1 Star Review

Weakness: Very slowUses lots of inkHinges are flimsyScanning is poor at best

When this printer works, it prints very slow. Sometimes, it even pauses in the middle of a print to let the ink dry. It also uses tons of ink. The XL cartridges claim that you can get 1000 pages, but that seems highly suspicious. The scanner was even slower than the printing, but it was passable when it worked. It now only scans pages as completely black. I tried reinstalling and resetting the printer to no avail. The hinges that hold the printer in place are very flimsy. Don't break them or the printer won't work. If the top is not completely closed, you only get an error message telling you to close the lid. Of course, the only time you need to lift the cover is when you replace the cartridges. And last, but not least, when logging off my computer, I often get an error that one of the hp exe files that interface with the printer is not responding. After spending another couple minutes telling it to force quit, I am finally able to log off.

Slow, slow, slow
2 Star Review   By member hmusgrove - Jan 8, 2010

Strengths: wireless capability, price

Weakness: everything is slow, and color ink HAS to be replaced when it runs out (will not even print in black without color ink).

This printer may do a lot of things, but it is so slow that it is almost not worth it. I have had it for almost a year and rarely use it.

Great features and use for simple network
4 Star Review   By Frankj740 on HP - Aug 6, 2009

The all-in-one print, scan, fax, copy features work very well. Set up is easy only if your network is simple, meaning one router, or direct USB. Once you try and change around connections from network to USB, or to use several wireless routers, the capabilities are very limited to non-existent. Best bet is set up your simple network, and don't change it, otherwise you may need to spend several hours troubleshooting and reinstalling.

5 Star Review   By mzim on HP - Jul 28, 2009

I have had no problems with this printer.....in use for 4 months. Printed many pictures with very nice quality thats hard to discern from photo store pictures. Its speed is noticeably quicker than ALL printers Ive EVER had (about a dozen now over the years). Setup was simple. I would definately recommend this printer to the casual user and even small office users. Its that fast.

INK is killing me!!
4 Star Review   By boys2 on HP - Jul 27, 2009

I love the printer and all of its features. BUT, I have never seen an all in one printer that burns the ink like this one. I have it manually set to Fast Draft and always prompt it to use the economy level of ink. I don't understand how it burns so much ink up. I usually print in gray scale and the tricolor still runs out as quickly as the black. Not sure if anyone else can complain about this, but HP, please fix the burn ink rate on these machines!!!!!

Faxing not at easy at it looked
4 Star Review   By Opinionated on HP - Jul 1, 2009

It took sometime to get the 4 in 1 installed and working because of problems with the phone line. Once the alarm Co. re-installed the that system the phone line cleared and we were set. or so I thought. I really like the new 4 in 1, but have sofar one problem in faxing - Can't seem to figure out how to get the confirmation of fax sent to work yet. But have downloaded the manual and hope to find the solution today. It is a good peice of equipment and has replaced three other peices of equipment that had been in this small office. So I am really pleased with it and expected a learning curve - it was just extended because of the problems with the phone and alarm lines.

Don't buy for the scanner
2 Star Review   By FrustratedScanner on HP - Jun 26, 2009

The scanner is the slowest I have ever used! It often crops scanned pages so the whole image doesn't appear and scanning slows down my whole computer. If it weren't for the wifi function, I would return this all-in-one. Our office needs multiple users to use the machine so wifi is essential. Print quality is great, but boy does this machine eat ink! thankfully we don't use this machine for everyday printing Copy function is fast for an all-in-one, and print speed is decent. Haven't had a chance to use the fax feature yet. Maybe that will be this machines saving grace.

Sucks The Ink
3 Star Review   By vickifun on HP - Jun 24, 2009

I have had this machine 2 weeks and have used 2 black ink cartridges and 2 tri-color ink cartridges plus have used the ones that came with the machine. I have never had a printer that used this much ink. Previous printer connected to the same computer would only go through a set of toner cartridges once a month. This is crazy. I printed a series of black ink only documents and watched the level of color ink being used as much as the black. Why?

ink ink and more ink
2 Star Review   By DonnaC on HP - Jun 21, 2009

I bought this printer to replace an older "All in One" printer to work wirelessly instead on a USB cord, thinking that it would be similar in performance but I was wrong! This printer has all the features of a great office/photo printer but it is VERY slow and uses SO MUCH INK!!! I have to replace the expensive ink cartridges almost every week and I don't even print photos with it! I am disappointed in this printer and will have to replace it. I do not recommend this model.

