Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V review at Camera Labs
4 Star Review  cameralabs.com - Aug 1, 2011

The Cyber-shot HX9V is Sony's latest pocket super-zoom, sporting a 16x range with impressive 24mm wide-angle coverage, a new 16.2 Megapixel CMOS sensor, a high resolution 3in screen, Full HD video, fast continuous shooting, and a built-in GPS. If that wasn't enough, the HX9V also includes Sony's clever image stacking modes to reduce noise, blur or create panoramas in-camera, along with a new defocus option to simulate shallow depth-of-field effects. It's an impressive specification, so the big question is how it compares to its big rivals from Canon, Nikon and Panasonic. Find out in our review

There are three great reasons to get this camera. 1. As your sole camera. 2. As your sole video camera. 3. As a backup to your dslr I have a bigger review but maxed out sony's character limit.

What a surprisingly great little camera!!!
5 Star Review   By radumon on Sony - Official Store - Apr 16, 2012

This is BY FAR the best "carry everywhere" camera I've ever owned, and I've owned a ton of them. Excellent image quality, unsurpassed HD movie capability, small enough to carry in a pants pocket, but not so small it's easily dropped. Weighs just enough to feel like a quality camera, not a toy. I have other cameras (Canon, Panasonic, Kodak), but this is the one that goes with me everywhere. Great battery life, easy to use, super wide-angle, long zoom range. I totally LOVE it! It's now my favorite camera of all the many I've owned, including other Sony's, Nikon, Leica, Canon, Minolta, Kodak, Pentax, Olympus.... you name it, I've owned it, and I like this one best for overall, everyday use....

Awesome Camera
4 Star Review   By Gregg on Sony - Official Store - Apr 10, 2012

I love(d) this camera. I did tons of research to find the perfect one and went to several stores until I finally found one in stock. I took it on an important trip and took tons of pictures and videos, only to find out that that video's do not work with Macintosh... I spoke with Sony and Apple support for hours. Why would Sony make such an advanced camera that isn't compatible with Macintosh? This is ridiculous. I'm taking it back to get a new camera. It seems like they put so much thought into everything that they forgot one of the most fundamental parts of a digital camera: compatibility. Everything else worked perfectly. That's why I am so frustrated that I have to go through everything all over again and find a new camera. I will not buy from Sony again.

Great camera, one problem...
4 Star Review   By Deziel on Sony - Official Store - Mar 14, 2012

The one bad thing is the the flash is right where you hold your hand. Many times when taking a picture the flash can't pop up because you accidentally have your finger there. The flash on our camera stopped working all together (it wouldn't pop up anymore) and had to send it back to Sony to be fixed under warranty. They did a great job fixing it and getting it back to us but I am scared that it will break again when the camera is no longer under warranty.

Great Camera
5 Star Review   By RDAL on Sony - Official Store - Mar 13, 2012

This is a great camera. It has great features and takes great pictures and video. One of the reasons I chose this camera was the size. I can put it in my pocket, backpack or briefcase when traveling by foot or air. I have also found it much easier to use than my older camera and a lot more fun. I have enjoyed taking video of my children dance, band and choir concerts. I have been able to zoom right up and get their faces even when sitting towards the back of the auditorium.

Great HD video but compressed audio
3 Star Review   By ttishizue on Sony - Official Store - Feb 22, 2012

The good - Very good image quality for both stills and video, especially in low light situations. The bad - This is an area that rarely gets reviewed - audio quality for videos. I've owned this camera for several months and I realize now that the audio suffers from capturing low bass without distortion, especially at higher volumes (i.e. concerts#. This seems to be a common limitation for any camera that uses mp4 or AVCHD compression format. Also, when there is low bass playing in the background outdoors, this camera doesn't quite reproduce the environment to where you feel like "you're there", and the vocal clarity isn't quite up par to where it can rival a better built-in microphone like the one on the Canon SX1 IS. It still has a "tinny" sound characteristic. This becomes especially noticeable when playing the files on a higher end home audio system and even my Klipsch 2.1 multi-media speaker system. Compared to my old Canon SX1 IS, which uses the less-compressed .mov format. I produce videos to eventually watch on my high end home theater system, so audiophile sound quality is a definite requirement for me. If Sony can improve on this, they could have the perfect compact point and shoot camera in their hands. I was hoping that this camera could replace my much bigger and heavier Canon SX1 IS, but still didn't quite make it in the audio quality area. I just wish that for a camera with such amazing video quality, as others have stated, would match it with equally good uncompressed, CD-quality audio. Looking further into this audio compression issue, the audio bit rates are as follows for both channels - 256 kbps for AVCHD at 24 mbps and 128 kbps for mp4 #uncompressed audio is over 1450 kbps bit rate like on the Canon SX1 IS#.

So Glad I Chose This Camera!
5 Star Review   By HoodsterWI on Sony - Official Store - Feb 10, 2012

First of all I just want to say that this camera is MORE than AMAZING!! I was a little scared to buy this camera, I must admit because of the price and I wasn't quite sure any camera was worth this much. But the day I got it, I could not put it down. The features this camera contains is just unbelievable. I was looking for a digital camera that was sort of like a DSLR Camera but in a point and shoot camera if that makes sense. And I found just what I was looking for! It takes breathtaking pictures in ANY setting or light. I take pictures of my 16 month daughter all the time and I was absolutely in awe when I saw that the automatic setting went to "baby". The high zoom is just incredible, I was in loss for words of how much it zoomed and still how clear the picture came out. The HD recording records just like my other sony video camera so we barely even use that anymore. So if you want a camera that can record like a Video Camera but don't want to buy one, this is the camera for you. There was something that I was a bit worried about and that was two things. One is the size of the camera, at first I didn't really like it, but then I started to LOVE it. People noticed our camera a lot and gave us tons and tons of compliments. The style of the camera is very different than any other camera I've seen. It's bulky, but not in a bad way, it gives it that "I'm bold" kind of look especially given the fact that it has a bunch of cool things on the side so it makes it just scream 'amazing'. :) Another thing is, the Flash. The flash pops up whenever it needs it and I'm used to putting my hand where the flash is so I'm constantly pushing it down. So I had to get adjusted putting my hand on the lenses or somewhere else. It just takes some getting used to. If you want a camera that is just simple, and thin, then this camera really isn't for you. But if you want a camera that is professional but very very easy, this is for you. This really is for those people who want to take those professional shots and you don't need to be a photographer to do it. This camera also takes pictures soooo fast. It's great when you need to take a picture of something real fast. I'm in LOVE with this camera. I capture even better shots with this camera at the amazing fast pace it takes and the quality of the picture. I wanted a camera that could basically do it all and this camera is definitely it! I would recommend it to everyone!

