The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-F707 is a digital camera featuring a Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar lens with a 5x optical and 2x digital zoom. Included also is a 5MP CCD. As an older model, the unit is restricted to low-resolution video capture up to 320x240 (high-quality). Plus the included Memory Stick only supports 15-second movies. There is however a ClipMotion function that’ll combine 10 still images into an animated GIF. Other than that, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-F707 takes still shots up to 2560x1920; includes infrared illumination and an infrared filter for taking photos in complete darkness; and can connect to a PC via either USB or, even better, via a built-in Memory Stick reader. 5 Star Review   By member Fishnlawyr - Mar 4, 2012

Strengths: flexibility, lens, quality of picture

Weakness: zoom isn't quite what I want

I've had this camera for right at 10 years and it still does everything I ask. It's just that I know what not to ask for. 15 second video is great for internet (only)I have Pacific sunsets blown up to what I think some people will call poster size and framed. I have close-ups of my cat with such amazing detail (whiskers and individual hairs). I used the camera for action shots at the Cotton Bowl. This camera, while considered obsolete by many, is still a great camera.

3 Star Review   By member axthetax - Jul 14, 2004

Strengths: Reliable, fast, excellent macro capabilities

Weakness: Only 5X optical zoom, metering problems

Not the most user-friendly digital camera I've owned, but it takes the highest quality pictures. While I've generally been happy with it, it has a very annoying "feature"- when using the camera in manual focus mode, the camera re-adjusts the focus when you hold the shutter button down halfway, causing me to have to refocus every time. All told, I would probably go with a different model if I had it to do over again. The picture quality is great, but this camera is not pleasant to deal with when doing macro photography or any kind of photography where you would want to focus manually.

Strengths: High resolution, nightshots, manual control, great photos

Weakness: Flash may washout subjects in close range, memory stick media maxes out at 256MB per stick.

Great camera with great functions. Takes really quality pictures. I have shot thousnads of images and am completely satisfied. However, there are some minor issues with the camera - the built-in flash is not of top quality. When shooting with flash, often shots are missed. I will recommend this camera highly to anyone who is looking for somethig in this range. But, there are newer (and probably better) models available from Sony as well.

5 Star Review   By member raytsai - Nov 19, 2002

Strengths: Great lenses, sharp photos, Awesome zoom, best digital zoom compared to most other "name-brands", night-shot and auto-focus ability, great manual controls, great photo quality (good saturation rates)

Weakness: bulky, non-intuitive placement of buttons on the lens "barrel", sony memory stick limitations (128MB as of 11/02), proprietary battery, very hard to rotate 90 deg. for non-portrait shots

Overall the camera is top notch, the only real caveat is that there is a better version now available w/ the Sony DSC-F717 model (this one's the 707 if you haven't noticed already). In terms of photo quality, it's unmatched for the most part. Maybe the Nikon Coolpix 4500 (the 5000/5700 models are def. lower!) and the Minolta 7Hi can compete, but I still like the f707/f717 even if sony isn't a "camera" name-brand. The quality of the pictures and camera shows. I haven't seen Canon's new G3 up front yet, but I haven't heard anything to show me that the Sony F7x7 isn't the top dog. This is not to say that this camera doesn't have it's issues though. It's a rather unsightly camera for most initially and it took me a period of getting use to before I started appreciating it's shape as useful for taking pictures. The camera isn't a point and shoot you can hand to a stranger and expect them to use it, but any camera enthusiast will be over-joyed at how many manual options are available. The main reason this camera isn't good for a non-gadget family is the button placement. You can see all sorts of buttons on the barrel which is great for using the space, but you find yourself searching for buttons all over the place. My final gripe is the 4-way hat switch that has the select button when you push the middle of the switch. This is used to select the various menus and is not very easy to push, especially if you don't have the delicate finger size of a petite girl

5 Star Review   By member btpheritage - Nov 12, 2002

Strengths: The camera's automatic focus is easy and takes great pictures. The menus on the camera is easy to use and understand. I like the 5 mega pixels.

Weakness: The Mpeg 320 by 240 16fps is good, but I wish that the camera would take 720x480 to make DVD Movies. But no still camera does. The manual is weak in how to use the extra features.

