Strengths: Fast. Reliable.

Weakness: More sensative to other computer problems than other brands.

I bought two of these drives to start with. Got one replaced because the Maxtor utilities indicated the drive was shot (which probably wasn’t true as I later decided). I was ready to exchange the second Maxtor 80MB drive as I did with the first drive after detailed testing. However, at the same time, I had other problems with the CD and DVD drives. Once these were fixed, the Maxtors worked fine. Maxtors do seem to be more sensitive to other drive problems on the computer as I described regarding CD and DVD players. Contact problems also cause problems in my house for some reason. Every Maxtor drive I have had problems with worked (from not starting the computer at all to failing to find files, partitions, locking up and other major problems) were fine after applying Deoxit (a specially designed contact/plug enhancer for digital equipment, found on the internet) to the 80 pin plugs and sockets on both the Maxtor and DVD and CD drives. I think I did this with at least 3 or 4 Maxtors and they went from being "junk" to working flawlessly. They are great drives and have never had a bad one (I was sure of) out of about 8 or so Maxtors I have owned.

Strengths: Speed.

Weakness: Dead fast.

I bought 2 of this 8mb buffer ATA133 hard drive. I tested it with "hdparm" under linux. It is substantially faster than the 2mb buffer hard version. However, one died a couple of months later; the other died 13 months later, whereas the warranty is only one year. In contrast, my Maxtor 80gb 2mb version hard drive still works fine (more than two years), though slower than the 8mb version drives. I also noticed in Taiwan, the 2mb version sells slightly higher than the 8mb version. I guess this is why.

Strengths: only ata-133 brand

Weakness: Worthless quality

Pure garbage. I bought four of these and put in a striped & mirrored RAID configuration. Each stripeset has bad sectors so the mirror had to be broken. So at least 2 of the 4 drives are bad. I had same problem years ago w/ a couple other of their drives. Exchanging these for Western Digitals.

Strengths: S P E E D !!!

Weakness: N O N E !!!

Maxtor was first to develop these high speed drives offering them for sale some 3 years back. Using the necessary 133 Promice PCI card as motherboards at that time did not provide 133 DMA support they made dramatic time cuts to lengthy program runs and were extremely reliable having never failed in any way under heavy continuous use. I will continue to use Maxtor drives as they are still the industry leader and continue to offer superior products at reasonable prices. I USE RAID STRIPING AND MIRROING AND NO MAXTOR DRIVE HAS EVER HAD A BAD SECTOR OR CAUSED ME ANY PROBLEM AND I HAVE USED MORE THAN A FEW ON MANY SYSTEMS! ***UPDATE 12/20/04*** Well all my Maxtor 8Mb. buffer drives are still running perfectly 24/7,as are my 2Mb. buffer version 80Gb. drives, after years of service in heavy constant use. So well in fact, I now use the newer 133DMA 160Gb. 8Mb. drives also. The 8Mb. buffer chips really show off their performance on these new larger platters. What do I attribute such good service to? Proper installation and PC maintenaance - weekly defragmentation, file back-up, and good program removal and installation procedure. Those 2Mb. buffer versions are just a few dollars cheaper and slightly quieter using their slower factory read write speed setting which can be changed in both models using Maxtor's available free software.

Strengths: speed, stability, bundled software

Weakness: noise

I bought 2 of these drives and built a RAID-0 array with them. The MaxPlus 3 bundled software did a perfect job of mirroring my boot drive to my new 160Gb array, and their performance so far has been most impressive. They're a bit louder whenm accessing data than the 40Gb DiamondMax 8 drive that they replaced, but their speed more than makes up for it. In fact, SiSoft Sandra software rates their performance in my RAID-0 array 25% HIGHER than a 15000 RPM SCSI drive! I love them!

Strengths: Great drives. Handles a high load and great on performance.

I would say these are top IDE 133 drives in the industry. The failure rate is very low. Speed is good and is a sound alternative to SATA drives which really do not perform any better.
