Cool buy for this Acer TM4222WLMI
4 Star Review   By member yilinc - Jul 27, 2006

Strengths: Core Duo Processor, 120GB HDD, 15.4 Wide XGA, 1GB memory, fast, very quiet overall, cool appearance.

Weakness: HDD is ATA-7, not SATA, and comes with FAT32 format. Applications pre-installed are limited.

Well, I just bought one Acer Travelmate 4222 from the staples.com and the total I paid is $856 (shipping is free but there is tax). It looks better than my former Dell Latitude. The price is definitely attractive for this type of specifications - Intel Core Duo T2300 1.66GHz, 120GB HDD, 15.4 WXGA, 1G Memory, and DVD+-RW... I tried to search Dell Inspiron E1505 with similar specification, and the price is pretty close, with Dell slightly higher (of course, that might not be the case since Staples offered $100 discount). The thing is, I have bad experience with Dell, I had a Dell Latitude 600 for 3 years, and I changed mother board once, the keyboard once, and the latches once... both build quality and technical quality seem to be unreliable. I had 3 years waranty on Dell and the Dell service is really good. Acer on average I believe is slightly better than Dell, but I only had the laptop for about several days and can't really compare at the time being. After you buy this computer, you better do some adjustments: convert FAT32 to NTFS format, by using cmd--->convert function; SATA is not significantly better than ATA drive, about 5% faster, and I don't think it causes any problem in speed because normally you won't notice the difference. The noise of the HDD is normal and just okay for me at the beginning, but since the HDD is a Hitachi one, I used the Hitachi Acoustic Management software (downloadable from a web site) to adjust the HDD noise, it just became almost totally neglectible for me, even during the night. (by the way, I have a high standard for noise reduction, my standard would be the noise is neglectible during the night when I am alone in the room doing some work with my laptop. I'll hate it even if it's just normal crunching noise when the HDD is reading data). For a laptop, I care about the speed and the noise very much, so this Acer I believe is going to offer me such capability with a cool appearance and a good price. I think overall I am satisfied with the purchase. If you are going to buy this laptop, I suggest you do two things after you get it: convert FAT32 to NTFS (takes about 5 minutes); use hitachi accoustic management to reduce the noise of the HDD (even it's already okay, but just in case you are a geek seeking almost perfect silence just like me.

Travelmate TM4222WLMi Notebook
4 Star Review   By member dmickey - Jul 26, 2006

Strengths: 1 Gig of RAM

Weakness: Strange layout of the keyboard and lack of wordprocessing software

I bought this computer so that (among other things) I could play some of the more recent games (such as GUN.) The game plays beautifully on this computer. The display is large (15.4 inches) and is very sharp. Overall an excellent buy and one that I would definately recommend.