Overall I am Really happy with the camera. I read the reviews that the camera has a severe white balancing problem, but I didn't find that to be a problem at all. You can control the flash to low, normal, or high. You can take night shots in the dead of night without a flash, but it comes out with a green like gray color at about 1 mega pixel in quality. If you are taking pictures of animal life at night or a spy camera, it is good for that. I bought the F707 at $699 when the F717 was just released. Which is a great deal compared to the higher F717. I called Sony and they couldn't sell me that the changes on the F717 is all that much better for a $300 price difference.

Strengths: 5X Optical zoom. Flexible point-and-shoot or manual control. Excellent, crisp photos. Fast focus, good write time. Easy to use menus and controls. Good battery life. Direct Windows XP compatible.

Weakness: Limited capacity of Memory Sticks. Haven't found any others.

This camera is INCREDIBLE. I actually bought a lesser camera, and took it back the next day to get the 707, which is the one I really wanted. I bough this camera to be my replacement for film cameras. This baby has great zoom capability, focuses quickly and takes SPECTACULAR photos. It is easy to use, the features can be very quickly mastered. I took it right out of the box, and did a full day of telephoto sports shots at soccer games, and the results were astounding. Some complain of its bulk, but if compared to a traditional SLR body with a telephoto comparable to to the 707's zoom capability, it's actually very compact. The compatibility with Win XP makes it foolproof to download the photos. I couldn't afford a $4,000 digital SLR, so this full featured 5MP, 10X zoom dynamo for $800 was a great investment for me. I expect many years of excellent performance. Thanks, Sony.

Strengths: Picture Quality, Ease of use and focusing system!

Weakness: dumbed down hot shoe

This has a picture quality better then any digital camera that I've yet seen on the market. When you compare this to the Nikon D1X, it is capable of every bit as high quality pictures for thousands of dollars less. It can focus faster then 99% of all digital cameras under $2000.00. Manual focus ring allows for a more traditional style manual focus. The Night Framing mode lets you focus without any light whatsoever. The built in flash is stronger then all the other prosumer cameras built in flash. The camera houses the best lens out of all non-DSLR cameras and is easily capable of high speed, high quality shots. There will be very little not to like about this camera if you give it a try.

Strengths: Sharp lens and ability to focus in dim light.

Weakness: Consistently underexposes in most conditions, especially bright, contrasty situations. Used it side by side with a Fuji costing 1/4 the price and in post production spent more time with Sony images.

It's NOT a point and shoot if you want or need really great images. You can get them if you use the on camera controls and spend time with Photoshop. You'll find images underexposured by 1/3 to 2 stops. To save time during printing or processing try using the EV settings and do some testing. Also, expect to buy an external flash to get the flash pictures you want.

Strengths: The 5 plus megapixels allows me to make corrections to any errant photographs (except poor focusing). It's almost as good as a 35mm camera quality and feature wise.

Weakness: I have to compensate for the white balance when using the camera indoors. The flash appears to "wash" out the subjects in the viewfinder however when I print them out they look normal.

This is my fifth digital camera (320,1.1,1.3,2.3) and it's the best yet. I'm a manufacturer's dream since I always want to try new products. I started out just as a novelty but now it's replaced my 35mm. I've taken over two thousand photos with mostly superior results (but not as good as my brother 5.4 megapixel Nikon Dx). I agree with most of the other reviews. This camera has its strengths and weaknesses. I'd buy it again even though it's a little pricey.

Strengths: Many fancy features

Weakness: Serious white balance problem when flash used. Very bad service from sony

I purchased this product and found that it has very serious white balance problem when flash light used. Sony knew this problem and developed a procedure to fix this problem. But the procedures they said are all deceits. They just paid the lip service. It will cost you a lot of time and trouble to deal sony service man. They defaulted the promised service and delivery date again and again. Do count on sony's service /repair department.

Strengths: I like the zoom and the way it can focus really fast, It has a star burst that will allow you to take 3 pictures at once. This real cool.

Weakness: The red eye reduction makes the object you are photograping stay still to long before snapping the photo. This is real hard to do with small kids.

I love this camera. I purchased it for fun and it has turned into a hobby. I take it everywhere we go it has been wonderful to take pictures of my family. I am thinking about purchasing another one for ny neice who has 2 small children. If you want a digital camera this is the one to buy.

Strengths: Picture clarity, zoom, resolution, swivel lens, double viewfinders.

