I really think this printer is awesome when printing on regular 8 1/2 x 11. I have major problems printing envelops, especially if I have to print more than one at a time.

Excellent results on text and images. When considering print capacity, laser cartridges are probably no more expensive that inkjet. If they are, quality makes up for any difference.

The Wonders of LaserJet
5 Star Review   By asinger on HP - Mar 6, 2008

I own and have owned several printers over the years, some HP and some not. I have always like HP because of their quality in every category. I tell everyone about it, from the color to the hassle-free printing, technology, and outstanding perfomance that this product exhibits. This definetely deserves two thumbs up!!

Not a bad printer
3 Star Review   By earguy on HP - Nov 10, 2007

If you can get past the tremendously expensive ink cartridges ($84 each on average), this is a good printer. The color is very high quality and crisp. Again, becasue of cartridge expense, we limit the use of this printer to only special printing needs in small quantities.

Decent Color Laser Printer at a good price
4 Star Review   By member rusblue - Sep 28, 2007

Strengths: Prints excellent quality laser sheets - very pleased

Weakness: a little bulky and slightly expensive toner cartridge

I was expecting fairly good print and color quality for the price ... I am happy In my case, I found this printer to be MORE than acceptable for home use. If you are looking for a nice reliable color laser printer for home use this is it. The footprint is large, but the print quality is fantastic. I compared the sample sheets to sample sheets of other color laser printers of the same class and the brightness, sharpness, and clarity blows the competition away. The toner is slightly expensive. But you can get it refilled. Overall a very good printer.

CLJ 1600 - Functional Hardware, Dysfunctional Software
5 Star Review   By member elicabeta - Sep 7, 2007

Strengths: Prints fairly fast, High quality print jobs, Easy to set up.

Weakness: Randomly starts up to calibrate thus making a lot of noises, Software problems (could be an isolated issue).

When I got the HP Color LaserJet 1600, it was pretty much ready to be used. I just had to install the software, pull out some tapes from the printer and toner, and then plug in the printer at the software prompt. Very easy. It does not come with a printer cable, so you would have to buy that separately. It's modestly big, but I've never seen a small color laserjet either. The print quality is very nice, as expected. Just yesterday, I was cleaning the printer with a test page and the picture it printed out on regular paper looked amazingly real. It prints pretty fast, at least faster than my 7-year-old HP inkjet. So far, I only have 2 gripes about this printer. One is that it randomly starts calibrating on its own and making a lot of noises (that is, if you leave it on without using it). It makes you think that you accidentally clicked the print button and the printer was coughing out a print job, that kind of noise. My second gripe is the software. The software installs a toolbox application in which you can use to check your device status and supplies status, such as ink levels. You can also use the toolbox to do some printer configuration. I installed the toolbox onto my Vista Home Premium system and learned the hard way that the toolbox was not supported in Vista. There are printer drivers for Vista so this printer does work in Vista, just that the software part such as the toolbox application is not supported yet. Once I learned that, I try to uninstall the software and it won't let me. I also installed the toolbox application on my Windows XP system and directly connected the printer to it and all the functions work except for the Device Status and Supplies Status parts. I keep getting this HTTP400 error. I guess there is a problem with the software trying to get information from the printer. These are not major problems because you can get the same information manually from pressing the buttons on the printer itself. This printer uses 4 ink toners (HP Q6000A Black, HP Q6001A Cyan, HP Q6003A Magenta, HP Q6002A Yellow). If you run out of black, you only need to change the black ink toner; if you run out of cyan, you only need to change the cyan ink toner, you do not need to change them all. This is the good thing about having different color toners. Average retail price for the ink toners goes from about $75 for black to $83 for each of the colors. The black toner yields about 2,500 pages and the color toners yields about 2,000 pages. If you pay the average retail price for these ink toners, you're paying about $0.03/page for black toner and about $0.04/page for the color toners. I don't think that's too bad, it's cheaper than making copies. In fact, these numbers might even make you think before you print. One last thing to mention is that this is a host-based printer. I read about this in the HP Support forums which can be helpful if you have printer problems. It doesn't bother me that this is a host-based printer because the way I configured it, as long as it works, I'm pretty much happy with it. I have this printer hooked up to a computer that's part of a home network. Other computers in the home network can print from this shared printer as long as the computer that the printer is directed connected to is on. The downside of that is that sometimes the host computer is not on and when you're one of the other computers who want to print, you would need to turn on that host computer in order to print. I think there is a wireless printer server option for this printer but it didn't have good reviews. If you want a printer similar to this one but network-ready, go for the HP 2600n.