My favorite HP printer
5 Star Review   By Anonymous on HP - Jun 11, 2009

My employer purchased this printer for my use, and I was so impressed with its performance that I purchased one for my personal use at home. Setting up this printer was incredibly easy, even for someone who is not that technologically savvy. This printer will do everything! It is a printer, scanner, copier, and fax. It is also functions flawlessly on a wireless network. You can use your laptop in one room and have the printer set up in a closet if you'd like. Scan photographs and documents, make personal copies, and have documents faxed to you all with this one machine. It will print on both sides automatically without having to print odd-numbered pages first and stand at the printer to wait to turn them over to print the even sides. The printer also shows the status of your cartridges on both the printer itself as well as on the computer. (If, however, you use a print cartridge in one printer and then transfer it to another, it will not give you a status but a question mark. The cartridge will still work, but you will not know how much ink you have left. I learned this when I used a printer cartridge at work and then brought it home.) As others have suggested, it is a better investment to purchase the XL cartridges, both 74XL and 75XL. They are more expensive and last much longer than the standard sizes. If you use standard cartridges, I very strongly recommend keeping a spare black cartridge on hand because I promise you that it will run dry at the most critical moment when you desperately need one. Because of the printer's ability to "drink the ink," I felt compelled to knock off one star. This is my ONLY complaint about this printer. I have owned several HP printers, and I was satisfied with all of them. This one, however, is the best one I have ever used, and it was worth the investment I made in it. If you purchase this printer, you will be amazed at all the features it has for the price. You will not be sorry that you purchased this printer!

4 Star Review   By JDTexas on HP - Jun 8, 2009

This is an excellent printer. Wireless works flawlessly. My only complaint is the amout of ink used. This baby can burn through ink cartridges when printing usual home/office type documents. Don't even think about printing photos without having extra cartridges on hand. Otherwise an excellent product.

Worry Free Wireless
5 Star Review   By KBuggs on HP - Jun 7, 2009

I am not exactly what you would call an expert, for someone who isn't very technical, the set up was easy. Sure I had to read the instructions a few times -but- it was to make sure that I was understanding the instructions correctly. Wireless set up was easy. I am now enjoying the benefits of printing without being tied down by a cable. This printer is awesome. I would reccomend this product to anyone rather you are a beginner or a pro, the set up it easy! Thanks HP!

More of a Web site thing
4 Star Review   By Analogkidd on HP - Jun 2, 2009

Since this thing takes the HP 99 photo cartridge, might be a good idea to list it under the "Cartidges" or "accessories" section of the product information page in addition to the 75, 75XL, 75 and 75XL. Just sayin'. I had to dig all over the place to find the right photo cartridge number when it should have been easy to find right here.

Have had 4 other AIO's in the last couple of years & have not been impressed at all! I bought one of these for my home and one for my office also. I lve these things! They are fast, wireless is great, 2 sided capaility save tons of paper too! Definitely recommend using the XL cartridges...they save time & $ over all. Had a problem with getting wireless to work but called up tech support, they logged into my system & got everything going for me while offering very courteous service!

Home Office Printer
5 Star Review   By Revg43 on HP - Apr 24, 2009

The 6480 is a terrific printer for home or office. My other hp printer was not vista compatible and I needed a new one. Loading the software was very easy. The only problem I encountered was hooking up the phone lines to my fax. You have to use the phone cord that comes with the unit or it WILL NOT WORK. I do recomened using the 74XL and 75XL cartriges. The regular 74 & 75 is not good for large printing projects. Overall, you have a winner!!!

Great AIO for Home or Office
5 Star Review   By SFPrin61 on HP - Apr 20, 2009

This is a great AIO printer for the Home or Office environment. I bought this printer because of the wireless and FAX capabilities and was not disappointed. The set-up was easy and fast. It interfaces without any problem from my desktop PC to my Mac laptop which is something that was very important to me. The only negative comments I have was that I had to install the printer software twice due to a conflict with my old HP printer drivers and the overall amount of ink is used. I recommend using the XL ink cartridges to work around this problem. A big plus is that the printer holds twice as much paper than most in this cost range; great advantage when printing a large project. I highly recommend this printer and feel that the negatives are something that can be corrected through more draft printing and technical understanding.

Great little all purpose machine
5 Star Review   By Anonymous on HP - Apr 18, 2009

I need copy, fax, and scanning on occasion. This little machine installed without a problem I use it on a USB port. Also, I have my phone attached to an answering machine. But, following the instructions in the manual, the setup worked without a problem. For my everyday printing needs I use the laserjet P2055dn. Both run on my new Vista 64 machine, the pavilion elite m9600t. Just great stuff, highly recommended.