Weakness: Extra long lens barrel, no fluorescent white balance, flash somewhat too intense--causes washing out.

This is my second digital camera, and I learned what I wanted from my first one. This was the right choice since I can't affort the C***n D60. The camera does everything well. Even the shutter lag can be turned into an advantage. Simply press the shutter half way to let the camera meter and focus, then wait for the right moment to snap the picture. The final press is instantaneous. This also allows you to meter and focus an object not in the center of the final picture and reposition the camera to fit the scene, then snap. Here's what I have found: The zoom allows candid people shots at some distance from subjects to keep them natural, relaxed. The high resolution permits almost unlimited post-processing on the image. I had to reduce built-in flash to [-] to prevent washout of brightest areas. Point your flash attachment up for better lighting and reduced shadows. Must color correct in the computer to kill the deathly yellow cast from fluorescents. Recommended add-ons, in order: - lens hood--cheap rubber one will do, just watch for vignetting on wide shots - 64 &/or 128K Memory Sticks - polarizing filter - flash attachment (manufacturer's own) - flash bar with grip to move the flash from faces and minimize red eye - 2x telephoto and 1/2x wide-angle lens attachments Buy this camera if you can afford it.

Strengths: size, lens range, quality, ease of use,

wonderful pictures, excellent product, extremely pleased with purchase. The camera has a large lcd viewer on the back, with adjustable brightness through the menu, I like how the lens and body rotate which allows me to view the shot and hold camera close to body to steady it for the shot. With 5.24 meg pixels, this camera should stay current for a while.

Strengths: EASY TO USE.

Weakness: BUY THE LARGER MEMORY CHIP FOR SURE.

I wanted a digital camera with high quality results (like a 35mm) and i got it! I can zoom in on outfielder daughters playing fastpitch softball with the ball still in mid-flight, love the 1/1000th per second shot! Setup movies to high quality and it takes great mpg's with great sound! Uploads real fast to PC and the MGI Photsuite software makes it easy to touch up my little errors. Took 65 high-quality pics and made 3 high-quality mpg's on the 128meg memory card, kept 16meg for extra. Thanks Sony!

Strengths: Excellent color graduation, brilliant lens, near-unlimited possibilities. Very good instructions. Macro abilities good.

Weakness: Still prefer viewfinder as in SLR cameras. 16Mb memory stick supplied a unnecessary shortcut at the price. Holding the camera is a bit awkward, the release button could have been more prominent.

I never thought I'd see the day when my trusty old Nikon F2S would be obsolete, but it seems to have come. Western Australia is a sad place to do photography, but with the 707 I seem able to get the better of the harsh lighting conditions, something I had trouble with using film. Ugh! Still can't see why they (Sony) didn't supply at least a 64Mb Memory Stick as standard. Look forward to resume taking pictures at the rate I used to years ago!! As to being one of the best I don't really know as this is my first digital camera. But it deserves a top ranking regardless, because it produces pictures way beyond my expectations.

Strengths: This camera has everything you could ever need, and then many pluses on top of that. Zooming and cropping of stored photos was a great feature to discover.

Weakness: Lag time between shutter press and actual recording.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS CAMERA. The users guide arrived they day after the camera, but it was so easy to use that I had already figured out most of the features. Soften the blow for the cost of accessories (charger, battery, memory stick, filters, bag, etc) by shopping the net and considering other brands.

Strengths: excellent on evening shots, focus, macro (2 cm!!!). All around prosumer camera and long battery life compared to Dimage series, good handling grip and feel

Weakness: Red is too sharp, ISO max at 400 on manual mode. Price tag...

It's a very good camera around the market. supreme macro focus. The night shot is just too good on making no flash photo instead of long exposure that makes trouble to the CCD. One of the best around the market after Canon G2

Strengths: 5 Megapixel, 5x optical zoom, 10x digital zoom, threaded lens for add-ons (big plus) = Instant Gratification with 8x10+ perfect images!

Weakness: Windows XP ready (DON'T LOAD THE DRIVERS FOR EITHER THE CAMERA OR THE MEMORY STICK READ/WRITER - Sony's CD's don't tell you that, but their tech support will.) Photo editing package is weak.

