No Problems whatsoever!
5 Star Review   By member kratur - Jan 24, 2007

Strengths: Great quality. Reads like a charm. Burning is mistake free!

Weakness: None so far!

Did a great job of reading all DVDs, even ones that were a bit scratched up. Did a much better job than my old DVD burner (Samsung). The DVD-burning was smooth and mistake free :). For the price (~$40), you cannot beat the quality.

Sony DRU-120C Dual Layer DVD±RW
4 Star Review   By member algea1 - Jan 22, 2007

Strengths: Solid drive and easy to use

Weakness: No lightscribe

Got it for about $10 after rebate about two months ago. So far so good. Since most of my DVDs are 4x and 8x, I have not got much chance to try higher speed (only once and had no problem). For my lower speed discs, the result is pretty good. I have not waste one disc yet. However, it does have some noises when reading DVD at high speed (don't know whether it's normal or a defect). Nevertheless, I am satisfied with this drive, so far.

Great Drive
4 Star Review   By member Gjdude - Jan 16, 2007

Strengths: Brand, Speed, Dual Layer Support

Weakness: WIsh it could lightscribe

I am using this drive with my newly built PC and I am very happy so far. I had some 8X DVD media which I would only work on 4X speed on my laptop, now this burner burns it at 8X without any errors. I have not tried a 16X media yet but I am sure it will work pretty good. CD/DVD read speed is fast as well.

Sony (LG) has a winner
4 Star Review   By member Anonymous - Jan 2, 2007

Strengths: Fast, cheap and overburning-capable

Weakness: Clicking sound after the disc loads.

This is a great burner for the price. It includes 16X burning for DVDs while also able to burn DVD-RAM at 5X(which I have not tried). The drive looks good and installation was quick and painless. The only drawback is a clicking noise that I hear for the first few minutes when a disc is inserted and it spins up. Very happy with my purchase because it replaced an older NEC 8X drive without DVD-RAM capabilities. Also played a DVD just fine. This is a rebadged LG drive and the quality seems to be there for now. Thanks.

Sony DRU-120C
3 Star Review   By member htse - Dec 29, 2006

Strengths: Price is cheap, good looking drive

Weakness: No lightscribe

I got the drive for $25 AR, the drive come with Sony's own software, no Nero, and it is not a re-badged lite-on drive. Everything seem to make in China this days, so hope this drive will last.

DRU-120C DVD Writer
2 Star Review   By member leolite1 - Dec 23, 2006

Strengths: Black , fast and shorter in length than my other writers

Weakness: None so far .. Update: after using it for couple months the drive only works once in a while

Sony brand name, got it for a nice price over the post black Friday sale. It has performed as good as my other generic DVD writer. Although I have only used it to burn on DVD-R media. Update: The writer started acting up a month back; I use on it on my secondary computer so didn't notice when this started happening. Anyway I only used it for reading and it was having trouble even reading CDs. It would just make click-click noises. Contacted Sony technical support and was suggested to install drivers, make the drive a secondary master. Since the problem was happening even with live CDs so there was no issues of the installed drivers. And installing it as secondary master just seemed problematic since that was already taken. A couple more things, the part # printed on the drive DRU-120C but BIOS indicated the drive was DW-G120A; so it seems as if the drive was simply rename. I am not depending too much on this drive now. Trying to get a replacement under warranty means sending it with return postage and all that doesn't seem worthy enough.

Great With Some Tweaking
4 Star Review   By member intex45 - Dec 20, 2006

Strengths: Speed of dvd $ cd burning,

Weakness: No instructions for troubleshooting, no bundled software

When I first installed this drive, it couldn't read anything. After a call to customer service, and disabling the "enable this drive for CD recording" feature in XP, this drive works perfectly.

Nice drive. Good price.
4 Star Review   By member Canucklehead - Dec 18, 2006

Strengths: No coasters yet.

Weakness: Not to speak of.

