Strengths: very portable, fast processor, beautiful screen

Weakness: a little bit thick

Overall, this is a very good laptop. You can take it to anywhere. It comes with a fast Core 2 Duo processor, but if you need to run the program more quickly, you should upgrade the memory to 2GB. Fortunately, it is very easy to upgrade.

4 Star Review   By member bocephus12 - Oct 2, 2007

Strengths: Fast Processor. Nice Screen. Fingerprint Reader.

Weakness: 1GB Memory.(Should have at least 2GB) No Extended Battery Produced For This Model.

I have been really pleased with this laptop. I was able to get it at a great price. I was looking at the Dell XPS 1330, but for almost half the price I went with this Toshiba instead. I AM GLAD I DID. It is really light-weight as well. The screen is amazing. Overall I would give this Toshiba 4 out of 5 stars.

does a great job
5 Star Review   By megthered on ToshibaDirect.com - Sep 24, 2007

This is exactly what I was looking for after my other laptop died. I needed something light and small. This fits me perfectly. I take it with me and don't feel like I'm carrying around bricks. I've even dropped it and thought for sure it would be dead, but it was fine. I have no problems with this great machine.

Good Laptop at a great price
5 Star Review   By member imteddy - Sep 10, 2007

Strengths: Compact design, small screen, very light, nice features

Weakness: Windows Vista

Its a nice machine. Great processing power, enough hard disk capacity for all my needs. Very light and portable for my mobile needs. Speaker volume is excellent (better than my Sony Vaio FRV 26). I do not like windows vista, its irritating. System was easy to use right out of the box. I got it for under $700 which makes it a great buy. It also come with a finger print reader, which was not very easy to use, but its optional so its not a problem. Headphone and speaker jack are in front for easy use. I would highly recommend this machine to anyone who wants a compact useful machine.

4 Star Review   By kr00lplatinum on ToshibaDirect.com - Sep 4, 2007

I'm a student that must commute every day to school. My classes are 3 hrs long so battery life is very important to me. This laptop has excellent battery life, 3 hrs with wireless on and 4 hrs with wireless off. Some people have posted that the battery life is poor however you might want to call Toshiba. After 6 months my motherboard went out and was sucking my battery dry. It wasn't a huge deal because Toshiba fixed it for free! If you want a small and powerful computer you've picked the right one. I would also recommend that you upgrade the ram to 2 gigs if using vista. I have Ubuntu installed so it's not a big deal for me.

Almost perfect machine
5 Star Review   By maamgrey on ToshibaDirect.com - Aug 12, 2007

Of all my laptops (Dell, HP, and Toshiba), I like this one best. I love the size and portability. I drive to see clients all day and I use my laptop at each meeting. The only problem has been the extremely poor battery life. Even if I turn it off for a half-hour while I'm driving, it complately quits after about 2 hours of use. Has anybody had experience with the AC adapter?

4 Star Review   By Garnet on ToshibaDirect.com - Aug 1, 2007

As a whole, I like the performance of this notebook: the features, weight, size, price. But what I think should be really improved is the battery life. It has an unusually short one. Even the M55 I used to have lasts longer. Also, I wish I had an option to take WinXP instead of Vista. One of these days, I'm changing the OS. I just hope I wouldn't have a hard time looking for the drivers.

Good Laptop, Not very mobile
3 Star Review   By Trerarch on ToshibaDirect.com - Jul 20, 2007

I was attracted to this laptop due to its nice price and features. Unfortunately, I was replacing this laptop with an older laptop with a small screen and good battery life. When traveling I like a smaller laptop, compact size and long battery life. You're lucky if you get an hour of computing on this puppy's battery. So as they say, a word to the wise, if your looking for a laptop with long battery life this one isn't it. You can't even buy a high capacity battery with this laptop to ease the pain.

Nice Machine
5 Star Review   By member eddiel0727 - Jul 19, 2007

Strengths: Very compact, light and powerful, Fingerprint access.

Weakness: Built-in speakers were small and under-powered

Having been a long-time consumer of Toshiba's laptops, this is one of my favorite. It is very light, very fast and came with a suprising amount of useful applications. The laptop also includes a recovery CD, AS WELL AS A COPY OF WINDOWS VISTA. This allows you to wipe the machine clean, install only windows and then download the pieces of software you want from the Toshiba website(which I highly recommend for best performance). Most other manufacturers DO NOT do this and I praise Toshiba for the effort.

