Sony Alpha NEX-7 Review
5 Star Review Imaging Resource - Dec 31, 1969

Making quite a leap for compact system cameras both in terms of image quality and camera control, the Sony NEX-7 really impressed us. We used words like "astonishing" and "amazing" when describing image quality, both printed and onscreen, because the NEX-7's images are even sharper than the A77's. And for an APS-C sensor to approach the quality of the Nikon D3X, well, that is saying something. Its Tri-Navi interface takes the NEX-7's camera control beyond the extra dials we find on other enthusiast digital cameras: Just a single button allows the dials to jump from controlling exposure settings to focus, white balance, D-Range, and Creative Style settings. An excellent electronic viewfinder is tucked in the upper left corner, offering a really big view while keeping the top deck nice and flat, unlike most other designs. The result is a camera custom-built for photographers who want the most control combined with the best image quality. Isn't that what we've all been waiting for? Read our Sony NEX-7 review for more!

5 Star Review photographyblog.com - Jan 4, 2012

The Sony NEX-7 is a new compact system camera with a long list of photographer-friendly features. Offering a 24.3 megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor, 1080p HD movies, high-res 3 inch tilting screen, 10fps burst shooting, built-in electronic viewfinder and pop-up flash, the NEX-7 seems to be on paper at least a very exciting proposition. Sony Alpha NEX-7 (with 18-55mm lens)
4 Star Review cnet.com - Feb 29, 2012

THE GOOD: The Sony Alpha NEX-7 delivers excellent raw photo and solid video quality in a package thats beautifully and functionally designed, yet relatively compact. Though expensive for an essentially nonprofessional camera, it doesnt seem overpriced. THE BAD: As with many competing products, the cameras JPEG algorithms need some optimization, some aspects of operation feel a little laggy, and its missing some useful features. THE BOTTOM LINE: With a lot to like and just a little to dislike, the Sony Alpha NEX-7 comes up a winner, albeit an expensive one.

Love this camera!!! review from a beginner.
5 Star Review By emi3799 on Sony - Official Store - Oct 26, 2013

I am a amateur photographer. I owned this camera for over a year now & love it. The camera is easy to navigate. The body feels great on my hands. It takes awesome photos, I am amazed with the details. The attached photo was taken under normal household lighting in my living room. I used the 18-55 mm lens that came with the camera. No special lighting or equipment, just my camera as I got it from Sony. I bounced the flash from the ceiling by holding it down with my finger (a trick I learned from youtube). This is a great camera for taking family photos.

Cheap product that cost a lot
1 Star Review By Lukes on Sony - Official Store - Jul 12, 2013

I was excited when I bought it and loved the compact size and the three dial control and didn't mind paying the price. If I had rated this 6 months ago I would have given this 4 star like others. However i quickly learned a lot about this camra that i wish wasn't the case. Product is built cheap. The HDMI connector came out after first use and stopped working. I researched online and found a lot of simialr compaints on this model. Sony is not taking any responibility for the poor design. They are not even covering it under manufacture warranty. It is costing us $185 + shipping. Lenses are limted and expensive. Don't expect picture quality of a DSLR. You can pay less for a DSLR and get better picture quality. Pictures taken Indoor and in Low light are especially poor. I had to use really high ISO rating to get right exposure, which inturn made pictures relly grainy.

Review/ what needs to be updated
4 Star Review By fixDINODELETEplox123 on Sony - Official Store - Jul 9, 2013

I've owned this camera for about a year now, and I can happily say that it was totally worth the investment! The auto focusing with this camera is pretty gnar. The image quality is superb (I've made 40x32 prints) and wouldn't feel uncomfortable printing even bigger. Even though this camera is the epitome of awesomeness, I think there are some small things that need to be addressed if not in a firmware update, hopefully in the making of the new Pro nex. So here are my list of CONS: -The biggest CON about this camera for me is the delete takes WAY too long. PLEASE fix this with either a firmware update, or when you release the new (nex-8, 7n what ever your going to call it) -this camera should have a standard hot shoe -shooting at night with this camera, although I like shooting with the evf....I find it to be way more difficult then shooting with a regular dslr. So maybe there's a way you could implement a new feature exclusively for future nex 7 (nex-8) that can make night shooting more pleasurable. -the future nex 7 (nex 8) body needs a different finish....Something that doesn't attract so much dust. That's my small list of little peeves that I hope will get addressed in the making of the new nex 7. Really though, if you can fix the dino delete, that would be amazing! haha

Really though, if you can fix the dino delete, that would be amazing! haha

Remote shutter control interface
2 Star Review By cakexner on Sony - Official Store - Jun 8, 2013

A remote shutter control interface is a pretty important feature. Ask about this feature when buying a camera like this one or any camera you intend to use for creative photography. You cannot find this information in the specs on Nex cameras. I have always bought and owned Sony cameras with varying degrees of satisfaction, however I bought a Nex 3 and then (within 60 days of purchase) learned sometimes it is very important to use a remote shutter release. However the my camera did not have that interface. Very frustrating. A point and shoot you might not care, but cameras like DSLRs and Nex's you will care very much.

