with the speakers and I had to get them replaced. I can't remember what the problem was. But since they have been replaced they've been incredible. (Read chibo's review for more info) This my was very first speaker system I've bought. My cousin had these and after I heard them I knew I wanted them. There's not much more to say, this speaker system is top notch, although now I'd go for the ProMedia 5.1 Ultra, seeing as their the upgraded version.

Kick butt system was the basis for replacing my entire entertainment system.
5 Star Review   By member megabita - Dec 16, 2005

Strengths: Killer sound, no distortion, beat out and replaced my $800 Onkyo Amp and Bose surround sound system.

Weakness: None.

I replaced my 42" Sony projection TV, Onkyo AMP and Bose Surrond Sound System with a 40" LCD HD TV as a HD monitor, a custom built PC as controller with an ATI All-In-1 1800 card, a SoundBlaster 5.1 and these incredible Klipsch speakers. I can play games, watch DVD's in HD, TV and Sat in HD, and enjoy my collection of music video's, 1100 mp3 albums, 5200+ singles on a system that hands down, outperforms a professional home entertainment system. I am back to the banging on the door from the neighbor to TURN IT DOWN. The neighbors house is 30' away. These things make the earth shake. Impressed... Duh! There is no better a system than Klipsch. None, nowhere! Bye Bye Bose!!!

1 Star Review   By member dmjseller - Nov 17, 2003

Strengths: Wonderful sound quality, when they work

Weakness: The amp blew after just one week of actual use!

First, let me say that I compared the sound of all the top-end PC speakers - Klipsch, Logitech, Creative Soundworks, and the Klipsch 5.1s won out basedon their crisp, clear sound and earthshaking subwoofer. And I still stand by that assessment. The problem however, is that that amp in the subwoofer blew it's gasket after less then one week of actual use. Tried to turn on the speakers using the remote volume adjustment module and I heard a scratching sound for a split second and what surely sounded like a small explosion coming from the subwoofer. That was it - the system was done and finished. I hooked up the headphones to the remote module headphone jack and I heard music/sound coming through, so that ruled out anything wrong with the sound card (Audigy 2 ZS). It had to be speaker - specifically the subwoofer. Just contacted Klipsch this morning and they issued me a RMA. Since the speaker box the system arrived in is so big and heavy, I requested a prepaid shipping label, which Klipsch has sent in the mail. I will post a review after this is all sorted out. But for now, I give it a "poor" rating. They sound absolutely great when they are working, but one week is just pathetic. If your ears can't tell the difference in sound with the different brands, I would recommend the Logitech Z680s - nice sound, lots of features. But comparing the two my ears prefer the Klipsch, so I am going to go through the hassle of warranty replacement rather than a return.

Strengths: Awesome bass, awesome sound

Weakness: Defective faulty design

I have had my speakers for 15 months since near when they first came out and today I finally experienced the amp problem everyone else is talking about, I reinstalled all the drivers and nothing helped. So I gave Klipsch a call guessing of the worst (past 1 year warranty)....What did they tell me? They extended the warranty on all the 5.1's by 2 years and on top of that were going to replace my system with the new 5.1 ultra promedia. In my opinion that is going beyond the call of duty by giving me their new top of the line system. For all the whiners who didn't buy the speakers at an authorized dealer, that is your fault for trying to save a few bucks. Maybe next time you will buy your parts from an authorized dealer like newegg, bestbuy or circuit.

Strengths: Sound great when working. Enjoyed playing my computer games. The sound was great and made my games more enjoying to play.

Weakness: Poor eclectronic design.

I knew Klipch were high quailty speakers. I was very impressed with the sound. Easy setup, rich sound, nice design on sat speakers. Now they don't work. Muffed sound through the sub speaker. Turn the power off for ten minutes and turn them on and would work for 20 minutes then back to the muffed sounds through the sub speaker. I can't afford to buy another set. I always belived, you get what you pay for! A $400.00 mistake! You would think a company would stand by their products when a problem arises and fix the problem and make their customers happy. Instead, they go by how many they can sell. This is very poor business and they will lose many customers. Without us the costumer, their nothing!

Strengths: Rich bass and mid-tones.

Weakness: Good highs, but not perfect like their bass and mid-tones.

Overall, it is argueably the best PC speaker system available on the planet. Most definitely. They continue to improve on each new version. I hope that trend continues, because they are excellent speakers. They have everything you need. They should start putting version numbers into the product names - each new one does improve upon their elder siblings.

Strengths: GREAT sound, nice bass and all around the best speakers i've purchased. awesome customer service!!

