I needed an external enclosure for...
Strengths: Both USB 2.0 and Firewire compatibility. Supports up to 300GB drives. Has a power button (Very good considering most external drives don't). Relatively slim design.
Weakness: Plastic exterior does not help for heat conductivity, and small fan has no breathing room underneath enclosure. Literally one too many wires (power plug is composed of two wires rather than just one).
I needed an external enclosure for a hard drive to use on my laptop since the alternatives would be cost prohibitive (laptop hard drives are still expensive, and external hard drives are very expensive). Of all the enclosures I looked at, this one had pretty much everything I wanted.
Support for any current hard drive size (up to 300GB), which would allow me to keep using it in case of future upgrades. It also supports both USB 2.0 and Firewire, which allows me to take and use the drive anywhere.
The drive was pretty easy to set up, requiring only common sense to put it together. Although some instructions would've helped because it's not just straight-forward. I spent a few minutes struggling to get the top on when I realized I needed to place the top on first, and then attach the plastic tabs, instead of vice-versa. Also, because of its design, swapping hard drives isn't a very quick process. I also didn't like the fact that the outside of the enclosure was plastic and not metal (as it appeared to be from pictures), since heat can become a problem in any enclosure, and the fan is situated in a poor spot. There is no space under the enclosure for the fan to do its job.
Aside from those negatives, the enclosure was very easy to use. No driver installation is necessary for Windows XP SP1, you just plug it in and you're ready to go (assuming the drive you're using is already formatted).
The design could use some improvement, but I still consider it superior to the competition out there.

Strengths: Simple to install drives. It works.
Weakness: Inconsistent results. Difficulty getting computer to recognise hardware installed.
I own two of these. One exclusively USB 2.0, the other a USB 2.0/1394 combo. I use one with a DVD writer and the other with a HDD for my laptop. They stack pretty well on top of each other. Drive installation is pretty simple, just connect the cables, screw it in place, put the top on, and it's done. For some reason the newer enclosure I have told my PC and Linux computers that the HDD installed (160GB) in it was a 2TB drive!! It said the same thing for a Mac. So I swapped the enclosures around and the problem was fixed, but it's still peculiar. I don't think this is a fluke thing, because I have never been able to get the enclosures to recognize the full speed of the DVD burner I have. The computer sees the correct model number DVD burner, but thinks it is only a 4x when it is really an 8x. Bottom line, these enclosures work, but they can be a bit buggy.

Strengths: Works OK with Nec3520A DVD burner.
Weakness: Poor assembly.
Had to RMA first case. One of the drive power wires had insullation shaved off from a razor sharp reinforcement strip alonge the case edge. The circuit board shorted on first power on.

Strengths: This Unit works great! Easy hook up, works with any cd-rom or writer, or dvd-rom or writer.
Weakness: The plastic strips that hold the unit together on the sides seem fragile.
I bought this enclosure to hook a dvd writer up to my laptop and was very impressed with the simple user friendly instructions. I was able to install the dvd drive myself (and not have to bug my dad, the computer programer, to help me.) The drive seems to work perfect through the unit

I have owned 5 of these enclosures...
Strengths: Easy to install drives into.
Weakness: Serious problems with DVD writers
I have owned 5 of these enclosures over the last 6 months. The three most previously purchased simply don't work with DVD Writers. I've tried three brand new ME-320U2 enclosures and two different DVD writers on three different computers. The results are completely consistent. The two older enclosures (about 6 months old) work fine with both writers (Sony DRU-500A and Pioneer 106D) with all three computers. The three newer enclosures (about 2 weeks old) all fail with both writers with all three computers. The design has changed and is evident when looking at the circuit board. The newer design simply doesn't work. I get SCSI command errors using Nero. Old enclosures work under identical conditions. No reply from Welland's tech help to my e-mail.
