HP Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless
4 Star Review  cnet.com - Sep 8, 2009

THE GOOD: Autoduplexer; automatic document feeder; easy to use 3.4-inch LCD touch screen; painless 802.11b/g wireless setup; industry-leading print speeds; excellent quality prints. THE BAD: Lacks autodial fax buttons, Bluetooth, and a dual paper input tray. THE BOTTOM LINE: The HP Officejet Pro 8500 wireless makes a convincing inkjet argument for offices with a high volume of prints. With a function touch screen, multiple networking options, and an astoundingly fast print speed, it makes perfect sense to give this workhorse an Editors Choice award.

HP Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless
3 Star Review  productwiki.com - Jul 2, 2009

The HP Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless is a wireless all-in-one printer released by HP in 2009. The all-in-one functions include print, copy, scan and fax, all of which can be done in color. As a printer, it is capable of printing 35 pages per minute for draft quality, and up to 11 pages per minute at laser comparable quality in color (15ppm in black) with resolutions of 1200 x 1200 dpi in black and 4800 x 1200 dpi in color. Best printer yet
5 Star Review   By pdc2 on HP - Jan 25, 2011

This is my 3rd HP printer. HP gets better every time. I have every confidence that several yrs from now I will purchase another HP printer-they are king of hill. It was delivered sooner than expected (a few days early) which was nice. Packing was superb. Setup was quick & easy, up & running in about 35-45mins. Although it's plastic, it has a very good strong look & feel about it. It's quiet, no complicated doors, nice big tray for paper, I don't have to struggle to remove the tray cover to print envelopes, cards, etc. This machine is pretty much self explanatory. You don't need any tech savy to work this machine. The printing speed is more than I expected for documents, pictures, specialty paper or projects. It's very smooth & effecient. The fax worked great, so did scanning & copying, I'm no longer at the mercy of the printer fighting with my programs to print items the way I want them printed.

A909 Series Junk buy the 8500A A910
2 Star Review   By Swedishpassions on HP - Jan 19, 2011

First 8500 Pro we bought 1/6/2010 was Dead out of box. Got second one the same night that was OK till a week later when it had a paper jam. Finally had to reset all. Final paper Jam could not get cleared after trying all HP had to offer. On top of that, when it died on December 20th, Didn't call HP till after Holiday when we finally found an "In Warranty" number to call and then they refused warranty. Reluctantly bought a the new 8500A which has been redesigned to fix most the 8500's constant trouble and used the same print cartridges. So far so good. Now if they'd just get rid of that glossy black plastic that shows every finger print. Maybe this one will last longer than 2400 pages...Invest in the XL cartidges; they're worth it!.

Good printer with one minor problem
4 Star Review   By brick on HP - Jan 14, 2011

The printer is, as usual, a good, solid printer. Set up was easy and the wireless works well. I do find that after long periods of inactivity I sometimes cannot wake it up and have to reboot the printer and/or the system to print. This happens at most once a month. Overall, it does exactly what I need it to do.

Great Printer
5 Star Review   By Anonymous on HP - Jan 13, 2011

Definitely like this printer, set-up is easy and most important the print quality is outstanding. My wife and I are college students, she's also an instructor and we weekly print numerous documents and we've had this printer since November 2010 and know is when the black ink level is low. I recommend it for it's features, print quality, ease of use and I've once had to contact customer support and great service overall.

Wanted to love it, but...
1 Star Review   By Admiral on HP - Jan 8, 2011

This printer worked fairly well and did everything I asked of it for about 10 months -- then it died. Can't give it a good review for that reason alone. After spending nearly $300 I really expect more than a disposable product. Now I'm sitting on about $75 worth of printer cartridges that I stocked up on. The problem boils down to the fact that the printer thinks there is a paperjam and will not proceed with anything until it is cleared. There is no paperjam. Not even the smallest scrap of paper is in it, I checked. Looked online at some of the comments about this printer and this is apparently a common problem. Maybe a defective sensor in the machine? So now, after only 10 months, I have to go out and get a new printer.

The best All-in-One HP has ever made
5 Star Review   By JustifiedHomicide on HP - Jan 7, 2011

I have owned 6 HP printers (and 1 non-HP printer), 3 of which were all-in-ones. This unit is by far the best-built and most convenient machine of them all. Bottom-fed paper, combined with the duplex function has given me jam-free, hands-free printing jobs ever since I got it 5 months ago. The CMYK individualized ink cartridges are also a huge money saver, as I only replace the ink that is out, rather than throwing away a tri-color cartridge just because the magenta is out. After a semester's worth of printing lab exersizes and study manual chapters, I have only now had to replace the black cartridge. Granted, I did buy the high-yield cartridges, but High-yield really does mean just that in this case. The 8500 really is a reliable, sturdy printer that replaces the 7110 VERY nicely. If you need to replace your old printer, and want an all-in-one... Get This One.

Outstanding Features and Quality
5 Star Review   By FLShopper on HP - Jan 7, 2011

I have had this printer for approximately one year now and it performs like the first day it was in operation here. The setup was very simple and beautifully explained, so there was no way to mess it up. Within a short amount of time, it was up and running. I love the wireless feature and being able to print from other computers on the home network. I am involved in a couple of large volunteer projects and I do a LOT of printing. I really like the option to print both sides and the way the ink dries on side one, then prints side two, while still taking little time for the job to be done. The printer has performed like a champ and I have not found the ink to be used up fast or to be costly. I also appreciate being able to order the ink and have it shipped so quickly. My last printer was an all in one HP, but it was about 8 years old and did not have some of the newer features. However, it is still working and in a new home. Thank you, HP!

