5 Star Review   By member XweAponX - Aug 14, 2004

Strengths: Works VERY well with just about all DVD Writing programs and I use this device to back up my DATA: And with NERO, ALL DVD content plays on MOST DVD players. Burns considerably better with DVD+R Media.

Weakness: NONE- A very good machine

Anyone who states that this unit is weak, probably does NOT know how to operate DVD Recording devices- And I would wager money on the fact that they do NOT have their computer system set up correctly: I would hate to see their systems, and the fact that they are only getting 2 gig burns proves that something is VERY wrong with their system. I have this unit installed on an Athlon XP 2400+ on an MSI KTV4 Motherboard with 768 333-DDR Ram. Maybe once or twice I get a buffer underrrun when Burning a DVD, but then again I am also running several programs at once. ALL of the movies I have backed up play beautifully on ALL DVD players I have played them on.. And this device is CRUCUAL to the backing up of my Music. I can make very large Cakewalk Bundles and store them ALL on ONE DVD. As I said: This unit burns DVD+R's a little bit better than -R's however, it handles -R's very well. If you 1) Keep your ASLP layer up to date... 2) Keep the FIRMWARE revisions Upto date, and finally 3) DO NOT USE cheap MEDIA: CHEAP MEDIA WILL make Coasters... If you buy a stack of 50 Cheap DVD-R's one out of every THREE has a BAD surface- I am talking about the special stacks they sell at places such as PC club. Also, the media is NOT 4X. I use Memorex 4x and ONLY memorex 4x +R media, I do not CHANGE. A DVD writer unit is the same as a car: If you run your car on a specific gasoline, your vehicle gets used to it: So I always buy the same DVD+R batches, and I have very little problems with this unit, and most problems I DO have, are problems that I have caused, because maybe I messed with the ASPI layer. It is critical that you use the most recent ASPI layer you can find, and that you also use ForceASPI to install it. I avoid certain programs that "take over the recording devices" for Windows XP- Suck as Roxio: Do NOT install Roxio Drag to Disk, it will RUIN your ASPI layer. The gentleman who was complaining how much of a waste of money his device is... I'll give him 50 for it flat out... I would LOVEW to have two of these things, I burn a LOT of DVD's I must have over a thousand burnt from this unit alone. Previous to This unit, I bought a Pioneer DVR-AO5: And THAT unit was what I consider worthless: Oh yes, it DID burn DVD's and yes, they DID play- On my machine, IN the unit that burned them, but in other computers, and in DVD players, the DVD-R Media did NOT read. I burnt 10 DVD's out of a pack of 10- and I got 10 coasters. That is what decided me on the Sony, and it's capacity to burn BOTH +R and -R And I have been VERY happy with this ever since.

Strengths: BURNS AT 4X NOW. NO COASTERS YET.

Weakness: ONLY THE SOFTWARE BUNDLE.

I BUILD AND REPAIR COMPUTERS DAILY. PROGRAM ALSO. THIS DRIVE IS THE BEST ON THE MARKET. I HAVE TESTED IT SEVERAL TIMES. IT HAS NOT FAILED YET! FIRMWARE UPGRADES ARE EASY TO INSTALL. THIS DRIVE DOES WHAT IT IS ADVERTISED TO DO. I JUST BROUGHT ANOTHER ONE, I RECOMMENDED IT TO MY CUSTOMERS. SONY ONLY NEED TO IMPROVE THE WEB SUPPORT PAGE.

Strengths: Burns all formats, very dependable, once you learn what you're trying to do.

Weakness: The only weakness that stands out is the inexperience of the user.

I purchased my machine mainly for transforming DivX and mpeg files into DVD movies. At first I had many problems and made several coasters. Like most people, I blamed it on the unit and did my share of cussing, but after doing some real research at DVD-R helpsites I learned that the process is much more complicated than just opening a file with Nero and clicking "burn". There is no one burning program that performs all the tasks you need done before creating a decent-quality DVD movie that you won't mind watching on a widescreen television monitor. Multiple programs are mandantory and you must have the patience to learn how to do it right. I now make a DVD almost every day, and I can't remember the last time I created a coaster. I consider my DRU500A a High-Quality piece of equipment and well worth every penny it cost me to buy it. Now I just wish the price of DVD+R media would go down! P.S. I use Verbatim DVD+R media. It's recommended by Sony, and reasonably priced, compared to the rest, if you buy the 50-pack. I found them at Best Buy.

Strengths: Variable ability for media

Weakness: 100% unreliable. It took MANY phone calls after it stopped working to get them to issue an RMA. They "repaired" it and sent it back -- it failed after four days.

I cannot believe how difficult it is to get support help from Sony. Long waits on hold and difficult to convince them that there's a problem. At the moment this drive is "toast" again and has cost $$ in destroyed "coasters".