Best in Class
5 Star Review   By EJPA on Sony - Official Store - Jan 29, 2012

I have the HX5, HX7 and now the HX9 from the day it was released in USA. If others find problems with this camera they should look into a mirror and they will most likely find the source of the problem. I use these HX models for my work all over the world. They are all great but the HX9 leads the pack in quality and performance. I will learn to accommodate the flash location.

A bit disappointed
3 Star Review   By Sorrent on Sony - Official Store - Jan 19, 2012

As a flagship point-and-shoot camera, I expected more from HX9V. It has some nice features indeed, some compared to an entry level dslr. It should be perfect for non professional picture enthusiasts looking for a portable camera with nice features and manual controls but the problems begin in the LCD. The pictures look very red, some times you´ll just find out whether the picture is good or not when you transfer to the computer, you might even think that there´s something wrong with the white balance but there´s not. In my opinion this is unacceptable in a camera at this price. The flash i think is ok, even stylish but the problem is that you can´t adjust its intensity. The picture quality is ok but don´t expect anything spectacular. It had everything to be an amazing camera but in the end it´s just good.

Sony HX9V flash
4 Star Review   By MrAnderson on Sony - Official Store - Jan 9, 2012

Nice travel camera. Grate video but REGULAR Pics
2 Star Review   By ivolandscape on Sony - Official Store - Jan 4, 2012

Nice travel camera. Grate video, grate low light pictures. Fast shooting. Amazing battery life. Amazing video. Better than most video cameras. Grate zoom the bad part: - over saturated colors (No way to control this, only in p mode) - terrible when shooting red color subjects - no filter ring for lens adapters. - no way to put a lens hood. - gps slow, useless in some areas - when on, lens always opens a play only when on would be nice. - cheap plastic battery door will not last a few month. panorama takes practice but works. Overall: Grate super compact travel camera. will keep only for the video.

Awesome for Video - OK for Photos
4 Star Review   By danimal on Sony - Official Store - Jan 1, 2012

This camera is awesome for video (image stabilization rocks!) For photos though, there are a few things that can be annoying at times: there is no control over noise reduction which automatically smears the detail out of most images (even at 100 ISO). Images can only be compressed to JPEG (would love the option to save to RAW). In manual mode, there are only two aperture values to choose from.

THE BEST PURCHASE I HAVE EVER MADE!
5 Star Review   By thecameraman on Sony - Official Store - Dec 27, 2011

This is the best purchase that i have ever made the photo quality is amazing the wide angle makes it great for taking pictures in small rooms. I also like the background defocus. the only thing that could make it better is a black and white setting. To be honest sony could charge twice what they are charging and it would still be worth the money!

Smeared pictures and loss of details
2 Star Review   By PGhosh on Sony - Official Store - Dec 12, 2011

I have purchsed HX9v 2 months ago.The experience has not been that good. The Stlls looks smeary in full resolution irrespective of setting. The quality of stills are the basic requirement of the stii camera and that is where it falters.Other features are secondary to this requirement. The Jpeg compression is too high and the noise reduction is too agressive. There is no control over these features.. Only thing now I can do is to request Sony to solve these basic issues and develop a firmware upgrade

I have had my camera about a week. After a little gettiing used to, I am very pleased. There are many features but the on screen guide is very helpful. Good pictures in low light situations. Panorama mode is cool. Excellent zo features. Very good movie mode. I will try tthe 3D mode next. Over all a very good camera for the money.

A very amazing camera
5 Star Review   By AxelSpike123 on Sony - Official Store - Nov 23, 2011

I think that Sony really did an amazing job making this camera, because this camera has a good attention to detail. This camera is has very good pics in 16 megapixel quality and comes with control over aperture and shutter but can be a simple point and shoot as well. The camer also features things like 3d, panoramas, amazing 1920/ 1080/60p. Really love this camera and recommend it and I was looking at the tx55 but if you have an iPhone then get this one because iPhone takes good pics and is compact so why would you but a camera with less quality videos, zoom and less control pluses the tx55 is not capable with party shot like the hx9v. Just to say my family loves taking pics so we usually prefere sony and canon but in my case I got the hx9v because of its more effects. My uncle also has the wx9 but that is mostly the same thing as the tx55, so if you want peformanse and also great effects stick with the h series cameras, but if you want a little more style then go with the t series. Sony is amazing in its products service emplyees and is a well built company with a strong foundation. ( I have owned this camera for less than a month but have used it a lot )

An Enjoyable Compact Camera
4 Star Review   By Gurei on Sony - Official Store - Nov 21, 2011

I wanted a camera that would easily fit in a shirt pocket and could go with me anywhere because I found that I often left my DSLR at home due to its size. It is fun and easy to use and produces beautiful JPEG images. In addition, video quality on this camera is very high. The absence of RAW capability on an advanced point and shoot is disappointing, though, and will hopefully be available on future models. I also miss aperture- and shutter-priority shooting modes on this camera. The manual mode, however, allows the complete adjustment of exposure settings. If you're looking for an easily portable high-quality camera and don't mind the absence of RAW shooting, I recommend this camera.

