Unlocking another clever dimension of the A77..
5 Star Review   By Oldmanriver on Sony - Official Store - Apr 10, 2013

I liked this unit so much upon arrival that I subsequently ordered a second identical HVL-43AM flash unit in order to better explore wireless ratio control portrait flash photography with multiple light sources with my A77. Google the available "SONY Alpha Lighting Brochure" and then let your imagination run free! All of my preconceived experiential biases against artificial lighting based upon the unflattering limitations of "old school" strobes have been blown away by the HVL-43AM. This may be the "sweet spot" in the current SONY Alpha flash line-up.

5 Star Review   By audiotrax on Sony - Official Store - Jan 3, 2013

I couldn't have asked for more in a flash. Bounce the light here, bounce it there, bounce it anywhere! The rotating head was a great idea; I tip my hat to the Sony engineers. TTL mode is nearly flawless and the manual mode is a joy. Do yourself a favor. Buy this flash. Note: The photo attached to my review was taken with the HVL-F43AM flash, a77 body and 16-50mm 2.8 lens.

Very good Purchase
4 Star Review   By cito on Sony - Official Store - Sep 11, 2012

Does not have a standard hot shoe so there is no umbrella stand compatible also it wobbles when connected to camera which causes it to disconnect and cause a very underexposed image (black picture) i think a 300 dollar flash should really have a better connection, other wise is a good flash when it works

Great Quality Flash
5 Star Review   By Yorkie on Sony - Official Store - Aug 3, 2012

I researched flashes until my brain couldn’t take it anymore. Anything I could find regarding the Sony 43 and the 58 flashes I read and re-read. I was torn because I wasn’t sure if I needed the extra power from the 58 for what I planned to do, which is mainly inside family pics. Plus many reviews commented on how bulky the 58 was, which didn’t sound appealing. The features between the two are pretty much the same so finally I went with the 43 and have had it for 2 months now and wish I would have gotten it the same time I got my a77 (6 months ago). Features: There are more abilities to this flash than I am sure I will ever find a situation for. It is easy to use, and the adaptability of the TTL flash mode is really nice. I can dial in basically any level of light I want. Now instead of shooting ISO 800-1600 inside, I shoot at 100 bouncing the light off the ceiling resulting with no shadows and awesome natural white balance with sick clarity (again, I wish I would have had this months ago…). Using it as a remote flash is super easy to set up as well, and I’m sure really easy to dial in (I have only played around with this setting, nothing too intense yet). The ability to angle the flash in a vertical position is really awesome too, I have used that many times and has worked nicely. Also, the recycle time between flashes is quick. I have been using plain old batteries and I don’t have any complaints. Performance: A few weeks ago I shot a wedding in Las Vegas in front of the Bellagio fountain at 9PM with the only light around being from the street lights. As you all know, this is brutal situation to be in when you are trying to get enough light from the background (casino behind the pond) to give the pics a setting while simultaneously lighting the subject properly. I set the a77 on 1600, dialed in the flash comp, and angled the head at about a 45 degree angle up. I was amazed at how well the pics were coming out. The pop up flash would have had no chance of getting anything close to the composition I was getting. The 43 was all I needed as far as power goes and the swivel head was awesome in capturing the vertical pics. The other awesome thing about having the flash working for you in the dark is the auto focus infra red sensor is much larger than the on camera one and was able to focus much faster than when I didn’t have my flash mounted. Negatives: The only negative I have is that as I am sure you have read, it does not fit snugly in the hot shoe. It doesn’t feel like it is going to fall off, but I don’t feel like it should be as wiggly as it is. Once I start shooting, I don’t even notice it. A message to Sony: SONY! The fact that a SONY brand flash does not fit properly on a SONY brand camera is inexcusable. There is no way a company trying to gain more of a foot hold in the camera market place should have a quality control issue like this. Not that this is a massive deal (it really isn’t) but how do you expect to recruit Canon and Nikon users when your accessories don’t fit? I would highly recommend you figure this out by the time your two new full frame cameras come out next year. In closing, I am obsessed with this flash and I really wish I would have gotten it sooner. I look back at all the pics I have taken that would have benefited from the flash and it ticks me off I waited so long. I am not missing any of the extra power that the 58 has, and it is light, compact, and totally blew away my expectations. So, don’t stress, save the extra $150 ($350 vs $500 for the 58), grab a couple of extra beers, and go get the 43 (TODAY!). Happy shooting!

Performs great......
4 Star Review   By Jorito70 on Sony - Official Store - Feb 29, 2012

I purchased this flash after trying out several other flashes. Needless to say I am impressed. This flash is so fast on recycle with rechargeable AA batteries. The functions of the flash work as stated in the info section. No worries. It is a solid feeling unit. The tilt positions on this flash are priceless! Love them. Wireless function, TTL, HSS, Strobe mode, modeling all work well, with no issues. I have not noticed any overexposures that I have not caused due to incorrect setting. The only thing I noticed is that the unit does not fit as securely as I thought it could. But since putting it to work I don't even notice it now. Sony did a great job on design, function, and PERFORMANCE with this unit. I am very happy with my decision. No regrets. I would have given 5 stars if the fit was just a little better.

Junk
5 Star Review   By KITK on Sony - Official Store - Dec 19, 2011

I purchased this flash after doing a lot of research on it and it's big brother the 58. This model has almost everything the 58 does. And it is smaller and lighter. A lot of people were complaining about the 58 being to heavy and breaking the camera when shooting vertical. I will say that I have been careful when shooting vertical. I have an a65 and it seem to handle the weight just fine. I did purchase lithium batteries to reduce the weight. The customizable settings are great. I shoot mostly in A. So being able to adjust the settings to manually adjust the flash really helps. (TTL can sometimes overexpose) Overall great flash, and I would suggest spending the extra money over other companies flashes to know that you are getting quality. Couldn't upload images (only allows 5mb max) my images are all to large.