I had to delete half the software on my computer to get the drive to work. Then the tech people told me I should only expect to get about 2 gig per disk. The tech support websites are a joke. Broken links and worse. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!!!

Strengths: Burns in all popular formats.

Weakness: A little picky about what media you use.

I purchased 2 of these drives a few months ago. At first I was very satisfied (several burns with no issues) But later after purchasing a test DVD-R pack I was a little disappointed that only one manufacturers disk (Ritek) burned consistently. Since then I have stuck to the Ritek media and have never failed a burn. All in all, pretty darn good product.

Strengths: reliability compatability

Weakness: bundled software

This burner is by far the best I have seen. after a couple days of testing it has performed at 110%. Not only did it burn 9/9 dvd+r's and 2/2 dvd+rw flawlessly it went 59/59 with the cdr media(cheap generics that have failed often in the past)and the reason I say 110% is after popping in about 5 of my cdrw's I had been using for various durations it found different types of errors left over from previous sessions with my old cdrw drive. I would recomend this to anyone looking to buy a solid product even thought the price is a bit high it is worth it in media alone. In mere hours i ran out of media not by making coasters this time but by reliable backups that i have testing in other drives to verify that they were in fact flawless

Strengths: Variety of DVD formats

Weakness: Software package

This is a great drive. I have thrown all 4 types of DVD media as well as CD's at it, and it works! No coasters, no hassle. I am still waiting to find 4x DVD media but that is not Sony's fault. (I'm still waiting to find 24x CD-RW and I've had THAT drive for 4 months. These drives are flying off the shelves because they are good drives. Installation was simple and if you have Nero you can burn your first DVD within 20 minutes of getting this drive out of the box and flashing it with the free Sony upgrade. Most problems come from NOT disabling DMA before you flash. FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY!!! Enjoy

Strengths: Ability to burn virtually all DVD and CD formats (save DVD-RAM), flawless burns -- not one coaster yet.

Weakness: I agree that the Veritas software package isn't the greatest, but I really like what looks to be the full version of Sonic's MyDVD software that came with my drive.

This drive is truly amazing. I upgraded from a Philips D-01 DVD+RW burner, and this thing is so far above that one in more ways than I can explain. I have yet to burn a coaster, and I have used the drive extensively using ALL supported DVD and CD formats. In fact, I did some testing attempting to get it to fail (opening huge newsgroups while it was burning or doing Photoshop manipulations while it was burning) and I was unable to do so. The cache did come very close to emptying a few times, but it appeared that the drive waited for the system resources to become available again before continuing the burn. Really amazing stuff. I personally use Nero to do most of my data and audio burning, and I think that may also have something to do with the rock-solid stability of the drive's burn process. I find Nero to be way more stable than Roxio in every respect. I have also used DVDXCopy, MyDVD, and a few others that I can't remember at the moment. All worked flawlessly. I really can't recommend this drive highly enough.

Strengths: This DVD Burner has so much potential and the hardware that is contained in the drive is amazing. The speed and compatibility of this drive is wonderful.

Weakness: The software bundled with this drive is horrible.

While the software is really bad, you can purchase other software for this drive that makes life a lot easier. Try using DVD X Copy with the Nero burning engine. Make sure you purchase the latest version of Nero Burning Rom too. Have fun...

Strengths: ABILITY TO BURN BOTH +R,+RW AND -R, -RW FORMATS AND THE EASE OF THE FIRMWARE UPGRADE(TO USE 4X DVDS)

Weakness: SOFTWARE IS DREADFULLY INADEQUATE

I HAVE MADE ABOUT 10 DVDs SINCE I RECEIVED THIS DVD BURNER FOR CHRISTMAS(FROM BEST BUY). I INSTALLED ALL THE INCLUDED SOFTWARE BUT NONE OF THE PACKAGES WERE AS GOOD AS THE BURNER SOFTWARE I'M ACCUSTOMED TO. FOR MAKING DATA DVDs, ETC. I AM USING EZ CD CREATOR 5 PLATINUM WITH THE LATEST UPDATES INSTALLED. I BURNED 4.5GB OF DATA ONTO A DVD+RW IN ABOUT 18 MINUTES. THE OTHER SOFTWARE PACKAGE I HAVE USED IS DVD X COPY BURNING ONTO DVD-R DVDs. I HAVE USED THIS SEVERAL TIMES TO BACK UP THE MOST VIEWED ITEMS IN MY HOME DVD COLLECTION. ONCE AGAIN, I HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS. FOR BACKING UP A FULL DVD, THE SOFTWARE DOES IT IN ABOUT 40 MINUTES. FOR COMPARISON, I AM RUNNING WITH AN ATHLON XP2100, WITH 512MB OF THE CHEAPEST DDR RAM I COULD FIND IN A FIC MOTHERBOARD.