Great printer
5 Star Review   By soldonHP on HP - Jan 7, 2011

I use this printer for home use but I have found that if you buy a good, professional model of something it usually out lasts and out performs the lesser models and in the long run is worth the extra money. The only problem I had was initially setting it up to my computer. The disc for Windows 7 would not correctly load the drivers for scanner and HP Solution center so I had to remove and reinstall after downloading a fix from HP. Worked great after that. Ink usage is amazing - I have printed tons of things and am still on original cartridges. Love the fax feature that allows it to work with an answering machine.

Great Printer
4 Star Review   By jyeagley3 on HP - Jan 7, 2011

In the last year or so I have had 2 Dell Printers. I purchased a PC from them and a Printer along with it. The first printer had an unfixable hardware problem that jammed everytime I tried to print duplex. The replaced it with a V505 and this Printer was always, I mean always losing the Drivers and had to be reinstalled. When I had enough I shopped HP for a Printer because I had an HP PC and a couple HP Printers before and they worked fine. I received my HP OfficeJet Pro 8500 Wireless and had it installed in less than 20 minutes. I have been using it now for about 2 months or so and have not had 1, no not 1, problem with it. I've used all the functions and everything worked jusy exactly as it is supposed to. Luckily I bought it when there was a $150 rebate and I got a $70 coupon with it! The only other thing I can say is I have been "computing" for about 15 years now, have had several printers, and this one out performes them all. I haven't printed a lot of coor documents or pictures yet but the ink usage appears better than any I have had. Do yourself a favor if you're shopping for a printer and carefully consider this one even if there is no rebate or sale. Jerry

Diappointment
3 Star Review   By Oldvic on HP - Jan 5, 2011

I bought my HP 8500 on 5 December 2009 and after 2 or 3 months it was replaced by HP, free of charge, as the paper pick-up wasn't working. The replacement one worked fine until 17th December 2010, when a paper jam occured which could not be cured. Sadly, HP has washed its hands of this problem on the grounds that the replacement product's warranty period dates back to the date of the original purchase. I have had a specialist printer repairer recommended by HP look at it for a fee of £90 and they said that it needed new parts including a memory board which would cost more than a new printer. What a disappointing performance from a once great company.

Paper out issue
2 Star Review   By JanetA on HP - Dec 30, 2010

This is my 2nd replacement 8500 printer for 1 of my machines and have 2 of the 8500's- they BOTH have "paper out" issues. There is enough paper, not too little and not to much - i have no idea why this machine constantly errrors with "no paper in the tray". Very frustrating especially if you have a big print job and walk away. I wanted an HP because that is what I always used previously for our business, however I think a change is needing to take place. (in our business we have 10 HP's - all different models) Only 2 are "all in one" - this machine is a major disappointment. When it works, it is great however it errors everyday with the paper out issue (on both machines) - that is why the low score!

Unreliable
2 Star Review   By JerryE on HP - Dec 26, 2010

This printer works reasonable well most of the time. Unfortunately, most of the time doesn't cut the mustard. The most annoying problem is that the printer occasionally simply doesn't print a portion at the top or bottom of the page. The same source page will reprint fine. When comparing the two, the text that does print is aligned perfectly on both copies: it's as if the ink simply turns on too late (or shuts off too early). Unfortunately, it's often not possible to reprint singles pages when this happens printing a long page from the web. Problem #2: when printing Excel spreadsheets with grid lines enabled, the printer occasionally simply doesn't print a line. On a given page, there may be 2 or 3 missing lines out of 30-50. This doesn't occur on all pages, but on those it does occur on it is consistent each time the page is printed. The missing lines appear normally in Print Preview. Unfortunately, I don't have another printer to compare against. Problem #3: Scattered spots with low ink density. When printing with large fonts, this will show up as a portion of a letter being very light. In one instance where I printed two copies of the same page (a MS Word document), this problem was present on only 2 letters out of an entire line of text -- in exactly the same location on both pages. Problem #4: Occasionally the printer cannot be waken from power save mode. In this state the printer doesn't even respond to the power button - the power cord must be removed to power cycle. After powering up, the device appears to work fine.

5 Star Review   By cabotvt on HP - Dec 23, 2010

Very good printer, my first all-in-one and what a time saver and if you dont think you would need a scanner, fax or auto feed copier, well I'm glad I got one. I have had nothing but great experiences with HP customer service. I had to use the warranty service as well. Brand new machine 4 days later Very happy customer.

I want my money back from HP.
1 Star Review   By MileHigh on HP - Dec 18, 2010

Very disappointed. It constantly resets itself in the middle of print jobs, taking 5-10 minutes. Shutting down can take 10 minutes. It can't copy even 1 copy of a 20 page document without running out of memory. (Maybe if I turn off collated 2 sided copies it might work (TBD), but aren't these business features why this printer costs so much?). It often says it is out of paper though the paper tray is full. For a $400 business printer I am very unhappy that it is so non-productive. I want my money back from HP.

Missing Basic Fax Function
1 Star Review   By DeeManding1 on HP - Dec 6, 2010

Contrary to the User's Guide, THIS MACHINE DOES NOT OFFER THE BASIC FAX CAPABILITY OF Send a Fax from Memory Using the Glass. Excellent HP support reps confirmed User Guide states place the document on the glass or in the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF). Because unit is so new they were not aware the machine only scans into fax memory when using the ADF but not the glass/flat bed. If you have paper not compatible with the ADF like photo, card stock, crinkled, 3 hole, staple holes, or if you want to fax multiple pages from a book, magazine, brochure, menu, manual, etc., you cannot scan into memory to fax multiple pages using the glass! A counter productive and cumbersome work around is to photo copy all of those pages you wanted to fax from the glass/flat bed and run them thru the ADF, or scan them into your PC first. This is a WASTE OF INK, PAPER & TIME! Even the rep at the retailer tried his 910a in the store and confirmed no capability of Sending a Fax from memory using the glass. That also means you cannot Schedule a Fax, even a single page, to send later using the glass/flat bed. I've owned numerous fax machines and All-In-One's over many years and have never had a fax that did not scan multiple pages into the memory from the glass. For anyone keeping this unit and doing the "work around" just hope your ADF doesn't fry! CRITICAL FAX FEATURE THAT HAS EXISTED FOR A VERY LONG TIME IS MISSING FROM THIS MACHINE--BIG DISAPPOINTMENT. Lawyers, restaurant owners, hotels, party planners, mechanics, construction businesses, architects, students, government offices, designers, photographers, marketing departments, sales reps, beware!