Weakness: if you bought before may 2003 then you need to call for an rma or ra and get them replaced.

i've had these speakers since may 2002 and all i have to say is they are worth every penny. although the speakers died, i called customer service and was on hold for no more than 3 minutes, i explained that all i hear now is a muffled bass sound and the customer service rep said "ahh thats because of the defective board inside, i can get them replaced, where did you purchase them, how long ago, and we are extending the warranty on those an additional 2 years". she even sent me the tracking number and all, needless to say i am very impressed with the mfg's customer service and will continue to purchase Klipsch products.

Strengths: Sounds good, large sub, headphone jack on volume control

Weakness: stopped working after 16 months, what a waste of money.

Would not buy again. 1 year warrenty is convient for them as it stopped working after that. Sound never that loud to begin with, no digital interface, substandard wiring.I can hear only from sub, not satalite speakers.

Strengths: Tight bass, great controls, easy setup and the sound is spectacular across the board !!!!!!!! Games, Music, Movies, They are perfect!! Spend the money and get these!!!

Weakness: Not a damn one.

I have read several reviews that have complained about the Klipsch 5.1 and the Logitech Z-680. I listened to a set of the Logitechs at the local Best Buy. They sounded great with the games that they had but reproducing music was horrible! 3" cones for satellites and a sub that hits too hard (if my opinion is worth anything) make for a sloppy $400 package. Now, after I read all of the reviews on the Klipsch (blown transistors, resistors, and what ever else), I called Klipsch up several times to see what kind of answer that I would get from different reps on the phone. They all explained to me that the problem had been indentified and corrected. The said that any that was made after 5-1-03 were up to date units and that they should work fine. They also said that they are giving an extra year warranty on them just in case something goes wrong. Now for the important part. Call them up and make sure that the place that you are purchasing them from is on their "approved list" of retailers or the warranty is void I bought mine from Newegg for $360 shipped. They arrived in 3 days and are absolutely the best computer speaker that I have ever heard.

Strengths: These tiny speakers are better than the ones on my larger stereo system. Great Subwoofer, can get very loud w/o distortion.

Weakness: Price a little too high, no digital inputs

When I bought these speakers, I was not completely convinced that I should buy them for the price they were. Now that I have them, I have never regretted the decision. These speakers have the best sound quality availible, and come with the guarantee that they will be good just by being made by Klipsch. With them, I can tell the difference between MP3's and CD's, so now I actually have a need fo the discs. I completely reccomend these speakers, if you want the best 5.1 system around.

Strengths: The speaker system gives quality sounds and the shape is great as well.

Weakness: The amplifier is easy to break. Poor customer service...

Overall, the speaker's quality is decent, but the customer service is poor and needs to change the attitude. I once had a problem with the amplifier and sent it back to the return department to replace it after I got an RA number. It took a MONTH AND HALF to get a replacement.

Strengths: Great sound, high power, overall good looks, convenient stand-alone control tower.

Weakness: Size of satellites and sub may make proper placement difficult for those with limited space, mid-range glare a bit pronounced during music playback, price is unjustifiable to anyone on a budget.

All told, these are aguably the best PC speakers currently available. For someone who wants to spend a hundred or so less and wants slightly better audio when playing music, Creative Labs Megaworks is probably a better buy. Having said that, the Klipsh 5.1 package is overall the best you can get--particularly for gaming and DVD playback. Incidentally, for those considering purchasing Klipsch's 4.1 over their 5.1 system beware: the sound isn't as good and the way they're wired greatly diminishes the overall quality of the whole system. If you are crazy enough spend $200 or more on PC speakers you might as well go all the way and get the 5.1s. Excellent. An almost perfect 4 and 3/4 stars out of five.

Strengths: Sounds great when they work.

Weakness: I have sent them back a total of 3 times and end up having the same problem over and over. They tell me it is a transistor that is bad and that they finally fixed it. I'm now waiting for a RA # again!

I can't get a refund on these speakers from Klipsch. I ordered them directly from the website. I'm now sending them back again for the 4th time!!! Each time it is supposed to be a transistor that is broken and they say that the problem is fixed everytime. I get nothing but muffled sound. Then first time it happened they told me it was my sound card and had me restore my computer. They have spent more time in shippping than connected to my computer...What a waste of money...but hey they sound great WHEN they work for a while!!!

Strengths: Great sound

Weakness: control pod jumps around in volume....speakers now don't work!