Quality Laptop
5 Star Review   By bezime on ToshibaDirect.com - Jul 19, 2007

Good build quality, compact and light to carry. The only issues I had were finding the XP drivers after replacing vista and the Toshiba partition on the HDD which prevents Partition Magic (7 & 8) from working. These small issues are relatively easy to fix and don't detract from the product. However if Toshiba provided the XP drivers in the box rather than pushing vista, it would save a lot of time.

Excellent Machine
5 Star Review   By Matthew on ToshibaDirect.com - Jun 18, 2007

I have had this laptop for over two months and it has been great. I like the size and performance. Vista is a memory hog and Microsoft no longer supports my older version of Office, so these programs crash occasionally, but those are software issues, not Toshiba issues. The keyboard layout is fine, once you get used to the odd location for DEL, INS, and Windows and the missing right CTRL. The touchpad is small, but fine. The fingerprint reader works well. Overall, I've been happy with it.

Always Reliable Purchase
5 Star Review   ToshibaDirect.com

I have used Toshiba laptops since 1989. I have found them to be reliable and effective around the world. I have been in the mountains of South Brazil and in the Mountains of Banff, Alberta, Canada. My laptops have always performed well. This little Toshiba that I have now is my steady work horse and it continues to perform like my other Toshiba laptops. My daughter used one of my old laptops all the way through her Masters in college. She retired it after graduation. If you are looking for reliability, then Toshiba is the name to call on.

The Toshiba name has always been my brand of choice. I have 3 Toshiba Laptops - All Satellites - and am well pleased with them. My U205 is the last one I have bought. I only wish my U205 had bluetooth. I have a HP desktop and I have had a Dell laptop, but my preference is my Toshiba Laptops. I hope I can buy a R400 Laptop next. I say KUDOS to all Toshiba Laptops. i will always stay with Toshiba.

Best laptop purchase
5 Star Review   By Logibella on ToshibaDirect.com - Jun 9, 2007

I shopped around for awhile for 12.1'' laptops. I wanted something that I could use on the road. I do a lot of traveling for work and it is perfect for that. I use my braodband card and with the great batttery life I am able to get everything accomplished. I work for a technology company and I bugged all of our techs for their imput on what I should buy. Boy were they right about Toshiba. In our company we own many brands of laptops. I seem to be the happiest one in the company with mine.

Got what I wanted!
5 Star Review   By Traveler on ToshibaDirect.com - Jun 9, 2007

This laptop is by far the best value for the money. I spent considerable time comaprison shopping and Toshiba had the best package of any of the major giants on the market. I do extensive travel for work and could not give up performance for the convenience of an ultra-light and didn't have to with the U205-S5057. It is light, fast, has the largest HD of anything else that is even close, has every feature I was looking for, and the toughness I want on the road. This outperforms my previous Dells in almost everyway.

Above Average Ultra Portable
4 Star Review   By drmike29 on ToshibaDirect.com - Jun 8, 2007

Having previously owned a 15.4" laptop, I felt that the 15.4" Acer was too heavy and too big to carry around on a regular basis. Going ultra portable to this Toshiba 12" Satellite 205 achieved the goal in giving me both a portable computer and a computer capable as a desktop replacement. The keyboard is easy to type on and the touch-pad is acceptable for short tasks. I still prefer a mouse for most of my computing and separately purchased a bluetooth mouse. I wanted a card that would fit into the PC Card slot as I had previously broken 3 USB hubs with my old computer. It's too bad that this computer does not come with built-in bluetooth. With all of the bluetooth accessories available now days, it should be standard to have built-in bluetooth in laptops. This laptop comes with Vista Business pre-installed, along with 1 MB RAM. While I didn't experience any system crashes with the initial set-up, perormance was not as good as expected. Upgrading to 2 MB RAM boosted performance significantly. I would recommend the additional RAM and wireless mouse to be your automatic upgrades to this unit. The speakers of this unit are below average with a tinny sound. That's too bad as I enjoy listening to music and was compelled to purchase speakers to use when this unit is at my home. Unit comes with built-in Wireless G and 10/100 Ethernet. I would prefer Wireless N, but don't have room for this in the PC Card expansion slot with the bluetooth card currently occupying this slot. 1 GB Ethernet would be a nice option to utilize speed of newer Gigabit routers. Finally, I was disappointed in the BATTERY 2 hour life-- this is supposed to be an ultra portable and having to use an AC power cord on the road certainly defeats the purpose of a portable laptop. An option for a longer-life battery is definitely needed. Overall I am quite satisfied with my purchase, but for individuals capable of spending $1k for a laptop, the other features that I mentioned that are needed: INTEGRATED BLUETOOTH WIRELESS N GIGABIT ETHERNET BETTER SPEAKERS ADDITIONAL RAM EXTENDED-LIFE BATTERY would make these units a 5-STAR and should only add $250 to the cost of the unit. Mike