I have had my printer for just about a week. Was astounded at the print quailty, It is something that you have to experience to really believe. Great Product ...Very satisfied
4 Star Review   By member shalein - Jul 19, 2007

Strengths: Clarity , speed and performance

Weakness: Bulky, Noise and Friction while doing multiple page printouts

I thought of it as a starting point for printing the clor labelss to attaract my customers but now I am so used to it and that every form of business is invariably going through this piece of macinhery by Ho . I would love them for the finesse they are able to produce at this cost and especially thinking it as retail consumer product and not the one which gets showcased in those bulky high storeyed beuracratic offices and used as and whn needed rather than necessary. Would think that they could have easily combined the scanenr functions for a little extra price. but you can ask for more and be stingy at the same time.

Good home Color Laser
4 Star Review   By member h_c_i_a - Jul 19, 2007

Strengths: Good quality, small compared with other color laser

Weakness: Slow

This printer is a good home office printer. It is great for making color presentations and does not take up too much space. The cost per page is not too bad either. Only thing that could be better is if it was faster and higher resolution for printing pictures.

It was super easy for me to set up this printer. The color printing quality is excellent. The printing speed is also fast. The only problem is that you need space if you consider buying one. In addition to that, HP toner is always expensive.

Great value
4 Star Review   By member Fiscal Gear - Jul 2, 2007

Strengths: Price; quality business color

Weakness: Slow; photo quality not that great

Bought this printer for a little under $100 and I must say I'm very impressed at the value. It's a little slow, rated at 8ppm both color and b&w, but speed is not a big issue for me as I do not do that much SOHO printing. It takes about 20 seconds for the first page to print which may be long or short depending on what you're used to. The color quality is good for light accents or clipart on business documents, but do not count on this printer for photos as it does not deliver consistent color saturation. Also it is supposed to cost almost 16 cents for a color sheet so why not just get digital prints done right at your local drug store for only a penny or two more?

Strengths: color quality, print speed fast, good price

Weakness: very heavy,expensive toner

The quality of prints is excellent as expected from a color laser printer, easy to set up, I got it for $100 after coupon and rebate, which is a decent deal, overall, I would say it is worth $150, I would give it 4 stars

4 Star Review   By member bwambolt - Jun 26, 2007

Strengths: Print speed, easy set up

Weakness: Expensive toner replacements

The quality of prints is excellent as expected from a color laser printer. Set up was breeze. It is large however and is not a printer you'd want on your desktop. It is not network ready but this should not be expected at this price. Overall a very nice color laser printer.

Weakness: bulky and replacement toner cartriges are quite expensive

Strengths: Fast, cheap

Weakness: too heavy

This is a cheap color laser printer if with $150 rebate. Everything works fine. Printing is fast. It is very good for office, but not good for personal use. The toners are so expensive. Even the refill kits from ebay are also expensive.

4 Star Review   By member ppitono - May 25, 2007

Strengths: Great result, fast printing, high capacity paper tray, inexpensive

Weakness: not network ready, bulky

HP always makes good products and the HP 1600 laserjet color printer does not dissapoint. The color is very nice and the black and white is pretty sharp. Furthermore, with 6 separate cartridges which accessible through single door, it will result in ink saving over time. Last but not least, this printer is very quiet, which is very nice bonus compared to many other laser printer in the market.

I was given this printer as a gift. I orginally have a HP laserjet series II. I thought that was an exceptional printer until this one was plugged in, no comparison. We have it connected as a network printer for 3 computers and it handles everything we send it. Could not have been given a better give. Wish everyone could have the good fortune as I was.

