Samsung 226BW
3 Star Review  productwiki.com - May 7, 2009

The Samsung 226BW is a value-priced 22" widescreen LCD monitor with a 16:10 aspect ratio. This monitor has a native resolution of 1680 x 1050 with its 0.282 mm pixel pitch, and boasts an incredibly fast 2ms grey-to-grey response time. It is also a very bright screen with deep blacks, coming from its 1000:1 contrast ratio and 300 cd/m2 brightness rating. The 226BW also includes a "dynamic contrast" settings that boosts the contrast ratio to 3000:1 by dynamically brightening and dimming the screen based on the content. Reviews have suggest that this featured is useful for gaming, but perhaps not in the typical Windows environment because of overblown colors. This 226BW comes in a sleek black, glossy finish. The only adjustments that you can make are by tilting the monitor front-to-back or to swivel the entire screen. This monitor includes a single VGA and a single DVI-D input. The DVI input ... PROS: (1) Very fast response time (2ms) (2) Fantastic price for the quality (shop around for ~$300) (3) Superb contrast ratio (1000:1, 3000:1 dynamic setting) (4) capable of playing 720p high definition media (5)"MagicBrigh" quick display setting button ... CONS: (1) Limited adjustment options (only tilt and swivel) (2) The"","","" panel debacle (3) Limited input options (no component video, only a single DVI) (4) TN panel - fast and cheap at the expense of colour depth and viewing angles

2 Star Review

Strengths: easy set up - lots of good picture and good color

Weakness: looks to be wearing out early on

I have been using the monitor for almost 2 years and now both edges and the bottom are changing as though the glare coating is disappearing or something. It isn't real noticeable with darker screen but really stands out when you have light background. It really looks like it is wearing out. It is not in direct sun light or near any moisture. My son has a much cheaper monitor and it is not doing this.

qustionable resolution
3 Star Review

Strengths: The 226bw monitor has many strong points

Weakness: It is not ideal for drawings.

The Samsung 226bw monitor has a lot of strong points but if you work with graphics or drawings you might be disappointed with it’s resolution. My previous monitor was a Viewsonic vx900 and it would present a clear black line 20/100 of a point wide. The Samsung 226bw will only display a line 70/100 of a point wide. My printer will print a line that is 12/100 point wide or about 6 times narrower than can be clearly seen on the screen with out magnification.

cheap and grandiose!
5 Star Review   By member TomManolo - Dec 17, 2007

Strengths: bright colors, excellent contrast, default factory settings perfect for me and worth the €

Weakness: none worth mentioning here

This screen is big bang for the buck. Order online and you will pay cheaper than you would buying from your neighborhood's store, even with the manufacturer rebate. I did not have to change any of the settings, which was a nice plus, but most importantly, this screen just works in all lighting conditions. My desk is in a corner area where there can be from none to very bright back-lighting and the anti-glare works pure magic. My typical use for this scree ranges from watching videos, playing games, to developing software. I used to feel pain while working at home vs. my dual-screen display at work. Now, it feels the same with a resolution of 1600xwhatever.

Beautiful
5 Star Review   By member bmountfo - Nov 27, 2007

Strengths: Crisp, bright colors. Great looking monitor.

Weakness: Blinking LED when in standby is annoying.

I bought this for my wife and now I wish it were mine. It makes my old Apple 20" cinema display look like a dinosaur. My only problem with it so far is that the blue power LED is quite bright and blinks annoyingly when in standby. If I leave the door to the office open at night, I can see the blinking light filling the hallway outside. It is a minor thing, I know.

