Photosmart Premium C309A
0.5 Star Review  productwiki.com - Mar 25, 2010

The HP Photosmart Premium C309 is a printer that can print, copy, scan, fax and print from CDs or DVDs. It has automatic duplex printing and provides the consumer with a 2.4-inch color LCD to manage the minute details of the printer. It supports several different types of memory cards including CompactFlash, Secure digital/MultimediaCard, Secure Digital High Capacity card, xD-Picture Card, Memory Stick and Memory Stick Duo. It has a flatbed and ADF scanner with a optical resolution of up to 4800 dpi and an enhanced resolution of 19200 dpi. Copy scaling goes from 25 to 400%. The HP Photosmart Premium C309 has a decent incoming fax memory of up to 90 pages at a time, a fax transmission speed of 3 seconds per page and a fax resolution of up to 300 x 300 dpi. Features Print, copy, scan, fax, and print from CD/DVD Black print speed: up to 33 ... PROS: (1) Does good photos. ... CONS: (1) Takes too long (>30s) and wastes ink every time is starts and stops. Its infuriating. (2) The scanner lid cannot take thicker objects and the lid lacks a soft backboard (white) its just flat plastic. (3) After a little bit of use the printer is in a constant state of ink low. Starts warning when cartridge is half used and at least one is at any given time. (4) Lack of detailed information in setup and web interface. Settings are split into settings and setup. (5) Not recommend for business users. It will drive you crazy.

Not a good choice
1 Star Review

Weakness: It s not user frindley set up and performance very difficult and poor.

I can not get this machine to print wirelessly it has been turned off over night and still continues to print an item I ask it to print last night. I wish I had not purchased it on Ebay.

Not many problems
4 Star Review

Strengths: Excellent pictures. Does a fine job of printing, scanning and faxing. Is especially good on DVD or CD label prints.

Weakness: Don't bother if you are going to use this as a wireless printer. It doesn't handle through the air data too well. In order to keep from using a lot of ink you need to leave it on 27/7.

Before you call this printer a piece of junk you need to download the latest drivers and the latest versions of the software. I am more than satisfied.

Terrible product
1 Star Review   By member imachin - Oct 24, 2010

Weakness: Extremely low quality in almost everything. Poorly engineered and poor mechanical quality.

As soon as I bought the product, it became evident that it couldn't scan documents at all. I had to do some intense research and download a special fix from the the HP site to make this basic feature work. I wonders if HP has a quality control in the printer department or if they just throw out these products as-is, hoping to fix issues as the customers start complaining. Second - even though the product is wireless-enabled, it is impossible to print from more than one computer in your house. I tried many times to set this up, but gave up (and I am an IT guy!) Third - the latest issue is that form feed just doesn't work anymore - it jams the paper regularly. I tried to see if there are any obstructions or similar, but everything seems OK. It's just the form feed mechanism that doesn work properly and "chews" the paper regularly. Conclusion - stay away from this (premium!) product and from HP products in generel. HP used to be a company producing high quality innovative products under their original founders (Hewlett and Packard) but a series of greedy management teams fucused on outsourcing engineering and production to low-wage / low-quality third world countries making Wall Street happy (and lining their pockets with fat bonuses) but essentially ruining the company. It is already my third negative experience with HP products, so it's a rule, not a happenstance. I will never buy an HP product again.

Some unknown drawbacks
3 Star Review   By kagnew on HP - Sep 28, 2010

Overall this printer does an excellent job of printing both text and photos. I really like the automatic two sided printing. One drawback this printer has that can't be found in the manuals or anyplace else is printing labels. When printing to a writable CD/DVD the only software a person can use is Photosmart Essential 3.5. One can also download a free Roxio Express Labeler that is suppose to work also. All other label maker software is not compatible with this printer. The same goes for most other labels you may need to print such as mailing labels. I was told by tech support that again the only software they recommend using for labels and the only software that is compatible with this printer is the Roxio software. To me this is quite disappointing. I have owned many HP printers and this is really the first time I have been disappointed that it is not compatible with all software.

Best Gift Ever
5 Star Review   By BookMommy on HP - Sep 28, 2010

I love my new C309a printer! There is nothing that I have wanted to do but can't on this all in one. It has replaced my laser jet, ink jet, fax machine, copy machine, and scanner in my small business office. I have been able to use it for my kids' homeschool tasks, quick prints, turning single sided documents into a 2 page document. It's GREAT!!! I have recommended this printer to many!! About the only thing my husband has been able to find that my old printer did that the C309a can't do is scanning my photo negatives from my events. This printer is worth the money and very conservative on its ink usage.

BEST PRINTER
5 Star Review   By Macy on HP - Sep 25, 2010

This is by far the best printer that I have ever had. It replaced a 6-year-old HP 6100 that is still in excellent condition and I plan to donate it. The 309a has many more features. It was extremely easy to set up and the print quality is excellent. My photos are professional quality. Everything works fine, printing, faxing, scanning and photos. I even convinced my neighbor to purchase one after seeing the quality of this printer and she is equally pleased with her 309a.

High quality performance
5 Star Review   By Janel on HP - Sep 22, 2010

I have always chosen HP for my printers, scanners, and most recently desktop computer. I am very impressed with the features this printer has and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a quality product at a low cost. The cartridges are easy to install, and the option of having the capability of 2-sided printing has been a plus. I have had this printer for a few months now, and I have absolutely no complaints.

Still not quite right
3 Star Review   By Lbkeys on HP - Sep 20, 2010

In theory, this AIO should be everything anyone would want in an AIO. Basically , it is. The one problem I am experiencing that nobody seems to know how to combat is; If the AIO is not used for more than a day, it goes into sleep mode and will not function until you physically unplug the power supply and re-initialize. Short of sitting on the phone for 3 hours with Customer Support, I don't know where to go with this issue. The other issue is that I still have two XP(in addition to two Vista) machines that do seem to work properly with it. When I called customer support, they suggested I upgrade to Windows 7 and subsequently offered to sell me the upgrade. Any suggestions?