For a little more than a year I thought I had the best speakers in the world. Now they're sh*t! The satellite speakers are not working, and only a muffled sound comes from the bass module. I think I was lucky to enjoy this product for as long as I did after reading some of the other reviews. DO NOT BUY KLIPSCH PROMEDIA 5.1s. For 400 dollars you can get something else, maybe not as good, but will definetly last longer.

Strengths: Awsome sounds (esp when having a good sound card such as Creative's Audigy class) Decent Bass.

Weakness: the AMP inside the subwoofer that controls all other sat-speakers is VERY VERY easy to break. you cannot do anything about it to protect it, it just breaks after a while.

over all, very nice speaker system, good bass, awsome to DVD and games.but the quality of is a pain, the AMP inside the sub is very easy to break; mine is just about 3 months old.I got it last Nov as a birthday and enter Medical school gift for myself.its ONLY THREE MONTH !!!please read the official forum on their official website (www.klipsch.com) you will read a lot about it. and there was someone replaced FIVE times already so, beware! Klipsch will NOT replace them if you got it from some stores that are not their "approved". so, if you really want it ( are you sure ?) try to spend more bucks from those "approved" stores. or just go to Compusa and get it. mine is broken down, and they will NOT replace it so ...i will just yard sell it and get Creative's megawork 510D. at least Creative's have a longer life and better built quality.

Strengths: Few. Sound ok but not for the price you're paying

Weakness: They won't honor warranty if purchased from someone not on their "approved" vendor list

Purchased expecting the top in audio performance. Reality is that they're regular speakers that play a little louder. No rich tones, no clarity, just volume and base. I purchased mine from Megamax and experienced the flaw that's been written about. Klipsch acknowledged that they had a flaw but wouldn't replace my speakers since Megamax wasn't on their "approved" vendor list. Shouldn't be my responsibility to check out each vendor I purchase from to see if the manufacturer is "approved". Don't buy these speakers!

Strengths: Great subwoofer-a real monster,made with two 8-inch dynamics,with 200watts.Very 1337 design,good control unit

Weakness: Satellites arent quite as good as Megaworks550's.The middle range frequencies are too loud, dominate all others and make sound a little too piersing.

Until the last month,ProMedia 5.1 & MegaWorks510D were two best available multimedia speaker systems, each one better than the other in some ways a little. Now,when Cambridge(Creative) have released MegaWorks550,pro media is significantly behind...especially considering the difference in price (about $80).

Strengths: Great looking, best sound ever, great packaging, everything is included, easy hookup, super loud with no distortion, very high quality

Weakness: Nothing

These are the best computer speakers I have ever owned. I could not be happier with them. These are the highest quality computer speakers I have ever seen.

Strengths: The BEST sounding 5.1 computer speakers (period)

Weakness: * No Remote Control * $400 List Price * Extensive Setup

These speakers sound so good. If you don't own them you should. If I were you, I would. Wow, these speakers are the best PC speakers. I haven't even heard any other speakers that are close. Check them out at Best Buy if you need to preview their excellence.

Strengths: Detail, Sound stage, Power, Punch and Overall Performance

Weakness: None that I can find

My first impression after just the few minutes of James Taylors Line em up was, Holy Crap.. This system is truly unbelievable. I am running the Klipsch 5.1 system from my Toshiba Satellite 5005-S507 laptop and through the Creative Extigy 5.1 Dobly Digital external sound card. This is truly one outstanding speaker system. Distortion is non exsistent, even a loud listening levels. Kudos to Klipsch for developing a first rate 5.1 speaker system for computers.

Strengths: Vary clear highs and wall shaking Bass.

Weakness: Control Pod problems and a burning smell coming from the Sub Box.

I purchased a set of Pro Media 5.1 speakers from Best Buy a couple of months ago and they sound great. BUT after playing music for awhile that have a lot of bass, a burning smell starts to come out of the subwoofer box . Not only that the volume knob on the control pod when turned the volume jumps from 5-10 db levels, according to the manual it is supposed to go 1 db at time. I toke the set back and got a second pair and test them out and guess what? Same problems as before. I called Klipsch and told them the problem I am having, they told my that it the burning smell might be caused by a faulty power strip. So I connected it to another strip and the smell went away for awhile and came back this week. Now for the other problem, according to Kilpsch they have been getting calls about the control pod and from what I been told it was due to the packaging design that left the pod vulnerable. They have redesign there packaging for the 5.1 speakers since I called to eliminate the problem. I am going to take these back to Best Buy and get my 3rd and LAST set, and if I am still having the same problems then I would have to look for some other speaker system besides Klipsch.

Strengths: Awesome power

Weakness: none, honest to God!