J6480 - 1 year Review
4 Star Review   By apmc on HP - Apr 16, 2009

I've been using this printer for 1 year. For the price you can't beat it. XL cartridges are the way to go. Scanner is loud but works great once you get the quircky software installed under vista.] Wireless connection is tricky. Use the wizard in the printer when setting up. Printer is acting up and wants to align the cartridge on a frequent basis. So I don't know if this is a serious problem. Glad I have the 2 year extended warranty.

Officejet J6480 All-In-One Printer
4 Star Review   By member darnwalt31 - Apr 10, 2009

Strengths: Does everything it is advertised to do.

Weakness: Difficult to set up because software was apparently corrupted.

Superior tech support to complete setup after spending a couple of hours trying to set it up from a corrupt disc that came with the new printer. After HP tech deleted all the files from my attempted installation and re-installed the software online, the J6480 works perfectly, except that I cannot use the fax function on my single phone line because my voice mail picks up incoming fax tone. Was told to either drop voice mail or get dedicated line. Am looking into magicJack to act as dedicated line.

Poor Printer
2 Star Review   By member Ironfist69 - Apr 8, 2009

Strengths: Easy to change Ink Carts - because you will do it frequently. Another strength it was packaged very well. It sends FAXes well.

Weakness: Corrupt software, very slow, small cap ink carts (by design I'm sure)

Most companies strive to better previous year models. HP has gotten worse this printer is or has got to be the most ignorant piece of crap they have unleashed on the public. I don't think this unit is a Lemon it has been changed out twice because the first two units were D.O.A. Am very displeased with this unit, and will have to avoid HP the next time I need a printer. HP's ink carts are costly and don't last very long with low to average home use. I know HP can do better than this monstrousity.

OfficeJet 6480
5 Star Review   By mnreale on HP - Apr 7, 2009

Bought this product three days ago. Had an older HP all-in-one that was not Mac compatible, which I'd had it for about 6 years which I really liked, but once I got a Mac, printing became a hassle. Finally got fed up with all the blank sheets it kept spitting out every time I had to print one sheet of paper. Now I'm very glad that I did. The 6480 was easy to set up and it works like a dream.

The worst PRINTER I have ever bought from HP
3 Star Review   By jong on HP - Apr 6, 2009

I have been a loyal customer for HP printers and have always owned HP. I bought this to take care of all my needs, to have a fax at home and the ability to make copies. All of these things work - all but the printer. It PAPER JAMS every time I try to print. The main reason to have a printer is TO PRINT. I want to get rid of this printer as soon as possible - if anyone here wants one - call me and you can get it cheap. It will only give you a pain in the neck - with a paper jam to go along with it. Actually I would not want anyone else to have the problem I have had. Pass on this one.

Best All-In-One Around
5 Star Review   By Worldwidechase on HP - Mar 31, 2009

I love my new all-in-one. My other printer got distroyed by some weekend visitors. I was looking for another all-in-one I found this one for a great price. The features cannot be beat. It is fast and the quality of prints is excellent. Great for a home office and the Wifi is very convienent. I have no complaints about this product. I am a loyal HP customer and would recommend this one over any printer.

Nice printer
4 Star Review   By George12345 on HP - Mar 31, 2009

We really like tis printer. We use it in our home office and bought it because of the wireless feature. We use an older all in one in our business office and wanted a wireless for the home office. We do not use it for faxes though as we have a stand alone unit at both places. Because of the way it scans and prints ( and because it is curently on sale ) we just ordered another one. We use the scan feature a lot and also use fast printing feature most of the time. Set up was quick and easy.

Avoid this dog
2 Star Review   By Ladycop on HP - Mar 27, 2009

I have always purchased HP printers and computers and been happy with their quality. I bought this model for the wireless feature and have been wildly unsuccessful trying to sinc it with my desktop or laptop. I have installed unintalled and reinstalled the software numerous times and am really disappointed by the performance of this machine. The printer blows through these teeny tiny cartridges like water too. Avoid this awful printer like the plague.

Good machine, yet causes slow boot up
4 Star Review   By littledave on HP - Mar 26, 2009

This is a good machine. It does what it is supposed to do. Slight complaint: A little on the noisy, squeaky side when in operation. My computer boots up with no delay without the software installed for this device. Which gives me my worst complaint: After I installed the software for the device, it always takes over two minutes for my compter to boot up now. Eventually, the icon for the printer pops up in the task bar and the wait is over.