Devours Ink and Unreliable
2 Star Review   By bchaddy on HP - Sep 17, 2010

I have a lot of experience with photo printers and this is my second HP photo printer. My previous printer and this printer both ran through ink (which is not cheap for this printer!) quickly and had reliability issues. My thought in buying this printer was that, if it costs a lot of money, it must be quality. This printer will give you stellar photos of great quality. Additionally, I digitized 1700 family photos with this printer with ease (the scanner is slow so it took ages but it's easy to use and good quality). However, expect it to come up with a couple random errors along the course of a multi-photo print job (to include one of your ink cartridges running low or a paper jam). It seemed as though every time I sat down to do a print job something minor would go wrong which would make it quite a time consuming process. I found myself redoing print jobs quite a lot because of errors and glitches on both HP photo printers which I have owned. This printer would print about 40 photos before one of the ink cartridges would begin to run out and to replace the whole set of 5 cartridges is $50. Add the cost of the printer and it is more economical and quality to get your pictures printed at the store. Additionally, my printer completely quit printing magenta ink 4 months after I bought it. I have done all sorts of troubleshooting with HP and they have deemed the printer irreparable. This is, of course, an isolated event but as far as dependability this product is batting 0 for 1 for me right now. Additionally, even though I bought the printer 6 months ago, HP records show the warranty as out of date and I am in a warranty update battle with them which may not end in my favor so my advice to you, if you do buy this printer, is to KEEP THE RECEIPT FOR WARRANTY PURPOSES.

1 Star Review   By Redrock on HP - Sep 13, 2010

I have always bought HP printers. This has been the slowest printer ever. It spends more time preparing to print than can ever be imagined. Its noisy. It buzzes. Now the black ink decided it need to rest or something. It just won't print black.

Not for the Poor, Only Comfortablypoor
4 Star Review   By Comfortablypoor on HP - Sep 12, 2010

I've had this printer for 6 months. It does seem to use more than the normal amount of ink, but paired with Surething label maker, the labels I print directly to disc are amazing both to me and my friends. The document feeder means I don't have to keep opening the lid to fax, scan or copy multi page projects. This thing has 3 trays, all loaded and you pick what you want to print, a 4x6 picture on card stock, a Family DVD with a picture (or collage of pictures) on it so you can easily identify whats on it, and 8x11 paper. This printer is far better than the Brother we have at work. Set up was easy and everything works. I don't like the user interface that comes with it, I use an aftermarket product. If you can't afford the ink, don't buy the printer.

Stay away from this printer!!!
1 Star Review   By LynneS on HP - Sep 11, 2010

I bought this printer directly from HP. About one month later, the wireless radio died. When the printer did work, it was loud and locked up in the middle of jobs. Troubleshooting would not solve the reoccuring issues, The printer also uses an incredible amout of very expensive ink. HP is replacing the unit under warranty, but I had to get the same model printer. I like HP, but not this printer.

The Very Best All in One Product Ever
4 Star Review   By Rickn on HP - Sep 10, 2010

I just bought this over the Web and it took me all of 30 minutes from the time I got it at my Door to my house,, to printing, faxing, coping, and scanning... I had to call the HP Support and they took control of my computer and it took the Support Team about 15 Minutes to get my Product to work "Wirelessly",,, and I have my USB Cable hooked to my computer to my old HP Printer, Copier, and Scanner to use when I want to Print many Pages because my old HP All in one Product (except for the Fax), uses Less Ink... But I could not be more happy with my Photosmart All in One Product... I have read that some people have said it looks Pink,,, and Viberates when it Prints,,, and the USB Cable is Hard to pust in,,, My Product does NOT do any of that... I can find NOTHING WRONG WITH IT AT ALL... (Except,, it Does use More Ink than my older HP All in One Printer (Except the Fax),,, so I still use that one when I am going to Print many Pages... I would tell anyone to Buy this Product... It is called: "HP Photosmart Premium, Print, Fax, Scan, Copy, All in One Product "C309a" and I am Very happy with it... Thanks HP,,, Everything I own "Computer-Wise",,, is All, "HP" Products... Thanks, Rick

I needed an All in one printer to prevent me from having to go to a friends or a staples store for productivity. Now I don't have to worry about anything. If I want to copy something really fast and go do something else while it prints I can too, thanks to the (ADF) Automatic Document Feeder on top. My old printer didn't have one so I had to manually scan and copy every page so if I had 50 pgs to copy I would be the for a while. No worries now!!! I just recently created and printed all my wedding invitations and it came out wonderfully. My family and friends were asking me where did I get them from. So when I told them I did them myself they were absolutely shocked and didn't believe me. Thanks HP for creating such an awesome product!!!!

unhappy
1 Star Review   By nvlizard on HP - Sep 7, 2010

I was given this as a gift about 1 1/2 years ago. For the first year it was fantastic. At one year the wireless radio quit working and I had to go to cable connection. Now the 4x6 photo paper will not feed so I can no longer make copies of my photos. I now have a very expensive printer/copier with no photo capabilities. All the trouble shooting steps do not correct the problem at all

I'm In Love
5 Star Review   By Anonymous on HP - Sep 3, 2010

My wonderful husband just bought me the HP Photosmart Premium Fax All-in-One printer and I just love it. It is so nice to not worry about how something is going to turn out and when you use HP Printers you do not have to worry . I have tried many other brands and you get what you pay for. Thank you HP for the wonderful quality printers that you design and sell. Keep them coming.

Program
3 Star Review   By Anonymous on HP - Sep 3, 2010

The program that came with the Photosmart Printer is hideous!! The older programs allowed to to choose photos, layouts, and enchancement all on one site. Now you have to leap from place to place and there is not as much choice of printing layouts. A big step backwards! So far my prints have been just so so! Not as good as my old seven year ojd Photosmart.