These are the best computer speakers you could ever buy. It is hard to get them to distort and you can get the police called on you. (not that I have)! The control module (something the 4.1 model does not have) is a nice way to control the sub, rear, center speakers as well as control the volume level. This module also has 2 jacks. One for headphones and one is an input jack for a mp3 player or cassette player, etc. 500 watts of the best sound I thought only a home stereo good deliver. Yeah, at $400.00 they are pricey, but if mine died tomorrow, I would get another set of Klipsch ProMedia 5.1. Simply awesome!

Strengths: None - do not buy these speakers.

Weakness: Major design flaw - speakers quit working.

I owned a set of ProMedia V2.400 (the precursor to the ProMedia V4.1) and they were the best set of speakers I had ever owned. Breathlessly awaited the release of the ProMedia 5.1 (500 watts!) and got my FIRST set a few days after they were released. After three days the satellites began buzzing incessantly and any sounds played were distorted. Returned to Klipsch for a replacement... The SECOND set arrived about a month later. The RMA department said the first release had a design flaw and it was corrected - hence the long wait. The buzzing in the satellites reappeared the NEXT DAY. I again returned the speakers to Klipsch for a replacement... The THIRD set arrived about a week later. These ones worked OK for about 4 months. I noticed they were quieter than the previous sets but at least I could hear sounds. I turned them up a bit last Monday - suddenly the satellites stopped working and the only thing I could hear was the subwoofer. Returned the speakers to Klipsch and asked for a refund... Since then I've read some complaints from Klipsch owners (both ProMedia 4.1 and 5.1 owners) and many of them experienced the same problems I did. It looks like there is some sort of problem with the amplifiers that causes them to overheat easily. I normally don't listen to sound very loud - that's why I was surprised I had any issues with the speakers. After reading some reviews I decided to purchase some Logitech Z560s.

Strengths: Awesome bass and the satellites sound great for both games and music.

Weakness: I'm just waiting for 6.1 support in their next product

I waited for a long time after almost purchasing the Promedias 4.1 but since I watch a lot of dvds at my desk, I wanted to see if Klipsch would make a 5.1 system and so it paid off. I would've liked an optional surround decoder for both DTS ES and Dolby Digital EX, maybe with the 6.1 system, Klipsch will offer that.

Strengths: Unsurpassed BASS Performance, Superior Satellites, TRUE 500 watt System.

Weakness: The BASS gives me a headache. OKAY! thats not a WEAKNESS =)

The Klipsch ProMedia 5.1 Speakers just sounds SOO GOOD!! or maybe too good!!=) These speakers reproduce songs how they were meant to be heard. Also, the ProMedia 5.1 Subwoofer is just excellent!!! I played songs from instrumental music to heavy bass songs and they sounded different from my previous ProMedia 4.1 Speakers. The ProMedia 5.1 Speakers are very very recommended for games, DVD, MUSIC...ANYTHING! and one last thing. You should buy the AUDIO TORNADO 5.1 for these speakers!!! because you'll be able to enable DIGITAL signals and what else?! the Audio Tornado 5.1 can be connected to your Playstation 2 or XBOX! as long as it has a DIGITAL out CONNECTION other then that the PROMEDIA 5.1 Speakers are just FLAT-OUT better then any PC 5.1 speakers I've heard PERIOD! =)

Strengths: Awsome sound, control tower is very cool

Weakness: Control tower's main volume a bit touchy

Oh man, these things sound amazing. Volume goes up to 80, but anything over about 55 is just too loud to stand in games and music :) Nice thing is that they sound just as amazing at the low levels as they do at blow-out-the-windows loud. Only weakness is that the volume knob occasionally jumps 10 or so db instead of 1 per click... doesn't happen very often though, just weird.

Strengths: very strong bass responce, quick transient and clear mids and highs

This is by far the loudest, most accurate computer speaker system I have ever heard. The bass responce is thunderous, deep, tight, and sonicly accurate. The midrange and high frequency are crystal clear at all volume levels, they have excellent transient responce (acceleration). There is never any harshness to the highs that is associated with many horn tweeters. I am been trying to find a type of music or a song that they can't play and I think it is hopeless I have played everything from Classical to Heavy metal to Bass CDs and they all sound as good as my Car stereo and Home Theater System which are both comprized of award winning components. I give this set of speakers my highest recommendation. I would even recommend using them as a home theater speaker set (living room) as they sound as good as my: 8" towers with matched center and rear speaker and 2 12" powered subs (all JBL). If I could change anything about this speaker system the only thing I could add would be a remote control for volume/fade/balance/sub/mid/high.