Got this drive cheap at TD. Price was motivating factor. It is actually a Lite-on drive, not a Sony drive. I've used other Lite-On drives in the past and they perform adequately. I've been useing the past 2 weeks with no coasters yet. Using Verbatim media. Does what I'd expect a drive to do. Also does DVD-RAM but I've not used that yet.

Good Drive awesome price
5 Star Review   By member dblanketyblank - Dec 16, 2006

Strengths: Very good price. Fast.

Weakness: No lightscribe.

I got this drive for about $10 after rebate on BF. It's an awesome price for what has so far been a good drive. This drive seems a little faster than the samsung 16x dvdrw I bought, and it's one third the price so I'm happy. (possibly it's my installation) Anyways installing the drive was a snap. Just took popped it in added the ide cable to my mobo, and it was detected right away. I didn't use the included software since I already had retail versions of burning software installed. So far I haven't had any problems burning 4.7gb dvd-rs and dvd+rs. I don't buy dual layers as they cost like 10 times as much as normal ones, so I can't comment on how well those burn.

Great entry level multi-format DVD burner
4 Star Review   By member icandoit - Dec 9, 2006

Strengths: Speedy burner with dual layer capability. Nice black front faceplate.

Weakness: Not yet found.

Bought this drive online at a great price: $10 after $30 rebate. The drive is identified by my computer as DW-G120A with firmware version MYR5. It's been said that there's no need to crossflashing to Liteon firmware as Sony's MYR5 (that's what the drive apparently comes with) and MYS6 is newer than Liteon MS0P. I set my Sony drive as master with the use of an 80-wire ribbon cable; the drive burns very fast. Great DVD burner at great price.

great drive at affordable price
5 Star Review   By member dire - Dec 8, 2006

Strengths: quiet, fast, light, easy to use

Weakness: a little slow at start-up, some click noise when turning on the computer

This drive is super easy to install and also easy to use. The software coming with it is actually Nero essential, also does its job nicely. I don't know if it's rebaged Lite-on or not, but it works as it is supposed to, then I'm fine with it.

Excellent
5 Star Review   By member EricaM0817 - Dec 5, 2006

This is a very nice burner, and at a good price. I bought it mostly for someone who doesn't need it for a lot, just mostly CD burning. The dual layer is especially nice. I haven't had any problems with the Sony brand. I haven't been using this for very long, but it is very easy to install and we haven't had any problems yet.

Excellent Drive for a cheap price
4 Star Review   By member aguswings - Dec 4, 2006

Strengths: Very nice looking black front plate. It fits well in my case and match the color too. Speedy read and write with DVD-RAM support is a huge plus. It can read everything I throw at it and more.

Weakness: Occasional whirring noise. Maybe I just got a bad noisy one.

16X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 8X DVD+R DL 16X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 5X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 24X CD-RW 40X. Hardly a bad choice. I got this for $10 during Black Friday sale so can't argue with that price. This drive is actually a rebadged Lite-On 165P6S so if you want, you can reflash the firmware to Lite-On. Sony support is very good. Highly recommended.

Great product and price
5 Star Review   By member reeve - Dec 3, 2006

Strengths: Dual layer, fast, and quiet.

Weakness: None so far

Great product from Sony. Cheap and reliable. I bought this while I was making a new PC from the scratch and this drive worked flawlessly with Windows XP. Look out for rebate--even though the price seems to be in the forties, you can get for less than half of that price. Only caveat is that DVDs are expensive, but it would come down eventually. Thanks Sony.

Great Value
5 Star Review   By member paazel - Dec 1, 2006

Strengths: affordable, easy to install, good fast burns

Weakness: none, 8MB buffer would be welcome

basically a re-badged lite-on 165P6S burner (can be cross flashed to that drive if you really want to, i've kept it as is). simple to install. works as it should, haven't tried DVD RW, DVD DL, or DVD-RAM capabilities yet; but hope to try out DVD-RAM as a backup medium on server. basic nero package is competent for my limited use on server.