Such High Hopes
2 Star Review   By enon on HP - Sep 3, 2010

This unit is like "when it's good, it's great, but when it's bad, it's a nightmare." I love all the features, but when I need something done, the ADF locks up half way through. There is no clear function, just shut off and reboot to clear the feeder. The copy mode will lock up in a very similar manner. I have to monitor the fax function to be sure all pages go through, as it will stop sometimes. Don't get me wrong, this doesn't happen all the time, but when it does, you want to see if the unit can fly. Fred

Inconsistent performance
4 Star Review   By eemr123 on HP - Sep 3, 2010

I've been a loyal HP printer user for decades and this model disappointed me a bit because of the following: 1) It consumes ink cartriges like crazy 2) Some times it doesn't finish printing the bottom of a page 3) The CD printing is very nice but the software is very very very poor (I recommend EPSON Artisan 50 for this purpose instead) 4) It becomes unresponsive very often requiring a reset I will continue to be a loyal HP printer user but I cannot recomment this particular model, it came out full of bugs.

Great Printer!
4 Star Review   By Uptownray on HP - Sep 3, 2010

A little tough to install software. Initially, wouldn't save scans (although it appeared to - no error messages). Googled solution, installed update, all fine. Use XL ink cartridge. Smaller ones do go fast...Great for photos, prints fast, drag and drop printing.

Great All-in-ONe
5 Star Review   By Kizzme on HP - Sep 3, 2010

Very happy with this all-in-one, although I have only used printer and scanner modes so far. This all-in-one replaces a similar all-in-one (C7280) that was destroyed by lightning, and its operation is very similar. Easy to set up on wireless network. Impressed with all of the software that monitors operation and informs of any problems, such as low ink colors, out of paper, etc. Also provides a number of reports on all-in-one status, capabilities, network configuration, etc. I learned very quickly that one must use the XL ink cartridges to keep from running out of ink in a rather short time, and the XL cartridges make more sense economically, too.

Excellent home office / family unit
5 Star Review   By Kid60 on HP - Sep 3, 2010

I have had the unit for 4 month now and it has exceeded my expectations. I have 3 laptops and one desktop all printing to it wirelessly without a problem. Installation was easy but it's important to follow the wireless connection directions carefully. The phot quality is very good and the CD/DVD label printer was an unexpected surprise. I'm slowly creating labels for all my home movies that I moved to DVD. I like the 5 seperate ink cartridges so I'm only replacing the empty color, but buy the XL they last much longer than the standards and are worth the extra money. I did find you do need to load portions of the software for Window7 to get full fuctionality even though Windows7 say's it's already loaded.

A review after 1 year
5 Star Review   By WLSNC on HP - Sep 1, 2010

I usually do not write a review right after I purchase a product because I want to use it for a while and see how it performs. After using the C309a for a year I can honestly say it is a great printer. When I first purchased it I was using Vista and then upgraded to Windows 7 with very little problems. It works great with all of my wireless products. I am not a computer geek but I have not had any problems making this printer do anything I want. If I had to complain about something it would be that I think it uses ink quicker than I would like but all in all it is a great printer and a great buy for the price.

never again!
1 Star Review   By beadlady on HP - Sep 1, 2010

We purchased this boat anchor on the recommendation of a friend. They're Nuts! It took my husband - with a computer science degree - days to get it to communicate with both our wireless systems. We can send faxes, but can never receive them. Uses ink like water, is slow, noisy, shakes the desk it's on when working and now that the warranty is out the print head needs to be replaced and it will cost almost as much as a new machine! I bought it to use in my small business - a cartridge printed 100 business cards before running out, that was about 50 cents each including paper - I could have had photos professionally done for less!!!!! I wanted mostly to print out expense report copies instead of going to staples. If I had gone there for printing, it would have cost me less than the cost of this machine and constant replacement of cartridges.

Poor tech support and software
1 Star Review   By Jagdis on HP - Aug 22, 2010

I bought this printer yesterday and am trying to set up since last night. I had presumably installed the software but setup failed repeatedly and could not get the tech support. I will return it to Costco for full refund. I had two HP printers before they worked reasonably well. I bought a New iMAC wit OS X 10.5.8 which is not supported by HP psc 950 thus I bought this piece (?). I am sorry I should have taken the advice of other owners. But I fell for it by listening to HP saleslady at Costco. Sorry.

Excellent Printer
5 Star Review   By JRVO on HP - Aug 22, 2010

I have had my printer for 2 weeks and couldn't be more pleased. Setup and installation was very easy as was adding the printer to my home network! Picture quality is excellent and relatively quick. It does vibrate more than my previous C6200 Photosmart but hasn't affected the quallity of the printing. The only drawback I have found that even the LOW ring setting for fax is very loud. I would definitely reccomend this printer to anyone looking for excellent quality and ease of use!

Great product poor software
1 Star Review   By Annxqz on HP - Aug 15, 2010

I started having trouble with my computer right after I installed the software for this all in one. I am running winxp pro. The scanner-copier and fax worked great from the machine. But the software crashed my system. I had to reformat my drive and start from scratch. When I called HP I was told this scanner was not meant to work with anything but win 7. That is not what the salesman told me, nor does the label on the software say that. I liked how it worked, but if it is going to crash my system I can't use it. I think HP is a good product, but for some reason this just wouldn't work for me. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

High Quality Printer Finally
4 Star Review   By Mayrankil on HP - Aug 9, 2010

I am finally getting to the point where I am happy with the C309a Photosmart Premium AIO. The initial software and updates I had downloaded from HP for the first 3 or 4 months were not very good, and I kept having to download and reinstall. I kept losing the HP Solution Center software from my desktop. However, in the last month or so, the newest version from the HP website has now made my printer fully functional wirelessly. Don't waste your time and money on the regular ink cartridges, if you do much printing at all, as they just don't last very long. I always use the XL cartridges and they last quite a while, but not as long as the larger cartridges on some of the older HP printers. This is the third of 3 HP printers I have installed on my network. The network set up was very easy. I haven't yet tried to print on a CD, but I like that I have that capability when I am ready to use it. The pictures I print come out beautifully, whether I use photo paper or plain paper. I haven't had a lot of luck using the sheet feeder. It usually jams, but I don't need it often. I did use the scan to a USB thumb drive, and that worked beautifully! I do a lot of printing and this machine meets my needs very well now, with one big exception. I am not able to print invitation size envelopes, which I do frequently, on this printer. I have to use my oldest HP 2710 printer for all my envelope printing. I don't know why HP took away the envelope printing functionality, but thank goodness my old 2710 is still working well.

