Housed in a shiny black case and sporting a single blue power LED indicator, the Western Digital Passport is one of the most stylish portable drives we've seen, and at $129, it's a good bargain. The 120GB USB drive weighs in at a mere 3.7 ounces and measures just 5.1 x 3.1 x 0.6 inches.

Good drive
4 Star Review

Strengths: Easy to use. Plug & play. Acts like another hard drive. Does not need external power connection.

Looking for a simple method to backup my computer. This is it. Would be better if the Ghost or similar could use it. The provided software has a associated cost, isn't purchase of the drive enough?

Horrible Drive!
1 Star Review   By member artleaf2 - Oct 24, 2008

Weakness: Everything!

I've used 120G passport HD for a year and suddenly my computer doesn't recognize this HD so I lost all valuable datas. However I tried to re-format this HD to re-use but it still doesn't work. So I called WD customer support and they said 1 year warranty is expired and they tried to charge for just talking to technical support so I complained it so they gave me free one time tech support! And I did what they said and still didn't work and they said there's no way I can fix this problem and they can't help me either. So I had to throw away. Do not buy this HD!!!!

120GB nice bargain
5 Star Review

Strengths: Compact, nice shell

Weakness: The case is gloss. I would have preferred matte.

Overall no problems with this product. It has good memory for the price and has worked without fail so far (I have saved about 30GB on it). Again it is compact and light (easily portable).

Passport External 120GB Hard Drive (USB 2.0, 5,400 RPM, 2MB).

Strengths: Friend said WD is the only way to go.

It was a gift, and the recipient says it works great. A techie said that it was a good deal, so I purchased it. So far, so good! It is really cool looking, and little.

Disaster
1 Star Review

Strengths: Zero

Weakness: A lot

As soon as I started using WD 120 GB, I started loosing my files. When I lost 2 hours work I figure out that this is happen only if I want to save file straight to WD. I call to manufacturer. As a result, representative decided hard drive is OK, but agree to replace it with refurbished. I paid full amount for new WD, this is outrageous by me. Full range of problems: 1. I have 3 computers, two with XP and laptop with Vista. It works OK only with older desktop, but it can't recognize it through USB hub. It must be connected straight to the computer, which is not very easy. It can't be connected to the other computer with hub also. 2. It is possible to loose file even after using it for 5 minutes. File will be lost completely, not only new data. 3. The only one way to use this WD, is to copy file on desktop, work on it and copy back.

Great idea -- if the product lasted and/or Western Digatal's Customer Service was effective
1 Star Review   By member PatCos4 - Sep 4, 2007

Strengths: small size, weight, portability, capacity

Weakness: Product failed after about 10 hrs power on; lousy customer service

I love the drive, but I’m here to tell you all that Western Digital is one messed up company. My drive crashed and needs to be replaced (under warranty). It took 4 business days, not the 1 business day the web site promises, to get an email reply. The instructions were incomplete and it took several message exchanges (2 more days) before I got adequate instructions to confirm the drive is unusable. I got an RMA, paid $20 extra for overnight shipping for a replacement drive, and still have not received the replacement drive over a week later. Their web RMA status page lists the ship date, but no shipper tracking number. When I call in, my call is either dropped or they are willing to keep me on hold with no hold time indication until I have to do something else and drop out of the queue. When I finally did get to talk to a CSR after more than 10 minutes of hold time, he indicated that the replacement drive was not shipped on the date that the RMA web page says, but he cannot provide a tracking number. Bottom line: don’t trust Western Digital! If you're data is valuable, use a reliable back-up as well.

Fail.
1 Star Review

Strengths: Nice design, compact, portableFail

Weakness: Unreliable, fails

I got this about three months ago and at first, it was great. It was fast, worked well with my laptop and I had no problems. Then, without warning, it failed about two weeks ago. Windows device manager recognizes it and says that there are no problems with the drive, but also labels it as "unreadable". The drive no longer spins up, only sits there quietly when plugged into the laptop. This is completely unacceptable but there isn't much I can do about it now. If I were to buy another external hard drive, I would go for something that was more reliable.

Nice Drive
4 Star Review

Strengths: Small, Plenty of space and Cheap.

Weakness: the so call 22 inch cable is actually 22 cm. way too short.

I bought this to move large files especially virtual pc files. I love it so far. However, the cable is only around 9 inches which works great for a laptop but not a desk top sitting under the desk. So far it worked on all of my computers on all operating systems from 98 to xp pro without a problem. running Virtual PC sessions on it is a dream, it frees the main drive on the system and I can take my development work anywhere without having to install the development software on 10 pcs.

Good, but some flaws
3 Star Review   By member Lolillo - Jul 4, 2007

Strengths: Looks good, quiet, cool, rather fast.