Good Printer Overall, Just a Few Glitches
4 Star Review   By Erin on HP - May 1, 2007

We've had our printer for about 3 months now, and so far it's been working great. We really like the print quality. One thing to be aware of though is that some non-HP print cartridges do not work on this printer. (We got some non-HP cartridges, and they left gray streaks on the paper.) Also, the manual feed tray could be better. I've found that I can't send more than one piece of paper through the manual feed tray. If I try to send 2, the printer will grab both pieces of paper at once. I've also not had much success printing out envelopes. Admitedly, I didn't work at it very long, but I was a little disappointed that it wasn't easier. (I've done this before on other printers and not had as much trouble.)

Simple Design Makes Life Easier!
4 Star Review   By member AsianCharm - Apr 25, 2007

Strengths: Easy to assemble when out of box; easy to install or replace toner cartridges; paper jams are easy to fix; modest size and weight.

Weakness: Replacement toner cartridges are hideously expansive (over $320); doesn't work well with older software program like WordPerfect 6.1.

I had a Minolta Magicolor 2300W. In many ways, the Magicolor was a piece of junk: weight, size, incessant paper jams, excessive built-in drums and rollers. The machine was completely destroyed after I fed an Avery Address-Label Sheet as all the individual labels were scattered and stuck inside the machine. It was a holy mess! The situation was impossible to salvage. I ended up throwing the printer away. By comparison, the HP Color Laserjet 1600 design is really 100% better. There aren't excessive built-in rubber rollers, and all the drums are inside the toner cartridges, therefore less parts to be damaged. Paper jams are easy to fix due to its simple design. The toner cartridges are easy to take out and install. Best of all, it takes less than a minute to warm up and print out the first page. So far, I fed several Avery Address-Label Sheets into the printer, they all came out in one piece. I can see that this machine is going to last longer than the Minolta. The HP Color Laserjet is by no means a perfect machine. Last night, I tried to feed a 4"x9" envelope using the Wordpect 6.1 software. It fed successfully, but the printer absolutely refused to print. Then I switched the printing to Microsoft Works that came with Window XP, it worked probably only after I reconfigured the paper size as well as the percentage of printing. This is just pure cumbersone since one doesn't have to do that with the older Laserjet 4L when printing an envelope.

A quality laser printer
4 Star Review   By member flyhigh06 - Apr 24, 2007

Strengths: It outputs high quality prints

Weakness: it's heay and ink cartridge is expensive

This is a decent laser printer which produces high quality prints. The starter cartridge can use about 1000 pages. That's pretty good. Compared to other kinds of laser printers, its price is relatively low. It however is heavy about 42lbs and new ink cartridge is not cheap.

Laser In Review
5 Star Review   By fireplug1 on HP - Apr 21, 2007

This has to be the best LaserJet Printer for the cost. Priced at $299.00 it is an easy buy, and prints incredibly well to excellent. The only draw back is the amount of toner in a cartridge. If you print a lot of pages, it is worth it to tell the printer how many dpi to use, instead of using the best, or default mode for printing. Conserving toner does not impact printing quality and should be performed in all methods of printing, no matter what the layout is. Excellent LaserJet Printer and I highly recommend it, and as a publisher and editor I know my business!

Professional Color Laser at Home Office Prices
5 Star Review   By NancyMN on HP - Apr 21, 2007

I LOVE THIS PRODUCT!!! The print quality is pheonomenal. It was so easy to set up and start using. I run a small business, and my brochures (which I only print 5-10 at a time), look just as good or better than my friends who went to commerical sheet fed printers and had to order thousands at a time. From printing off a new recipe from the web, designing a presentation for my best client or making sales fliers and promotional pieces for business- you would never believe that my color laser printer was under $300. I have 3 children under 5, a home and business to run- I do not have time to worry about my equipment or make costly mistakes. HP has answered my prayers with this affordable printer, without cutting out the quality. Champange printer on beer budget- THANKS HP!!