Sony's New Little Powerhouse
5 Star Review   By BillsCameraOpinions on Sony - Official Store - Nov 18, 2011

This newer Point & Shoot from Sony just captures all the essence of what a Photographer would want in a small, pocket-sized, lightweight (P&S type) Camera. As one who utilizes various brands of DSLR's, Sony's newer A55V SLT Type, and several P&S Cameras, this DSC-HX9V really hits the spot. This unit enables many of the same functionalities found on DSLR Cameras, or those model & brand types in-between P&S and DSLR type Cameras that cost much more. Yet this model is priced at a level that is more affordable, yet packs a punch. Some of the very noticeable features are: Its Frame Rate for Action Shots, ability to "capture" sharp images in dim natural or artificial lighting, user displays and guides on the LH side of the LCD, and Movie Recording quality sharpness and focusing is impressive to say the least. Under the "P" #Programmable Auto#, you can quickly set and adjust functionality to suite your personal desires, the scene Coloring & Exposure effects for the shot, or other special effects you may desire. Its Autoi & Autoi+ do a terrific job if you do not have the time, experience, or desire to make your own adjustments or settings. Nearly all P&S Cameras in this class have similar features and functionality, but this particular Sony Model really hits a home run, makes things easier, and delivers quality photos & movies. I highly recommend this unit for those desiring or needing a quality P&S Camera. A couple Cons: The internal GPS & Tagging works well - however, it will eat up battery power much more quickly. Sony's ALPHA series products, and this higher-end model P&S Camera like to eat battery power. It would be prudent to carry a fully charged spare battery when traveling or out and about. Second Con: It comes with a 31 Page User Manual #Sony's terminology# that is basically useless. It really does not tell you anything about the Cameras detailed usage, setting, functions, etc. However, the Users Guide - Sony's terminology - is a 205 Page detailed description of everything you need to know or want. However this is only available as as an XML type document - does not use "Content, Index, & Pages" formatting. You go Online, chose the "Subject/Topic" you want to read and learn about, and the computerization takes you to that subject matter. For those of us who WANT & NEED a printable paper hard copy to place into a binder with Page Numbers, Contents page, etc. you have to download the "whole thing Section by sub-Section", and create & assign your own page numbering system. As in any traditional Book format, then you can punch the printed pages and place them into a 3-ring binder. Hence you have created your own physical Users Guide for reference. COME ON SONY - you have a great product here, put this Users Guide - Note GUIDE, not Manual - into a PDF Format and allow the user/owner to download the whole thing all at once, ina format with a Contents & Page Number system.

No night photos
3 Star Review   By ACgator on Sony - Official Store - Oct 26, 2011

I've being using this new camera for a week now and I haven't been able to take a single decent flash photo with it. I bought the top of the line camera from Sony point & shoot. But all I get are red tinted photos when at night, with or without flash. My old Nikon doesn't have as powerful zoom, nor a HD movie capability, but I can take outstanding pictures at night with it. This expensive camera is a daytime only camera.

Extended warranty nightmare
4 Star Review   By Lumpypixels on Sony - Official Store - Oct 19, 2011

I love this camera- Even thought when I ordered it in June and paid $349 and now its $299 WTF Great hi-def detail in macro as well as max zoom, sweeping panoramic images- super hi-def video with stereo recording who doesn't love that! I am an adventurous point and shoot photographer so I got the extended handling clause 'hassle-free' warranty - and less than a month of owning it -it accidentally gets knocked into a creek, mud in the lens housing, flash stopped working, focus stopped working...So I start the ball rolling to warranty land (in July) its October and still no camera and now the price is gone down $50bucks! ugh. At my whits-end about this.

Great, but...
5 Star Review   By Hanhan on Sony - Official Store - Oct 7, 2011

This is the best Cyber Shot camera ever i guess.. I've took pictures for more than 1000 using this camera and wawh, just one word.. Awesome.. You'll get the best picture by using the right mode / scene. My fav mode are backlight mode & fast picture snap. I never imagine i could take a bright picture when there's a strong light behind the object.. and the colour composition is just fine.. But.., the pop up flash quite fragile i think. If Sony made it built in like the previous series HX7V, this camera is perfect. Once i had the flash didn't pop up, then i try to pull it manually. Maybe lot of this camera's user push the flash manually. Don't do that! Just turn off the camera and let the camera get the flash in. Better not to use the auto flash features also to avoid the flash pop up when you place your forefinger above it. Great camera, but must be careful with the flash.

Awesome Camera
5 Star Review   By wingspinner on Sony - Official Store - Oct 2, 2011

I categorize myself as a semi-pro photographer. I've got a full range of Canon EOS stuff and know how to use it well. However, for family and tourism we need something small and versatile. I've stepped through all the Canon point and shoots over the years with moderate satisfaction. When Sony finally opted to move away from their dumb proprietary/expensive Memory stick and added a GPS to their small cameras I had to try one. We started with the HX5V and were VERY satisfied for the most part - yes there were cons. When I saw the specs on the HX9V I was wowed and bought one. We took it on a two month trip touring the US - Rushmore, Yellowstone, etc. In short we were astounded at the capability of this little camera and the incredible quality of the photos. There are so many great things that work well - smile detector, focus, low light, HD Video, the list goes on. The panorama feature is so good and, for the first time on any camera we used it intensely - very impressed. We'd like to be able to use the zoom as well as specify the number of photos to stitch for this. We were just amazed at the great photos we could get with this camera with trying very hard. It's a must have for us. On the downside, it's ridiculous that it has a non-standard USB connector. If you loose their special cable you are toast.

Excellent features with terrible quality
1 Star Review   By ski1 on Sony - Official Store - Sep 19, 2011

I bought my camera less than a month ago in NYC, everything was excellent until the pop-up flash doesn´t work anymore... (when I look for this issue on line a lot of people have the same problem...) I tried to reset it, and did a lot of things but nothing! today I went to the technical service to fix it, but I´m from costa rica so the warrienty is not avaliable for this country, I waste a lot of money and now I have to waste more money to fix my "new super camera" ... THANKS SONY! this is the last time that I expend my money in your products...