Very Good Printer
4 Star Review   By Fordlitenin on HP - Aug 6, 2010

I am well pleased with my new photosmart printer. Setup was very easy and it printing of documents and pictures is very good. Quality of the printer is very good. The only item is the print cartridge usage which is higher than I had expected compared to my officejet. Overall I would recommend this product to anyone who has a need for an all in one.

Very happy with this machine
5 Star Review   By wejohn on HP - Aug 6, 2010

First off, I am a medium home user. The fact that this is an all in one machine is great. The printer does double sided copies so that is great. Fax is easy, no complaints on fax either directions. copy is easy, have done a lot of copying. Pictures come out very good on the right photo paper. you just have to follow the right prompts. All the research I did had this machine very highly rated. I have no complaints but It is a little tall, but it does all functions, so what? The paper feeder is a bit hard to get to refill but the machine hold both photo and regular paper in different feeders.

using too much ink

Bought as replacement to c7280 which had failed after two years. this model was reported to be better on ink costs . So far cartridge cost is exhorbitant for minimal use to date, and exceeds printer cost. Will have to evaluate whether cost becomes overriding factor on whether to replace printer.

Good all-in-1 for the price
4 Star Review   By Harlan on HP - Aug 2, 2010

Got this from Amazon for $125 after $75 trade in of an old Epson. Works great as an all-in-one, although it's pretty slow in all respects, and goes through ink fast. Haven't had to change the cartridges yet, even thought it's been nagging for days that they are low or out. The output quality is very good, especially on high gloss photo paper, but be aware that the ink is water based so, even after several days, a drop of water on the picture will ruin it. The auto feed for double sided scanning is really nice, as well as for duplex printing/copying. It has all the bells and whistles I want in an all-in-1, but I haven't used the FAX, or CD printing yet. Wireless works great with Windows 7, and the USB, and memory card slots are an added bonus to move pictures and files between the all-in-1 and the computer. I'd rate it higher if it didn't use ink so fast.

bad product
2 Star Review   By windhawk on HP - Aug 1, 2010

This is a bad product. It fails to function every time I start to fax or copy something. It starts to work and takes a sheet into the hopper and then gets lost. I have shut it down by pulling the electrical cord. It will come back up and then work. When it starts to print something it goes through this incredible noise and gyrations. It can take up to two full minuets before it starts to print a page and it prints so slowly one page will take one to two minutes. I wouldn't buy this printer again.

Its The best that I have seen in a long time. I have owned 5 and still own 3 HP Photosmart Printers. I only use them for pictures but when they have to be used for other things as making birthday cards with pic on the pages there is no other printer that can be used. The clarity is just that. People ask me if I got the pictures done at places that do photos . I just say ok

Good decision
4 Star Review   By vjhl on HP - Jul 31, 2010

After comparing several ADF all in one models, the C309a comes out on top. The print quality is wonderful. It is easy to connect to a wireless router or use the bluetooth. I printed a photo from my blackberry directly to the printer and it came out fabulous! The only con is that when you print there is nothing to stop the paper from shooting out when it is finished. So if you print several pages they will be all over the area where the printer is situated. But that is a minor downside. I am very happy with my purchase.

Great printer...
5 Star Review   By WeHoMikey on HP - Jul 30, 2010

I already had a great laser All-in-One (LaserJet 3150), as well as a great photo printer (PhotoSmart 7960). However, I needed a scanner with both sheet-feed and flat-bed capability, and considered a handful of solutions. When Costco had this printer (very highly rated by Consumer Reports, by the way) for $100 or so off, my decision was made for me. The scanner can be used from any computer on my home network, and the print quality - both text and photos - is great. Faxing is intuitive, so everyone in the house can use it without needing help from the resident I.T. person (i.e. me). Cons? We don't use the Bluetooth printing feature, feeling it's a likely security hole into our network, however each time power is cycled on the printer (when we go out of town, for instance), the printer powers back up with Bluetooth back on. Also, don't believe the HP copy about the supplied printer cartridges lasting for "300 pages". Not true. We got about 100 with basic text and periodic webpage printing (i.e. airline boarding passes). I'd like to have a decent laser All-in-One, but they're double (or triple) the price. I'll put up with the expensive cartridges for a couple of years.

Great Replacement All-In-One
4 Star Review   By wildmannupp on HP - Jul 30, 2010

I really wanted a replacement printer-scanner that had the best features found in this model. Automatic Document Feeder and one that does double sided scanning. Double sided printing without all of the turn over and figuring out which way it needs to be facing hassle that I have had to play with. And the greatest thing it works with both Mac OSX and Windows without any hassles.

Nothing but trouble!
2 Star Review   By Momma on HP - Jul 30, 2010

This printer prints beautiful photos, occasionally. Usually, it makes lots of noise, goes off line, and eats ink cartridges. And now, 55 days out of warranty on a rarely used printer, the printhead has quit. This $2 piece of plastic has turned the printer into a paperweight. I can't even use it to scan or fax at this point. After an hour on the phone, the bottom line is that they "dont have a printhead in stock." I can order one from parts, at "usually 2/3 the cost of a new printer -- they would rather I bought a new printer." I am so furious with this paperweight! I will not buy another one!

I have had this printer for just over one year and in this time it had to be replaced 2x. 1st the photo tray would not go in all the way and pick up the photo paper. I had to hold it in to pick up the paper. The ink goes so FAST...ALWAYS HAVING TO BUY MORE INK. and now I am waiting for another printer because it can not fax , scan or copy unless you are copying something from a word document or off the computer. I use to always buy Dell products and thought I would try HP and bought a desktop and this printer spending over 2,000.oo NEVER AGAIN will I buy HP. I had to call Tech support at least 4x to try and get something resolved...Will not buy another HP product again.

