Strengths: Worked fine... when it worked

Weakness: Doesn't work anymore

Drive worked fine for about 5 months then stopped reading all discs. Sony support was not helpful and online retailer won't return emails. Not a good product or buying experience. I feel let down by Sony and the poor quality of this drive.

2 Star Review   By member archaeoman - Feb 18, 2004

Strengths: Very quite drive, Low priced, Reads CD,s quickly.

Weakness: Short durability.

It was a great drive while it lasted, which was 12 months. Now it can't play anything. At least now I have the incentive to buy that DVD-RW that I have been wanting to to get. I think that I will stay away from Sony computer products for a while.

Strengths: Great price for dual DVD and CDROM drive.

Can't beat the price for this Sony DVD/CDROM drive, COMPUSA had the exact same product for $70.00!!!!! A snap to install and software for a DVD player also included.

5 Star Review   By member rlt2562 - Apr 3, 2003

Strengths: Quiet, fast, and so far, 100% reliability.

Weakness: Absolutely none that I've found.

No-brainer installation, Win98se recognized the drive without incident, and the CyberLink PowerDVD and Interactual Player software were very nice freebies. Who cares if it didn't come with screws? I wasn't building a new personal confuser, just upgrading. Besides, screws are cheap, and when I build my first computer next week, I'll have them ready. Buy this drive, use it in good health, and don't worry about the details. One more thing, Googlegear is having a special on this drive, free 2nd day air shipping for a nice $40.99 (today is 4-3-03).

5 Star Review   By member XweAponX - Oct 25, 2002

Strengths: Can read DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW

Weakness: None- Flawless

Mine came Retail so I paid for it- No problem, I am willing to pay for quality Sony products. I have had several "Inexpensive" DVD-Roms act very screwy on me- This one does NOT. It plays DVDs and DVD+R/RWs no problem and it reads CDs and CD/Rs no problem. I paid 70 dollars for a "CenDyne" DVD-rom that turned out to be a Lite-On. I paid 60 dollars for a Kingston DVD-Rom (60 dollars and OEM at THAT) that could not act as an Audio CD player. As I have said in other reviews: You can't beat most Sony entertainment products with a stick, it is only when Sony goes PROPRIETARY (Betamax, Network Walkman) that you have to worry. But no worries with this product, and you can't beat this one with a stick either. If you buy this OEM for $39 or Retail for $80 you are getting a quality unit so no worries. And this item is not only an entertainment product it is a Tool- It is like Buying Craftsman versus what you can find in the $1.98 bin at your local 7-11. This unit also reads my DVD+R Data disks no problem and that saves me lots of space in CD storage. Retail version comes with PowerDvd XP which is an excellent Software Player.

Strengths: A very reliable DVD drive. Is very cheap.

Weakness: You can only get it OEM, and there is no support on the SONY website.

This is one of the cheapest DVD drives around. It's 16x, but it does not make much noise, and the DVD doesn't rattle. I've never had any problems reading DVDs, even ones from Europe. The only problems are that it's OEM, SONY offers no support, and there arn't any screws in the box. Its best feature is its small size, which lets you fit it easily into a mini ATX case. Get it (and assuming you have some screws) you won't be dissapointed!
