Great for what it does.
Well so far I'm pretty happy with my chromebook. If you're looking for a simple laptop on a budget, the little $250 samsung chromebook is hard to beat. When the chromebook is closed, it is off, and in the time it takes to open the screen, it is on and you're online. Perfect. 100 gigs of Drive storage is a nice bonus.
If you don't know what that means - Drive is google's cloud storage service, it's like having an online hard drive that you never have to worry about crashing or losing your data. You can access it from any computer with an internet connection, and 100gb is a lot of space to work with.
I haven't found the small internal hard drive to be restrictive at all. In fact, I haven't put anything on the internal drive. The way Drive is integrated into the filesystem, there is absolutely no difference between browsing your hard drive and browsing your Drive. I would like to see dropbox integrated into the system as well as Drive has been.
I already use google docs as my office suite, and it does work offline on the chromebook. While google docs is slightly limited, it should still be more than enough for the average user's needs. Besides, with apple about to release iWork for iCloud, you should have a full-powered cloud-based office suite option in no time.
In fact, unless you are hoping to use this thing for extreme gaming, intense graphic design or demanding video editing, there really isn't much that you can't do with it. Just browse the chrome web store, you'll probably find something that does what you need. Pretty much any web-app on the internet is at your disposal - there are image editors, vector drawing and graphic design software, floorplan designers, CAD software, music trainers... there are even cloud based video editors... Check out the "offline" category to find apps that support offline use.
There are lots of games in the store, although I haven't really tested any yet in depth to see if anything runs smoothly. I tried to open one driving game, and it locked up immediately, but I'm sure less demanding games will run just fine. Chrome has a built in task-manager that pops up to notify you your tab is not responding, and to let you "kill" the page.
I was thrilled to find spotify's brand new web-player was already supported, and it works fine, although I think spotify needs to spend a little more time on the interface. I would like to see a universal play/pause/skip button integrated into chrome os, either as a shortcut key or a widget of some kind...
App switching right now feels like switching blind, I understand an "alt-tab" visual preview feature is in the works, but it hasn't been released yet.
The "browse as a guest" feature works very well for when users are logged out. Setting up an actual user account is as easy as logging in to their google account.
Your tech-illiterate grandmother could learn to use chromebook as easily as she could an iPad, and they cost a lot less. And they might appreciate the webcam for video hangouts with the family or taking goofy pictures too