5 Star Review   By JRsquare on HP - Jul 17, 2010

I couldn't be happier with this printer. I've had it for 7 months or so and it does it all without a fuss. Setup was a snap, including wireless and fax. It's USB attached to our desktop but we print remotely from the laptop all the time also. Even two-sided printing works as advertised. Photo printing quality is excellent too. Now I only hope it holds up for a decent while without mechanical failures.

Can I throw it away?
1 Star Review   By Kristina on HP - Jul 14, 2010

Can you throw a fairly new printer away? I now have an emotional relationship with my new printer - I hate it! I've had it two months and have had to replace the cartridges twice now. The ink in my old printer lasted 12 plus months but this sucks it down. The machine makes so much noise after every copy printed (realigning the cartridges I was told) that you have to walk out of the room to keep from going crazy. I have absolutely nothing good to say about this machine and will most likely give it to someone else with the warning that they will probably hate it also.

They use more ink than most printers....they do not tell you how to save ink.....maybe save paper but NOT INK! I have printed approx. 8-10 pictures (4X6) since owning my hp printer (approx 6-7 months). However I'm on my 3rd - yes THIRD "photo" black ink! I do make a lot of document copies and thought they'd use my "extra" size black ink ...... but NO ....they use up my PHOTO ink??????? WHY...don't ask me... but you can ask HP if you could ever talk with a person....I'd like to but people don't exist anymore! Foolish me...I did wonder when I bought my printer W-H-Y they needed a seperate "BLACK" cartridge and now i KNOW....

Dissapointed!
1 Star Review   By Bets on HP - Jul 8, 2010

I've had to have this printer replaced twice already. Takes forever to print photos because you have to hold the photo tray in place so that the photo paper is pulled into the printer properly...otherwise it just keeps prompting you to load paper in the tray when it is ALREADY FULL! Now the printer won't print anything -- text or photos -- but it does produce blank sheets of paper with pretty pink lines here and there. I've always owned HP printers, but this one is really a disappointment.

Great assistance
4 Star Review   By rongav on HP - Jul 3, 2010

Bought this product as a Christmas present for my wife. HP had excellent customer service and I had the product in 3 days after ordering. Product worked great right out of the box. Was able to get it up and running on the wireless network in 60 minutes, did need to dowload the latest drivers though a 40 to 60 minute process. Five months after purchase got a low ink warning. Changed the cartridges and still would not print. Followed all HP tips for cleaning etc then got a blue/grey screen of death. Seems there was a hardware failure that HP was able to diagnose by the error code. Again customer support was fantastic. Was told it was still under warrenty and a replacement was on the way. Got the replacement in 8 days and sent the broken one back, all paid for by HP. New one is working great. Pictures and prints look fantastic. Would recommend to others in spite of the failure of the first.

I bought this for myself even though I already had the HP Officejet Pro K5400. I wanted the ability to scan photos and copy papers. I love the way this machine handles both. My husband uses this printer for his computer and he had had to tell me that I did a good job by bringing it home. For normal printing I still use the K5400 but for scanning and copying I use the Photosmart. Both printers are great so far.

Totally Satisfied
5 Star Review   By RickyN on HP - Jul 2, 2010

The product is, and does, exactly as described in its ads. It worked flawlessly out of the box and continues to do so many months later. I had previously always used Epson printers but got sick of their constant clogging and subsequent wasted ink - this unit never clogs. You don't need a computer to do anything thanks to its wonderful front panel. The card reader reads high capacity SD cards perfectly - I had to previously buy a separate unit to do this with my computer. It works great with my old XP desktop and my newer Vista laptop. This printer is fast and makes excellent pictures, which surprised me as it has 2 less color cartridges that my last Epson. Finally, my main incentive for buying this unit was that it could print directly onto disks. This it does and it's no harder than inserting a sheet of paper. My only gripes are that 1 - the ink standard cartridges don't last long, so keep with the high capacity ones; 2 - I get some minor smudging along the right side edge when printing on CDs and nothing HP has told me to do corrects it; 3 - the included software is weak and awkward for scanning and printing CDs.

5 Star Review   By DEASHLEY on HP - Jul 2, 2010

THIS IS THE BEST ALL-N-1 PREMIUM FAX PRINTER. THE EASE OF SET UP TO USEAGE OF ALL FEATURES, COULDN'T BE BETTER. EVERYONE WOULD LOVE THIS PRINTER. I THOUGHT MY LAST ALL-N-1 FAX PHOTOSMART WAS FABULOUS, BUT HP REALLY NAILED THIS 1. THE ONLY WAS IT COULD BE BETTER, WOULD BE IF IT READ YOUR MIND.

great on a good day
4 Star Review   By ntxcreate on HP - Jul 2, 2010

I have several HP products and use this printer a lot, every day. Most of the time it works very well wirelessly. I mostly print double sided and love that feature.. The wireless gave out within warranty and after much effort to identify it was really broken and many contacts with tech support, it was replaced. All was well for a couple of months and now sometimes it goes to sleep and will not wake up so I have to unplug it and plug in again. I think it thinks I need to get up and stretch occasionally. There are some double sided jobs that print strangely (shrink in size) although this could be an issue with the third-party software. Some of the problems I have found have been caused by HP's use of old Adobe Flash software in their HP software conflicting with later automatically uploaded Adobe Flash drivers. The current version of HP solutions does seem to be "playing nice" with my older and newer HP printers (3) and XP3 and Win 7 Ultimate computers.

Poor Product
1 Star Review   By thejayjay on HP - Jul 1, 2010

Purchased this printer to use in my home office. Scans, some faxing, color copies.Mainly wireless feature. Pairing this printer with my new Touchsmart 300. Purchased from HP on Apr 23, 2010. Would not stay connected wireless and finally had to use cable. It sits about 30 inches from my desktop and fax works when it feels like it. Sometimes it just freezes up and I have to turn off the printer and restart my project. Slow, slow, slow making copies. Takes forever to print something. It appears it will drink toner. Not a good product, at least the one I have.