HP J6480 All-In-One Printer-Scanner-Copier-Fax
5 Star Review   By member meganzack - Mar 24, 2009

Strengths: Easy set-up, very convenient wireless, all-in-one unit.

Weakness: Haven't found any so far.

I've only had this printer-scanner-copier-fax machine for a few weeks, and have not had any problems. It's quick, easy, and quiet. Set up was a breeze, even for the fax machine part of it. I hear scare stories about fax machines every day from my company's customers, and I was worried about doing it. No problem; I just followed the instructions, plugged it into my cable company's Digital Voice phone jack, and it was good to go!

What a Work Horse!
5 Star Review   By Hardworkinggal on HP - Mar 15, 2009

Due to the failurre of my 9 yr old Panasonic fax machine, I decided to upgrade and get a printer that incorrporated that feature. I took it out of the box, set it up, and put it straight to work. No problems connecting to my D-Link wireless router. No problems with software installation, even on my tiny netbbook! The duplexing feature worked awesome making 2 sided brochures with HP brochure paper. Photos have been fantastic when you use the optional HP 99 photo cartridge in place of the black...saves on the Tricolor cartridge too To save iink, when I'm using "Fast Normal" as the pritnt quality in my printer settiitngs.. I find the print quality quite acceptable and it slows down ink usage. Overall, we're thrilled with this AIO and would recommend it to others without hesitation!

Uses too much ink
3 Star Review   By RitaS on HP - Mar 11, 2009

This printer is really awsome.....but it uses toooooo much ink. I have to replace the cartridge every two weeks. I have had several hp printers in the past and they never used ink like this model does. It does a great job but I can't afford the ink.

My review of the HP J6480.
5 Star Review   By Russ Burchfield on Buydig.com - Mar 7, 2009

Strengths: Supports Wireless, USB, and standard wire lan. Scanning is very good for the normal user. Faxing is excellent.

Weakness: Ink cartridges are a little pricey.

I have been using this printer for 2 1/2 weeks now. I find that it is a lot quiter then my 10 year old HP 912C Ink Jet. After installing the drivers on a laptop. The drivers look for the printer before the wireless lan comes up. After 1-2 minutes, everything is fine. I would buy this printer again.

I purchased a "refurbished" one of these and it is great. I have been looking for a scanner and I got this for $20 cheaper than the cheapest scanner I had looked at, and it has all of the other features. Works great and was easy to set up with my Vista notebook."Wi-Fi" almost set itself up.

Very Nice
4 Star Review   By doug85243 on HP - Mar 4, 2009

I had a HP 7400 Model and I loved it. I then had to replace it. I called HP and they said this was the one all most the same to what I had . I was looking at a cheaper one but after talking to them I bought what they said I should. I am glad I did. It is very good printer and for photos, it is EXCELLENT. There is only one thing I do not like with it is that it is noise is louder then I would like. My HP 7400 was real nice with little to no noise. I hope HP reads this and work on the only problem. Overall I will tell everyone to buy it !!!! All so I have had it about 1 month.

I have the HP J6480 all in one. I have had no trouble with set up or operation. The manuals could be arranged in a more concise manor. It fits my space limits and is as quiet as any other printer. Card reader works and the wireless works with a laptop and router. I would buy it again.

5 Star Review   By Anonymous on HP - Feb 25, 2009

I couldn't be happier with this product. Very easy to setup; the features for the price make it a great fit for serious home office users and people like myself who have multiple computers and users in the house. It has everything I was looking for in a printer: wireless print, fax, scan, copy, print photos via memory card or through my computer. It has all of that with a small foot print.

It is very good
4 Star Review   By Webster on HP - Feb 20, 2009

I have had this printer for several days and find it does everything well. ( I have not yet tried the fax.) This printer is the quality I have come to expect from HP, having used HP printers for 10 years. I would have liked it if the sped was a little faster and less noisy. It has preformed well with all the functions I have used. The 2 sided printing is great. At $120.00 this is a great buy.

Smears and leaves lines occasionally blank
2 Star Review   By ZMDZ on HP - Feb 17, 2009

I got this printer yesterday and put in a new ink cartridge immediately. Features seem like a great deal for the buck but when you try to print it leaves lines out every 4-5 pages. It also smears ink as if you didn't wait long enough for it to dry before touching. But this is as it comes out. Ridiculous. I'm returning it tomorrow. You get what you pay for.