Strengths: DATA-PACKING: Compression, Buffering and the OVERALL general usage as a data storage device, it is one (of the few) flawless piece of digital art..

Weakness: NONE (Thus far)

[I MUST STATE that I borrowed this device from a friend to try in my self-built Hot Rod PC, in order to see how it performed in an incredible, speed-extreme environment(1)]. -REGARDLESS of DISK-TYPE- be it a typical economy-CD-R disc, or the most expensive DVD-RW disk; I can store any given data with great confidence, knowing that when I choose to return to that same data, it will, without a doubt be 100% intact. REGARDLESS of DATA-TYPE- ANYthing., from my own custom encryption programs (.AAa), to the most typical types of data, from .AVI to .ZIP files, one could place a high wager on the identity-match of what one chose to record VS. what the given disk of which it has been recorded upon. It has been (thus far) a wonderous component. (1): a 100% SCSI machine w/ 2GB of ECC RDRAM, a 2.8GHz/533khz L2 P4, 5(five) 36.7GB 15,000 r.p.m. SCSI Hard Drives in Hot-Swap slots, 1000 Megabit Ethernet, Thumbprint ID, Audigy eX, Ti4600 128MB 3D video + too much more to mention.> IT RAN FLAWLESSLY!> If I was'nt broke at the present [ha ha (but true)], it's MY #1 choice.! Strengths: Compatibility

Weakness: Software package, especially Veritas package.

Easy to install and work relatively stable. But terribly lacking in software package. Simple Backup doesn't work and crashes my system every time I try to run it. RecordNow is also very lousy. Sony should get rid of the Veritas package.

Strengths: No compatibility problems (DVD+/-), great firmware upgrade

Weakness: Other than the lame software they give with it, none.

I don't know what the guy was thinking you said he couldn't get the thing to work...I suppose there are isolated incidents of problems for everything. I got it working right out of the box. AND...Sony now has a firmware upgrade that changes the READ AND WRITE SPEED TO 4x! How bout that?!?! And another rated it 3 stars...because Dell hasn't shipped it to him. How can he rate the product if he doesn't have it? Anyway, I have been checking here to find a reputable place that had it in stock...never in stock! So I happened to be in Office Depot, and low and behold...EUREKA! They had one, kind of hidden...totally was not expecting to see it, because they don't even list this on their website. Paid a premium for getting it right then ($370)...but hey, at least I have it, and OD is always good on returns, etc. if needed. Bottom-line: Lovin' it so far!

You were lucky, I ordered the drive on 10/4/2002 but hasn't receive the drive since then and the date now is 11/25/2002. No email update either. Called customer service before but get no pending ship date. Just got the information of the drive is back ordered. I am going to call again to see how Dell is playing their games. Dell sucks! They don't want to honor the price when you order the drive. I will never order from Dell again!

Weakness: More coasters that DVDs. Gets expensive fast!

Too many problems to mention. I do computers for a living and this is the first DVD/CD-RW unit that I have had a problem with. Using Win XP with latest drivers and flashed bios for burner. This is a piece of junk..... I strongly advise you stay away or at least buy from someone with 100% refund and no restocking fee. I am very disappointed after reading good reviews for others. What were they thinking!!!!

Strengths: Handles just about any media type, good cd write speeds. Easy install

Weakness: Some cheaper media can cause coasters. Slow DVD read speeds locked at 2x. So users will need a separate DVD reader.Users UPGRADE to latest 1.0d firmware ASAP to avoid DVD media burn issue.

Only issue is finding cheap DVD-R 2x and later 4x media...and doing the firmware upgrade to avoid coasters. Works in internal or external firewire encloseure. Nero users make sure to upgrade to latest version as well.

Strengths: Easy to Install, I have burned DVD-R and DVD+RW and everything has worked flawlessly.

Weakness: The software provided is kind of cheesy.

I love this drive. Can't wait to get some 4X DVD-R media to try some speed burns. I have burned 2 2X DVDs and they worked great. I have been burning purely home video productions and have tested 5 types of DVDs so far. I bought a sampler package that has 6 different types of DVD-R and everything is usable in my DVD players. With the freedom of format, this drive is definately the drive to get. I have heard that the DVD+R format in this drive is buggy, but I have not verified that.

5 Star Review   By member coran007 - Oct 30, 2002

Strengths: Was able to burn 3.8GB of data in ~ 26 minutes, great for backing up data and other things. Its also very nice to be able to write to all the different formats of dvd media, except for dvd-ram media.

Weakness: Haven't found any yet.

Upon recieving the drive it has worked perfectly. It was easy to install and there is enough software to get you up and running for all your needs. The drive is fast and reliable and have been able to burn to all dvd media that it supports. The only thing you need to worry about is burning to verbatim dvd-r media that was produced before october 31, 2002. Otherwise all othe media works.
