Stylus Photo R800 Inkjet Printer (17 PPM, 5760x1440 DPI, Color, PC/Mac)
4 Star Review   By member prasadmk86 - Dec 12, 2009

Strengths: Speed

Weakness: As of now NO

It is good to buy and use. It has good speeding capacity to print the images with good quality. If we talk about its printing quality, it is good to print difficult/complex pictures.

beautiful photos, but a little slow and pricey
4 Star Review   By member scottegos2 - Aug 1, 2008

Strengths: great colors long photo life

Weakness: slow expensive

I bought this as a third printer -- I have a high speed b&w laser printer (the great e450dn) & a general purpose inkjet printer (the canaon ip4500) already. However, the colors for phto printing on the canon weren't quiiiite good enough. There are also concerns about the longevity of the dye based ink in the Canon. We bought this pigment-based printer, which has resolved those isssues. However, because it's a lot slower than the Canon and with much higher ink costs, it seems like a better supplemental printer than primary.

4 Star Review   By Turtlej on PageComputer - Oct 5, 2006

Strengths: Print quality is superb. I don't need to go to Walmart anymore for great digital prints. Prints cd's and DVD's as well.

Weakness: None experienced so far

I bought one about two years ago as I needed another printer for our companys cd's. I do about 9000 a year. Since it worked so well and I needed a faster turn around time, I bought another. I've also printed pictures on the 4 x 6 sheets of paper and quality is excellent. I put the pictures in direct sunlight and still have no major fading. I would however recommend using the EPSON high quality Ultra paper for prints as other papers, like Kodaks, seemed to take longer to dry and didn't lay as smooth.

Experinces with the Epson R800
4 Star Review   By member johnhawk - May 13, 2006

Strengths: Excellent printing quality - it`s very reliable .

Weakness: Ink costs !!!! It keeps on resetting the print settings .

Having used this printer for quite a few months , I can`t praise its photo output too highly - to my non-professional eyes its prints are uniformly excellent , and any duff results have always been due to bad settings on my part or some other cause not involving the printer . The main drawback is the ridiculous cost of the colour cartridges here in England - any American readers of this review who think they are hard done by should check out the comparative costs in England and the USA . A lesser annoyance is the printers habit of changing the settings you just used to print your latest masterpiece - on the very next attempt it has defaulted back to basic settings . I can`t help but feel that this is deliberate on the part of the manufacturers , but I wish they would us tell what purpose it serves .

R800
2 Star Review

Strengths: Everything minus the weakness

Weakness: Colour rendition

The photos I pring out have a slight colour shift, which I can not simply universally adjust by a given value of hue/saturation/brightness control because one set of values will provide good result on one photo, but will provide again false colours on another, therefore every photo needs its own colour adjustment in order to get a good rendition in the end. Tried it with custom profiles, colour rendition became excellent but skin colour transition became "digital", one shade of colour clicks over to another shade without transition.

Strengths: Review lists 8

Weakness: Only 6 are working at the same time.

I never understood how "clear" could be called a color. There are manufactures that actually do put more than 6 colors in the printer and can call themself 8 color printer NOT THIS ONE.

Stylus Photo R800 Inkjet Printer
3 Star Review   By member zipmale - Jan 11, 2006

Strengths: Ability to type on printable DVD, good quality pictures

Weakness: Expensive cartridges, running out of ink too quickly

I've been using my Epson r800 for 1.5 months mostly typing on printable DVDs. The quality of typing was pretty decent but unfortunately the typing surface was not water resistant so I had to protect my DVDs from wet fingers and liquid drops.

Strengths: Prints beautiful images.

Weakness: Poor build quality.

This printer prints beautifully. However, it is not very reliable. I have had to have repaired mine about 3 times. It was not too bad when they did they had the exchange policy. The last time I had to send it in for repairs the parts are still on back order and it has been about 3 weeks.

2 Star Review   By member annsnotecards - Apr 27, 2005

Strengths: Excellent color rendition

Weakness: Much difficulty feeding standard Avery note cards

The first one I purchased 2 weeks ago, died suddenly. I just setup the new one and find that it doesn't like feeding Avery Matte Ivory Embossed Note Cards - even though it did so fine last night. Now, it's a laborious process - one by one. I'm convinced that the paper feed mechanism is somewhat flawed. This is one area that is not addressed adequately in the printer reviews.

Strengths: easy to hook up; looks sleek, easy to work with printer options; quiet and solid running. on "best photo" and premium glossy paper, it printed the best picture i've seen thus far

Weakness: twice it just stopped printing and ran into some "error" duirng my first week of use. i'm not sure what this is about.

i chose this printer because i wanted the best digital photos possible and a specialized printer, meaning i did not want a fax, scanner or copier builit it. It costs a lot more than most printers on the shelf. I was willing to try this and see if it met my expectations. when i printed on epson premium glossy paper under the highest setting possible, it produced a spectacular picture. twice, however, during my first week of use, the printer froze on an error message and i'm not sure what this is about.

5 Star Review   By member gatorrock - Jun 1, 2004

Strengths: High print quality, fast for this quality, brilliant color on most paper types, best I've seen for a consumer level printer, especially on photo quality glossy paper.

Weakness: Demands to be default printer (changes itself to defualt consistantly), won't work if ANY ink is out, so must constantly have spare ink.

I have been using this printer in my genetics lab for over 2 months now and can say this is the best printer I've seen at a consumer level. The print quality of this machine is hard to beat. We print pictures of cell organelles to full people on this printer, using 2 megapixel microscope cameras up to the 13.89 megapixel Kodak DNS camera- the print quality never fails to impress. And when we use the high gloss photo paper, you would think we sent it to a photo lab. This printer is not without faults mind you, it does have a nasty habit of setting itself as the default printer. So you have to check that setting pretty often (but this maybe be a network issue). It also has it's own print software that pops up and tries to decide how to print pictures, which can be annoying if you don't turn it off. Finally it will go through certain colors quickly (cyan and yellow- in our case) and if you don't have replacement ink for the empties it won't work at all (even if you want strictly black text). So keep spares always handy. But outside of that I have no complaints. Other reviews have said for photographs it never does "bronzing"- I'll admit I don't know what that is, but I'm glad, by their reactions, that it doesn't. :) To give you an idea just how good this printer is, I'm now going to spend the extra money and buy one for myself at home for personal use. I'm generally a person that goes for the best cheap brand you can buy (Hey I'm a grad student- little money here), but this is a printer I know I'm going to get my money's worth out of.