Great Color Laser
5 Star Review   By djohn on HP - Apr 19, 2007

The 1600 is a great color laser at a good price. Print quality is high but there are no real options to increase or reduce quality as needed. So the nice web page printout takes as much toner as the picture you don't mind spending toner on. It's simple to use, simple to set up and very easy to change toner. The starter toner, which is less than a standard supply, lasted suprisingly long and I'm still on my first replacements. I have mine networked on a Keyspan server and it works flawlessly. Suggestion for improvement - handle thicker paper or card stock, hold more paper, allow competitor toner without genuine HP hip clones and the nag messages they generate. Looking for a quality main printer, fast, easy and inexpensive to run? Buy the 1600!

Plug & Play ??
4 Star Review   By sqman on HP - Apr 19, 2007

The only complaint that I have about this (and other HP printers that I have purchased) is the fact that if you plug the USB cable in while the computer is running, you are likely to blow out the printer. Any other USB device that I own can be plugged in while the computer is running -- but not HP printers!

it's okay
3 Star Review   By jeffeyntucson on HP - Apr 19, 2007

Honestly I use my in jet a bit more than my laser. I am a bit disappointed in the HP scanner I purchased not being user friendly and more compatible with the last printer. I am not getting copies to scan and print with the laser results I wanted. It's okay but really I find it only useful for items that I would do better to print on my inkjet then go copy in a Kinkos.

Printing is good.
5 Star Review   By Qaman on HP - Apr 19, 2007

Received my HP Laser Jet and had it set up in short order. Could hardly believe the quality of the print on relatively inexpensive paper. Have printed posters for our ministry which covered the sheet completely, looked as good as a professionally printed poster to me. Only problem I have had is that it apparently uses so much USB connection bandwidth that it causes my external hard drive to shutdown. Wish I could find a solution. Other than this one problem the printer works great.

great printer, excellent buy!
5 Star Review   By Frank6102 on HP - Apr 19, 2007

I have been using my Hewlett-Packard Color Laser Printer 1600 for several months. Color photographs are exceedingly well done, invitations and greeting cards are printed quickly and have that "store-bought finish". A great printer at any price, a steal at $300. The one thing I do not like is attempting to print addresses directly on envelopes. A small thing with so many labels available.

3 Star Review   By Beau on CompUPlus - Apr 16, 2007

Strengths: price

Weakness: price of ink Not compatible with windows vista

can't understand HP that a new printer does not have a Vista program or driver, will loose a lot of sales due to this. The Xp driver does the job but not the program

Great Print Out Quality
5 Star Review   By Hoz16735 on HP - Feb 28, 2007

We received our Color LaserJet 1600 in a very timely manner as described. The printer was up and running and printed out a test page within 15 minutes after having it out of the box and on the desk. The print quality is excellent even on plain paper. The only minor complaint that I could suggest is that the printer came with a setup sheet of instructions and had very few description words on it and just a lot of pictures. I think a better setup set of instructions might make it a little easier to understand and maybe less confusing for older people. Other than that, this printer has very good quality for the value. The software which had to be loaded on to the computer from a CD was pretty straight forward. The Software "ToolBox" is very helpful since it shows the pages used on the toner cartridges and how much of each toner is still remaining in each cartridge. This will come in handy since the price of the toner cartridges is somewhat high and this will help to monitor usage. I would recommend this printer to anyone looking for excellent printout quality for the value.

Warning about this product
1 Star Review   By Anonymous on HP - Feb 15, 2007

This product requires Host based rendering of print files. This means that many programs will not print images correctly to this printer. Ex. MS Powerpoint & Adobe photomanager. Only buy this product if you understand this and will be using software that is compatable. Due to this suprise I spent several hours trying to get to work until I contacted the HP Help.