Not great purchase
3 Star Review   By frangot on HP - Dec 4, 2010

Uses lots of ink. Keeps cleaning the printer head and checking the machiine. The first one stopped working after a few months. The carraige wouldn't work correctly. I got another one and this one also keeps cleaning the print head and checking the machine.

Best Printer I ever owned

Jam King
2 Star Review   By wwhunter on HP - Nov 26, 2010

HP is still having engineering problems on their double sided printing. Duplexers constantly jam and are not designed to allow removal of the jam. The self help jam instructions are almost laughable for they do not address the jams that really jams up the machine.

Slow startup - otherwise good
4 Star Review   By SMB100 on HP - Nov 17, 2010

Product was fairly easy to get the running, including the software setup. The ink doesnt seem to last as long as they state, but I am not counting the pages so maybe it does. The biggest issue I have with the printer is that it takes several minutes before it is ready to print. Just dont expect to run into the office to quickly print out a document, not going to happen. One other small issue is that the device comes on whenever a phone call comes in regardless of whether it is a fax or just plane voice. If I could change one thing, I would want the ability to print 11x17.

3 Star Review   By super10 on HP - Nov 12, 2010

I previously owned a 7780 Officejet pro. This is supposed to be the new improved replacement model. I was told it is faster. Not true. Much slower to first page out. Slower printing than old model. I would not buy it again and wish i could take it back. Not worth the money.

Wonderful
4 Star Review   By conifir on HP - Nov 12, 2010

Works very well, happy with my purchase. Only drawback, won't print with Photoshop Elements 9.0, but will print with Photoshop Elements 7.0 and with Photoshop CS5. Maybe HP needs to find a print driver that works with PSE 9.0. But all other functions work well, no complaints with this printer other than the above mentioned problem.

Sturdy machine
4 Star Review   By DirtDog55 on HP - Nov 11, 2010

I really like printer. I use it for fun and home based business. It has performed like an ox when I have printed 7 copies of 60+ page report which contained charts and over 40 photos. It does pause at times and give a "wainting for ink to dry warning". I have had on/off connection issues with wireless, but I feel ATT is to blame since other wireless devices are also dropping off. The OCR function does an amazing job. It has helped me recreate detail drawings and maps easily. Only other issue is to allign paper when loading. I had a small corner tear off and it took 2 days to find so printer would work. I bought unit at Office Depot and after 6 months began having extreme degredation on color prints - only legible if I did "best" setting and used ink fast. I contacted CS - they trouble shooted and decided that printhead was defective. I received new head - at NO COST - in 2 days. Instructions included phone no. to tech who walked me through exchange and they tested print quality. Great job HP on support.

Waited to review
5 Star Review   By Gambrills on HP - Nov 11, 2010

I did not review this product untill we had it for 2 months. We are running 5 wireless computers (3x Win 7 , 2x Win XP). Installation: XP was quick with no errors. Win 7 had a few hiccups. If you encounter one, erase your installion and re install. Make sure the printer is NOT in sleep mode when you install. Functions: All is working well including the 2 sided document feeder and 2 sided page printer. Ink: It usues a fair amount but not wasteful. We have gone through mostly the black. I still have not replaced any of the color ones. The copies are very sharp. Wedo not use it for photos often. The ones we have done are great.

Excellent value and feature full
5 Star Review   By Moojo06 on HP - Nov 10, 2010

I just received the 8500 Pro A-910 E-All in one 2 days ago and I must say after careful research and the usual trepidation of paying almost twice as much as I have spent in the past for an all in one printer, I am emphatically happy I made the leap. This unit is the best printer I have ever owned and I have owned many including Epson, Cannon and HP. The text and graphics results are excellent for an inkjet and the speed is more than adequate for most casual office needs. The installation of the wireless was simple and much better than most I have experienced in the past including HP. The ePrinting from my iPad was simple and perfect the first time, printing from my iMac Snow Leopard & Windows 7 PC's was painless and the web apps are really cool. To have so many options to print wirelessly from any platform as well as walking up to the unit like a copier/scanner and performing whatever function I need is simple and flexible. You do need a sturdy piece of furniture for the unit or you can definitely get some shaking but it looks so nice in my home office that it deserves to have a nice tabletop. My wife and kids love the web based apps that allow you to quickly print various forms like shopping lists, to do lists, the weather report, kids stuff including an origami type characters as well as recipes and other interesting things. My only complaint is that it is difficult to correctly setup the web based features, if not impossible by reading the Quick Start Guide. You need to download the Users manual and it will provide about everything you need to know. Also, it took the unit a while to recognize it needed to update over the internet and until then we did not even have the usual familiar copy, scan options available on the lcd screen. Once that took place however, everything was simple and surprisingly effective. In fact, I installed the cd on a win 7 laptop and the installation was disrupted by my child. Usually to uninstall the software and reinstall would have been a nightmare often in the past requiring you to delete registry settings in XP, the process of uninstalling and reinstalling from the CD worked flawlessly. I am very happy with my purchase thus far and shocked at how cool this unit is. I would definitely recommend it.