Samsung 226bw - NOT for critical color work
2 Star Review   By member jdsppg - Nov 26, 2007

Strengths: thin bezel, bright, lightweight

Weakness: severly limited viewing angle causes brightness and color change from top to bottom

For work that does not depend on critical color and brightness quality, this monitor is probably ok. It displays clear, sharp text, the backlight is even, and it gives a nice, bright image. The manual controls also give a reasonable amount of adjustment. 2 inputs (DVI & d-sub) are also helpful. But here is the caveat. This monitor is not suitable for color-critical work with photography or design. From a normal working distance, the top of the screen looks significantly yellower and darker than the bottom of the screen. Side-to-side variance is not as bad, but is still marginal. I am a professional photographer, and make my living working with photographs on my computer screen all day, every day. I must admit that I was VERY disappointed that a highly rated monitor from such a reputable manufacturer (Samsung) would perform so poorly. Another problem is that it has poor tonal separation in brightest image areas. But its biggest problem is its extreme sensitivity to viewing angle. If you had a photo of a scene of evenly lit pale blue fog, on this monitor the top of the photo would appear slightly darker and definitely greenish gray. The bottom of the photo would have a harsh brightness to it and be much bluer. One of my monitors is a Dell 2005 FPW. It is not perfect, but its viewing angle consistency is far superior to the Samsung 226bw. I am sorry that I do not yet know of a current monitor suitable for critical photo work, that I can steer you towards. But for critical phtography work, or even semi-critical viewing, the Samsung 226bw is NOT your monitor. This one goes back to the dealer tomorrow.

Fantastic Product
5 Star Review   By member Nitrogenus - Nov 22, 2007

Strengths: Size, price, picture quality, 3 year warranty, Samsung

Weakness: 16:10 not 16:9, MINOR back light bleed, 160/160 degree viewing angle not 178/178, no tilt/swivel

Samsung has been making quality products for years, and this monitor is no exception. I originally wanted to purchase the Dell UltraSharp 2407WFP, but it is 2x the price of this monitor. I desperately needed a great monitor for web browsing, movies, and games. This monitor met all of my needs and expectations. 280 dollars AR for a 22" monitor is a fantastic deal, and it's a purchase I am glad I made. I finally (after six years) retired a 20.1" CRT. Do not let the weaknesses I listed deter you from purchasing this monitor. They are nominal issues at best. I am thoroughly satisfied with my purchase, and I highly recommend this product to anyone looking for a high quality LCD.

Unbearable
1 Star Review   By member phillucky11 - Oct 2, 2007

Strengths: Resolution, Dead Pixel Policies

Weakness: Back light bleed, Support, Color

Initially impressed by the zero dead pixel policy, I purchased one of these units. I have now had several replacement attempts by Samsung and have now given up trying to get this unit fixed. My major concerns are as follows: 1. The blacklight bleed cannot be over emphasized. (Although not strongly visible under strong office lighting, it is overwhelming in low light or non-fluorescent lighting conditions. This is no good for movies or people who like black desktop backgrounds) 2. (In Australia) Samsung can do the zero dead pixel policy buy an accident in their repair process. They don't have the technical people able to verify the fault with the product, so they simply ask you to ship it back and they send out a second hand replacement. No questions asked. However.. the second hand unit, as I have learnt, are not tested either. So in practice I found that Samsung just kept sending out replacement units until I gave up. I'm very disappointed with Samsung as the specs on this unit are impressive, and not many companies are doing the zero dead pixel policy. One other issue was the color, which was washed out on the replacement units as well as the original. Might be better to look at something without the zero dead pixel policy but a better backlight and better color reproduction.

Samsung 226BW
4 Star Review   By member GAC - Sep 28, 2007

Strengths: Fantastic display, sexy styling, cool software, simple setup. You name it, this one's got it!

Weakness: As mentioned by others, the stand is a cheapy. Non-adjustable and wobbly. Lucky for me I've got my desk and chair adjustments to compensate, otherwise I would need to make some kind of angled lift.

Best bang for the buck. This is my first LCD/Plasma monitor and I am quite pleased. I have 4 Samsung Syncmaster CTR's and found them all to be excellent in quality and price. The 226BW isn't as quick in gaming as my old Trinitron CTR, but I got used to it in a short time. The super clarity of the picture and vivid colors more than compensate for the slower response. Widescreen is the way to go, folks. I can probably lose the 2nd monitor (almost). And, Oh yeah, did I mention the rebate? Only a couple days left!

