5 Star Review   By member glock23c - Aug 6, 2002

Strengths: I love all about this camera. The zoom, the features and all. I really like the memory stick capability. I had a FD88(?) and the memory stick really makes the FD97 stand out.

Weakness: The only negative is the size. This really does not bother me, but some of my friends have mentioned that it is overly large. If you are going to take many pictures, get the long life battery.

I take lots of pics with this camera. This camera is much better than the FD88 that I had. The picture resolution is better, and the features are so much better than the FD88. I like the multiple resolutions that are available on this camera. For personal pictures, and pics that I might print out, I can use the highest of resolutions, and get great prints. If I need to email pics, I can set it on a lower res, and still get prints that are of good quality, and small enough to email. This camera can also use the 3.5" floppies. On the highest resolutions, I can get about 150 pictures on the 128 mb memory stick. On the lower resolutions, you can get well over 1000. I kept the long life battery that I had with my FD88, and I can take a full memory stick (150 pics) on 1 battery charge. If you don't mind the size, I feel that this is a great camera.

Strengths: Sharp pictures, and very, very versatile with the Sony "Strong Flash" (giving bright pictures, up to 33 feet - in the dark!) Best digital camera I've had, and this is #3.

Weakness: It's bulky, like a 4x5 camera, but ... the versatility and the pictures are "worth it", for my business/home use.

I bought this FD97 after seeing a friend's FD95, which is still be used professionally. Would recommend it to anybody, since it can do most everything, especially with that 10x optical zoom feature. Have an ultra-wide accessory lens, also, to expand its use in the field. Have taken some great pictures with this camera, and am thoroughly satisfied with my on-line purchase of the product.

Strengths: 10x 20x zoom, dual memory, lcd or regular viewfinder, 60 second video feature w/ sound, 1600 x 1200 res

Weakness: needs a better flash but that's it

Wow, I've only had this camera one day but I am familiar with many different digital cameras. I did the research, save your time because this is the single best over-all camera with dual memory, high res (1600 x 1200) and a neat 60 sec video feature w/ sound. Sony simply is the best bang for your buck in this price range. I paid $ 540.00 plus $19.95 shipping for: camera, a 32mb memory stick, a cleaning kit and a carrying case. Good promo deal.

5 Star Review   By member Bezmongol - Mar 19, 2002

Strengths: Amazing zoom, image stabilization, standard 52mm accessories, macro, one touch white balance, dual media. LCD and viewfinder are the best I've seen on a digital camera.

Weakness: Some distortion and chromatic aberation at max zoom, but that's normal for lens this length.

I really wanted the Sony 707 for the higher resolution. Now I'm glad I got this one. Besides being considerably less expensive, it feels great in the hand, controls are very intelligently laid out and instinctive, and the picture quality is just fine. I haven't been so happy with a new toy in a long time. I used to be afraid to "burn film" because out of a roll, I'd be happy if there were 1 or 2 shots worth keeping. Now I just snap away. Highly recommend.

Strengths: Don't be fooled, if you are merely using this camera as a weekend enthusiast it's picture quality is far superior than anything in it's price range. Not to mention the Macro/Telephoto capability.

Weakness: Poor shots indoors

The zoom on this camera is top of the line for its price range, and the macro feature is excellent. I wouldn't go for the accessory add on lenses (I purchased a wide angle titanium lens to go with my camera and the lens it came with was far superior). The video feature is wonderful for websites and class/work presentations (such as in Powerpoint). I have never been more satisfied with a purchase such as this!!! Spend the extra money and get a remote tripod to ensure crisp, stunning images. The features within the camera are endless to say the least, did I mention how wonderful the macro feature is? Paid $455.

4 Star Review   By member MINDFREE1 - Mar 2, 2002

Strengths: Very good picture quality, a bargain for a dual media camera; the 10x zoom with the image stabilizer works well.

Weakness: The digital zoom feature delivers slightly fuzzy pictures, it also takes a couple of seconds to write to the floppy disk.

This camera is a great value in a digital camera. I bought it for the telephoto feature and the dual media memory storage capability. You really should take the time to become familiar with all the features such as the AE program, white balance, flash settings, and exposure modes, as these will greatly enhance your picture taking experience. The easy connectivity to the PC for review, downloads, printings, the e-mail feature, as well as the A/V connection for TV viewing also sell this camera. Writing speed to the floppy disk needs to be increased, and you should get the extra long lasting battery if you are going to take this camera on any kind of extended nature hike. The 60 second video is amusing. Over all the Sony mavica FD97 is a a very good camera which I would recommend to a photographer with experience using a 35mm SLR, or one who wants to move up from a more basic digital camera.

4 Star Review   By member septer012 - Feb 27, 2002

Strengths: durability, easiness, save over 200+ pictures to memory stick.

Weakness: Poor Dark shots, save only 4-6 pictures to the floppy disk.

The Camera is a blast... The LCD screen works well and you can take alot of shots if u save it to the memory stick. It has a very nice zoom. And every thing made by Sony will works to the best of my knowledge well. And don't forget if you buy a memory stick and you don't want one of those mouses that has the memory stick input buy the floppy disk memory stick adapter.

5 Star Review   By member rosenq3 - Feb 23, 2002

Strengths: Easy to use. Great zoom and I love being able to save a photo on floppy disk but be sure to buy a memory stick too.

Weakness: Need external flash or slave flash for low light shots.

I can't understand why the price on this camera has dropped so much. The price of the CD1000 has stayed the same and these two cameras are identical except for the FD97 camera uses floppies and the CD1000 uses Cd's. I would recommend this camera to anyone!

2 Star Review   By member wasabe58 - Feb 6, 2002

Strengths: Availability to save to floppy or memory stick

Weakness: Poor picture quality.

I purchased this camera to replace an older Mavica (FD 81). The picture quality on the 81 was much better than with this camera. Original flash is only good for 5-7 feet, any further and you need an add on flash. I purchased this camera because of the service from my past two Mavicas, however, the pictures I have taken with this camera leave much to be desired. I would rate this camera a 2-4 out of 10.