One Stellar Do-It-All Network Printer
5 Star Review   By Mouse2U on HP - Jun 24, 2010

Right out of the box, one notices its' sleek design, how light it is, and how few pieces there are too it. However, does it perform. It has every imaginable feature & even more than one realizes only discovering them once you begin using it. Its' ability to load files from inserting your own camera disk to even a cd with image files on it (yes right into the printer itself). Whether you fax, copy, scan, print (even color prints from your digital camera card) in color or b/w, you will be amazed at what it can do. Of course it has wireless capabilities and can run on a network as well. I got mine on sale at a local vendor, then with the credit for recycling of an old printer that did not work, it was a GREAT bargain. My only issue is the size of the ink cartridges. With it on our network @ home & everyone using it (big family & kids) why it seems that monthly we are replacing the cartridges. All isn't that bad, in less that 5 minutes the old are out and the new are in. DON't PASS THIS ONE UP!!!

so much potential
1 Star Review   By officelady on HP - Jun 21, 2010

I bought this all in one due to reviews on CNEt and Staples to replace a relatively new epson all in one which would not copy and fax when its ink cartridges dried up, which happened regularly. The epson requires all cartridges to be replaced when one dries up, thus requiring a $60 expense fairly regularly.HP hypes its lower ink costs, and wanting to be "green" and save money figured in the purchase. So far, we can barely get it to send a fax, although it will receive and print any and all junk faxes. It says the original is jammed but always spits it back out.It also will not copy except if we follow about a five minute long protocol to get a copy. The machine may possibly print but we bought it for faxing and scanning. It does neither. It is extremely loud and clunky and I would not recommend it to anyone.

Very good all in one
4 Star Review   By HPProductLover on HP - Jun 21, 2010

This was a replacement printer for my HP C7280 printer. Seems like it uses way less ink than my previous printer did. I like the separate cartridge idea, but make sure after depleting the cartridges that came with it you purchase the XL ones otherwise they run out quick. I buy all my cartridges from their home shopping website and they are very good about covering them under warranty if you have problems with them. My Photo XL cartridge was having issues right after I put it in and they replaced it with no problems. That made me very happy as almost everything I have in my house (laptops, desktops, monitors, and SEVERAL printers) is made by HP. The only problem is with their warranty system, it seems every time I buy a new one and register it, I end up having to fax them a copy of the receipt just to get the one year of warranty your supposed to get automatically from them. That should be easier than it is. Such a pain. Other than that, so far so good.

I Can't Even Install It!
1 Star Review   By socallawstudent on HP - Jun 20, 2010

I bought the Photosmart C309a 7 days ago, after my very old and very wonderful PSC2110 died of old age. I own 2 other HP All-in-Ones that I have never had any problems with, and I wanted a smaller third one for my vacation home. Additionally I have an HP laptop that also works great ( with Vista Business 32 bit operating system ), and I thought that buying another HP printer would be the most time-saving and efficient way to go, as I am really busy in law school. Was I wrong! I have spent a week trying to get it installed, both from the CD provided and from downloading the installation from HPsupport. Plus none of the solutions on HP.com/support addressed the error messages received each time the install failed. The only plus about this printer is that the wireless connectivity was easy to install. I am sorry, but HP has lost me as a printer customer until they can come up with an All-in-One printer that is easy and quick to install and user-friendly, like the old HP printers were.

Love HP but hate this printer
2 Star Review   By Hughv on HP - Jun 14, 2010

It is noisy, slow, jams a lot, take a long time to warm up; loading paper is difficult and causes feed jams. I actually took a hammer at it. This is my 7+ HP printer but this one I would not recommend.

a GREAT PRINTER SERIES
5 Star Review   By Anonymous on HP - Jun 14, 2010

I have the printer (C6180 Photosmart All-In-One) now 3 generations 'old' ... the only issues that i have had with this printer in the now 7 years since using has been that NOW - the newest MS Operating System seems to be a little more 'finiky' about what 'devices' it sees. That's perfectly understandable, but now it seems that i am having some issue (possibly non-related specifically to the printer) --- with Windows 7 --- it must be that this 'older' printer and the Network setup that I'm using is not working as I expect....must do more than just most recent download of driver and updt pkg. Never-the-less, this SERIES of PRINTERS FAR EXCEED EXPECTATIONS, and I have been 'impressed' with HP SUPPORT...It actually is on the same level as Microsoft

Best Buy
4 Star Review   By coffeefx on HP - Jun 11, 2010

I wasn't sure I wanted an HP printer with so many features, but I have used everyone of them. And I have to say that this is a best buy for me. My one problem is that I have it on a small table and it moves around on it when printing. Setting up the wireless and bluetooth features went in a snap as long as you read and follow directions.

Worst purchase ever!
1 Star Review   By Vittoria on HP - Jun 8, 2010

If you don't mind reloading the software every few days--or not being able to scan, then you might like this "all-in-one"..but I suggest looking into another brand. No help either from support, other than tell you to reload software--really? And...one of the noisiest printers and forget if you are in a hurry! Will not allow to scan from the front panel or on desktop screen. Many errors. NOT Recommended.

Perfect for home/office/homeschool
5 Star Review   By AMDR on HP - Jun 7, 2010

I highly recommend this product! It's absolutely perfect for the home office, sales, homeschooling projects and family photos. Love it! We only buy HP products. We don't waste our time on Dell, Apple, etc. Our lives are too busy to deal with the issues with other manufacturer's products. We need quality all the time, every time. Thanks HP!