Great Printer as long as you have standard paper..
3 Star Review   By Anonymous on HP - Jan 31, 2007

I love the 1600 colour laser printer - but it has a drawback I was not aware of before I bought it. Whilst standard 80g/m2 paper, plain white, is no problem to print on, when using relief paper or heavier paper (I tried using 160g/m2), it made horrible stains on the paper and printout quality was really bad. It seems the printer is not made for thicker / corrugated papers such as business cards and other card materials. Sad, otherwise it would indeed be my perfect little printer...

Hp hit a home run
5 Star Review   By Anonymous on HP - Jan 21, 2007

I work a lot in graphics cards, signed prints, and photos. The only piece of equipment that I used to reproduce my work was a Inkjet printer, some of the problems of matching color to out put was wasting a lot of paper. A friend suggested I use a Laser printer. I tried out the 1600 and was sold! I only suggest I you use a lot of diffrent papers to spend time setting the media settings to match the paper and you will be amazed at the results. Cost vs. Inkjet. 1600 comes out ahead. Only draw back is the restriction of paper size. Other then that a home run for production

HP Lover
4 Star Review   By Anonymous on HP - Nov 20, 2006

I like the print quality, but it performed self calibration so often and make me waking up from my relaxation. I try to move it away from my bed room, but I can't because it won't support the wireless print server.

BIG printer that works very well
5 Star Review   By member alanlieberman - Nov 3, 2006

Strengths: color quality, print speed (for home use), customer support, ease of setup and use

Weakness: cost per printed page (although that is true for almost every printer) and size (very tall) and size

There was a problem with the black cartridge that was delivered. One phone call to HP support isolated the problem and a new black cartridge was delivered the following day. Once the new cartridge arrived - the print has worked perfectly. Bright colors and crisp black - FAR superior to inkjet printing.

hp 1600
3 Star Review   By Anonymous on HP - Oct 27, 2006

I desperately needed a color printer that would print various sizes of envelopes.I saw this printer online and called and the salesperson told me that it would print 250 envelopes at a time. It won't do that. And it does not recognize various sizes of envelopes, such as greeting card envelopes. Its print quality is fine, but it does not meet the most critical need that I had when I bought it.

Review from Pink
5 Star Review   By Anonymous on HP - Oct 26, 2006

I love my printer. Just wish there had been some directions included. It's supposed to be on the disc, but I could not access it. But, when I called for help, the service was excellent. The quality of the pictures is excellent. Wish I could find sources for more laser labels and paper as well as business cards in various textures, etc. Also, I wish I had realized that there was the same printer only with wireless options as it's only been in my house for about 2 months and I would have spent the extra $50 for the wireless if someone along the way had told me.

Great Printer
5 Star Review   By Anonymous on HP - Oct 24, 2006

HP has always had a reputation for quality and reliability and the 1600 color LaserJet is no exception. It is extrememly easy to setup and the print quality is fantastic. I never thought I'd be able to afford a quality, color laserjet. Luckily for me, HP has combined a great printer with an affordable price. Go Get One!!

My Favorite Printer
5 Star Review   By Anonymous on HP - Oct 24, 2006

I have had several HP injet printers in the past, all of which have given me good service. I've always wanted a color laser printer because I had heard of the great print output and beautiful color they produced, although the cost at the time was prohibitive. When I finally saw the HP Color Laser Printer 1600 at the published price, and the color it produced in the sample documents, I could hardly believe my eyes. The colors are sharp and clear, and my page layouts look really great. This printer was worth the cost and more. This printer makes the colors I create in my page layout software outstanding. The printer set up was easy, the instructions were easy to follow, and the supplies and cartridges are easy to load and exchange. I'm am truly a happy laser printer owner.

HP Color LaserJet 1600 Printer
5 Star Review   By Anonymous on HP - Oct 24, 2006

I've wanted to get a color laser printer for some time, but the price kept it out of reach for us for quite some time. When I called HP customer service about a problem I was having with my very old (practically ancient) inkjet printer, they recommended this as a possible replacement. The price seemed right and it had all the features I was looking for. I don't do that much printing, but on ocassion, I need a printer that will produce professional looking brochures and pictures for a local animal rescue for which I do volunteer work. The speed and print quality is terrific! And I've already recommended it to several of my friends.