Good, small format laptop
4 Star Review   By Sailrad on ToshibaDirect.com - Jun 8, 2007

I was looking for a small format, high resolution laptop. This really fits the bill. The screen is bright, sharp and widescreen. The laptop does get hot if run in full performance mode on your lap. Features abound and it is well constructed with solid hinges. The keyboard size is touch typeable but with out much travel or feedback. Little to no keyboard flex. Neat: 1. Real WiFi on-off switch. 2. Multimedia controls hard keys. 3. The screen. Gripes: 1. Battery life is, well, poor. It needs a larger optional battery pack. 2. All of the LEDs on the front are either blue or yellow. C'mon, green for good battery, yellow for low, red for recharge now. Blue means nothing

poor PC or bad OS? (or both?)
2 Star Review   By PhilR on ToshibaDirect.com - Jun 8, 2007

I have always had good experience with Toshiba and I had a Satellite before which was flawless, so I didn't hesitate when I needed to get a new laptop. I am not sure whether it is the machine or Vista - which I hate with a passion (and I am not a MS hater, I loved XP). But life with this machine is difficult. Signing in with the fingerprint reader is a hit and miss affair (more misses than hits). Once in, if it was connected to another network, it often needs a nudge to connect to an available network (which it may not recognize for quite a while). Vista and DRM is a pain, and it is not helped by the volume control which gives almost no feedback and causes some music apps to freeze if I try and adjust the volume with it. I like the display, the multi-card reader and the combo drive. The keyboard behavior is very odd. The cursor occaisonally jumps to somewhere else in the document - I thought I was brushing the touchpad, but I cannot reproduce it. All of a sudden your typing jumps to the middle of a previous line. The cursor flickers constantly as if it is busy, and typing at speed means dropped letters. I have no problem on other keyboards and the letters missed aren't consistent, so there is some problem somewhere other than just a bad keyboard. All in all my interaction fluctuates between irritated and totally frustrated. My last machine, a Sony TR1A, despite a flimsy keyboard was a joy compared to this machine. What a disappoitment.

Poor Battery and Performance
1 Star Review   By LL2Disappointed on ToshibaDirect.com - Jun 8, 2007

I brought this laptop because of its thin and light weight feature plus dual core processor. I found performance to be only fair at best. Battery life is also very poor. And a 9-Cell battery is not currently available for this model. So I found myself having to plug in AC power frequently to charge. Life no more than 2.5 hours even at "saver" mode. Should have gotten a thin/light with 9-cell battery that's available at similar price.

Love it...except the battery life
4 Star Review   By Sulu on ToshibaDirect.com - Jun 8, 2007

I love this machine. Its the best value for an ULTRAPORTABLE machine. The only reason I gave it a 4 stars overall is because the battery life is a little too less for a normal laptop, otherwise no complaints at all. My previous machine was a Toshiba too, lasted me for 4 years and I sold it for a pretty good price too. Another HIT PRODUCT Toshiba!!

nice laptop but...
4 Star Review   By Bradford on ToshibaDirect.com - Jun 8, 2007

I have had it about three weeks and hardly a day goes by when it doesn't crash. I hope its a Vista problem. Different programs crash it and then the bsod. Many times it has to check the HD before it will start again.Like I mentioned I hope its a Vista problem. I cant give a good recommendation until I stop having problems with it.

Good For the Price
4 Star Review   By Samson on ToshibaDirect.com - Jun 8, 2007

I have purchased mine for over 4 months and found that this is a little decent machine. Let's talk about the good side of it. First of all, it's small in size and light in weight make it a perfect solution for travel and school. I bring it to school and to trips everytime and happy with the size. As it is so little, you won't need a lot of space for your laptop, it's good if you brings it on the plant. Also this laptop is quiet when you switch to power saving mode. I've got about 3hr 10min after I turn the light to minimum with no other accessories plugged in. I've always format my system, like once a month. And it's doing a good job, too. Toshiba throw in a repair disc that helps me to format and reinstall the system. I have formatted mine about 3 times, and it takes about 1 hour each and you are ready to go. I would like to say it's a very handy disc. This is because I have been using some other brands, like HP Compaq and Asus, and their factory discs isn't work as well as toshiba's. Talk about something I don't like about it. The keyboard is not a very good one. I always encounter a problem that, when I type certain buttons it just won't response. Therefore I always have to go back and fix the word. I am using it to type this review now, and I have been fixing words back and forth a couple times already. On the other hand, the mouse pointer comes with it is too small. my finger feel pain after about an hour of use. I have been using notebook since I was in high school, and I just want to say that this one (mine is a toshiba S205-5057) is a great one. The config is up to date and the price is ok for this size of notebooks. I am quite happy about the purchase.