Since the drivers are pre-loaded into WindowsXP, I shouldn't have installed the ones which came with the camera. Everytime I used the USB (either camera or memroy stick reader) the system would reboot automatically! Sony's tech support didn't have any answer for me besides a fresh format and re-installation of XP. Once that was figured out, all went painlessly and seemlessly. The camera itself is a dream. Macro let me snap a shot from 3cm away, and the zoom is great as well. Bottom line: Excellent product, poor software labeling and picture editing.

Strengths: Sharp, crisp, detailed photos. easy to use. love the choice of using either the viewfinder or lcd screen.

Weakness: lag time between focus and photo record (shutter)

the 5 megapixels really make a difference when printing photos; even when shooting at less than the max 2560x1930 the photos are sharp and detailed when printed at 8x10 size. I would definitely buy the f707 again.

Strengths: Its not film.

Weakness: Only that I didnt buy it sooner.

Better than any 35 mm camera out there. This digital camera made me sell all of my 35 mm cameras. (7) I am so over film. The micro benefits that you get with film are so not even worth it anymore when you look at what you can do with digital. Digital photography will take over within the next year guaranteed. The only reason why people still rave about film is because they have $1200-1500 invested in a dying technology, and they can find no other way to deal with it. Hail digital!!

Strengths: Fast lens, 5x zoom , EVF, operates in complete darkness, holographic AF, excellent pictures, ergonomic controls, rotating lens, wide feature range, excellent build quality, long battery life, sound

Weakness: Uses expensive Memory Stick cards with limited capacity, only 16MB card supplied, rather large and heavy, awkward shape for case, no PC control or user firmware upgradability.

This camera is a joy to use. It feels good and gives excellent photos. There's so much in it that I'm still learning how to use it - not a camera for the technologically challenged :) Choice was between this one or a Canon G2 - both look very good. The lens, EVF and night shot capability persuaded me in the end. This is my second unit. The first was returned because of a faulty USB interface.

Strengths: cant take a bad picture even if you wanted to.

Weakness: its a little bit of an odd hold the lens swivels but to places you really wouldn't need it to.

this camera is an excellent choice for anyone in the need to experiment with full control especially at the higher res, available, i wAS originally interested in the minolta but couldn't get my hands on one. this camera is definitley recommended.

Strengths: Colors, LCD Display, strenght construction, excelent lense with great macro

Weakness: nothing

It's very versatile, I compare with Fuji film 9600 and its really grater than that. The Fuji film has more pixel but the Sony CyberShot DSC-F707 has more vivid color and details.

Strengths: Light weight - Easy to use - Controls handy in their placement - Short learning curve.

The camera was easy for me to learn. It's NOT a 35mm camera, but a great addition to your photo needs. Be aware of the extras they don't tell you about, although YOU may not want or need them.(Separate battery charger - extra battery - extra memory - seperate memory stick reader). The price on Sony's carying case is overpriced in my opinion. I purchased a case elsewhere MUCH cheaper. I would purchase this camera again.

Strengths: Very feature packed. Incredible info-lithium battery. great image quality.

Weakness: Very few. Poor location of red eye reduction mode. Doesn't display picture info in quick review mode.

A very excellent camera. It has taken a little time to get used to all of the features, but when I did, there was hardly a shot I couldn't take. Since it's not quite a pro camera, action photography is more limited but can be very successful with a few compromises. When shooting a gymnastics meet of my nephew, I often found my self in a dilema on whether to shoot in burst mode, knowing I would have to wait 30 or 40 seconds to shoot again, or to pick single, high speed shots very carefully. I decided to mostly shoot the single, high spped shots so I could shoot again in a few moments. I love the fact that your location in the menus remain when you come back to the menu again, so you don't always have to renavigate to an option again. This is great for quickly changing the ISO or switching between burst mode and single shot. Sony has obviously put a lot of thought into the details of this camera making it very user friendly. The design may seem a little wierd at first but when you go to use it, you find that it makes more sense then most camera designs. I don't think there is a better camera for the price.

Strengths: Pictures better than most 35mm SLRs. Feature laden. Superior lens. Battery seems to last forever. I love the design, the large lens makes the camera easy to hold steady.

Weakness: None to this point.

After reading many reviews I chose the 707 as my first digital camera. Turns out to be an excellent choice. Even with all the features it's easy to learn to use. The price of memory sticks has just dropped dramatically and brings there cost more in line with CF and SM.

Strengths: Excelent lense with great macro. Fast opporation as compared to Olympus E-10/E-20. Greta picuure quality (better then all of the compitition).