Great Buy for All the Features!
4 Star Review   By CLE78 on HP - Feb 17, 2009

I recently purchased the J6480 on sale for $119.99. (President's Day Sale). The Features are awesome for the price. Excellent for computer sharing. Love the wireless networking. Becarefull if you have Vista. I've spent a lot time during set up. Thankfully for HP Techs and five hours of waiting I'm up and running. I have Vista Home Premium and the software wouldn't install from the CD. HP Tech help installed software through a work-around. Now I've had start-up issues with my computer from all the computer setting changes. Thanks HP. Still will recommend the printer...b/c All the Features for Low Price.

Quick, easy, smooth
5 Star Review   By Bronia on HP - Feb 15, 2009

This printer installed so smoothly and easily. I made sure to turn off virus product as instructed ( turned it back on after printer installation)and the printer was up and running within 12 to 15 minutes. I have used all the components and it works like a charm. Faxing is a breeze as is scanning. I had always had trouble scanning and faxing with an older model hp all in one, but this works great.

love the printer sharing
5 Star Review   By blueeyedgal on HP - Feb 12, 2009

I gave this 5 stars across the board because I have had no problems with it. It is easy to set up. It is also very easy to set up to a windows vista computer, as the second or third computer to print, the computer finds the drivers and such and you dont even have to put in disc. I also love the two sided feature, it works great, I usually waste so much paper because maybe a line or two doesnt fit on the first page. I like how it shows you the ink level estimates left. I am just impressed with this printer. I love wi-fi.

HP J6480 All-In-One printer
3 Star Review   By Anonymous on HP - Feb 6, 2009

I am sad to say that I am very disappointed in this model HP printer. The features are great and printer works as promissed. The print quality is not as clear as my old model #5510. This printer #6480 uses an extreme amount of cartridges for the number of copies printed. I changed to the 74XL cartridge which has helped the life of the cartridge, but is more costly. I regret to say that I would not recommend this copier for small business use, maybe home office only if you make limited copies per year. I wish I had my HP #5510 back!

Great Printer Service
5 Star Review   By gdm13 on HP - Jan 30, 2009

I also purchased the printer on sale Jan 23 for 149.00. Great Bargin! I have it connected to a desktop and also wireless to my laptop. No problem with the desktop setup. The laptop I had major difficulties. THIS WAS NO FAULT OF THE HP PRINTER. The person who set my linksys router put in some restrictions that I was not aware of, or fully understood. I calles the HP 800 number and found the GREATEAST HELP from the tech support people They were patient and committed to solve the problem. After searching many avenues, the wireless routing settings were checked, reset and all works fine. I would have not known why my laptop was receiving properly a signal from the router, but not the printer. Now all is fine and I am enjoying sharing the printer with the desktop locarted in another room.

Slow and inaccurate
1 Star Review   By Disappointed1000 on HP - Jan 9, 2009

I tried to shop around and find a printer that was good and reliable. I read reviews for this particular printer and thought that it'd be a good pick. When I got the printer I was at first satisfied with my decision, then a week later it started to give me problems. I installed it as a wireless printer and sometimes when I try printing a page, it doesn't print, sometimes it will give me an error message, and other times it will actually print, but not the way that the preview shows. I am completely disappointed in this printer and would NEVER recommend this to anyone or any business.

Great all-in-one!
5 Star Review   By br729 on HP - Jan 7, 2009

I purchased this to replace my Officejet 7210 all-in-one. This new one is so much quieter, and I love the wireless cabability. It was a snap to set up all the functions on all 3 of my machines... 2 notebooks and 1 desktop. I highly recommend this printer.. Just 1 comment on the ink. If you do a lot of document printing, most definitely purchase the XL sizes of black and/or color inks.

5 Star Review   By kit1 on HP - Jan 2, 2009

I researched lots of printers including other HP models but the this J6480 on sale from HP at 149.99 was too great to pass up. I looked at the lower line models and they just did not seem to be built as sturdy as this one in person. Anyway, it does all its functions as expected with the quality I have come to love from HP. Note. I had an all day ordeal getting the wireless to work. The problem was with my linksys router/firmware configurations. The softwear did not for me anyway confiigure things automatically. After a lot of trial and error all is working now. I would recommend this printer/scanner/fax maachine any day of the week.

Not enough to recommend
3 Star Review   By costconscious on HP - Jan 2, 2009

Having purchased this machine as a replacement for an HP product that had trouble with scanning, I am disapointed. 1. The amount of ink it uses, even in draft mode, is outrageous. No where near what is advertized. I would not recommend or purchase this machine again for this reason alone and have gone back to the one I tried to replace for everything except scanning. 2. The menu set up. Much more trouble to go through the display than to use the buttons on the front of the machine. 3. Don't think the picture quality is as good as advertized. Saw pictures on a different, less expensive, HP printer the other day that are superior to this one.

