Wireless Flash Transmitter
3 Star Review   By Michael on Adorama - Aug 11, 2013    ( See more reviews from Adorama )

Ok, I love wireless transmitters, this one works very well with 100% firing capability. I just got this along with 2 new 600ex flash units. Be prepared to read the manuals and do lots of testing, there are lots of options to learn, this system has both wireless triggering and optical triggering. I'll most likely use the wireless feature. I used the system for both a commercial shoot and one wedding now. In the commercial setting, I had the freedom to test and make adjustments without much pressure to make quick changes, but for the wedding, you have to work fast and don't have time to make significant adjustments. I shoot a lot in manual mode, and set each flash to give me dramatic light. ETTL is great for portraits, but at a wedding, well ETTL is a bit dull or soft for my style. But I love to mix both when the situation calls for it. My next shoot is an editorial shoot in Mexico, so that should really be fun and give me lots of creative options. My disappointment with the transmitter is the lack of AF Assist beam. In low, low, low light, it is a requirement. I had to use my iPhone flashlight APP recently as a focus light, that was a pain. What was Canon thinking? My other disappointment is the lack of using the 5D II on camera menu to control the flash system. It's so nice to hit your camera menu and make quick adjustments on a menu that's lit up and easy to see. I guess the new transmitter and flash units were designed for the new 5D III, but I still have older models that I really don't want to retire. Some operation notes: any manual setting changes you make remotely do not take effect until you do a test shot, so don't expect immediate remote changes. I also noticed the new flash units are very strong/bright, so a 1/8 power setting that I like before packs a punch, a 1/16 setting was very nice too. And for the new gel holders, ill probably break those, not very good quality, I just attach my gels with a rubber band around the flash head, if you cut your gels long, they fit nicely, and if I cut a long strip, I can double or triple my gels to make stronger corrections. Anyway, I'm looking for a new upgraded ST-E3-RT with a beam assist hat can be turned off or on!

Cheaper alternative to using a 600ex-rt
5 Star Review   By Frank on Adorama - Jul 16, 2013    ( See more reviews from Adorama )

Take your expensive speedlite off camera and use it for what it was intended for. Direct flash is not the best way to lite a subject anyway this allows you to get your flash off camera for more dramatic photos with depth. Using a 500 dollar speedlite only

I just received this unit about 2 weeks ago and it has performed flawelessly. It was easy to set up, and easily found and played nicely with my Canon 600EX-RT. It synchs up to 1/8000 sec. It is solidly built and has a fairly low profile. Plus, I can fina

What a great device. How come it took so long to come up with this. I like the portability factor and the availability to add as many strobes as you could possibly need. The owners manual is very complex and you may need to review it several times and wil

Wireless Works Great
5 Star Review   By Gregg Mack on Adorama - Jun 18, 2013    ( See more reviews from Adorama )

I traded in my Canon 580EX II flash units for the 600EX-RT units because I really did need the wireless capability. I use 5 of them for large group shots, and with the optical transmitter of the older units, it wasn't always possible to position master wh

Absolute joy

I cannot imagine shooting without the ST-E3-RT. Optical lines of sight between flash units can be managed well enough, but with a rock-solid reliable radio system such as this, shoots go much more quickly, as settings of multiple flashes are controled fro