Weakness: Power and dvi/vga connections are on the far sides of the back panel, it would be better if they were directly behind the base for cable management purposes.

EXCELLENT! I Would Recommend!
5 Star Review   By member DS_Nitris - Sep 3, 2007

Strengths: Very clear, bright, excellent quality, the 22" size, the wide screen, the 3 year warranty, VGA & DVI (HDCP) inputs.

Weakness: Probably the only weakness is that the height is not adjustable...but you can tilt it (or put it on a small stack of old cds!)

I need a good monitor as I am a professional video editor. After running around to different stores and and buying different monitors I finally decided on this Samsung 226BW. As I mentioned in the strengths, it's very clear, bright and excellent quality. To boot, there is a 3 year warranty which is amazing considering most other monitors only offer 1 year. Warranty has become more important to me as many things can go wrong and a 3 year warranty shows that they stand behind their product! The stand does not adjust but I made a small 2 inch stand which works. The quality of the monitor makes up for this weakness. In conclusion, I would definitely recommend this monitor!

The Best PS3 monitor you could get
5 Star Review

Strengths: 1080P support, very good black levels, slick design

Weakness: Annoying on screen pop-up when you use 1080P syaing that this isn't the ideal rsolution. Not so ergonomicaly placed controls.

I wanted a monitor so I could connect both my PC and my PS3. This is the best out there if you own a PS3 and don't want to spend loads of cash for an LCD TV. Enjoy Games and BD movies at FULL HD. Simply brilliant.

5 Star Review

Strengths: sharp Picture, Bright Monitor, great refresh time, and excellent contrast ratio

Weakness: Height adjustment would be nice, ant the power led is too bright(i have to turn it off at night when it is on stand by, it keeps me up)

This monitor is truly awesome. i came from a 19" dell crt. i didn't get rid of it, instead i am using it as a duel display; let me tell you that there is a huge difference having them side by side. again the hight adjustment would be nice but an old text book can compensate for that.

Great monitor! Works with video too
5 Star Review   By member GlenKrueger - Jul 31, 2007

Strengths: Top rated, great price, beautiful image quality, accepts both digital computer and analog TV inputs

Weakness: No TV-specific inputs/outputs, no height adjustment (minor points)

I shopped around for monitors before settling on this one, reading every review I could find on widescreen 22" monitors: this one stood out. I went to the store to check it out in person, and it clearly had the best display quality. It works perfectly with my new widescreen laptop at 1680 x 1050 and 60 Hz in true color. It's so bright I have to keep all the lights in the room on, or the contrast is so tremendous it's actually bothersome. But the bonus came when I bought an XBox 360 Elite. I can use a DVI-D Dual Link to HDMI cable to play at 1280 x 1024 (high definition) on the monitor! No need to buy a high def TV for personal viewing. It's also smaller and lighter than many of it's competitors. But it isn't suitable for use as a TV for more than one person: the viewing angle is limited. It's substantially cheaper than it's closest rival: the Westinghouse LCM-22w2.

Samsung 226BW: S-A-C models: No difference!
5 Star Review   By member nmastae - Jun 4, 2007

I called Samsung today and was told by a technical service representative that there is NO difference between the three "versions" of the 226BW monitor. The letters refer to the specific SAMSUNG manufacturing plant at which the panel was produced. S stands for South Korea, A for Mexico and C for (you guessed it!) China. All are manufactured to the exact same specifications and are subject to the same quality controls. . If you compare two monitors with the same location code -- S, A or C -- you are likely to find minor differences between them, as a matter of course. . Apparently someone posted on NewEgg some time ago about tests done with the S monitor, and the legend grew from there.

the best LCD monitor in 22"
5 Star Review   By member baobaoandgougou - May 30, 2007

Strengths: beautiful style, sharp imagine, good quality

Weakness: a little bit expensive

I can't say anything more to this monitor, it's the best 22" LCD monitor I have used. Just believe Samsung, the one I received has no dead pixel, 2ms response time and 3000:1 are already enough to make you spend money for it. 1680x1050, what can you ask for more?