Weakness: Easily scratches, WD Sync crashes, Activity LED died...

I've been using this product for 2 months now, and it has its strengths and its weaknesses. On the good side, it does what it's intended for, keep some backup, just in case. The drive looks good on the desk, is absolutely quiet, cool and is truly plug n' play. I keep in it files for my work laptop and my home laptop, It was the greatest thing to have when I had to reinstall Windows from scratch. It's not as fast as you'd expect, but that's probably because my laptop's Bios default was to keep the USB ports to the 1.1 standard. The bad comes next: the beautiful shiny surface scratches too easily, I have it in a pouch and I'm very careful, but no matter how much I am, there are several scratches on the surface. The cable it came with, is truly short, so if you do not intend to use it exclusively with a laptop you'll need to purchase another cable or use your digital camera's one. At work my laptop sits on a docking station, so I had to get another cable. The activity led just died today for no particular reason, I though the drive was damaged, but it still works, I just can't tell by seeing the rather good looking blue LED. What really bothers me, is the constant crashing of the WD Sync software, no matter how much I update it it keeps crashing, and I'm afraid for my data. I guess that for the time being I' copy all the data to my hard drives, and then recopy it using True crypt, the bad, I won't be able to access my data on all computers. If anybody knows about some descent synching software, please reply. Hope this helps someone...

Great drive but unreliable for large file writing
2 Star Review   By member artich - Apr 17, 2007

Strengths: Great drive. Easy to carry. Good for the price.

Weakness: Unable to handle large file writing.

I formatted the drive with NTFS and it hanged my computer, both XP and Vista PCs, whenever I copied a 10GB virtual disk file over to the drive. Readig is OK but writing always seem to be a problem when you have a single large file. Any developers who plan on using it store VPC images should not use this drive.

Fast and durable
4 Star Review   By member NicN - Mar 30, 2007

Strengths: Fast, good looking and durable

Got this just before X'mas and had been using it for a few month. I used it to transport big files by also kept it plugged in to my pc 24x7 for additional storage and so far the unit had held up great. It is very quiet when running and stayed cool despite it is on all the time. Fast fast access via USB 2.0. The blue led light ring on casing is a soothing reminder that unit is on and running and not too bothersome in dark at night.

Sleek Design
5 Star Review   By member rngai - Mar 30, 2007

Strengths: Light weight and fast.

Weakness: Case not included.

Have owned this for a while and used it on my trip to save pictures and videos I took. Unit is quite well constructed and light weight. Plastic casing contribute to the light weight but do not feel filmsy. Ports opening came with cover that protected it from dirts in transport. Transfer is quite fast with USB 2.0. I wish they would have including a casing for it and the cable. But instead that is offered as an accessory for $14.99. Nonetheless a worthwhile investment if you need the portability.

Beware PowerBook users
1 Star Review   By sstotes on OnSale.com - Mar 16, 2007

Strengths: Works with PC

Weakness: Does not work with PowerBook G4

I purchased this for its convenience and size. I liked the idea of not having the extra power cord to deal with. However, the drive will not work with my PowerBook. They sell an optional cord but they are out of stock and it would amount to another $20 to the cost of the drive. I feel mislead by a company I trusted.

Passport External 120GB Hard Drive
5 Star Review   By member stone14z - Mar 9, 2007

Strengths: Small, convenient and easy to use.

Weakness: None noticed

This is a great little drive for performing backups of laptop computers. Just plug it in and the system immediatley recognized and configured it. After that, I was just a click away from backing up my laptop. This drive has enough space to backup all the laptops around the house.

Great Little Drive !!
5 Star Review   By member Dannykirk - Feb 19, 2007

Strengths: Holds tons of data, truly portable, easy USB connection

Weakness: None Yet

I use this device to store all my digital movies, pictures etc, these files can go as high as 4GB or more to play on my computer or transfer to DVD. The only problem I have read is that some laptops do not have the power in their USB ports to power this hard drive, my toshiba powers it beautifully!! Now you can carry all your data around and share with friends.

4 Star Review   By member hotboy2k4 - Feb 4, 2007

Strengths: 111 GB!!! No AC adapter needed; small size

Weakness: Maybe I formatted it wrong, but I can't get it to write from a Mac

I love it!!! 111 gigs and it's small enough to fit in a pocket. A must have for PC users with low disk space. The software isn't all that great, but if you format it you can bypass the software and work it like a flash drive.

Western Digital Passport External 120GB Hard Drive (USB 2.0, 5,400 RPM, 2MB)
4 Star Review   By member labens - Feb 2, 2007

Strengths: Large capacity; reasonable price; super quiet; no "warranty void if removed" stickers on the case, if you're wanting to remove the drive to upgrade your laptop.