Only had one problem
4 Star Review   By Accountant on HP - Nov 9, 2010

I really like this all in one. The only problem that I have had is the paper feeder. It wouldn't feed the paper and then it would say that we needed to load more paper but there was paper in it. I think that the rollers must have been too slick to pull the paper and there is not a paper guide to keep the paper from sliding backwards. I think that the paper tray should also have a paper stop or guide to keep the paper from slipping back in the tray. Unlike other HP printers the paper in the paper tray doesn't butt up to the edge of the paper on the tray end there is 1 inch or so gap between the paper and the paper tray. It seems that after a few months of use we no longer have the issue with the paper not wanting to feed so with this issue solved the printer is GREAT. Copier, document feeder, scanner, email, fax all work great now. I worked with customer service several times on the issue but didn't get any real help from them. I always seemed to get someone that I couldn't understand.

Worst HP printer I ever had
1 Star Review   By Abduct on HP - Nov 6, 2010

I am an HP fan, and have always purchased HP products without hesitation;however, this has been the worst experience with a printer I have ever had. The original printer was returned after 2 days for exchange from the store. A month later, worked with HP several times but eventually they had to replaceb it due to same problems. Printer will not respond (goes off-line). Even had the hibernation turned off but still won't respond to the computer, and can't be turned off even with the power button. It has to have the power pulled from behind if left unused for over 24 hours. Thinks the paper tray is empty after printing 2-3 sheets. Photos are terrible, has line marks through pictures when printed. Really a disappointment. Be careful if you're thinking about this one!

Still have some problems with it
4 Star Review   By AuntMimi on HP - Nov 5, 2010

I purchased this printer in anticipation of buying a new laptop. Once I got the new computer with Windows7, I discovered the printer setup CD was not for Windows7 and I had to download the software compatible with my computer. Two times since, the computer stopped working wirelessly and I have had to uninstall the printer and then download the software again. It is very aggravating. It is also very noisy when printing. At least I know it is working when I hear the noise.

The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly
2 Star Review   By Maysie on HP - Nov 5, 2010

We have used an 8500 wireless in our home office for many months and have been quite happy with the performance. As we are now establishing community offices, it seemed the logical choice to stay with a proven product. Unfortunately it has been a horrible experiences. The original purchase has been replaced twice by HP and we are awaiting new printheads to try to get the third printer working. The time spent on the phone with technicians, setup efforts, return shipments, and massive quantities of consumed ink have taken a toll on our patience and profitability. Over a month into this and we have not had one day of a working printer in our second office! As a small business, the time, energy, and money spent on this process is simply unacceptable. We have numerous HP products, but will certainly look more strongly at competitors for our next business purchase. As business consultants and networkers we also have lost our faith in referring others to the HP product line.

Nice Printer but wireless is poor
3 Star Review   By TommyM on HP - Nov 5, 2010

Printer has great features but to keep the wireless working I have to re-install the software nearly once a week. I also have a wireless 8100 and they may be confusing each other. In the begining the "wireless scan to the PC" used to work really well. Now it will only scan to a memory card even after I re-istall the software again. I have only had the printer for 5 months. I wish it worked better as a wireless printer, I do like the print quality.

Good Value, but poor paper handling
3 Star Review   By Anonymous on HP - Oct 27, 2010

The printer is fast, the ink usage is better than other printers I've used, the fax features are good. The frustration lies in the paper handling. There's no way around it: to print an envelope requires removing the paper output tray, unloading all the paper from the paper supply tray, readjusting the paper guides, printing the envelope then reversing the whole process. In other words, this printer lacks a bypass tray to conveniently feed envelopes, photo paper, labels or anything you may want to feed on a temporary basis. It's really a nuisance when it comes to printing small items (like a single check or small sheet of labels). Rather than simply inserting the small paper into a convenient bypass tray, you have to go through the above process. That really slows productivity.

GREAT PRINTER, GREAT FEATURES, POOR CARTRIDGE REPL
4 Star Review   By GANANA on HP - Oct 16, 2010

This printer has great quality print, great features, but I HATE THE WAY HP TRIES TO GET YOU TO ORDER PRINT CARTRIDGES EVERY TIME YOU REPLACE A CARTRIDGE. I HAVE TO TURN OFF THE PRINTER AND RESTART IT TO GET IT TO CONTINUE TO PRINT. OTHER HP PRINTERS THAT I HAVE HAD IN THE PAST JUST THANKED YOU FOR USING A GENUINE HP CARTRIDGE. I have always used HP ink and printers, but wished there was a way to stop the printer from trying to force you to buy a replacement cartridge every time you have to replace one.

Hesitation in purchsing
4 Star Review   By lakeman1970 on HP - Oct 15, 2010

I purchased this printer almost 2 weeks ago. I used the enclosed disk to download the progam into my computer. It got to 96% and then stopped the download and said there was a fatal error during install. The program then brings up an error program to help resolve the problem. The problem was not resolved. I have Vista on my computer and the printer is Vista compatible. But the error message says install error Vista. I've been on the phone with HP 4 times now and 12 days later the printer is still not downloaded. They say they'll call me back after they research the problem, and I never hear from them again! The printer looks like it will do a great job of printing and copying, but so far it doesn't!! It has great features and the controls are very easy to use. I just can't get them to work yet! Be caution in purchasing this if you have Vista on your computer!

Intelligent Purchase
5 Star Review   By JazzMann88 on HP - Oct 8, 2010

This was most likely the best buy for me to date, once my operating system was corrercted, the printer really showed me what it was worth. To date the printer has performed quite well, the ability to print only what you want from "Any Web Page" is refreshing, and it's saved ink and time and money.