Strengths: Good response time, Sweet clear LCD screen and resolution.

Weakness: Cannot extend up, limited swivel from left to right!! What gives!!

If you need a gaming LCD screen. this is it! Make this your buy! Just buy a wall mount to enable flexibility...to angle @ your desire....Price is great........ok!

Fantastic Monitor
5 Star Review   By member studentadvocate - May 8, 2007

Strengths: Vivid display, 22" widescreen, great contrast ratio.

I just love this monitor; I bought it to replace my 19" Viewsonic VX924 Gaming Monitor. The pictures and colors on this monitor are much better than on my other monitor. I love the 22" display, not too big or too small, for me anyway. Some people complain that this monitor does not have a height adjustment, but it does have a bends-back-& -forth adjustment, which works just fine for me. Samsung makes some great monitors & LCD TVs, and I highly reccommend this computer monitor. I have not watched a movie on it yet, but I can't wait! Be sure to comparison shop for this monitor, as prices can vary, between being $50-$100++tax more expensive at various online or B&M stores. This is the best computer monitor I have ever had.

Beautiful...if you get a good one
4 Star Review   By member dcp693 - May 7, 2007

Strengths: Fantastic image quality

Weakness: Some versions of this panel have bad backlight bleed, pixelated DVD playback in dark areas. Power light too bright.

There are three versions of this monitor and you won't know which one you get until you open the box. There is no consensus on which panel is best. However, the "S" version seems to get the most good votes. I originally had an "A" version, and it had terrible backlight bleed and pixelated DVD playback when showing dark areas. I exchanged the "A" and got a "C" panel that has almost no backlight bleed and certainly has no pixelated DVD playback. As far as I can tell, it's beautiful.

Samsung 226bw - Reason To Retire CRT
4 Star Review   By member grumpyoldmen - Apr 28, 2007

Strengths: Great display for the price. The manufacture's rebate did not hurt! Stylish, fast response time, good contrast, space saving and a good value.

Weakness: The Stand! There is no real height adjustment. It's possible to refasten the stand upright to the monitor for a slight increase in height.

I had purchased the smaller Samsung 906bw for another computer. Its performance for the price was so impressive that it was a quick decision to pick up the larger 226bw for another desk top. The monitor's size is great for most applications plus it has greatly increased usable desk space. My teenager thinks it is "wow." The blue power light is a bit bright.

SyncMaster 226BW
5 Star Review   By member lsherris - Apr 27, 2007

Strengths: Incredible video, Great Price

For the price, this monitor is fantastic. Text is good. Images are good. Video is unreal. The monitor is lighter than some 17" monitors. The stand has a small footprint. The monitor adjusts for tilt and left-right. I do not consider height adjustment to be important. The monitor is bright and colors are vibrant. Some LCD monitors need to be adjusted to almost 100% in order to achieve adequately brightness. This monitor is fine at 50%. Some color adjustment programs are bundled with the monitor. I haven't tried them since I use Spyder2 for color management. This monitor replaced an HP 19" monitor. Although that monitor was one of the better things I purchased from HP, I am very pleased with my purchase of this great Samsung 22" monitor.

Excellent
5 Star Review   By member hectorflores - Apr 27, 2007

Strengths: Vivid colors, high resolution, quick response time! It looks great at my home. The 22" is the perfect size to my desk.

Weakness: None so far. Unadjustable level.

The Samsung 22" monitor is a great deal for the price. I replaced my old IBM 17" (which was a great flat panel) and I was afraid about the quality and the resolution, but this TFT LCD display put my doubts away. The 2ms response time makes it perfect for games and movies. The colors are vivid and the resolution (1680x1050) is perfect to work with my documents. It was a great purchase.