Awesome camera but
4 Star Review   By Pauliemac on Sony - Official Store - Sep 17, 2011

So i want to start by saying that this is an awesome little camera! the one and only reason that i returned the previous model HX7V to the store and will not buy this model HX9V is because of the limited burst settings. Yes it can take 10 full quality pictures in 1 second or 10 photos in 2 seconds, but then it needs to process them, it can't shoot "continuously" and that is not flexible enough for me as i like to take action sequence photos that can take up to 5 or 10 seconds and longer sometimes. I still own and use the very old sony w150 and even that is capable of taking 3.2 8MP photos per second continuously only limited but your memory stick capacity. If that 4 year old camera can do it why can't this modern flagship model camera shoot "continuously" at least 5 shots per second. My message to Sony is, can you PLEASE improve the burst settings on this series of camera? If you do i promise to buy the next model. I would even buy this model HX9V if you could just change the the software to accommodate better burst settings, even if you have to reduce the quality to maybe 12MP rather than 16MP but i would prefer full res. I would really like to know what is Sony's opinion on this subject? Please advise. Regards Sony fan

Waste of money...
2 Star Review   By Vcj90 on Sony - Official Store - Sep 17, 2011

I mostly agree with the positive comments in other reviews. Very versatile dP&S with excellent video. Perhaps not noted by others, but with the supplied PMB software you can easily select one full HD (1920 x 1080) frame from a video to copy or print. This allows one to video something like a soccer game and then select out that special image of your child's efforts. I feel it is important to understand that this camera is a dP&S (digital Point and Shoot) camera and one should not expect it to compete with the dSLR cameras. Instead, I feel that with all the "bells and whistles" this camera provides, one should simply take it with them, take lots of pictures (and videos), and have fun with it. The "Sweep Multi Angle" 3D mode that lets you view an image in 3D on the camera by tilting the camera left and right, for example, is just plain fun. Note: I've given the camera all "5 stars" primarily because there aren't any glaring negative aspects of the camera and I don't feel it is proper to mark it down arbitrarily. The reliability score certainly reflects this since I don't see how anyone will know how reliably the camera is until they've had it for quite a while, and this review package will not allow zero stars as an "unknown" response without lowering the overall reliability score average. -One important point regarding the pop-up flash - according to the manual it may be retracted manually simply by pushing it back down. Don't know why other reviewers (or Sony Tech.) didn't see this in the manual.

Best Compact Camera ever !
5 Star Review   By JB007 on Sony - Official Store - Sep 16, 2011

this camera offers a lot of features, which pushed me to buy it instead of many other semi-pro camera's which are bigger in size and doesn't have these great options. the quality of photos are outstanding specially when compared to products in it's price. I highly recommend this camera, so if you are a feature geek, go and have one.

Best in its class!!!!!
5 Star Review   By Rony on Sony - Official Store - Sep 5, 2011

This is a spectacular camera!! I was a die-hard user of another top Japanese brand and never big on Sony until they started opening up to the SD cards. My first Sony camera was the HX5V which was a little smaller than this one but also had the GPS built in - which I simply cannot live without!! The HX5V took such great photos that I was thrilled to see the nice upgrades and slight body changes in this model, which proved to be wonderful!! Sharp detail, exceptional colors and HD movies are the standard on this little powerhouse. Where this line excels is the low light shots. I've had this camera on two vacations now, one in Mexico City and the other in Venice - the evening/night shots were amazing! I'm attaching one unedited photo for reference, taken in the standard night shooting mode. This camera works nicely right out of the box but it will become exceptional if you take the time to get to know it. Carry this baby with you everywhere and photograph everything in your daily life at all hours, changing the settings regularly. Then you will you begin to see the amazing power contained in this little package.

Almost....perfect
4 Star Review   By Spezaled on Sony - Official Store - Aug 12, 2011

I purchased this camera a few weeks ago after extensive research on it and its competition. The Sony seemed to come out on top for the majority of it's features except the optical zoom..just barely surpassed by Nikon. After using it for these past few weeks, I'm very impressed with the rich list of techy features( I love gadgets!) that can be both useful and sometimes gimmicky. It's very responsive even though I purchased a SanDisk Extreme Pro card for it and the lag time in between pics is minimal. The panorama mode works very well and the HD video is amazing! Even though the still pics seems very crisp and distortion free, they are blown-out or over exposed regularly. I know I can adjust those settings but it would be nice if it was set up correctly from the get go. The only other thing that really bugs me is the placement of the pop-up flash. It's located where your finger would be when taking a photo and makes taking that photo somewhat difficult. I wish it had been placed more towards the middle allowing for a secure finger hold of the camera. Overall, the camera is well worth the money. Hopefully the next generation will have some of these concerns addressed but I'll enjoy this camera regardless.

HX9V Great Camera
5 Star Review   By clipper on Sony - Official Store - Jul 29, 2011

This is a really nice camera. I use this when I don't want to lug around my DSLR. This is a great sidekick camera for DSLR shooters. The camera has enough of a learning curve to warrant a more extensive user manual or at least a PDF file of a more extensive manual that can be printed. The available user guide that can be viewed on a computer doesn't do it. Sony needs to support it's sales and customers

The Pop-Up Flash SUCKS!
4 Star Review   By LoverOfSony on Sony - Official Store - Jul 28, 2011

I've had this camera for 2 days now and this is REALLY IRRATATING! I'm afraid I'm going to break it!!!!! Who ever thought to put in a pop up flash must have been related to the person that wanted to change the ingredients of the original Coke Cola. What were you thinking???? How did you expect us to hold the camera with this beautiful screen on the back? No other Sony point and shoot has a pop up flash. Again...WHAT WERE YOU THINKING???? I would not recommend this camera because of the pop-up flash. Spend the extra money and get the SLR and save yourself some grief.

Great Camera, Great Features, Software Just OK
4 Star Review   By Dexter on Sony - Official Store - Jul 25, 2011

I like the camera and all of it's features, especially for outdoor use. I was worried about color reproduction but it seems OK when not viewed on the display. Documentation leaves a little to be desired and is scarce on technical details. The accompanying PMB software, to me, defies common sense and is difficult to use.