I am sad to say that I am really disappointed in this printer. I don't believe it has earned the privalege to have the Energy Star sticker on it. Ours didn't power down as we were led to believe it would. I am a big fan of HP all of our printer needs have been met by you. Perhaps timing is everything - the concept is awsome but the technology just isn't there yet. A real bargain
5 Star Review   By Fogbound on HP - Dec 11, 2008

I too read the reviews and was concerned. I am replacing an HP 6110 All-in One. I bought the J6480 because it has wireless capability the 6110 lacks. I have two Mac laptops running OS X and one PC laptop running Windows XP all working with the 6480. In all three cases the wireless feature almost installed itself. It was a breeze. It did take me a while to figure out that the operator's manual is in the software. Once found it is very helpful.

Networking Capability
4 Star Review   By Anonymous on HP - Nov 12, 2008

This product has been great! Although I would warn you if you are buying this for its ability for wireless networking, please make sure you are not going to upgrade your network to 802.11n in the very near future or if you are currently running WPA or WPA2 for your security because it is not compatible. Now I have not looked into weather or not you can buy a external nic to plug into the USB or RJ-45 connection spots on the back, but not sure it would work that way or not. Check into that first because if you spend some money upgrading your wireless network the 802.11n or your security to WPA or WPA2 it is not compatible. If you find a way to do it, post how you did it.

Documentation leaves a lot to be desired...
4 Star Review   By Jazper007 on HP - Oct 26, 2008

I love the printer but I have not been able to get it to print wirelessly. I ended up connecting it to my router via cat 5 Ethernet cable... and I did not read how to set it up because there is nothing in the documentation on how to do this... I just figured it out... there is also very little about how to set up the printer to print wirelessly. If you are a novice, do not expect to print though your router wired or wireless without calling their tech line. I am happy with the printer but it could have been 5 stars with a good "complete" instruction manual.

Officejet J6480 All-In-One Printer
3 Star Review   By member stevencraig - Oct 20, 2008

Strengths: Wireless low cost

Weakness: Harder to setup

You would think that with a wireless printer, you could set it up wirelessly. Not so, you'll go through the usb setup and then wirless is available. Not so straight forward at that. I also seem to have issues if the printer has been unplugged or the power goes off, it can't be found easily by my computers afterwards. Nice that it has so much to offer at a reasonable price. I'd probably buy again, but perhaps HP will improve on these issues; at which point I would give them a higher rating. Cheers.

Great Overall Ink Thirsty
5 Star Review   By PleasedNovice on HP - Oct 14, 2008

Great machine, easy to use and install (Although with my experience and using Vista 64 bit, I had to default to HP 990 printer for it to work properly) Speed is good. You'll want to go for the extra capacity ink cartrdiges and make sure you change the quality to 1 star (can go up to 3 ***), which you really don't need since the base 1 star does a great job for everyday printing and will save you ink. The scan speed and ease of use are nice improvements over the previous all in ones we have had. The wireless feature works well and the duplex print, while a bit slow, is a nice touch and a good paper saver.

Returned after 4 days
1 Star Review   By Bud6 on HP - Oct 14, 2008

I looked at the reviews on line and decided I would go for it. Set up was not fun. After 2 hours of trying to get it to work wirelessly, I finally called in help from a professional. I could not get the fax on a shared line to work properly and lost a whole day of calls. (Not good in today's economy.) Due to what I believe is a design flaw, paper did not feed straight on almost every print job. There is no end paper guide, only on the sides. From the first copy, it gave us problems. Also, regardless of what margins my daughter had set on her paper for school, it cut off the top of the page. Printing checks for a business, was a disaster. The first check printed fine, then the next one did not feed right, after that, it would just start printing the next check not anywhere near where the printing should have been. I would not have been able to use any window envelopes. I restarted the print job and printed them 1 by 1, not fun. I am returning it to upgrade to the L7780, which I should have gone with in the first place. The price was just not worth the hassle. I would not recommend this printer even for home use. Pay more money and get a better product. I do however still believe in HP products.