SyncMaster 226BW 22
4 Star Review   By member rich1kim - Apr 25, 2007

Strengths: Excellent price for the quality of this 22" LCD. I especially enjoy the option of watching DVDs using the included DVI cable. The option of customizating the color balance is easy to use.

Weakness: Unable to move monitor vertically. Black gloss finish looks great but scratches easily.

The SyncMaster 226BW LCD monitor replaced my old CRT monitor from Dell. My main reason for purchasing the monitor is for digital photography, and watching movies. I soon realize the 22" monitor would enable me to connect a TV turner to watch television on this amazing screen. The 2ms refresh rate is the best for watching DVDs and the 1680x1050 screen size enables me to watch widescreen videos and edit digital photos with detailed precision. Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase and recommend this product anyone looking to purchase 22" monitor.

Way Impressed
5 Star Review   By member sukwarlord - Apr 19, 2007

Strengths: Very nice picture. Clean looking design. Only took minutes to set up color balance.

Weakness: Would have been nice to have an adjustable stand but that's not a real big deal.

I updated from my 19" screen thinking it is just the next step. Still getting used to the large size. Great for watching widescreen movies. The tilt stand does help when sitting on the couch viewing movies.

Beautiful Monitor
5 Star Review   By member Mujtaba120 - Apr 18, 2007

Strengths: 22" Screen is phenomenal for its size. Visually a beautiful monitor, very impressive looking. 2ms refresh time: best on the market. Price was very competitive. NewEgg Delivered it in 2 business days.

Weakness: None so far except monitor height can't be adjusted, but this is not a concern for me. Also, if you look down on the monitor from above (not eye level), it is a little difficult to make out the screen

I will try to update my comments on the product a little further into my usage of it. But so far, so good! The extra desktop space if perfect. Right now I'm using an analog connection (VGA). I need to upgrade my video card to DVI. So the picture can only get clearer.

226BW is great LCD ever.
5 Star Review   By member R Computer Pte. - Apr 18, 2007

Strengths: High resolution so hugh work place, high contrast and brightness, DVI and Analog inputs.

Weakness: Unadjustable height but it's okay to me.

I bought 22" 226BW for upgrading my 19" 931BW. Both are those of the best LCDs. I recommend to anyone wants to upgrade their monitor. Buy.com right now has best price.

Great monitor for the price
5 Star Review   By member extremefl - Apr 14, 2007

Strengths: Bright,clear screen

Weakness: No height adjustment on stand

Unbelievable LCD for the money. Large 22" screen with very vivid colors, crisp text and no ghosting. Great for gaming, watching movies or anything else. The magic bright controls are nice preset levels for various uses. From a purely asthetic viewpoint, the monitor housing is very stylish in gloss black with a silver accent along the bottom. My only complaint is that there is no height adjustment on the stand; this will be corrected by and LCD deskmount arm. Don't hesitate to buy this monitor if you're in the market for a larger LCD screen.

very good monitor
4 Star Review   By member hungvy - Apr 11, 2007

Strengths: bright, good interface and design, quick response. it is very ligth weigth.

Weakness: This monitor can not rotation to vertical like LCD2190 from NEC so you can reat the whole document, it can only adjust ange.

It is very good monitor for its price. I compare with the one that I use in my work place (nec 2190uxp). they are all most the same but Nec is $1200. the samsung is $350. One thing is different that the Nec can rotate on vertical so you can view the whole page document. This samsung can not rotate.

Great Monitor for the Price Point!
5 Star Review   By member gregfrog - Apr 2, 2007

Strengths: Bright, vibrant colors with lots of screen space for the buck.

Weakness: Not 178 degree viewing angles.

Bought this one at Best Buy and received an "A" panel with none of the ill effects reported by some others. There has been some debate about "S" and "A" panels with this model Samsung monitor as of late. Some reports on the internet claim that the "S" panel is made by Samsung and the "A" panel is made by AOC, another lcd panel manufacturer. Honestly, I am not sure whether the reports hold any real weight as to the quality of the viewing experience. I have to say it is a better monitor when compared to Viewsonic VX2235WM (a 22" widescreen monitor) and most 22" widesreen lcd monitors on the market. It's closest competitor is the LG L226WT, which is more expensive at this time. You can get better for a whole lot more money (about double for a 24" lcd monitor with 1920 x 1200 resolution!

