Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1.5TB
4 Star Review  productwiki.com - Apr 9, 2009

Introduced earlier this year into Seagates external hard disk know as the Free Agent Desk, the 7200.11 1.5TB is the largest capacity boost to computer hard disks since January 2007 when Hitachi hit the 1TB mark. Finally available to buy on its own, the 7200.11 1.5TB drive contains 4 375GB platters spinning at 7200RPM, and can supposedly reach speeds of up to 120MB/s - an impressive feat generally reserved for niche drives such as the Western Digital Velociraptor which spins at 10,000RPM and only holds 300GB of data. Also impressive is its price, with an estimated MSRP of 184.99 the 7200.11 1.5TB remains well within spitting range of performance 7200PRM terabyte drives from competitors Western Digital and Samsung. Features Capacity: 1.5 TB (1536 GB), 4 x 375 GB platters Speed: 7200RPM, 120MB/s sustained transfer Cache size: 32MB Acoustics:2.7/2.9 bels (idle/active) Idle power consumption: 8W Warranty: 5 years ... PROS: (1) worlds best 5-year manufacturer warranty (requires you to buy the drive through an authorized reseller however) (2) great for storage (huge capacity, fairly low noise levels and power consumption) (3) inexpensive considering it is the only 1.5TB drive on the market at the moment (4) new record for capacity, beats earlier maximum capacity by a whopping 50% (5) available immediately from a large variety of retailers ... CONS: (1) aging 7200.11 core technology is inferior and actually quite poor compared to competition in some instances (superior in others) (2) marketing claims do not live up to real world tests

Programmed ot Autobrick
1 Star Review

Strengths: Woprks great until the warrantee runs out

Weakness: Programmed to autobrick

Seagate st31500341AS CC1H fw. Run and Run fast from installing any OS on this drive. You will get the click of death and if you do not clone it to a NON Seagate drive right away you are toast. Seagate buggered up the fw if used in boot and it will auto brick itself. Cloning to another seagate drive will have the source drive TURN OFF at 33%!!! WTF??? Regardless of backup software. RUN!

Seagate 1.5TB HDD external Expansion Drive
1 Star Review

Strengths: Compact and silent running. The Seagate name and reputation.

Weakness: Ability to perform as you would expect a product from Seagate to perform.

I have purchased not one, but two Seagate Barracuda Expansion 1.5TB HDD (silly of me in hindsight)and one internal HDD. The idea was for this HDD to replace an aging 250GB external HDD as a backup for family photos and personal information. Initally I purchased one just days prior to Christmas 2009 and took it home. Upon plugging it in as per the installation instructions, I noticed a clicking noise coming from the drive. It sounded suspiciously like the noise you get from a drive just prior to failure. As I had to leave on boxing day for a remote part of Australia, I decided to leave it, thinking that it was nothing serious. Upon returning home at the end of January 2010, the noise was still a serious concern. I purchased a second expansion HDD thinking it was a one off and had the same problem. So I googled the problem. Thinking that it might only be the expansion models, I purchased an internal Seagate 1.5TB HDD - this one would not even be recognosed by the computer despite attempting to format it twice - one formatting period took over 8 hours. Drives were returned to the point of purchase and money refunded. Interestingly enough, this is a common problem, which seagate have been quite silent on and infact removed unfavourable comments about the problem from their forum in 2009. Recent comments are found at the following link: forums.seagate.com/stx... I am now going to the Western Digital Caviar series. Not a happy customer and would not recommend this product to anyone. Also, Seagate don't seem interested in assisting their customers. I was an avid supporter of Seagate and thought that you could not get a better drive.

Didn't Work Right as an External Storage Drive w/My WinXP Pro System
1 Star Review   By drdarkeny on Mwave.com - Mar 17, 2009

Strengths: It's over 1 TB, price is good

Weakness: Slows my WinXP Pro system to a crawl while in my SATA enclosure, causes frequent system freezeups and crashes, doesn't save data

I had heard that there were issues w/this type of 1.5 TB drive, but mainly in using them in RAID arrays. As I was going to place it in an eSATA enclosure and use it as a storage/backup drive, I figured it would be fine. Unfortunately, it slowed my system to a crawl, froze it and locked it up every time I attempted to copy data over to it - so I had to return it after two days. :(

Re:Will not detect hard drive
5 Star Review

Strengths: My computer finally sees the hard drive. Hugh back up capacity. Allowed me to free up space on WD raptors so I could play more games, or just free up space on the other hard drives.

Weakness: Had to have admin privileges to assign hard drive letter, and format the drive.

Had this hard drive over a week, but only been able to use it the last 3 days. My computer had a hard time seeing the drive. Tried uninstalling drivers, and trying newer drivers but still would not work. Tried uninstalling hard drive and reinstalling it. No luck. Finally went into administrative options and was able to see hard drive and assign a drive letter and format the drive. Works great so far. I'm giving it a higher rating to off set the negative I posted a few days ago. I would purchase again knowing what I know now.

DO NOT BUY THIS DRIVE !!!!!
1 Star Review

Strengths: BRAND NAME

Weakness: TOTAL DRIVE FAILURE LOSS OF ALL DATA SEAGATE ASSUMES NO RESPONSIBILITY

Seagate knowingly continues to sell this failure prone drive despite their awareness of the defect. On their website they boast a failure rate of only around 10%...I guess thats an acceptable loss in the eyes of their bean counters. They will gladly send you a new drive and honor the warranty when you find you've been had. However...The loss of data is your problem. You should have backed up the data they'll say! Well seeing as I purchased this drive for backup. I guess I'm just SOL. Note on the same page where they admit the drive is defective...they have a link to their industry leading data recovery services....of course you will have to pay a hefty fee to get your data back...and they can do it. Nice Customer service. I'm with you Western Digital are far more reliable. C'YA SEAGATE

Decent drive - get updated firmware if needed
4 Star Review   By Ernie on Mwave.com - Jan 7, 2009

Strengths: Massive storage in single drive

Weakness: Needs updated firmware if early shipment.

Most recent shipments from Mwave have newer version of drive with newer firmware. Older version can get firmware update for RAID issue. Seems to work ok so far. We have drives where we updated firmware and they worked for some iSCSI work.

Seagate 7200.11 serious reliability problems
1 Star Review

Strengths: Lots of space

Weakness: Fails without warning after short service life (< 6 months)

Seagate has not admitted they have a widespread, serious problem with this drive. Worse, they continue to sell this product. See for example this forum link. forums.seagate.com/stx... System builders in the know have stopped using this drive series. User ratings in Newegg have shown a dramatic decline in the last while and marketplace pricing is reflecting the situation as potential buyers have become aware. Stay away from this product if you value your data.

Huge capacity at a great price
5 Star Review   By member nspot - Nov 24, 2008

Strengths: Massive storage space, single drive, NCQ

Weakness: Apparently bad in RAID setups

This drive is an awesome deal for the price. Got it at TigerDirect for $150. I haven't run any actual benchmarks yet on it, but have not had any problems copying files to/from and streaming video off of it. Lots of people on newegg are knocking it for hiccups in RAID configs. Something to do with an error in the firmware. While I have yet to test NCQ functionality, as my MB doesn't support it, I have to say that for now that the drive has been great. If for single drive storage, probably a safe buy. If for a RAID setup, I'd hold off until people online start to get newer revisions.