Frustrating Printer
1 Star Review   By SueM on HP - Oct 8, 2010

I used to own 3- HPG85 that were awesome (office, home, daughter). This printer is the absolute pits. It jams more than it prints and continually looses the wireless connection. I spend more time dealing with problems with the printer than printing. My insurance agent has the same printer and said the same thing. It's great when it works but its always a struggle with the jams and wireless. The printing is fast and high quality. The operation is what is terrible. Go back to the old HP G85. Far more reliable.

Bought this product back in Sept 2010. I researched it on-line prior to purchase, being especially interested in the negative comments. While some of them almost dissuaded me, I'm glad I made the purchase. Some of the negative comments appear to be operator-oriented, not product-oriented.

Top notch All-in one
5 Star Review   By EndUser on HP - Sep 24, 2010

I have owned this 8500 + wireless for over a year now, and I have found the unit to be very good at its job. Setup was easy but a bit lengthy due to multiple PC platforms which needed to be completely cleared of prior drivers for an HP 6500, before installation of the 8500 drivers in order to avert operational anomalies. I have run the 8500 in stand-alone wireless, and Ethernet configuration (For security reasons), and have noticed only a minor speed reduction in the Wireless configuration. Ink usage can be reduced by setting the printer to draft & black ink cartridge default configuration. I have used this all-in-one for College since I purchased it. I replaced the original standard ink cartridges after eleven month of moderate to heavy use. I recommend purchasing the extra capacity cartridges as a cost savings feature as well!, especially when they go on sale. Just a note: I don't work for HP, and having said that, I would recommend caution when using other than HP ink. I have talked with others who have used refilled cartridges in the past, and some have had spotty luck with refills at best. I am pleased with the 8500, and I am looking forward to the same reliable service it has given me so far, for years to come. I hope this is helpful. Personally: I think this one is a keeper By gosh! {:< )

Paper Jamming Problem
1 Star Review   By Importer on HP - Sep 22, 2010

DO NOT BUY THIS PRINTER! You will have to stand at the printer and push the paper in order to print. Very frustrating, jams constantly, called HP on one occasion with no resolution. The printer always senses that there is no paper and no matter what amount we put in, there is always that issue. We are actually surprised when it prints the first time! It's been replaced - we only use it to scan or fax now. And it was an expensive printer!

Great Printer!!
5 Star Review   By Talker on HP - Sep 18, 2010

I have had my HP OfficeJet Pro 8500 Wireless for a little over a year now and it performs just like the day I bought it. It seems to take a little longer when cleaning printheads, but the wait is worth it as it does an excellent job. I am an online student and so a lot of printing and faxing. While I have always been a fan of HP, this is the best printer I have ever had. I buy the XL ink cartridges and they last forever, plus I can get them recycled!! I would highly recommend this printer to anyone willing to spend the money for it.

Problem
1 Star Review   By Anonymous on HP - Sep 6, 2010

I experienced the blue ink cartridge draining out of the machine. I put a new HP cartridge blue on Friday with no use over the weekend, by Monday it was empty. ( I did this twice thinking that maybe the cartridge was defective.) After the machine drained out the 2nd cartridge (XL) I got on the chat with a tech support person. Went through a bunch of things -no fix. I was told that I was 34 days out of warranty-too bad.

Good Machine, but Windows Vista is the Problem

The software finally finished loading on the Vista computer after the computer was rebooted several days later(it was rebooted sveral times during the installation process as suggested by the HP Help tream, but did not work).

Great functions
4 Star Review   By Anonymous on HP - Sep 3, 2010

This item was purchased to replace a HP7680 all in one that was a few years old and the features on this machine are great compared to the old model. The touch screen is simple to use and makes it easy to do everything right from the printer. The new function which lets you send an incoming fax to your email is great for times when you are out of the office. My only complaint is that I get paper jams if I put more than about 20 sheets of paper in the tray.

Product is used with 2 windows laptops (winxp and win7) and is primary unit for iMac Desktop (OS X 10.6.4). As always, could be faster but is comparable to my other printer (Canon MP810). Color inks produce great images on both plain and Photo paper. XL cartridges are reasonably economical. Black and white printing using infinitesimal fonts is amazing! [Had problem when scanning or copying using autofeeder from day one. After trying all HP suggestions to correct without success - HP provided a replacement. Works perfectly. Highly recommend HPs process for handling my support requests!]

A Very Good Machine
5 Star Review   By Evie on HP - Sep 3, 2010

I have owned HP computers and printers for many years. Very satisfied with every one of them. This Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless printer is excellent. I'm no computer genius, and have never hooked up any of my network connections by myself before. I did with this and without any problems - just followed the instructions. It works from all the computers in the house. I have used HP laser and other inkjets printers and have gone back to inkjet because this machine is so fast, prints very well. I don't use the fax and scan features all that much, but they work well.

Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless
5 Star Review   By pajbirk on HP - Sep 3, 2010

So far the printer has perfomed near flawlessly. The only problem I had so far is the doc feeder jammed when I placed several paged in it, though the pages had previously been stapled and a bit folded so I won't hold it against the feeder completely. The only thing I wish this printer had was the ability to scan slides as some of the other aio printers do. Print quality and speed are fine. Ink is a bit pricey though I managed to find it on sale.

The scanning software is a joke! Then I found I could use different programs I had such as paint that at least allows me to scan now. The set up was a week of night mare but finally got things to all work but you best be on your toes and watch it as though it was your 3 year old in a store. If I was smart I would have sent it back long ago but now it is past time to allow this option and I always think I can fix anything so I was stubborn and took on the challenge. I'm doing a direct mail campaign at the moment and I made sure I had plenty of ink on hand because if just one out of 5 ink cartridges go out. It shuts you down until you replace it and they are expensive. Just look away and spend your money some where else or be stuck like me.