Weakness: Factory recall, make sure to get one in a good lot.

This is the best digicam I have owned to date. It beats the e-10 hands down for features. Professional 8x10 prints look perfact! The only drawback it the cost of memory sticks, something you should consider if you do a lot of traveling....

Strengths: Great Lens, 5.0 megapixel , good weight and balance

Weakness: Flash... Red Eye.

Camera is great..very sharp ..The view finder is great almost like using an SLR. The memory stick is "Usable" I wish they made a 1 gig.. (ETA is 2002).. The flash is a very serious problem!! The camera defaults to F20 and a 40th of a second at asa 100.. That means you really need a dark room or you will get red flash pictures from the ambient light.. Sony has this great white balance selection in the non-flash mode.. But as soon as the flash is engaged the with balance goes to automatic.. It wiuld be much better if you could set the white balance to the room light and have the flash fill-in. But Lets face it.. the 707 is a very high-end point and shoot and unless you are willing to spend $4-5000 on a Nikon D1-x Put on a 80a filter and stand still .. It give you great results.. I wouldn't trade my 707 for anything..

An excellent camera in all respects.Very satisfied. On the minus side: the cost of Sony memory sticks is still too high compared to compactflash and stops at 128MB.

Strengths: Excellent pictures when flash is not used. Unlike F505 this has a colored viewfinder.Night vision is great. Holo-graphic infra-red works fine.

Weakness: Serious problem with flash photography.

As mentioned earlier this camera had a software issue concernig white balance. I had to send my camera in for repairs. Sony fixed that problem. However I have noticed another problem. On an autoflash mode the flash pops-up regardless of the lighting condition in the room. If there is enough light in the room the camera should turn off the flash automatically. This never happens. So if you are using autoflash and there is enough light in the room, flash always comes no and this leaves orange and blue tints all over the picture.

Strengths: Excellent Carl Zeiss lens; flexibility in Aperture, shutter and manual mode; quick auto focus

Weakness: significant time-lag in flash mode. Memory stick is expensive. Thin manual.

This camera affords me the flexibility of tailoring my shots for greater control or using auto mode for quick point and shoot at casual events. I like the solid all-metal body and the barrel lens rests comfortably in my hand with the thumb resting near the zoom control. The 5 megapixel is quite amazing for this price and the EVF tells me alot about the type of shot I would get using the experimental settings. My only quibbles are the time-lag when using flash (I often ended up with closed eyes or turned heads), and the expense of the the proprietary memory sticks. Otherwise, I have been more than satisfied with the results.

Strengths: Great Pictures, excellent blow-up possiblities with 5MB to work with, great color balance, easy and clear menus, very flexible.

Weakness: Have not found anything yet.

This camera had a soft-ware problem when first issued in which the Flash mode creased blue edges to sharp lines. This was fixed and Sony did a full recall and installed a new firmware chip. My camera was not in this first batch, and it works great with no blue edges. The camera is full featured and I will note two nice things not found in many cameras. The view-finder has a simple viewfinder focus adjustment so my wife and I, with different eye-sights, can use the same camera without glasses. Secondly, it has a "white adjust" so that if you think your shots are off-balance, you can trim the color exposures to your liking, for example adding a touch of red to make people images warmer. Other useful features include "dark lighting" which is an infra-red invisible light to light up people in total darkness. This was the source of the "x-ray lens" for the Sony cam-corder, that could see in the dark. It also has a holo-graphic infrared focussing light for auto-focusing in dim light, without disturbing your subject. I was a little annoyed by the Sony "Spec Sheet" which said 5x optical zoom and 10x digital zoom. The digital zoom is only 2x, and the 10x is the combined total zoom.

Strengths: Great image Quality at 5mp - good lens and focusing system

Weakness: Flash photography has a lot of serious problems

This camera exhibits a lot of strange behaviors with the Flash system. In Manual Mode Flash the white balance shifts strongly blue as the aperature is closed or shutter speed increased from the default at F2 and 1/40th. At the defaults there is a lot of image bluring from ambient light as well as shallow depth of field. In manual mode if flash is selected the viewfinder gets dark after focus acquisition. In the manual mode the white balance selection is reverted to auto. On the good side - if flash photography is not your primary use of the camera - you will be very happy with sharp richly colored high resolution images.
