Strengths: Works well only when it does work.

Weakness: Continuous disappointment when I try to use it.Lose lots of time trying to make it run right.

Professionally insalled at a shop with Roxio program. Without warning it gives me a "Can not access Drive D" error" and refuses to either write or read on a Direct CD held open for continued use. Will then start to work without warning, and never know when it will or will not serve me. Has caused loss of quite a bit of data and photos by it's failures. Have to uncheck DMA boxes and reboot just about each time I add data. Causes PC to lock up at times.Do not buy it, and watch out for computer manufacturers who put their own name on the product and use it to update your equipment while charging up to 3 times it's normal price.

Strengths: fast drive

Weakness: quits burning completely; noisy

I purchased this drive in June 2002, and it worked until last night (Feb 2003) when it won't burn at all. Keeps spinning up and spinning down and locks up the computer. Going to send back to factory for replacement, then sell the replacement. I'm going to replace with a more reliable brand name. This drive is noisy and sounds like a fan running when it burns...very rarely did it burn consistently up to 40X

Strengths: Does what it say's, good speed,

Weakness: somtimes it just stops for no reason I have to re-boot then it's ok.

There are a few things about RW's that are standard...first you must re-boot before attempting to write anything, turn off any Anti-Virus Systems, be off the internet, your computer should be doing just about nothing...now you can start "Burning". With the Lite-On LTR-40125S I found that the software that came with it "Nero" I ended up with more "coasters" than anything, then I tryed Easy CD Creator 5 PLAT, and I stoped useing cheap CD's, you get what you pay for with blank Cd's I use only Sony now, out of every 15-20 CD's maybe I'll get one falty but I put that down to "chance" and not the hardware. Looking after the CD's after burning is another subject, they are much "thinner" than ready-made shop CD's , the lable side is the weakest just plastic and foil it's a pity that CD's arn't as robust as the old 45 records of yester-year. If your RW just stop's for no reason just do the two R's...relax and re-boot.

Strengths: Fast, Works well when it works

Weakness: Errors using different types of media both cheap and medium priced. Customer service is non-existant

I bought the 40125S to replace an old Ricoh that I had. At first it burned anything and everything. I could use cheap media, expensive media whatever. However lately I am getting many Cyclic Redundancy errors or MS-DOS errors when I burn a cd then try to read from it. It happens about 2 out of 3 disks. I have to crank it back to about 24X in order to get any reliability out of it at all. The company's customer service isn't really there at all. I called them and they make you return the drive to the place you purchased it who then make you do a whole nother set of things to make sure it doesn't work. They all just tell me to set it lower on the speed. Well I didn't buy a 40X burner to burn at 24X. I'm not sure I'll buy another lite-on for a while.

Strengths: initially Works

Weakness: not reliable. Can stop working any time. Bad Customer Service.

I bought this product a 7 of months ago and generally it was working good, although sometimes giving me some errors. Two or three weeks ago it stopped working at all . I contacted their service and sent them my broken device. They sent me a refurbish junk that did not work either. Now I am trying to reach the customer service again but I am afraid I will have to buy a new CD-RW but this time it gonna be not any kind of LiteOn's . So, this is my story. I do not know anything about the other types, but I would recommend to stay away from this one and do not count on their customer service.

Strengths: This is a great drive! Overall preformance is great especially for the price. LITE-ON is a part of the JVC group and has great warranty and support.

Weakness: None! I ran many tests on the drive and it works great...

Concerning the problems with software compatibility: LITE-ON drives are relatively new to the market, so the user needs to download the latest software update in order to use this drive. For example, the only compatible version of Roxio Easy CD Creator version is 5.1b. However, the update is available at Roxio's website and you can download it for free. If you need any help concerning this drive or any other PC hardware/software issue feel free to email me: e_hunter_18@excite.com

Strengths: Fast, Reliable, Price is WELL worth paying

Weakness: NERO on the other hand sucks,I don't understand why they evan add it in the retail packages you deffinatly won't want to use it, it's out of date, always gives you issues/problems and pain to us

Fast, Reliable, Price is WELL worth paying i just upgraded to the 40x12x48 model from a plextor 16x. while it might not have as good of software bundle or name hype as plextor 40x's it gives them a run for thier money.on a rating of 1 - 10 I give the lite-on 40x12x48x a 9.5 woulda been a 10 if had a better software bundle

Strengths: quality

Weakness: documentation

I purchased the Lite-On 40125S on the local market over here in S. Korea and just figured the lack of documentation was due to being overseas, as it is with most products over here. Otherwise, the product works great, is fast, and seems to be compatible with most of the available blank cd media. Lite-On does a lot of OEM stuff, and it appears that the quality in this drive is good, so I would recommend this drive for anyone who does not want to pay the extra dollars for the big name brands.

Strengths: SUPER FAST! Has burn proof technology, Good buffering.

Weakness: Poor documentation, obsolute Software.

I have two other Burners. Neither will come close to the Lite-on's speed. I have a dual-boot system w/Windows XP, and ME.I had NO TROUBLE using the LTR-40X/12X/48X with Easy CD Creator (which was already installed on my computer) with either O.S. I didn't try everything in Easy CD, but everything I tried seemed to work fine. I went to Roxio's web site and checked their compatible CD burners list. It said the LTR40125s is only compatible with Easy Cd Creator version 5.01b. (which is the one I'm using) I prefer Elaborate bytes 'Clone CD4' It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of Easy CD, but there are other advantages. A demo can be downloaded from www.elaborate-bytes.com. The lightning speed far overcomes the documentation and software shortcomings.

Strengths: This is a very fast burner with a good handle on buffering.

Weakness: DON'T INSTALL THIS DRIVE OR THE SOFTWARE without removing Easy CD Creator FIRST.

I was chugging along with a 4x writer and thought I'd upgrade. I removed the old, installed the new and my nightmares began. If this is your first installation of a CDRW on your PC this should work fine, I had a previous drive and Roxio Easy CD creator (which you'll have to give up if you like or have it) and I spend the weekend reinstalling Windows 2000 and all my software! I haven't been able to re-install the Roxio and I really like it. Great drive but beware of this issue. Also the Nero software they give you is only a part of the retail version.

Strengths: Cheap, and Fast :)

Weakness: Read down

Well, yesterday Iv'e got my new Burner - LiteOn 40x12x48. I was very excited and all so I wanted to test it for the first time. I installed Nero on my WindowsXP (which came with it) but then I couldn't choose the burner. The only Recorder that was on the list was "Image Recorder". I chose Image Recorder but it didn't work. After some digging and looking in Nero's FAQ I saw that one of the reasons that your burner didn't work is that maybe your Nero isn't updated. I went to Nero's site to update my version and after installing, there I see my burner on the list of devices when I turned Nero on. So stupid of LiteOn to provide an old Nero version. I tried my first burning (CD-Copy, 700mb). When it asked me what speed I want, I noticed that my Max speed is somehow only 32x. At first I thought it might be my discs because they are limited to 32x, but then I went to the burner properties in Nero and saw that it says there that my max is 32x, weird. The burning ended after 4 minutes, the buffer didn't go below 95%. After that I installed another burning program to see what's up with my max speed. I installed CDRWIN, and tried to burn a .bin file which was 702mb. On CDRWIN I could choose 40x, the burning ended after 2:03 minutes. Conclusion: Nero sucks, CDRWIN owns.