Small with Power!
5 Star Review   By DCSHAW on ToshibaDirect.com - Jun 8, 2007

I've owned 3 Toshiba laptops and still use my 17" P205. I bought this for travel and it's light and easy to pack. After using this laptop I realized it's also equipped with plenty of power, 160 Gig hard drive 1Gig memory, Duo Core processor and a nice little DVD/Burner. Although Visa is all you can get now when purchasing a new system, it run's smooth. I've run several programs simultaneously and no problems. Battery life can be extended by changing the power settings very quickly (Vista option). The layout of the USB connections, Firewire and switches are convenient. Keyboard is small, but what would you expect for a small unit. I love the TruBrite screen, and it seems to enhance the colors. I compared prices with the Sony Viao, if you want to spend another grand for a unit this size then the Viao is all there is. I'm not a Sony fan anyway so this was a no brainer decision for me. You won't be disappointed with this purchase.

pleased!
4 Star Review   By mellybelly on ToshibaDirect.com - Jun 8, 2007

I have recently bought a Toshiba and am pleased with this computer. It is light, convienent, portable, easy to use, fun to use, etc. The only recommendation I would have, change the pgup / pgdn with the home and end buttons. Other than that, I have been prettysatisfied with this computer.

Great asset to my writing career
5 Star Review   By Sarge on ToshibaDirect.com - Jun 8, 2007

This computer has a become a mainstay in my toolbox as a columnist and freelance writer. I use this unit almost exclusively because of its portability, smooth and almost flawless applications. Some of my best work ( and I believe this computer has the ability to turn out award winning work) has streammed from the full-size keyboard. The small size allows me to carry it all day if need be, is always a fast set-up when I need to get a story ready for e-mailing. I also only buy Toshiba because of the dependability. I have issues with Microsoft but an OS must be supplied so you have to go someplace for it. It's a great product.

Great little laptop
5 Star Review   By klo36009 on ToshibaDirect.com - Jun 8, 2007

Perfect for students and anyone on the go! It is light enough to carry easily and yet powerful enough for all my computer needs. I had planned on using it only for school and now find myself using it exclusively. My only caveat is that the battery life is just okay. I had to purchase a second battery to have enough power for my 4 hour classes.

Always liked Toshiba
4 Star Review   By reaver on ToshibaDirect.com - Jun 8, 2007

This is my second toshiba laptop and it is great. The only downside to this computer is that it cannot handle any programs that are graphics heavy. Other than that I would highly recommend this laptop. I wanted something small and compact and this fit the bill perfectly.

Great machine
5 Star Review   By Haughbe on ToshibaDirect.com - Jun 8, 2007

All I can say is....WOW! This laptop is great. It is my third computer that I've purchased and my second laptop...and it is by far the best out of all the machines. It is small, thin, lightweight, reliable and an excellent machine. At first I was slightly hesitant about the 12" screen size (my last laptop had a 15" display) but after using it daily, I can see that it is wonderful, and will probably never go back to anything bigger. It's size is perfect for being on the go as I always am. It's great as a student because it doesn't take up much room. The battery life is great for my purposes, and the screen is vibrant and clear. I will definitely be purchasing from Toshiba again in the future!

Love lite-weight size ~ heavy-weight performance!
5 Star Review   By Meggie on ToshibaDirect.com - Jun 8, 2007

I would have rated all topics excellent except the number 5 key is sticking. Besides that small problem this computer is fabulous! I am a *use it all over the place traveling fool* and find this size and weight excellent......great for a ladies smaller hands and lesser grip. The graphics and music are terrific and I have been very happy with my purchase. Would happily reccommend to anyone interested in a Toshiba! Thanks Yall!!!!

So far, so good!
5 Star Review   By IrishAdvantage on ToshibaDirect.com - Jun 8, 2007

This is my first Toshiba, hurriedly acquired after my Sony Vaio was stolen while traveling. I'm very happy with every aspect of it -- except Windows Vista. (Being on the bleeding edge of a new O/S isn't much fun.) The Toshiba itself has performed flawlessly, and it's much faster than my less-than-3-year-old (and much more expensive) Vaio. Battery life is about three times as long. And the size/weight -- priceless! One minor gripe: it doesn't open up a full 180 degrees, which required a different laptop stand than I'd been using. I/O jacks are conveniently placed, and the cost of a second AC adapter (a must for road warriors) is reasonable.