Weakness: USB powered (does not work on older laptops), case is difficult to open if you want to remove drive, case edges are angle ( /__/ ) so you can't stand it sideways.

Like most other 2.5" portable drives, it only comes with a single USB cable that is supposed to be bus powered. But this doesn't work on most older notebooks and you will need to plug it into a powered hub or purchase a different cable from Western Digital ($9.99 + s/h). Overall, I like it better than the 80GB ION drive I purchased a few months earlier, seeing it didn't cost much more and has 50% more space. It's a great drive for backing up several laptops or storing lots of files/music that you want to have protable.

Stylish, very portable, EXCELLENT drive!
5 Star Review   By member rossoneril - Jan 17, 2007

Strengths: Large capacit, stylish design, light weight, no power needed

Weakness: no travel case included, easy to get small scratches on the surface

Large capacity: 120 GB gives me flexibility on storing most videos, pictures, and data that I need for trip, even long ones (> 1 month and up to 6 months). Light: very light that I can carry it in my camera bag. Stylish design: much better looking than many other drivers and also those case sold alone; but a traveller's case would be better to protect the surface, which is easy to be scratched Reading/Writing speed: good for me, never had any issue with the transfer speed Power: no extra power needed, but you need plug it directly into the USB port from your laptop (it happened once for me that it did not power up when I connected it to USB port from a PCI card). Overall, I think this is a great product, and highly recommended!

Passport Ext. HD Vs. Simpletech Ext. HD
5 Star Review   By WD Passport Ext Hard Drive on CompUPlus - Dec 27, 2006

Strengths: Passport NEW 160 GB HD = FAST, accurate data transfer with Simpletech's 120GB HD slo-o-o-w as mola-s-s-es! My old 40 GB Passport makes Simpletech's NEWEST 120 GB ext hard drive look like a snail!

Weakness: None noted except maybe Western Digital could provide an improved, alternate "back up utility" to replace Retrospect Express - like Acronis True Image! (wishful thinking!)

NOTE: Costco in Kansas City market NOW offer Passport's NEWEST 160 GB external hard drive at just $129.99 which WITH tax is still lower "delivered" than any current "online" shopping site price as of December 27, 2006.

Strengths: Small, cute

Weakness: Highly fragile

I bought this 50 days ago. Suddenly, my laptop stop recognize this device. I connected Windows Machine. Windows machine was trying to find "Cypress AT2LP RC42" instead of 'WD Passport", which does not exist. Anybody who are thinking to buy this product should google "Cypress AT2LP RC42 Western Digital".

First notebook external HDD, very happy so far
5 Star Review   By member arkleseizure - Dec 17, 2006

Strengths: Attractive design (if you care), good software for backup

Weakness: None so far

I've had a number of standard external HDDs, but this is my first portable one. I'm very pleased so far. Transfers were quick enough, and I like the fact that its USB powered. The included software for backing up data is very good, and makes file transfers very simple (and automated). It's nice to have so much storage capacity in a device that will fit in your pocket. So, not sure what else there is to say about an external HDD like this, but, overall its very good performance wise, it looks good, and the included software is efficient.

Excellent Portable Drive
4 Star Review   By member Wise User - Dec 13, 2006

Strengths: This product is very nice , it is small and sleek. The drive just works and that is the way it should be. It shows up in windows as a normal hard drive not a removable one.

Weakness: The plastic case is a little flimsy but it does make the drive lighter.

The drive just works and that is the way it should be. It shows up in windows as a normal hard drive not a removable one. It is very small and light. 120GB capacity is good it also comes with a case. The soft small blue led is nice and not too bright. It's fast at 33mb's throughput for single large files. No external power adapter needed. It is a nice addition to your laptop as additional storage.

Slick and light
3 Star Review   By member bngo - Dec 6, 2006

Strengths: It's very quiet and light

Weakness: Weak backup software, lack of second option to power with AC adapter.

It looks good and very quiet. Don't expect more than that. Compare with Maxtor which gives you a lot more this WD offer a very light and weak version of synchronization and data life diagnostic utility.

Beautiful Little Drive that won't work with my G4 Powerbook
4 Star Review   By member vancouverrob - Dec 4, 2006

Strengths: Sleek, beautiful. Great price per GB.

Weakness: Not the drive's fault, but G4 Powerbooks owners beware...

This drive will not work with your G4 Powerbooks or at least it did not work with mine. Bus power issue. There is a special Y-USB cable you can purchase. I didn't. USB ports one on each side of Powerbook too far away.) So I had to return it to Costco (Canada - where mine came with a carrying case!) who had it on for $119 Cdn ($104 USD). Such a nice compact little drive it looks like it should be a Mac product.

