Excellent hardware modem
5 Star Review

Strengths: Controller based, rock solid, maintains connections

Weakness: none that I have experienced

I have been using these modems for six years in various machines and I recommned them to anyone in need of a controller based modem (hardware modem). Very stable connections and routinely connects at the highest possible speed on a good phone line. I have used this modem in the city where the lines are good and a very rural area where line quality leaves much to be desired and I can still get 44Kbs connection rates in that rural area. Works wonderfully with Windows 2000. I have never used it with Win XP (but will be trying it out later this month in a new XP build) so I can't comment on its operability with XP. However, if you run Win 2K or Linux, I highly recommend this modem. In comparison, I've used quite a few Winmodems and I've never achieved the same performance from a winmodem as with this USR modem, particularly in rural areas. Best connect I can get from a winmodem is 31.2Kbps on the same lines I get 44 with my USR. I have seen many negative comments about this modem, but I've used three of them over the last six years and never had a single problem. p.s. Most *connect* problems can be traced to poor line quality. There are some tests you can perform with this modem to test line quality. Go to here for details.

My experience with USR 56K v.92 Performance Pro PCI
1 Star Review   By member kriordan4 - Oct 2, 2005

Strengths: I was always a fan of US Robotics modems. However, after my own experience coupled with a few other reviews, I think I will choose another brand.

Weakness: Doesn't connect to my ISP even after several Bios flashes and driver updates in Windows XP Pro. Frustrating experience.

With an Alienware system and Asus motherboard, they put in the Performance Pro PCI. I thought this would be fine. The modem diagnostics seemed to indicate everything was fine, the modem even dialed my ISP, but the damn thing wouldn't connect. I would avoid this modem. Too much trouble.

Strengths: Controller Based, Hey it has it's own brain!

Weakness: Seems to lock up ocassionally for me. USR customer support leaves customers wondering sometimes, other times the information is right on.

Overall, excellent fast reliable performance. Follow my recommendations if you buy one!> DO NOT INSERT THE CD THAT CAME WITH THE MODEM < or use it since the software is out of date. Install the modem into your computer after downloading the latest driver step 1 below. 1. Go to the USR website and navigate to the 5610B Support Page and download the most recent Driver, (Microsoft Digitally Signed HQ tested.) This is worth the download alone, makes most systems more stable. (Once the file is downloaded and expanded, right click on the .inf file and select install! Then Install the modem in to your computer after! 2. Second, download the stand alone flasher to upgrade the programming in the modem, the "Firmware". 3. Last download the posted most recent program files from USR you may need.

5 Star Review   By member fleemanc - Sep 8, 2003

Strengths: controller based; solid as a rock

I have used this modem with Win 2K for the past three years and never had a problem with it (save for being fried by a lightning strike recently, but that was a problem with my UPS, not the modem). I have used the modem under heavy loads, while running an FTP server, and doing just about everything you could ever think of with a modem. Granted, my one and only experience with USR's tech support dept. came after the lightning strike - I called them to verify it was fried and they confirmed the diagnosis. The tech I talked to was friendly and helpfiul, as much as he could be given the circumstances. I cannot speak to the claims others are making about high system resource utilization (perhaps they have the Winmodem and just don't realize it?) but in the three years I've used this modem I've never seen it have any effect on my system resources nor any other aspect of my PC. I am replacing my burned out modem with a new one of the exact same variety.

5 Star Review   By member jcoolik - May 9, 2003

Strengths: No disconnections when computer is heavily loaded, or during prime time. The modem always connects. Download speed stands at an average 5-6Kb/s.

Weakness: It's hard to turn down the speaker when using the modem in Linux.

This is the best modem I've owned up to date. Unlike my former pathetic Motorola SM56 software modem, this modem does not disconnect, or not connect at all, when the computer is busy. I can safely leave it on for the night and be sure it will not disconnect until I tell it to. Generally, the modem gets excellent connection speeds and I've never connected to the Internet at speeds less than 49000 bps. The modem runs perfectly on Windows 2000, 98' and Debian Linux 3.0. For Linux users though, I suggest reading "How to set up your PCI modem in Linux", found at www.people.iup.edu/bcl.... Enjoy your new modem!

Strengths: V92 Tech.

Weakness: Will not work with all Motherboards.

Arter spending a bundle on this modem shipping and handling included I painfully found out that this modem will not work on my system bacause it has a Motherboard that causes some kind of conflict with this modem.I e-mailed USR and am still waiting on a reply, that was a week and a half ago.

5 Star Review   By member ZRRIFLE - Apr 2, 2003

Strengths: Much better connection than other modems I've tried. Worth the price.