The DSC-HX9V is a Love-Hate Camera
4 Star Review   By Etz786 on Sony - Official Store - Jun 23, 2011

The DSC-HX9V is the first camera that actually makes it possible to get both high quality HD Video and Still Images from the same camera. The “G” series lens really is better, and the Image Stabilization is so good that subject movement is now your only moving variable. I use images from this camera in the authoring of Blu-Ray disks and they are comparable to those taken with a Canon EOS 7D DSLR. Once cropped to 1920 x 1080, you can’t tell which camera took which image on the published Blu-Ray disk. HD Video is truly impressive, with the Image Stabilization and Tracking Focus playing a major role. The video is as good as that taken with a dedicated HD Video camera, with the added advantage of 16X Zoom. THE BAD is that this is a Sony Cybershot camera, and the last few versions of their high end Cybershot cameras have been agonizingly slow. They are slow to take the shot, and they take forever to write to the card, even when using a SDHC Class 10 card. When writing to the card, the camera is frozen. Zoom is not available during the write phase, and for a small period afterward, so composing the next shot isn’t possible. If you are looking for a camera to get candid shots, this is not the camera for you. It takes some serious anticipating to get a good candid shot, and you won’t be getting two single shots off in a row without a significant delay. If you have Blond hair in your pictures, expect that to show up on the Screen as Red hair. This is particularly true when you use flash. You get some interesting comments from your subjects when they see their picture. The actual image files have the correct color. You just can’t proof the color on the screen during review. This is the camera that I carry full time. I wear it on my belt in a standard fabric camera case. The location of the Power Button is such that it turns the camera on when you sit down in a car seat. The solution is to get a plastic soap dish, and insert the bottom half with one end cut off into the case. The camera slips in the case easily and is prevented from turning on. I got one of the first production DSC-HX9V from the Sony Style web site. The lens is very noisy in operation. It sounds like a coffee grinder when operating. A call to Sony Support yielded no help, so It may be that the noisy operation is normal. We will see in the long run. The bottom line is “Would I buy this camera again?” The short answer is “Yes”. I have found that I can work around or ignore the listed bad things which I have come to accept to get the exceptional Image and HD Video quality. I just shouldn’t have to.

Best Compact Digital On Market
5 Star Review   By AmericanInBangkok on Sony - Official Store - Jun 20, 2011

I am a serious amateur videographer that loves to document daily life as I have sold all my worldly possessions and moved to Thailand. I have only 3 suitcases of belongings and can pack my bags in 2 hours. Key to me is the ability to shoot video easily. This camera does just that in spades! The image stabilization is unbelievable and allows me to walk while shooting with no shake in the image. Have not seen or used another camera in this price range to allow me to do this. Picture quality is excellent for my purposes which includes uploading to web. Progressive shooting using MP4 format at 25 fps is awesome. (Note: I bought this camera in Thailand and it supports 50p and 25p only) Battery life is better than the TX7 i used to use. I now get better than 1 hour shooting time. I have a 32GB SDHC memory card and can record over 300 minutes of video with this one card at 1440 X 1080. Night shots are excellent for both video and photos. I uploaded one of my night shot photos. I HIGHLY recommend this product. 16X optical zoom is also unbelievable in a camera that fits in your shirt pocket. The background defocus feature although not perfect is good enough for my needs. I uploaded a sample picture that I like but you can find some issues if you are a professional and look closely at this pic. All in all there is nothing that compares to the many features of this camera in its price range.

Packed with awesome features!
5 Star Review   By Wanderlust on Sony - Official Store - Jun 18, 2011

I purchased this camera when it was just released two months ago, and I’m glad I did (it’s currently backordered). I primarily bought this camera for a 3 week trip I’m taking to Europe in a few weeks. I purchased it with plenty of time to spare because I wanted to make sure I had the perfect camera for my trip, and I’m confident this is it. The camera feels solid and is constructed of quality materials including a rubberized hand grip and a metal body. Although the camera is thicker than most point and shoots, it still is compact enough to fit nicely in my front jean pocket. I recently tested this camera on a hiking trip. I snapped some shots and printed a few of them to check the quality of the raw unedited images. First of all, I was blown away with the quality of the zoom lens. The camera has a gyro sensor built into the lens to stabilize images when shooting and works great when zoomed in at maximum to deliver clear and detailed shots (seem example images of an Island Scrub Jay below). The full HD movie recording is remarkable, with crystal clear sound and picture. The camera does struggle with low light settings and often times delivers dark, grainy, or blurry images. These problems are to some extent improved with the cameras “superior intelligent auto” feature which takes multiple shots and merges them together to produce a single image. I can’t comment on the camera’s 3-D features since I do not own a 3-D television (yet). However, the in camera 3-D feature mimics a 3-D display and is neat to show off to friends. Although many reviews have mentioned the inconvenient location of the popup flash, I couldn’t imagine any other location for the flash since the face of the camera is primarily devoted to the powerful zoom lens. The popup lens is located on the side of the camera where you would normally place your left index finger when shooting. The lens is engineered to pop up automatically when the flash is required, but can be pushed back down manually when the flash is no longer needed. The built-in GPS receiver for geotagging images is great but does drain battery power. I have purchased an inexpensive Sony battery as a spare for when I have the GPS receiver on. The camera is also packed with a few other nice touches. When viewing a group of images (such as burst shots taken at up to 10 frames per second), the images can be advanced forward and reverse just by tilting the camera left and right. The click wheel located to the right of the display is pretty slick, and allows you to advance through stored images quickly just by rotating the wheel. When viewing images on the display, panning and zooming is smooth and the click wheel allows you to pan images left and right. Overall I’m incredibly satisfied with the performance, construction, and quality of this camera.

One Major Fault
2 Star Review   By JonLee on Sony - Official Store - Jun 4, 2011

I was prepared to ignore all the negative comments about the awkward location of the flash because I thought I could get used to it, which I did. We were in the middle of our European cruise and the flash ceased to pop up. It ruined most of the photo opps. By the time we came back from our vacation, I had had the camera for 45 days, which had gone passed the 30 day return period. It had to be sent in for repair. What a shame!