Not reliable, and ink drain quickly
2 Star Review   By asicman on HP - Jun 4, 2010

This printer has a lot of good features, but not reliable. I used it for 6 months and I frustrated some of the times. Pro: 1. wireless - good, no problem 2. printing - I used it wirelessly and I have no problem, good print quality 3. duplex printing - slow, but still functional Con: 1. I set the energy saver to on, so the display turns off after a while or it goes into standby mode. After hours of idle, copy, fax, and scan locks up. It appeared that the printer has problem of getting back to normal operation after it got into sleep mode.(print from computer is fine, but not for copy , fax, or scan) Need to unplug and plug power in order to reset the printer. Called HP support few times, the representives were not very good. They have no idea about this problem and they just asked me to do hardware reset. When I read the reviews, there were number of people complained similar issues. I was surprised that the support people were not aware these isuues. 2. The inks drained very quickly. I purchased the XL inks, the black ink doesn't print 800 pages, more like 400 pages. The color inks also drained very quickly. The inks are expensive. 3. The printer has long setup time. The printer takes more than a minute before it starts to print the first page. 4. 2 side printing is slow. 5. The user setting on the software does not work well for 2 side printing. After I saved the setting, it did not really saved. Next time, when I used my saved setting, the 2 sided setting was cleared. In summary, this printer is not reliable, and not as fast as HP claimed.

Worst HP Ever
1 Star Review   By Anonymous on HP - Jun 2, 2010

I've had 5 HP printers and this is the absolutely worst printer ever. Not only does it cost a fortune to keep ink cartridges, it DOES NOT print out the number of documents each cartridge is estimated to print. I purchased it at office depot and had to take another printer HP printer back that I had purchased because of the poor quality in photos printed. The sales associated suggested I purchase this one since I print so much. WRONG!! Because you have to purchase 5 ink cartridges - 2 black, 1 yelloow, 1 blue, and 1 magenta, I've gone through approximately 150-175 XL cartridges since I purchased it in Nov. 2009. I've always sworn by HP printers but this one let me down BIG TIME. My last excellent HP printer cost about $399, lasted forever, printed excellent photos, graphics in my documents, and the ink lasted forever. HP sucked me into this one. They're making all their money off of thhis one in ink purchases!

Worse decision I ever made
1 Star Review   By Laspademaiden on HP - Jun 2, 2010

This printer has been a problem from day one. I had problems with it when I had XP but when I bought a new 'HP' computer with Windows 7, the problems really escalated!! The printer is not compatable with Windows 7 and I have gone through chat sessions, upgrades, I have done all the Q & A's, it drinks ink and I cannot get any satisfaction no matter what I try. I have tried to install the new driver but it won't install. I have done this 3 times. I am so frustrated with this printer I cannot tell you how disappointed I am. I have all HP products thinking this will help to make everything work better together but when the new Windows 7 PC won't recognize a 9 month old HP printer all in one, then something is wrong. I don't know what to do about this problem. I hate to pitch it because it cost so much money but I cannot use all of the features so it is not much good except to print something. I cannot scan, it is very finicky with pictures, it takes forever for it to stop all it's gruntin' and groaning after it finishes printing. Please don't buy this printer, it will drive you crazy!

Not so great
1 Star Review   By b00bear on HP - May 27, 2010

Mine printed 4 times. All I printed was black text but my colours ran out as well. Ok, so I bought new ink. After I clicked the ink in, Photosmart said one was empty. Ok, replaced that...still reads empty. I tried to print but after much shaking and noise there was a distinctive grinding sound. I got the message to load paper in the paper tray. It was loaded but I did it again and again and again. The same message...Load paper into main paper tray. I give up. It's going back!

Try As I Might To Not Purchase an HP...
3 Star Review   By cmaronmurphy on HP - May 27, 2010

... this is my third All-In-One since 2004, hence the title of my review. I think that three(3) devices within a seven(7) year usage period is a bit much, hence the preferred 3.5 star rating for lack of long-term reliability. Both the previous two failed mechanically. However, I continue to purchase HP's, because of their superb industrial design, full feature set, and value for the money (even factoring in replacement costs). I purchased this at Best Buy this week on sale for $199, which compared to roughly $150 to repair the unit. There are now five(5) carts instead of six(5) and it includes duplex printing as standard. I have not found it uses any more ink than my previous model. In fact, with one less cartridge, I might even save a few dollars. They've moved the inputs to the left-hand side of the printer, so I had to do some rewiring - okay thirty(30) minutes of my time. Else, I had it up and running in under forty-five(45) minutes, starting from time of opening the box - easier than previous models. The setup display on the unit is quite helpful when following along with the setup guide. The noise levels are not as bad as some have stated. I'd say the mechanism during PRINTING is about 3-5db quieter than my previous C6180. However, the setup noise which occurs during cart replacement, paper "grabbing", and startup is not negligible. However, in my home office situation, this would only become an issue if I was on a very quite conference call (you should have your mute button on anyway in this situation ;-)) Else, the noise should really not be a factor when considering this printer. My main issues with HP printers and thus the less than 4 star rating - they will fail within 2-3 years of regular home office (daily, in my case, but nowhere near excessive) use. I had a two(2) year extended warranty on the first, and it failed somewhere between year two and three. I had a three(3) warranty on the last one, and it failed two(2) months following the end of the third year. I had to spend $65 on a one(1) year phone support, because you most likely will have problems with the software over time - it's bloated and touches a lot of registries. If you are regularly adding applications or making updates, some registry will get affected which hobbles your printer. And you will begrudgingly need to call HP outside of your warranty. So here's my plan - at $199 there is simply nothing that comes close in the areas of feature set and industrial design (very important in a small office setting). Best Buy no longer offers a three(3) year warranty (see my previous comments about failures). However, HP now offers a three(3) year support service which includes tech support via phone for about $90. Even if my machine doesn't fail within that timeframe, I know that I'll have a software issue and having that all ready setup and covered by this plan will make the inevitable downfall less costly to manage. Additionally, the support for this plan is carried out within North America, so language barriers are removed, too.