Samsung 226BW 22"
5 Star Review   By member drake9999 - Mar 26, 2007

Strengths: Brightness, Quick Response Time, Looks Good.

Weakness: This maybe normal in 1680 by 1050 but some full screen videos do not come up right. Only 2 inputs.

The Samsung 22" monitor is a beautiful display for the price. The quick 2ms response time makes it perfect for games. It doesn't look cheap. I wish wall mounts were standard with every purchase. I bought a new desk just to make it feel up to date. I never buy anything at full price. I was happy to see many deals just 2 weeks after it was released. I came from a 17" CRT. There is no possible way to explain the advantages. Too many. If nothing comes out that is better then this unit including price in the next 3 months then it is still a good time to get one now.

Samsung 226 BW
5 Star Review

Strengths: Awsome, I bought one and loved it soo much i bought another one.

Weakness: ? WEAKNESSES ? ok... maybe the height adjustment but its no big deal, and maybe usb ports on the stand, but those things wouldnt improve the quality and it probably would be more than $400

buy this monitor if you like desk space, buy it if you love gaming, buy it if you like a fast response time and a sweet contrast ratio, and for once 2 ms is 2ms ive had the 940 bf with 4 ms responce time and it ghosted like hell. This one doesnt.

kick @$$
5 Star Review   By warbaboon on OnSale.com - Mar 16, 2007

Strengths: Bright! Fast! Crisp!

Weakness: telescoping stand would be a nice addition. resolutions could of been higher but for under $400, awsome

I have been using the same sony 20 inch crt for 8 years, it was the only thing i have left of one of my first computers so i thought this would be a nicely needed upgrade, and wow i was blown away, my games look 10X better, my eyes are still trying to get used to the size, just purchased another one for a friend.

Excellent Monitor!
5 Star Review   By member tc17 - Mar 12, 2007

Strengths: 22" Large screen with a very classy looking gloss finish around the frame.

Weakness: None - well if I had to nitpick, I would say maybe the buttons are slightly confusing for navigating the menus.

I love this monitor. I purchased it from somewhere else before Newegg had stock. The glossy finish around the edge of the screen makes the monitor look very nice! The display is great also. Mine had no dead or stuck pixels. I also have no backlight bleed. And the screen is not stretched as some claim might happen in the forums. It makes the tiny print easier to read and the text is sharp. And unlike some, I actually like the stand very much. Its only missing the ability to move up and down, but it has a base that turns easily because it has a seperate base underneath it that allows it to rotate without actually moving on your desk. The bass also has a glossy finish that looks good. The blue light on the power button doesn't bother me. Although it would if I was sitting at the exact same height as the button. But at an angle (higher up where you normally sit) it looks great. I received an "S" panel. Apparently some of the panels have an "A" on them even though its the same model. Apparently the S is a Samsung panel, and the A is another companies panel.

Samsung 226BW
4 Star Review   By member temmujin - Mar 8, 2007

Strengths: The colors are vivid with deep reds and yellows. No dead pixels. Played BF2142 and did not have any ghosting usually associated with LCD screens. It has excellent all around performance.

Weakness: There is no height adjustment. The blue light on the power button shines directly at you, which can be quite annoying and distracting in a dark room.

I waited a while to purchase an LCD monitor because I am a gamer and needed one with a low response time. I actually purchased the smaller 206BW and was so pleased with the performance I returned it and bought the 226BW. With a 2ms response time and a high contrast ratio, it works great for fast FPS games. The brightness may be a little too bright as it can hurt your eyes after a while. The 226BW has both DVI and VGA connections and comes with sets of cables. I only with the DVI cable was a foot or 2 longer.