I would pay 150 for this camera and thats it! Photos were grainy, The mode dial is very hard to turn and took 2 hands. Panoramas look VERY stitched together! This is NOT 16x zoom! It goes to 12 then barely zoom anymore! You cant use it when it is charging! Shutter button needs to be pushed VERY hard to take a picture. The flash is in the worst possible spot its right where you put your hand when you take pictures. DO NOT BUY THIS CAMERA!!!!! BUY THE NIKON COOLPIX S9100!

I have owned this camera for more than a month and I'm content with buying it. The quality of images is amazing. I had many compliments from friends when they saw the pictures I took for them via this camera. I wish the camera is smaller and slimmer. I don't have any trouble using this camera yet. So far I grade it 5 stars.

4 Star Review   By surfsunstrings on Sony - Official Store - Jun 3, 2011

I have had Canon cameras before, but this time I wanted to buy a Nikon. I really wanted to like the Nikon S9100, but it has severe shake problem in videos with extended zoom. So, I wanted to check out the Sony HX9v. Have had this camera for a while now. I have tested lot of the features.I'm so happy with it. It takes some effort getting used to the menu and the wheel. But not that bad. We love the sweep panorama, it does really great job. This camera also takes very good quality videos. Only flaw with the camera is the placement of the flash. I tend to keep a finger over it, so it struggles to pop up:) - Overall great camera.

Best sony camera EVER!
5 Star Review   By Gold1530 on Sony - Official Store - May 25, 2011

Overall this camera is AWESOME. The zoom is what made me buy this camera, also the megapixel which means the overall quality of the video and pictures. This camera doesn't need an instruction manual. It has everything that a Sony Rep could tell you, what the web could tell you and even more. The pictures are AMAZING! It can bring up a picture of a house from say 800 to 1,000 feet away to look like you're just 20 feet away. The panorama is an great feature for taking huge pictures and compacting it into one. The video is great , just as good as the pictures, the best part is that videos can be recorded is 3D! How awesome is that? Very. I would ^HIGHLY^ recommend this camera to a friend, professional photographer, even the president of the US. This camera is an AMAZING camera, a must buy.

Great Great Great Camera
5 Star Review   By quince on Sony - Official Store - May 24, 2011

I was really looking forward to receiving ths camera especially due to the 16x optical zoom,1080p video and other nice features. However shorty after receiving it started displaying an error C:32:60 (can't focus) and instructed me to turn off and on, which I did and it worked OK therefore no need to return the camera. However this error is getting more and more frequent to the point where the camera is next to useless. Sometimes I have to turn the camera off and on around 30 - 50 times before I can take a photo, by which time the thing I want to take a photo off may have disappeared. The camera is slowly driving me insane. I bought this camera 1 month ago specifically for travelling however Sony will not honour the warranty outside of the USA therefore I have to put up with the error for 3 months when I am travelling before I can send it for repair. I thought considering the error has occurred from new and that the camera is only 1 month old that Sony would allow a Sony service centre to take a look at it in another country (e.g. Mexico) but they say it's not possible and to get it warranty service in the USA (not very useful when travelling for a few months with this as my only camera). I previously owned 2 Canon cameras and they never failed in the 5+ years I owned each of them. I was hoping that Sony quality would be just as high but it didn't even last 1 month. I wouldn't mind the poor quality if I could just get it repaired under warranty by Sony but that's only allowed in the USA. Basically it looks like Sony don't expect you to travel with a camera outside of the USA and if you do then they will not help with a broken camera which is practically brand new. Overall the camera appears to be a good buy due to the excellent features, but I can't use any of the features due to the constant errors.

Fantastico!!!
5 Star Review   By SpArKle on Sony - Official Store - May 17, 2011

I enjoy taking pictures with this camera. The amazing features such as: Panoramic pictures,3D video and pictures, scene selection works perfectly crisp and clear, smooth zoom, and especially fast movement, are my favorite. It is a little weight on my hands but that doesn't bother me and its logical why. I wish I could post more pics here but these should convince you of the vividness you can take with this camara fantastico!

Very versatile point & shoot digital camera
5 Star Review   By JohnWho on Sony - Official Store - May 15, 2011

The pan features are simply amazing, what used to take 90 minutes of stitching, I can now do In-Camera. With all the built-in presets, I can more easily focus in on, the reason I have the the camera to begin with... My subject. The most sterling recommendations I can offer for those riding the fence on purchasing this technology - the ability to perform post-edit in-camera... It's creating the image prior to shutter-release. Please let me know what you think of my Images.

Almost all5stars
4 Star Review   By ERKzoo on Sony - Official Store - May 10, 2011

I agree with other reviewers that the overall performance of this camera is outstanding. The low light photos are out of this world, when you select the proper scene setting. I agree that the pop up flash is extremely annoying. Once it's up, the only way to get it out of the way is to turn the dial to iSweep or Movie mode, but according to the manual, when you go into playback mode, the flash is supposed to retract (mine doesn't). Tech support said I must have faulty unit. Dealing with that right now.....Someone also wrote that HD movies can't be imported into iMovie, I struggled with that too, tech support helped me thru it (if you have both mp4 and HD videos on your memory stick, iMovie prioritizes mp4 and you have to use the VLC third party software on your HD imports, but if you have ONLY HD on the chip and camera is in HD mode, iMovie will import). Uploading some test shots.

I will not reward mediocrity 4 or 5 stars..Sorry
3 Star Review   By Calhiker on Sony - Official Store - May 9, 2011

Took this one out for a hike during Mothers Day as it arrived on the Saturday before. I took 79 pictures / videos. The First pictures I took I used the two auto setting, Auto and Auto + and I must say Its hit or miss on these two settings, From colors being off, to back ground sky's being washed out. Potraits or facial pictures seem soft and lack alittle detail compared to camera's by the big C. Now that being said once I started diving into some of the scene settings things improved, with the Sky's being the color they should be, I believe I have more to learn on this camera in order to obtain better pictures, however that draws away from the fact that this is a point and shoot and not a DSLR in which you have to tweek settings and obtain a Masters in Photography in order to obtain great pics. The flash is in a poor position. The Videos are outstanding.