Poor Fax
2 Star Review   By JLDS on HP - Oct 7, 2008

DO NOT PURCHASE THIS PRODUCT IF YOU NEED TO SEND FACSIMILE TRANSMISSIONS. I have had this product for about 3 weeks, buying it on the recommendation of the high ratings it had from reviews of previous buyers. It has successfully faxed a document on the first attempt on one occasion since I purchased it. Often times it takes ten or more attempts to fax something and many times it completely fails and I have to find another avenue to send my documents. The paper feeder often draws documents unevenly and they have to be straightened out. It prints and copies no where near as fast as advertised and it is agonizingly slow in printing envelopes. Print quality is OK but the printer cartridges get used up fairly quickly. I would NOT recommend this product to anyone.

New Home Office Printer
5 Star Review   By BoSCBeach on HP - Oct 1, 2008

The Printer does very good work overall. The features are a big plus for a home office environment. I would recommend using the the 74 XL Black Cartridge. It prints almost three times the number of pages as the standard 74 cartridge. The LX is about the twice the cost of the standard cartridge. I have gotten only 100 to 125 copies from the standard cartridge. That is not much for use in a small business. The price of the printer is very reasonable for the features and quality.

I have had this printer for two weeks. We have three computers in the house and have been able to hook all of the up wirelessly to this printer through the router. The software takes a long time to install but it worked with no problems. I have even been able to print from my blackberry which is cool. I have two complaints about the printer. First, the scanner is loud and slow but does a good job. Louder than my last printer. Second, i can't seem to figure out how or when this printer hibernates. It seems to have its own mind. Overall, this is a good printer for the price and features. I love being able to have access to this printer regardless of what computer is on or using it.

Download the Software
4 Star Review   By DanA on HP - Aug 26, 2008

Had major problems with the installation. As other reviewers have stated I ended up having to download the installation software from HP's website. On a fast computer total installation time is about 20 minutes, so be patient. I loaded the software on my PC and my laptop...laptop installation was a breeze. Love the print quality and all of the features. One thing to remember...the printer needs to be "on" at all times! When the printer is off there is no wireless connection therefor the computer cannot communicate with the printer. The printer goes into a power save mode but maintains wireless connectivity. This may be something everyone else is aware of but this being my first experience with wireless I just didn't think about it at first. I needed fax capability so this is why I went with this unit. This all in one replaces a HP flat bed scanner and a HP photo quality printer. Once you get past the installation you will love this printer!

HP J6480
5 Star Review   By lgscott5053 on HP - Aug 20, 2008

Having had this all-in-one in operation for over a month now I have to say it's great. It has surpassed my expectations. I have used it with all three of my computers, two wirelessly, without a hitch. My luck with HP printers has been great.

Setting up printing over WiFi does not work
2 Star Review   By alg863 on HP - Aug 14, 2008

The main reason I bought this printer was so that I could use the WiFi feature. However, I followed all instructions and though printing worked just fine over USB the configuration program just couldn't detect the same printer so that I could configure it for WiFi operation (it kept prompting me to connect the printer over USB)! I used the configuration utility that came with the CD and I also checked online updates to make sure that I had the latest version. I am now stuck; if the printer does not work over WiFi I just don't really need the printer...

Does the Job
4 Star Review   By Aubie on HP - Aug 14, 2008

Not the smallest, not the fastest and certainly not the quietest. But even at $150 it does everything well. Set up with two XP laptops over a Linksys router with WPA security was a breeze. Box open to scanning and printing wirelessly was about 45 minutes. No problems just dealing with all the packaging and the automated portions of the install took a little longer than I expected, but again no problems. Print quality is as advertised complete with double-sided option. It adds to footprint, but worth it in my opinion. Scanning is what I really got this machine for and it did not disappoint. File size tends to be big. I don't know what the machines at my office do to get scanned docs down to less than 100kb, but I haven't seen this happen on any other scanners either so I don't knock this one for its large file sizes. Only real surprise was that it was pretty noisy. My wife complained from the next room over. I know inkjets tend to be noisy, but even the scanning was loud. Only 4 stars because it only did what I expected it to. No good surprises, but no bad ones either and that is definitely better than average in the electronics world.

Great Printer
5 Star Review   By piscis on HP - Aug 6, 2008

This is my second office jet, I used to have a 6100xi. But the J6480 is the best printer I have. It is quiet, reliable and the wireless option is a plus. I have a small office network and this printer has been a great add to my network. If you are looking to get a multipurpose printer this is the best option to go for it.

