It is going back!
1 Star Review   By ThomNKelly on Sony - Official Store - Feb 21, 2014

My wife and I were so excited to get this player. We had a RoKu, and we were happy with it, unless we wanted to watch something that was not on our little magic box. For that we plugged in our laptop, and streamed on the 70 inch. It was apparent, since we were hooking up our laptop a lot we needed to get a device that would allow us to access the internet with out hooking and unhooking the laptop. We walked into BestBuy, and my wife went right to the device. It looked great, the box was compact, the sales rep told us it has a QWERTY keyboard and voice control. We were excited. that and a HDMI cable and we were ready to go. We hooked up the device, and it was really easy to hook up, but then things started to go south. The device was slow. We have Fiber Optic Cable Internet, so it is lightning fast, but the device kept spinning. The shows we were watched were harder to find. We had to sign up for PlayOn, so we could watch Hulu and not even Hulu plus (which we have a membership for). It became clear to us, after three hours of work, this was not the device for us. It was the consensus of this family unit, we hate this device. It is going back to BestBuy and we are going back to our RoKu. My daughter did find one thing about this device (she is the optimist of the group): The remote is cool.

Garbage
1 Star Review   By Konen on Sony - Official Store - Jan 16, 2014

This this sucks! The fact that Sony refuses to update their software in this it is in Android 3.2. It should be on software 4.x I love if Sony carried from their customers then we would see updates. You can't even watch Hulu. What type of "smart/android" TV is that?

web browsing is disappointing
3 Star Review   By sambuca1970 on Sony - Official Store - Dec 23, 2013

I've tried to open a few pages while web browsing and they ask for a newer version of Adobe Flash, I tried downloading it but it doesn't allow to install. Can't catch up with some TV Shows using the networks websites to watch last episodes.

Second Gen Sony Google TV is Even Better
5 Star Review   By nickndfl on Sony - Official Store - Nov 28, 2013

The second generation Google TV is a bit smarter than the first. The set up is easy and remote carries the intuitive character of the first with added features like a traditional synaptic mouse in a more compact package. I have the first gen Sony, a top line Roku and just installed the latest Google TV this week. It is more advanced than the first and makes a Roku virtually obsolete.. IMHO Sony makes the best streaming tv device on the market among all manufacturers. It is easy to set up and maintain and it has plenty of options to keep you entertained. It is also less expensive than the first gen albeit without a DVD player which is not needed because streaming is the next market direction.

NSZ-GS8 is a great product!
5 Star Review   By jehill on Sony - Official Store - Nov 7, 2013

Pros: The capability to recognize your equipment during setup is amazing! No codes to enter! The NSZ-GS8 had no problem recognizing my Sony TV, Sony SACD/DVD Receiver and Comcast X1 DVR. All three components are controlled via the included IR blaster and Bluetooth remote. The Bluetooth remote is truly unique! The front side includes arrow keys, a touch pad to facilitate web browsing and keys that are well thought out. It also includes a microphone for a search function that I sometimes use to change channels at night instead of using the QWERT keyboard on the rear. Buttons are provided on the right side to control the volume, including mute, for your TV and/or sound system as well as to increase/decrease the channel selected. An input switch on the front side allows you to select your TV or sound system's input, which is very handy. You can also turn on/off the power using buttons on the front side. Extensive Settings are provided to customize system operation to meet your needs. You just have to take the time to study the Settings to see what might make an improvement. For example, Audio pass-through, Audio DRC and AV sync. Cons: The Adobe media player cannot be updated separate from a Google Chrome update. For example, I am unable to listen to Sirius XM Online because the site is using a later Adobe media player version than that included in the present version of Google Chrome.

A good gadget
4 Star Review   By Codeman333 on Sony - Official Store - Oct 9, 2013

I was a bit disappointed in the lack of Hulu + support. There is an app called Play on you can download that gets around this deficiency to some extent by making your PC to function as a media server and thus fool Hulu into allowing access. The Netflix interface is excellent. The remote functions well, although the mouse pad takes some practice.

