AMD Phenom II X3 720 Processor Review
4.5 Star Review  legitreviews.com - Feb 10, 2009

AMD is announcing five new Socket AM3 processors that many enthusiasts have been waiting many months to launch. These processors are based off the same 45nm 'Deneb' core that the previous Phenom II processors use, but with a few tweaks and a new memory controller. This new memory controller allows the processor to run both DDR2 and DDR3 memory kits, which is good news for AMD as up to a 5% performance boost can be seen when running DDR3 memory on Phenom II processors.

AMD Phenom II X3 720 BE
4 Star Review  productwiki.com - Sep 19, 2009

Introduced in February 2009, the Phenom II X3 720 Black Edition is a triple core processor from AMD that operates at a speed of 2.8Ghz. A step up from the Phenom II X3 710 - which features a 200MHz reduced clockspeed and a locked CPU multiplier which limits overclocking - the X3 720 is, like its less advanced brother, a full 4-core component with one core disabled (most likely due to a manufacturing defect which left it unable to function as a higher end quad-core). Ideal for individuals who are interested in building a powerful budget PC which can be retrofitted in the future, or for those interested in upgrading their current AM2+/DDR2 rigs, the Phenom II X3 is built on AMDs latest 45nm fabrication process. This allows for higher stock clockspeeds and lower power consumption compared to similar pre-existing Phenom parts based on the earlier 65nm process. Features Speed: 3 ... PROS: (1) made to be overclocked - unlocked multiplier (2) best of both worlds - more than 2 cores without the performance hit to the individual core clockspeed (3) extremely affordable (4) created with the latest AMD 45nm fabrication process (5) fast enough for the majority of consumers - including gamers ... CONS: (1) limited selection of available AM3 motherboards - also quite expensive (2) 95W TDP is the same as X4 parts (3) little to no difference in performance with newer DDR3