HP Officejet Pro Wireless
4 Star Review   By Gregorius on HP - Sep 3, 2010

Does everything quite well including double sided and auto doc feed. Since it is wireless and chooses its own IP address periodically it becomes another device that is not recognized by other network computers. This is especially true now that I have two 8500 pro wireless, they switch addresses so I have to guess which one is in use. I didn't have the trouble installing like some others have had and the noise and slight shake is not a problem at all and no worse than other printers. All in all, I made a good choice.

Our last HP lasted 7 years and was a work horse. So far I am seeing the same results. The only draw back is the cost of ink, although the cartridges do last a long time.

The only problem I've had is after installing both printers to my laptop, the printer at work seems to have lost the capability to use the image controls on the touch screen - tells me to troubleshoot as it can no longer identify my laptop computer name. I have a work-a-round - start the image process from the laptop...just not as easy as it used to be from the printer. Otherwise a great printer/scanner/fax.

HP Printers & Support - no Help
1 Star Review   By FormerHPFan1000 on HP - Sep 1, 2010

I purchased an HP ALL-In-One for nearly $500. It worked until I changed the COLOR Cartridge. I replaced with a factory new & sealed HP Cartridge - the unit flashed "check the Color Cartridge". I replaced with another - same message. The whole device wouldn't work. a quick on-line check reavealed this a common problem - a spring breaks in the Cartridge holder . . . and punctures the circut near the ink cartrige holders. There was a PHOTO showing what this looks like. I got a flashlight and checked mine . . . it looked just like the photo! There were HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS online for this design defect . . . but apparently HP will not support, what looks like a design defect. Now my $500.00 device is worthless.

Excellent small business machine
4 Star Review   By tmommy on HP - Aug 26, 2010

If you have a small home business this machine is for you! You can do absolutely everything. I needed to upgrade from the stand alone fax as my business is growing and I deal with a lot of paper/faxes/emails/scans. The machine is my #1 employee!! It works wonderfully, ink lasts long ( I get the XL) and I've had no real technical issues. The cleaning print head gets on my nerves a bit and sometimes when I'm receiving faxes the fax will pull one blank sheet first and then pull another when it begins printing. Not sure what thats about but I just recycle. A great value for the small business owner or just personal use!

I love this printer
5 Star Review   By TheStraightUp on HP - Aug 19, 2010

Here's the straight up...after reading the reviews I was scared to death I would get one that made high pitched noises all the time or be subjected to extremely loud operating noises or have to buy ink cartridges every time I blinked my eyes but this printer had all the features I wanted so I took the plunge. I bought it at Costco after checking with the "Returns" Area and they assured me that if anything was wrong with it they would give me my money back with no hassels. Costco had the best price and all the people were great to deal with. I got it home, read the instructions before I hooked it up (just like the directions said to do), followed the easy to understand instructions, and had absolutely no problems at all. The instructions said it would take several minutes, and it did, the instructions said it would make clicking sounds during calabration, and it did. The bottom line here...follow the instructions and you won't have any problems.....try to be a smartguy and think you can speedup the process and try to jump ahead...then reap what you sow. After the setup, every feature worked perfectly ( I do not use the Fax ). I expected it to print fast, but it was even faster than I thought. I'm still impressed with how fast it prints and the print is crystal clear whether it's small, large, black or color. The Copy and Scan features are not ultra fast nor are they slow, they work exactly as expected and work perfectly. Whatever it put in to Scan or Copy, is exactly what comes out...no mis-interpretations. I love this printer. It does exactly what they say it will do and does it beautifully. The reviews made me afraid it would use ink quickly, so I bought high capacity cartridges so I would be prepared. Well, I've printed a bunch of documents and a whole bunch of 5x7 pictures (it prints pictures beautifully...use Kodak "Gloss" paper...it produces the best pictures) and I'm still waiting for the (non-high-capacity) cartridges that came with the printer to need replacing. I love everything about this printer. It goes to sleep well and wakes up well, also. My compliments to HP....you provided a product that does exactly what you say it would.

Good, but frustrating
4 Star Review   By bossqueen on HP - Aug 14, 2010

This is HP's remake of a similar moel with lots of problems...This one has it's share, too. I have purcahsed for 2 for the office and 1 is a replacemet for home. I have had to replace one of the 2 in the office twice within the first year. The fax aspect died both times. The one in my home repeatedly goes through a "check" mode while you stand staring at it while it tells you to not open any covers or doors while it is checking. The home unit is a warranty replacement for the previously defunct older model and may be a refurbished unit itself. I have not been able to figure out 2 or 3 of the buttons that appear as though i would use them alot, but there seems to be no simple setup (email, and scan). It seems much slower than the advertized speed and i have yet to have the 2 sided copier work effectivley without jamming. Probably worth it for the cost (if you can get it on sale), but speed, irritability, tech knowledge requirements are drawbacks.

Inconsistent Printer
3 Star Review   By SmallBizOwner on HP - Aug 7, 2010

Have only had HP printers for the last 15+ years.I love them, but not this one. I've been disappointed with this model. Had to return it shortly after purchase because it repeatedly malfunctioned. It still does. The paper feed continues to jam too easily when printing, the scanner feature isn't working, again, and it "stalls" frequently when printing directly from the internet and then won't delete the item in que which blocks anything else from printing. I've had this problem whether I ran XP or Office 2007. I like HP a lot, but I'm not impressed with this printer for my small business.

Disappointment
2 Star Review   By FrankF on HP - Aug 7, 2010

I expected more from an HP product. Envelope printing requires removal of paper in tray and envelopes are not always centered. Frequent jams when trying to use double sided printing. Scan to document is a problem because it sees my PC on the network but will not create a document.