Save your money!!!
1 Star Review   By Fritz165 on Sony - Official Store - Sep 29, 2013

Sorry to say that this Sony product was a let down for me. Purchased my original Internet Player less than a year ago and noticed glitches about two weeks into it. Freeze ups was the main issue and it seemed to be due to heat syncing, in other words the box it self would get very hot to the touch. When you have to start unplugging equipment again and again to get them to work, there is an issue. Sent the unit off to repair and receive a replacement unit in short time, less than two weeks. All was well or so it seemed. Here we go again with freeze ups and signal blocking. Hope your experience is better than what I'm having.

Cut the cord on cable/satellite
4 Star Review   By RDC1 on Sony - Official Store - Sep 9, 2013

Nice unit. I replaced cable TV with satellite TV some time ago, and now I am getting rid of that too. It will take me just a couple of months to pay for the Google TV device with that savings. Easy to use, easy to setup. Not a lot of apps for it yet, but I mainly use Netflix and Amazon Prime, and both are supported. The only problem I have had so far is finding an over-the-air tuner that can be controlled by the GS8. I want to be able to tune live digital TV using the HDMI in port. Unfortunately I have not been able to find a tuner that works. All in all a great device that saves me a lot of money.

The Most Under-Rated Internet Player
5 Star Review   By PharmD on Sony - Official Store - Aug 19, 2013

Aside from Apple politics...this unit delivers! 1080p, dual core processor, and possesses decent apps for present and future. One will not go wrong in adding this unit to any TV. Last but not least ...the bluetooth is great for using with my Sony Premium Dock RDP-XA900IP as a second speaker ....goodbye SONOS!

They Finally Did It!
5 Star Review   By Techmighty on Sony - Official Store - Jul 17, 2013

I am an old Logitech Revue fan that couldn't stand the thought of getting rid of it. But I did when I saw the G8 and what an improvement. Super easy set up within five minutes and everything works including the new voice command system. The Logitech Revue has one half gig for internal memory which was not enough to handle the space necessary with the software upgade to download apps from the Google Store but this Sony Player there is no problem. For example, Slacker has a new design and it reguires space to handle it which the Logitech could not do and the Sony can. I love the remote. It is somewhat complicated but once you get the hang of it no problem because all of our devices now are small and we can handle them across the board. The keys on the remote are raised so you can type easily and you can turn a back light on at night to see the keys. The control for sound is on the side of the remote so you can use your thumb to raise or lower the sound please change channels. What can I say....everything works! I have not had one app not work which is a miracle of the advancement of this techology. The only one thing I can say negative about this unit is it appears that the running mbs for the RAM is very low which means it could eventually without a reboot run out of ram and stop the sound or just not play. Haven't had that happen yet but wish there was more ram. Sony is clearly the leader in providing a third generation player for Google tV. This is easy to operate with so many options for enjoying the internet on your TV.

Impressive, with some (temporary) drawbacks
4 Star Review   By Innovator on Sony - Official Store - Jul 10, 2013

As a first time Google TV owner, I have to say that overall, I'm impressed with this device. The new voice search works extremely well, and the new PrimeTime app is a breath of fresh air in discovering live content. The remote control is also refreshing to use in that in addition to using traditional remote control arrow keys, I can now use a touch track pad, backlit keyboard, or my voice to search for, and interact with new content on my device. As for cons, the initial device set-up takes (by it's own menu’s admission) a solid 20 minutes to complete, which seems unusually long for such an advanced device. I also wish the Google Play app store had more compatible apps for the NSZ-GS8, as so many apps currently in the Google Play store are only compatible with mobile Android devices. However, at the very least, I wish for now this player would gain support for the HBO GO and Hulu Plus apps. Integration with Facebook, and especially its new Graph search tool to show Google TV users what's trending inside of their own social networks would also be a welcome addition down the road... Also, as for the three free movies Sony offers, well you only get to choose from 15 movies: Anonymous, Battle Los Angeles, Colombiana, Friends with Benefits, Ghost Rider, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, Jack & Jill, Just Go With It, Men In Black, Men In Black 2, Moneyball, Smurfs, Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, Spider-Man 3, and The Pirates! Band of Misfits -- This isn’t exactly the most robust or most desirable collection to choose from. So for future Google TV customers, I hope Sony expands their offerings. In conclusion, even with the limitations listed above, this is a very impressive device, if for no other reason than because its Google TV voice and PrimeTime user interfaces make accessible a new world of content to users that in my opinion have essentially been “locked away” behind poor user interfaces for years. This device is a true game changer that I have no doubt will only improve in the months to come.