Good for Home Use
4 Star Review   ToshibaDirect.com

If you buy this product with the standard features, make sure you buy an extra battery. The battery life is low, even when set to conserve energy. However, it is very light weight and easy to carry. My wife has take it to work several times when her computer crashed and had no problems, so long as she was plugged in. Vista is annoying, but Toshiba can't regulate that. I recommend for your average home user who likes the portability of a laptop, but doesn't need to work on it without plugging it in for long periods of time.

W O W
5 Star Review   By Wugu on ToshibaDirect.com - Jun 2, 2007

I still can't believe my eyes what Toshiba can do. This piece of laptop it is just incredible. This is my 4th laptop so far and my third from Toshiba. I am crazy about technology and i will always spend my last penny on this field. My first 12" laptop and i don't think i will ever change it with larger laptops. The features, size and price are excellent. I would recomend this laptop to all my friends and people who needs performance, ultraportable and great price laptops. Thank you Toshiba. You're the ONE.

5 Star Review   By SANDY on ToshibaDirect.com - May 12, 2007

Before buying this laptop I bought an Apple macbook 13.3" it has very limited portability compared to this machine. Macbook was heavy as well. Since I bought this machine from best buy for $1249.99 plus tax. It's definately worth buying this laptop display is great keyboard is nice. It's very stable with windows vista. Overall it's a good buy. Before spending 2-3k on Sony one should look for this owesome machine.

Great laptop for portability!
5 Star Review   ToshibaDirect.com

Bought this laptop to be my computer for school to do online work and to write papers. Didnt do much shopping around just knew i wanted a computer that was small and was about the same or better than my current desktop which i bought August of 2006. Only been using it for a day or so but its a great laptop and is alot nicer than the compaq laptop it is replacing. Seems to be worth what I paid for it. Even for the small screen it is still a decent size to be able to see what i am doing and not strain to read what is on the screen. The keyboard took a little getting used to but ive gotten use to where some of the keys a placed so I'm not hitting the wrong key all the time. Hopefully this laptop provides many years of reliable performance that the compaq lacked.

Overall, great!
5 Star Review   By Daniel on ToshibaDirect.com - Apr 14, 2007

I've used several notebook computers, mainly ThinkPad. This is my first Toshiba notebook and it came with Vista. I bought this one because it's light and small, and there is an installment plan in Best Buy. Except that sometimes the DVD-ROM does not read an audio CD, I encountered no trouble. A reviewer said the 2GB of RAM is not enough for Vista. I doubt so. I usually have 3-5 applications (Outlook, FireFox, Acrobat, Messenger, Word) on and Task Manager shows that usage of physical RAM is around 60-90%. If you find it slower than other Vista, probably it is due to something else. Though the keyboard area is small, the locations of the keys are pretty intuitive and convenient; this is better than the ThinkPad that i used. I seldom use the battery. But it is required to rate. So I rated 4 starts. You should not rely me on that. The performance rating is relative to office/educational use, with occasional photo-editing or media usage. Actually you can check out the performance rating in Control Panel in Vista. I called the support once and people there were courteous.

its okay...but could be better
2 Star Review   By yami on ToshibaDirect.com - Mar 23, 2007

I purchased this 12' notebook appromiately three weeks ago and the system has crashed about 4 times since purchased. 1024MB is definitely not enough to run Vista....smoothly at least. The notebook is very powerful for its size but running Vista is horrible. The battery life is pretty much useless. It last appromiately two hours, even when its turned off. If the wireless switch is turned off, it last a little bit longer. Size is really nice but for my first laptop, and Toshiba's first 12' notebook, it's okay but it could be better.

EXCELLENT Portability!
5 Star Review   By Fingerz on ToshibaDirect.com - Mar 5, 2007

I have purchased two Laptops with-in two days of eachother, one for the home, 15 in. widescreen, and this one, the 12 in. widescreen, and it was the best of the two choices. (Which is why the other one stays at home) It's a perfect PC for an On-The-Go person such as myself. I carry it in my back-pack on a daily basis, and it's wireless ability is fantastic. I'm able to keep up with my internet business where ever I go! It's my best Toshiba purchase, yet! Fast, Reliable and Compact!