Weakness: None so far, except my system seems to run hotter. Not sure if that's the modem's fault, though (it's a controller-based modem).

Was quite surprised (and delighted) at improved connection rates and performance with this modem. I tried other brands (Creative Blaster and Diamond SupraMax), but they didn't cut it. Highly recommend, if you're still sticking to 56k dial-up (as I am).

Strengths: Carries the USR stamp of approval, a value I now question.

Weakness: Modem only connects at 14.4 kbps w/ Windows XP. Driver update corrects only temporarily. USR Tech was able to help once with an added initialization, but this correction later fails. Sftware poor.

There are other modems out there, presumably better than this model from USR. Take a look at Zoom or Diamond modems. I'm dissapointed in my purchase of the USR Performance Pro PCI modem for the money.

1 Star Review   By member AlexanderAkulick - Feb 1, 2003

Strengths: It maintains a connection better than some other older modems, when it's working, and gives a V92 connection sometimes if you have an ISP with V92 connections. It works with XP 56K driver (pref.).

Weakness: Driver creates problems in XP Pro - has un-signed V92 driver - support is ludicrous - software will only perform some functions as advertised - Windows XP support is an outright lie!!! - NO GOOD!!!

I have found changing between XP 56k driver and back to the Robotics un-signed V-92 driver will re-start operation of the card when it stops working and will restore the caller id. feature. I recommend a Diamond V-92 card it's cheaper, installs better, and performs just as it should. I foolishly added a USR2216 and USR8022 (see reviews) and got a full realization of this company, all bad - avoid them - they are not to be trusted. Their products have not seen the proper R&D and they don't care. They come up with lies and excuses when questioned. As for ZRRIFLE, in time it will harass you also, and I am not surprised you noticed increased system heat after installing it as it is power hungry and processor intensive!!! My review uncovered a company that has few principles and no research and development. *** Update 10/01/03***As for others, they obviously do not have a USR5610B V92 as it had only recently been offered by USR at the time I purchased it and has NOT TILL YET been available for the 3yrs. stated elsewhere. *** Update 10/14/03 *** Well after 2 years USR finally saw fit to change the USR5610B Bios and Drivers. ABOUT TIME BUT TOO DAMN LATE and registered owners should have been notified!!! So I shall see, WHEN I"M NOT USING MY DSL, if it works correctly now at decent speeds and V92 functions and will let you know. Seriously, do not buy this junk if you have Windows XP or Linux RED HAT (I have both), the USR drivers are terrible!!! Repaired???!!! ***UPDATE 1/27/2005*** Well, USR tech service may have improved slightly and I am having excellent performance from my USR5450 and USR5416 wireless setup (using a USR8022 as my DSL gateway), but THIS USR5610B IS STILL A CLUNKER. I loaded all the latest USR supplied software and this modem card to three different systems and had the same results with each. The software caused shutdown issues on each computer (all were running Windows XP Pro). This is to say, they were very difficult to impossible to shutdown by Window's command (this was also the case in one non-updated Windows XP system with no other added software). Removing the modem's software restored normal operation to each computer and, of course, returned this card to the average 56Kbps. most any other 58Kbps. V92 modem card has. Dial-up worked fine, but I didn't bother to check how reliable the operation was as the software is obviously what gives this modem card its stated multiple uses. This modem card is the reason I now have DSL, so it was of some very small benefit as it caused me to quit using dial-up. I would like to use the Fax and Caller ID features but it's just not worth the problems for sending and receiving faxes. I just packed it, and put it away. Worth the $79 I paid for it? Definitely not! Get an external modem or a standard PCI card and just forget about the claims and added software features for this one. Better yet, just get a broadband connection if it's available.

Strengths: Modem worked well. Good speed and fast connect time.

Weakness: Software not great. Crashed on me during the flash process.

When the crash happened the modem immediately stopped working (which is understandable since there was no firmware). I emailed USR support to see if there was anything I could do to repair the modem without sending it back to the online dealer (too much hasle). They emailed me the next day saying that they could not handle my problem over email and to call them on their support phone number. When I talked to the support guy he told me that there was nothing that could be done except sending it back. He sent me a modem that day and told me it should arrive in a couple days. I have to send the old modem back only after I receive the replacement and the return shipping is paid. Great customer service. We'll see if the new modem works better than the first.

Strengths: Latest V.92 international Std, greater control over the internet, easy installation, customizable interface, gaming mode, modem on hold, the list goes on.

Weakness: None yet.

Getting disconnected oftenly while you are online has lil to do with your cable modem, check with your local telephone company. I greatly recommend This modem or any Usrobotics products which for many years have offered me reliability, no wonder is rated the #1 Selling Modem Brand.