EVERYTHING YOU COULD POSSIBLY WANT & MORE
5 Star Review   By Alianna on Sony - Official Store - May 8, 2011

Sony need to give us a firmware update that allows us to set the level of jpeg compression like our other Sony cameras have. Giving the ability to shut the NR down would be good too.

Oh yeah, this is it!!
5 Star Review   By Powersludge on Sony - Official Store - May 8, 2011

This is becoming a common theme on the reviews that I have read so far and I will start my review with the shortcomings of the flash location. It is location, mind you, that is awkward and not the flash itself! The flash is incredible and offers some amazing night shots. I think it is worth it to get used to positioning my finger just behind the flash to have the extra flash throw that the recessed flash provides. The colours this camera provides are excellent and objects at motion are fantastic! It is incredible to see time seem to stop at the touch of a button but that is indeed the case! I have had great success with the auto + feature as well and only switch the selector dial occasionally to suit certain environments better. This camera does it all and if you are familiar with DSLR cameras at all you will have a common ally in the HX9V! Capable of doing most anything that my Nikon does and yet it fits in my pocket! Macro is pristine! Action shots crystal clear! I will mention that the panoramic could be a bit wider but with the zoom it is a small complaint and one I'll get over quickly!! The zoom is great! It actually works out to 24X if you use the on-camera feature to zoom in 8X on whatever picture you have shot at 16X and then save the selected image with virtually no pixel difference! I was blown away with the detail in pictures shot at 16X as well and look forward to opportunities to utilize this feature more in the future! The construction of this camera is of durability. Of course I have only had mine for a few weeks but the construction of the camera gives the outward appearance of it anyway. The camera has a weight to it that is uncommon in similar sized cameras but easily handled in spite and the thumb rest on the back is perfect for an added grip on shots taken at an angle! Again, the pop-up flash worries me a bit and I would hate to bump it or bang it somehow. If there was a way to update the software to allow it to be closed manually this would put this issue to bed for me however! The battery life leaves a bit to be desired, as does the inability to charge while synced to the computer. It would be nice if you could juice up the battery a bit while you were downloading pictures! The cost of a replacement battery is insane, especially if it is only going to hold as much juice as the one supplied but a quick trip to eBay fixed that in a heartbeat! I haven't tried a remote charge yet but I am going to have to if I hope to keep an extra one charged at all times. Also, because I haven't the camera for a lengthy amount of time, I can't comment on how long a battery will hold a full charge in storage or inside an inactive camera, as I haven't set mine down since I got it! This camera leaves me wanting a BluRay burner as well. The video that I have shot has been pristine on my LED TV, even when compressed to fit a DVD but I would love to see what it looks like in the codec that I have shot it in! It is hard to preview video that is shot at the best quality setting except on the camera and the cable required to view on an HDTV is a pricey accessory from Sony! Would have been a nice addition to the box even for a few extra dollars. The included PMB software is actually pretty good and I find myself using it a lot more than I thought I would initially. Of course, it is the only way I currently have to make AVCHDVDs, so that might have something to do with it! The Party-Shot IPT-DS2 has finally shown up today through internet retailers but I can't seem to find it on Sony's website. Will likely order it next week regardless and try it out as well, combined with face, smile and blink automation I can only begin to imagine how cool the pictures will be! All in all this camera has everything! The pros definitely outweigh any of the cons! I actually sent back an HX7V for this camera and it was worth the wait to get it!! I would recommend anyone to buy this camera for any situation! Even seasoned photographers will find a use for this camera and like myself, find themselves reaching for this tiny little point and shoot instead of their much more expensive photo equipment!!

THANKS SONY, THIS CAMERA ROCKS !!!
5 Star Review   By Elroy on Sony - Official Store - May 3, 2011

I've had a Nikon D90 DSLR, Sony HD Videocam, and Sony HX5V; My HX9V has replaced them all. I wanted a fast, versatile, high-zoom, compact that takes exceptional stills, and HD 1080 video. I was not disappointed. Controls are very intuitive. I know that others list the size as a negative, but for me, it's a positive. The camera is small enough to fit in my jeans pocket (a little bulky), but large enough to fit comfortably in my big hands. The grips make this camera particularly comfortable to hold. An unexpected feature is the ability to shoot stills and video simultaneously. You can shoot video by pressing the record button, whether you are in video or still-pic mode. However, in still-picture mode, it takes about 5-seconds for the recording to start (compared to 1-second in video mode) The zoom lens operates smoothly, is fairly quiet, and the speed is decent (but not fast) Some have complained about the flash location and the pop-up design. But that doesn't bother me. I've always supported cameras with my left hand from the bottom, anyway. The flash goes down when you turn the camera off, switch to view mode, or you can press it down manually. When viewing images, the camera displays them in the mode in which they are taken (portrait / landscape) Another really cool thing, if you turn the camera sideways, it rotates the picture accordingly. If you insert a SD card with pictures from another camera, the HX9V will format them so they're viewable on this camera. I'm tired of bulky DSLRs, Changing Lenses, Adding Flash Attachments, Carrying Camera Bags, Separate Video Cameras, and small cameras that don't fit my big hands. Admittedly, I'm not a professional photographer. But THIS CAMERA ROCKS! THANKS SONY! I would love it if this camera had a viewfinder. But fortunately, the LCD is large and bright.