Great little drive
5 Star Review   By member SDTechDeals - Dec 3, 2006

Strengths: Small; sleek looking; works as advertised

Weakness: Expensive, but prices are dropping; may not work in all laptops

I have owned many flavors or portable hard drives, including the predecesor to this one (this is the 2nd generation of the Passport series). I like the black color, and it is a tad smaller than the 1st generation. I plug it in, and it works! What more can I ask for. I put multiple partitions on the drive, and plan to do ghost images of my laptop hard drive to it (I deliberately partition my laptop hard drive to have a smaller C: size). I did have to reformat to NTFS format. I like this better than the Maxtor series, as the included software on that is bloated and unnecessary. While a tad expensive, the prices are dropping, and the capacities are only getting bigger!

Buyer beware!
1 Star Review

Strengths: Size

Weakness: Power and not good at both platforms.

Buyer beware. This drive needs 1000mA to operate. Western Digital notes in their FAQ section that most computers only supply 500mA to USB ports (Answer ID 1296) They also note that it is possible to operate in both platforms with this drive but only after much formating silliness.

External portable USB drive: Passport 120GB
5 Star Review   By member syalki - Dec 1, 2006

Strengths: small, quiet, powered through the USB cable, fast

Weakness: in some cases a USB power adapter cable might be needed

This is a wonderful external USB drive. I needed a small drive that I can carry and use everywhere. This one is very small and light, so it easily fits my shirt pocket. It is powered through the USB port: you don't have to carry an external AC power adapter. Very easy to install: no driver is needed. I used it on: a Windows 2000 desktop, a Windows XP laptop, a Linux desktop (Red Hat) and an iMac. It worked smoothly on every platform. It has a good speed, in general 10 to 20 MB/s. When running it doesn't vibrate at all, and it is very, very quiet. It also doesn't become hot. It didn't work on a powered USB hub, because it didn't have enough power. In this case an additional Y USB cable is needed. Highly recommended !

I love this cute boy
4 Star Review   By member yaxingwei - Nov 29, 2006

Strengths: Cute, Slick, Portable, Good Speed

I have to say I love this drive. It's fairly small but with a big capacity. The speed is much faster than my previous 40GB one built with a Hitachi notebook drive and an enclosure.

WS 120 GB HD review
4 Star Review   By member baruflea - Nov 28, 2006

Strengths: Excellent drive. large capacity, fast access speeds, USB bus powered only--no AC adapter required.

Weakness: The casing could be sturdier, but it still withstands daily commutes and use. This is a minor criticism and should not sway a purchasing decision. Manuf. warranty could be longer (only 1 year).

I'm quite happy with the purchase. I'd recommend this drive to anyone who needs a large-capacity ultraportable HD. The drive is sleek, reliable, and worth consideration if you have a need for such a device. WD has proven to be rather reliable, as I've owned several other drives made by them and not had any problems. This drive's worth considering (and purchasing).

Beautiful Tiny Protable Hard Drive
4 Star Review   By member alanku22 - Oct 28, 2006

Strengths: Nice case with beautiful black coating Ultra compact design Easy to open the case

Weakness: Ship with only regular USB cable No Optional AC adapter port No carrying case

The case design is very compact and handy, I am able to open it easily and swap the hard drive inside. The coating of the case is very beautiful and can match lots of black gadget in the market like iPod and MacBook. The USB cable comes with the drive is a regular one port USB, which can not provide extra power for the drive, my laptop (Powerbook G4) for example, can not provide enough power this drive via just one USB port. I have to shop another USB Y cable for it.

WD Passport 120GB
5 Star Review   By member jtucker01 - Oct 20, 2006

Strengths: This Hard drive is outstanding. The design is elegant and sleek. The fact that it is powered by the USB bus is phenomenal.

I have about 7000 photos that are priceless to my family. I am able to lock this HD in a vault and not worry about losing these photos. It is one of the best investments that I have ever made. I was also able to take the HD to work and burn all of my files to blu-ray DVD. I have my photos on three different devices now. I couldn't think of a better way to protect media. I would definitely reccomend this product to anyone wishing to store files in a safe and effective manner.

WD Passport 120gb
5 Star Review   By member daweing - Oct 17, 2006

Strengths: Sleek design, light, portable, low power consumption, USB 2.0 powered.

Weakness: Price

I've owned its predecessor, the grey 60gb passport and found that the 60gb was too little for me. I upgraded and got the 120gb. This is a really great drive. As mentioned above, it has a sleek design, great durability, usb 2.0 powered. I carry it around with me all the time and it fits nicely in one of the pockets of my laptop bag. The only gripe I have about this is that the $/gb ratio is very high.