WORST DECISION EVER!!!!!
1 Star Review   By willow on HP - May 26, 2010

Don't even consider buying the Photosmart Premium. I purchased the Photosmart Premium 15 months ago and it has today completely quit working. Even when it worked, it always caused me problems. It is extremely tempermental. It often failed to recognize that the paper tray was full and refused to print due to an "empty tray", which meant canceling the print job, reloading paper, resending print job, receiving error message, turning printer off, turning printer on, waiting for it to reboot, sending print job, receiving empty tray error message, taking out paper, replacing paper exactly where it was before, canceling print job, resending print job, receiving error message, canceling print job, taking paper out of tray, reloading paper into tray, sending print job, receiving empty tray error message, canceling print job, taking paper out of tray, replacing paper in tray with different supply of standard white paper, resending print job, waiting for empty tray error message, receiving empty tray error message. I would repeat this process a dozen times until one of two things happened: either the printer finally (finally) actually printed all or at least part of the print job OR I would e-mail the document to my office and print it there (where the printer always works). In the entire 15 months I've struggled to make use of the machine, it has successfully printed only one photograph on photo paper. The photo paper tray never really worked, again the machine generally failed to recognize that the photo paper was properly loaded in the tray and sent an error message about an "empty tray" rather than printing anything. I tried numerous types and weights of photo paper, and always received the same very disappointing results with trying to print a photo on photo paper, namely, no photo. In the 15 months that I suffered with the Photosmart Premium I succeeded in getting it to print only one photo. That photo is a picture of my dog. I'm going to hang it on the wall in a gold frame because THE PHOTO COST ME ALMOST THREE HUNDRED DOLLARS! Then, I'm going to go out and buy a new printer manufactured by any company other than HP.

Great Printer - Eats Cartridges

if you ever get it installed...
2 Star Review   By TimW on HP - May 20, 2010

The driver and software installation process is VERY unreliable. It can say that it has fully installed AFTER you connect (unable to install it via wireless router) via a USB cable, but after a reboot - it will continue to say that you did not install it fully. Scanner software could use an upgrade. Printer functions and performance is quite decent. I would not recommend this product - esp if you are a very notice user and there is no IT help desk support. (yes I got my office IT help desk to help me and it was still and issue for them - and we carry HP products in our office)

really Bad Buy
1 Star Review   By doctordon on HP - May 13, 2010

I have had this unit for about 4 months, and have had nothing but trouble. I had trouble hooking up to the wireless, and it took the on line technicians more than an hour to get it working. Twice the printing failed--once from the computer to the printer, and once the scanner didn't work. Back to the on line technicians--each time required 30 to 45minutes trying to get it working again. The printer is very slow. Spend a lot of time listening to the unit make all kind of noise. It is supposed to be two sided printing, but when that is on, many times the single page printing only prints half of a page. I could go on and on, but this unit is a lemon.

All in one 309A
1 Star Review   By All309a on HP - May 10, 2010

This is our second HP Printer. It is the WORST printer we have ever owned. The thing is posessed. It won't scan, it prints when it feels like it. It would not work with Windows 7 as stated on the box. HP support sent a new software disc to download. That fixed the problem with Windows 7 and the Support Center. Despite the software fix, the printer still will not print when prompted. The display window reads "printing", but nothing happens. Same for trying to scan. The display window reads "scanning", but nothing happens. The end result: I have been in contact with HP Customer Support and they are in the process of sending me a re-conditioned printer to try. I will try this re-conditioned printer, however, I do not have any faith in it working any better than the original.

HP Photosmart Premium Fax All-in-One Printer, Scan
4 Star Review   By Anonymous on HP - May 9, 2010

I was given this printer as a gift and would recommend it based on the printing functions. Prints are awesome. Machine is a bit noisy especially at the end of the print cycle. The only negative is this machine literally drinks ink, and because it uses so much, it becomes very costly to operate. I actually reconnected my old HP printer for everyday printing to save money on ink.

Great all in one photo printer
4 Star Review   By AlOhio on HP - May 7, 2010

In general I am extremely pleased with this printer. The photos are very sharp with great color. The general purpose printing is fast and clear and the ability to print on CD's or DVD's is a great plus. My only negative comment relates to the software for printing on CD's. The design capabilities are very limited and HP was unable to provide data to allow use with other software.

Great Features when they work
3 Star Review   By Clarkski on HP - May 7, 2010

I purchased two 309a Photosmart Premium w/FAX AIO at christmas time. Great value with available promotions. COLOR - I like the white case ilo black used in most models. DUPLEXER - I was anxious to reduce paper consumption via the auto duplexer and the auto sheet feeder made this printer fully featured. The duplexer cannot print on the bottom 1 inch of paper, so you have to be selective about how it is used AUTO SHEET FEEDER - However, one of the two machines continues to have problems with the auto feeder jamming and or slipping. Sometimes will run on indefinitely after feeding the last page. Have been online with customer support several times to resolve. Had to reset and reinstall the printer now 3 times. A very time consuming, time wasting process. Also . INK CARTRIDGE/USE - I recycle ink cartridges at a major chain office store. Last month they stopped accepting the 564 cartridges (for the $3 reward per cartiridge) indicating they are an INK TANK not an INK CARTRIDGE. When the ink runs low, there are warnings provided. However, there are usually 11-15 pages which will print after the final warning. But there IS NOT a warning when the ink is actually gone, just a wasted page. My Photosmart 3300 would stop printing when the ink was gone until the cartridge is replaced. WIRELESS/INSTALLATION - Wireless has generally worked quite well, but have had problems getting the 2nd printer installed, because the software won't shutoff the router firewall on the second installation. Took 3 customer service calls to figure this out. PRINT QUALITY - Print quality has been very good. No issues SOFTWARE/INK USE - The web based interface is very good. I really like the usage report info. for total pages printed and total ink cartridges used. It does make me wonder however about rate of ink usage. I'm on my 4 black cartridge and 3rd of other colors. All but the originals have been XL's - total pages were just 1100 on one machine. Granted I had about 150 pages which were nearly all black, but still way off the quoted 800 sheets per XL black. On the 2nd printer which has been used more normally, 836 pages total on the original and one XL cartiridge (now have a 3rd cartidge installed just recently) I have recomended to a friend but only with some reservation.