Grand Performance with Only One Apparent Flaw...
4 Star Review   By Chatterbrain on Sony - Official Store - May 3, 2011

I have owned this camera for about two weeks. I recently returned from my first ever and much needed European vacation and I shot a total of over 3 hours of video and 400 still images. Superb quality in both departments. Fantastic feature set. Sony hit a home run with this camera. HOWEVER, from out of the box, when recording a movie, the zoom was not smooth. It consistently shakes slightly at the same spot every time, both when zooming in and when zooming out which causes the picture to jar a bit from right to left. I believe it happens when the lens makes its final transition out of the cavity. The gear mechanism is probably to blame. Poor quality control in this regard. I have been a Sony enthusiast for over 25 years and this has broken my heart, especially since it fowled up some of my once in a lifetime footage. Such a great camera in EVERY other respect. I wanted to use the camera to capture life on the run in a household of many, many children (7). I was hoping to have one device to grab all of life's moments with crystal clarity. But alas, I may have to buy the Sony HDR-CX700V camcorder that I have had my eye on since CES 2011 in order to record rock solid 1080/60p video. In spite of all this, I may still keep this camera just for the superb still image quality I witnessed while using the fantastic Backlight Correction HDR, iSweep Panorama and Background Defocus features. Come on Sony...you can do it...just put a little more TLC into the mechanics of the lens mechanism...please...we believe in you!

Battery problems
2 Star Review   By Hickory on Sony - Official Store - Apr 29, 2011

The Sony battery provided has a very low capacity and is sold for around six times the going rate for a 3.5 watt-hour li battery pack. This camera's software rejects superior back-up batteries. I'm not any more enthusiastic about a one off battery system than I was about scrambling for years to keep a Memory Stick reader with me everywhere I went. Batteries are expensive enough and short lived enough without your code imagineering catastrophic failure from a perfectly utilitarian power supply-because you didn't get a cut of the sale price? Evidently the Memory Stick related sales dive didn't teach corporate respect for their remaining customers. Not going through the same thing with batteries. This time you are getting it back. I'm going to see the fiords with something reliable, no more little 'on boot' surprises for me!

Very good camera... But...
4 Star Review   By Keck27 on Sony - Official Store - Apr 28, 2011

I love this camera. I had a video cam I picked up from best buy and returned because I didnt see my self watching videos all thy much. So after a lot of research I jumped on this cam. It's great! Now I will say that if you are one of these people that just wants to turn it on and take pix then it will work but not be the camera for the money. I took pix of birds on a feeder flying in and leavin from about 15 yards zoomed in at 15x. With the scene selection set to active the pix turned out great. But when I set it to the auto plus selection they came put just average. Less pix that I can actually use because of blur. So if you want a Great camera that has dozens of settings for different types of situations then this is the camera for you. I would be more than happy to send some of my pics over. Just let me know. Also, before I end... The zoom is freaking amazing. Both for pix and videos. I took a pic of my neice playing softball in rightfield. (she's 5 so it's at the edge of the grass just past first). The first was with no zoom and the second was maxed out with a girl running to first. Pic was great. Nice to see the difference a true zoom can have on the way you take pix. It was funny there was a guy beside me taking pix of his little girl and he had this huge camera strapped around his neck. And here I am pulling this small killer camera outta my cargo shorts pocket taken pix and videos that I'm sure are just as good!!! Firstt time a camra made me feel cool!!!!! Gotta love it. I do have a design issue: the flash popping up sux. I've caught myself with my hand on the area where the flash is and it try's o open and stops. Also, after the flash pops up and takes a pic I can't figure out how to get it back down beside turning the dang camera off. I've tried turning off the flash after taking the pic and also tried changing the selector wheel on the top of the camera. But no luck. I hope someone can help me with this or Sony can issue a update of some kind that fixes this issues. If this is fixed or I'm educated about the issue then I will give it all 5 stars!

Pocket D-SLR and HD camera too!
5 Star Review   By Fibi on Sony - Official Store - Apr 27, 2011

You would be amazed by the picture quality delivered by this cam in any conditions especially at night. For panoramic shooters, This is it and especially the 3D feature. As for the price, this cyber-shot is one of the most expensive but it deserve every penny of it!!

One Major Flaw
3 Star Review   By RSPSLD on Sony - Official Store - Apr 26, 2011

-I found the capabilities of this camera to be exceptional except for one feature, the flash. -It is a recessed flash that automatically pops up when the camera decides it needs it. The problem is the location. It is recessed on the top left of the camera, exactly where most people would put their forefinger of their left hand while holding the camera. Since you don't know when it will pop up, your finger will likely be in the way, preventing it from popping up and you potentially will lose the shot. -Another bad feature of the automatic flash is the fact that it does not automatically retract once extended. You may not need it again for another photograph, but it will stay extended in the way of where you would like to place your left hand, until you turn the camera off. -I would love all the specs on the DSC-HX9V with the non-extension flash set up of the DSC-HX7V and DSC-HX5V.

Best Camera for the Money!!!!
5 Star Review   By EROD on Sony - Official Store - Apr 24, 2011

This camera has it all! 3D, HD movie, GPS, 16x Zoom! The picture quality is awesome. The 24mm lens takes great action shots, even in low light. The auto mode truly is auto. You can go from close up macro, to long range zoom, to indoor lowlight, and take great pictures without ever changing anything on the camera. No other camera does this better! Very happy with my purchase.

21 Century Flagship Point & Shoot
5 Star Review   By Culchie on Sony - Official Store - Apr 18, 2011

Just stopped into the Sony Store on Madison Ave. where they had the new DSC-HX9V on display. I played with it and was blown away. The construction is superb.(there is even a finger securing/rest area on the back of the camera!). This is the 16.2mp point and shoot camera that the World has been waiting for. The zoom is excellent. I maxed it out, hand-held and the image (instant image capture) was sharp, crisp, full tones and with exceptional color saturation. The controls are well placed and it is comfortable to use. It is a solidly built camera. It has several sweep options (including the newest HD sweep). I used the movie aspect and the 1080 60p results were very impressive. Sony got the cameras into the store on Friday and they quickly sold out. I've ordered one on-line from the Sony Store (they are in stock as of this review date). I look forward to taking with me when I go back to Ireland in May. It is the perfect answer to a light-weight travel camera. The quality is first class. Thanks, Sony.