MOST RELIABLE PRINTER I EVER PURCHASED

Disappointed
2 Star Review   By Anonymous on HP - Aug 7, 2010

On the plus side: - Fast printing (after the long warmup) - Print quality is good - Fax works well - Two-sided priinting works well - Wireless printing works well (on Vista laptop) On the minus side: - Will not install completely under XP, so many features are unavailable - Noisy - Many self checks - Often won't pick up paper from tray - Eats ink

very good all in one
4 Star Review   By JerryL on HP - Aug 6, 2010

A very good printer, except I have a problem with the feeding of blank paper. I have to take the paper reserve out and in several times before it will feed. Another problem is that the printer goes off line and I have to go in and restart the print spooler. Sometimes the printer does the initial setup, as if I have just installed it.

Great Printer
5 Star Review   By jdawgbarrie on HP - Aug 6, 2010

I absolutely love this All in One. I run my small business off of it and find that it works seamlessly. I use it on my wireless network with 3 different laptops. It helps me centralize my printing. I use its automatic duplexing to save money on paper and I did the math on my previous printer and this new piece paid for itself in the first 12 months when I use the XL inks. Scan to email is a function I use daily that I didn't think I would. Its easy to use, intuitive and effecient with its large touch screen.

Not Recommended
3 Star Review   By padreislander on HP - Jul 30, 2010

I have had good success with HP printers in the past. Unfortunately, the Officejet Pro 8500 All-in-One has not lived up to that lineage. It has a nice feature set and when it works properly, it is a nice printer. BUT... It has jammed numerous times with different kinds of printer paper, including HP paper. In fact, I had to have it replaced under warranty because it jammed so badly it would not work properly any more. The replacement unit has had its own jamming problems too. In addition, it loses the wireless connection. I have had to reset the printer a number of times and have even gone so far as doing a software reinstall. Bottom line, I cannot recommend this printer. It has been my worst HP purchase ever and a source of much frustration.

Awesome, while it worked.
2 Star Review   By NCFM80 on HP - Jul 21, 2010

I have had the 8500 Pro Wireless since March 2009, it is no July 2010 and it no longer works. From the beginning the top tray, for the originals, didn't function correctly for flipping 2-sided originals. Now the unit indicates a paper jam, while there is no jam (really) and instead of picking up/feeding a new sheet of printer paper it makes a grinding or clacking noise - sounds like gears. Out of warranty, brought it to Micro Center to get repaired & was told A. Micro Center does not repair printers and B. If it could be repaired it would cost as much or more than a new printer. I AM SORRY - THIS IS A $399.00 PRINTER (Ok-before rebate) THEREFOR IT IS WAY TOO EXPENSIVE TO BE A DISPOSABLE ITEM! JMO - NCFM80, L.I., N.Y.

Would not buy
1 Star Review   By K1234 on HP - Jul 17, 2010

I am in real estate and bought this all-in-one upon recommendation from local office store. I have always had HP printers and been very happy. However, after 2 months, I took it back as it would not feed the paper properly from either the bottom tray or the top when scanning or faxing. Another Realtor had the same problem; took her first one back, got another, and it did the same thing. She bought another brand and very happy now. Reviews I had read up to my purchase showed others experiencing the same problem. I would not buy this printer!

not happy
1 Star Review   By printerless on HP - Jul 15, 2010

21 days after I purchased this printer from Staples it broke. Called Staples and they said call HP....it's been more than 14 days. I called Hp and they replaced it under warranty. Charged me $30 in shipping to get a refurbished replacement. Received the replacement today and the front trim piece is missing....guess that's why it's refurbished. I should have bought the other printer I was looking at!

Works great on XP
5 Star Review   By nhoj on HP - Jul 10, 2010

This is my 6th HP printer in about 18 years. I have never had a problem with any of them! I only purchase HP printers because I have seen other peoples problems with competitors printers. The 2 sided printing really saves time and paper. The quality is second to none. It goes into sleep mode and wakes up in seconds. No complaints at all. I pass my older printers onto family members and they are all still in use.

Don't buy this printer
1 Star Review   By shsh on HP - Jul 9, 2010

There are many reasons to be disappointed in this printer, for example sometimes it thinks there isn't any paper in it but there is. The latest snafu that drives me crazy is that it will not accept a photo in portrait orientation even when that's what is chosen...it will accept the photo paper when inserted in landscape mode, but it tries to print it in portrait anyway. This is the straw that broke the camel's back for me. It's a real bummer and I'm stuck with this expensive piece of junk. Ah well...at least you can learn from my mistake.

printing problems

Awesome printer
5 Star Review   By dwar on HP - Jul 4, 2010

We had a HP Office Jet for many years and had to upgrade when we got new computers because it wasn't compatible with the new Windows. I have to say it's nice having a wireless printer and the printer itself prints great looking documents. It was also very easy to set up all the computers. Would highly recommend it.

Hardware better than software
4 Star Review   By LVGopher on HP - Jul 4, 2010

Hardware set-up pretty painless, although the print drive installation was not as easy as print cartridge installation. Big problem with software for scanning. Scanning would not work properly until I spent 90 min with HP support to remove printer software from old HP printer. It just shouldn't have to be so hard.

great features
4 Star Review   By pacal on HP - Jul 2, 2010

I owned a d135 for 7 years before buying the 8500. It is a bit noisy and takes some time at start-up but the features are excellent. The dual sided printing is great. The default normal mode saves ink, it is very energy efficient and the screen display looks like HD TV. It's an impressive printer. It took an hour or more to set up but no problems during set-up. My only real beef is the lack of a hard copy user's guide. That should be included with every unit. Looking things up online is a royal pain.