Better than some reviews indicated
5 Star Review   By BillP on HP - Jul 28, 2008

I had read that some people had had trouble with this model, primarily with the software. It was suggested that you should download the operating suite and driver software from here, so I did. It installed flawlessly, I've been able to print photos from programs like Photosuite, scan enlarge and print again photographs with great results and the color copies are great looking. Wireless connecting was a snap and I'm very pleased with the printer. A great All-In-One at a very good price. The only feature that I've not tried since receiving it today is the Fax. So far no complaints. It even set the clock automatically once it was linked to the computer.

Looks Good - Feature Packed
4 Star Review   By MugsyD on HP - Jul 27, 2008

I just purchased the J6480. I am using it at home for my school teacher wife and high school kids. It’s overkill for them but I got a pretty good deal and it is a feature packed device. B&W printing, copying and scanning are high on our needs. Color printing and faxing are not that critical but very nice to have. I’m not looking for exceptional print quality. I just want a device that is going to hold up for the next 3 – 5 years. I am running Vista Home Premium. So far I am impressed with the device. It looks great and seems to be laid out very nicely. It’s kind of noisy but so is the rest of my house. Set up went smooth. I took my time and followed the directions to the letter. I did not rush it or take any type of short cut. I have connected the printer to my internal home network switch and have all my kids PC’s connected to it via IP (my house is wired). That was fairly easy to do too. It’s nice to be able to access the printer web based configuration page from any PC in the house. This is the 3rd HP printer I have purchased over the past 10 years with each increasing in features and quality. I’ve been happy with them except for toner costs. . I hope toner cost does not put me in the poor house.

Does it all ... and well!
4 Star Review   By drkc on HP - Jul 11, 2008

I use this printer for a home office. Speed is great, print quality is excellent! This printer replaced an OfficeJet K80 and is much better, in every way. Only drawback is that the printer cartridges run out incredibly fast - even the XL versions don't seem to last very long.

Practical printer
4 Star Review   By member kidkalamazoo - Jun 24, 2008

Strengths: Priced affordably Relatively small footprint Better ink system than the competition It's wireless and can be put out of the way Installation was a breeze on an existing wireless network

Weakness: None found as of yet

I bought this printer to replace a 5 yr. old bulky, ink-pricey Lexmark all-in-one that had stopped working. The J6480 was on sale and we've been wanting to go wireless to free up room on the desk/counter. So far everything is working as advertised. I was printing wirelessly within 15 minutes of installing the HP software. I would recommend this printer to anyone who is running a small home office such as myself.

do not buy (or anything HP)
1 Star Review

Strengths: wifi

Weakness: tech support

Over the past couple weeks, I have had the worst customer experience I can ever imagine. I bought an officeject j6480 and ever since installing the enormous software driver, my internet explorer crashes and restarts when I try to close it. Also, I can't scan using the printer. I have twice called technical support. After suffering through the huge phone tree and initially being told by the voice system that HP doesn't provide voice support for the product (why, not, if the product causes problems on my computer, shouldn't support be provided?), I called back, went through most of the tree and then hit 0 about 20 times repeatedly to get to a rep. Then, the first time I was on with a rep, he said he would call me Monday at 8a to work through the problems as well as email some solutions to me (I was driving, so we couldn't troubleshoot at the time). As we were wrapping up the conversation, we got disconnected. I am not sure if the disconnect was because of my cell phone or the bad internet voice connection to India or both. However, the rep had my phone number and in good customer service organizations that I am used to, they call back on a disconnect. No immediate call back. No email with support information. And, no call at 8a on Monday (or anytime, for that matter). So, I just tried again today, Friday. Again, gave my phone number. Again, unfortunately got disconnected. Again, no call back. So now, I am faced with a choice. Do I brave the phone tree and huge headache to potentially get disconnected? Do I wait a week to maybe get a call back? Do I give it all up and throw the printer in the bay (and uninstall the software) since I am unfortunately past my return period while I have been struggling to make the printer work? Full disclosure: I have Vista (don't buy that either). But, this isn't so much about the specific problem as much as the techinical support troubles.

Nice AIO, Wireless is great!
5 Star Review   By karsey on HP - Jun 16, 2008

We use this printer with 5 computers on a home network. So far, have had no problems with printing or scanning. Duplex printing works great. Haven't tried fax yet. Fast normal print provides excellent quality while saving on ink. Color photos are excellent. Printer is FAST, FAST, FAST! Did have some problems with bringing up Solution Center, but they seem to be resolved with the help of tech support and some independent research. Really appreciate the wireless capability, as computers are scattered throughout the house, and the J6480 is sitting in a different room than the router. Have had no problems with connectivity. Would recommend for home network or small office. Good product with an attractive price.