Great features, poor performance
2 Star Review   By EarthRabbit on HP - Jul 2, 2010

Great, but lacking a few things
4 Star Review   By Cabutler on HP - Jul 2, 2010

I like this printer especially since I do a lot of double-sided printing. The interface on the printer does not work for scanning, which you have to do from the PC. I was a little disappointed with that as I would like to be able to scan documents onto a card sometimes. Overall its a great printer and does what I need it to do.

Not for small office
1 Star Review

Strengths: Looks good

Weakness: Never ready, will not scan, will not take paper out of lower compartment, will not print on odd size paper

This one has never worked right since I got it. I have spent hours on calls and had to give up because they could not ever get it to work as it should. I made 2 mistakes: 1 was buying it from Staples and the other was buying it period. Had I bought it from Sam's I could have taken it back. I kept trying to get it to work and went past the 90 day warranty on soft wear, and now the warranty is almost up on the hardware, but they say it is a softwear problem.

5 Star Review   By LSC1858 on HP - Jun 29, 2010

Is there such a thing as ten (10) stars??**********. I give my 8500 just that. An easy set up for a guy like me. Have two offices a floor apart and works with perfectrion every time. I mostly buy my inks at COSTCO but have ordered from HP. I added the second paper tray and it works great too. It takes a little study to get to my desk top from the scan use. Have to go to paint/file/scanner-camera to get the transfer to copy.

Better than I Expected
5 Star Review   By Stretch on HP - Jun 14, 2010

When I recently needed to replace my 2 year old product manufactured by an HP competitor, I read all the internet comments and reviews I could to avoid buying another bad all-in-one device. Most of the machines out their had what I considered bad reviews including this one. Reviews suggested that this machine was, among other flaws, hard to set up and consumed a lot of ink. I disagree with all of the adverse comments. The machine was really simple to set up and operate all functions; I'm still running on the original cartridges. I am very satisfied to date.

First disappointment in HP
1 Star Review   By PDXTraveler on HP - Jun 14, 2010

Have had several hp printers/fax/scanners. Had to replace this unit via HP once. Still the same problems. Document feeder is not reliable. Sometimes faxes 3 of 4 pages. Sometimes copies 2 or 3 of 10 pages. Nothing good to say except I'm replacing a 3 month old printer for something reliable.

L7680
3 Star Review   By rw9999 on HP - Jun 13, 2010

My L7680 which looks like and has same features as the newer model. It is not what I expected. It uses just much ink as any other (promoted to be less expensive as a laser). The scanner does not scan in multi page document into one file like my old Brothers printer and it is slower on just about everything. The on top feeder jams frequently, Also, it does take up a lot of space. On the other side, It does have great color and black and white copies. It is easy to change the ink cartridges.

Third time is a charm
2 Star Review   By Elite80 on HP - Jun 12, 2010

I purchased my Officejet Pro 8500 Premier 909n in late December prior to completing my home office renovation. It sat in the box for one month prior to unpacking it and setting it up. Right out of the box it made a loud hissing sound when I plugged it in. I called support and they sent me a refurb machine 6 days later. I would have returned it to Office Max but it was after 30 days from the purchase. Out of the box the refurb unit malfunctioned. After an hour on the phone and another 6 days later I recieved a third maching. This time it was an Officejet Pro 8500 909g. This time it worked fine and has eversince, 5 months later. The features are great, but you risk poor quality hardware.

From 3 printers and 1 fax to 1 HP 8500
5 Star Review   By JoeF on HP - Jun 12, 2010

I used to have a spreadsheet for all the printer/fax models I had that included all the color and b/w ink reorder numbers needed to keep feeding all of these machines. It was costing hundreds/year. 3 months ago I decided to consolidate to just one machine that could do it all. The HP 8500 was the ticket. Set-up was a bit long for each computer, but was easy to do. The wireless feature of this printer worked very well connecting all 5 desktops and 1 laptop (MAC's and PC's) computers to print on one machine. I am already realizing the savings by only having to purchase ink for only one machine. The fax, scan, and double sided printing features all work very well. I've never experienced such ease printing pictures. The quality is top notch. I've only had two issues with the printer. Excessive paper jamming was occurring which required a reset of the printer and reinstallation of the software. The printer is also a bit noisy when idling. Other than that, the HP 8500 is a significant step forward for home printers.

Not for Small in Home Office
2 Star Review   By Boston on HP - Jun 12, 2010

I purchsed this unit because of others recommendations at the time. However, I should have paid closer attention to those who said the following: 1. It is a very noisy printer. Very noisy...don't ever shut it off especially if you work in the evening or early am and close to a bedroom. 2. The paper tray cover is a real stinker to place back on top of the tray. 3. Every once in a while, almost daily, while the unit is on, it goes through the start up mode and delays any printing. 4. Did they tell you there isn't a manual with this unit Why, becasue there are 300 pages to the thing.... 5. I would not recommend this unit unless you plan on placing it in your garage. If I were to get another HP, not likely, I would go with a very quiet one and have Best Buy and or your local vendor turn the unit on. It was overall a very poor choice

Officejet 8500 Wireless AIO
4 Star Review   By pkerry8 on HP - Jun 11, 2010

We;re really loving our new Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless AIO. We chose this printer because of a few of the functions that our other printers don't have: * Wireless Connection * Scan to Email or Files * Hi-Quality Color Photos * Large Capacity Ink Cartridges So far it's been great. I have found one of it's short comings i.e. I placed several pages in the ADF and set it up to scan @ 600dpi and sent them to my email. However, it wouldn't allow me to do this. I had to scan each page separately from the glass. This feature would be a great time saver. I wasn't to just change it back to the 300 dpi, it actually lost all the information that I had entered and I had to start over again from the beginning. This was dissappointing. I'm sure there will be other things as I use it more but I'm still happy just being able to scan to email/files.