Love at first shutter click
5 Star Review By Zanzibar on Sony - Official Store - May 5, 2013

I cannot say enough about this camera. The image quality is comparable to the world's best full size SLR's (including Sony's own), but it cost less than half the price of its full-size brethren. The NEX-7's nimble size, low weight, and amazing image quality has convinced me to shun full-sized cameras forever! With the new power zoom 18mm-200mm lens, professional quality video is also easy. In fact, amateurs may never need to change lenses with the new power zoom lens, Can't say enough good things about this camera. I have never been more satisfied with a camera purchase!

5 Star Review By TerryMcK on Sony - Official Store - Mar 28, 2013

if you are like me. ready to move up a notch, but don't have any lenses or gear beyond a basic digital camera (a Canon G12) - and if you are not a pro, this camera and its peers will bring you far. its basic lens is useful for most general users. the criticisms i have seen seem to come from the Pros - guys who have a zeiss lens that uses a different mount. or folks who will never need a video camera built in. so.... if you are a pro, you may not need this. if not, it really does the job. small enough to fit in a coat pocket, but really ready for your best work. it will bring up your game all the way.

Not bad, but...
3 Star Review By Manosso on Sony - Official Store - Dec 18, 2012

I was looking for something better than a snapshot, but smaller than a DSRL to take on vacations. The NEX series seemed like a great option, BUT.... 1) Image quality on low-light situations could REALLY use an upgrade. High ISO images get very grainy, and any kind of movement kills the pic. So no natural pictures can be takes in the evening - you need to setup everyting first and ask everyone to stand still. 2) The flash has very few settings - it's either really bright, or really bright! So you need to step far away from the image if you just want a little bright. But then the zoom is not always enough. It does not seem Sony thought of the flash together with the low light situations. 3) All settings change have to be done by menu. And even if it does take just a few clicks and you're done... there goes the picture oportunity :o( 4) The video button ALWAYS gets in the way - and in the few situations where you actually want to use it, there's that clicking sound from something loose inside the camera. 4) Since we travel alone, we take a lot of "arm's lenght" self-pics. The 180° tilt LCD from the 5R would be perfect, but it's not there on the 5N, sadly. 5) The image layering does not make for a sharper image, but a blury one. 6) The HDR needs a REALLY GOOD upgrade. Having said all that, I really have always loved Sony cameras. I have a Canon and a Samsung as well, but they just don't compare (I gave them both to my nephews to play with), and I still use my Sony DSC-W300 with the sports pack when scubadiving (any chance of a scuba pack for the Nex series?). I'm considering the Nex-7 now as an upgrade from the 5N (specially for the control options), but would love to see the 5R pack included in it before making the purchase - especially the 180° tiltable LCD and self portrait framing. And of course, since I've already bought extra SD cards, bateries and remonte control for the 5N, it would be great to be able to use them with the new Nex-7. Any replies from Sony would be greatly appreciated! :o)

Not bad, but...
3 Star Review By Manosso on Adorama - Dec 18, 2012

I was looking for something better than a snapshot, but smaller than a DSRL to take on vacations. The NEX series seemed like a great option, BUT.... 1) Image quality on low-light situations could REALLY use an upgrade. High ISO images get very grainy, and any kind of movement kills the pic. Worth The Money
5 Star Review By Arth on Sony - Official Store - Dec 1, 2012

This is a great device. Takes brilliant pictures. This is my 4th Sony camera, before I use to own Cyber shot. This is my first Sony @ NEX series, I have to say this is a good freaking device. Those easy controls comes handy while taking pictures, you dont have to go in the menu to change them, they are right at your finger tip. Dont have to worry about focusing, just keep taking pictures it will focus really good. Also take good pictures in low light.I am adding example for low light pictures Really dont know what else to write, just got this camera like 2 days ago, still exploring this device :D looking forward what else sony will do with NEX series.

Sony Alpha NEX-7
4 Star Review Crutchfield.com

Crutchfield has collected 6 user reviews for this product with an average rating of 4.8 out of 5 stars. The most recent reviewer said, "I've been in photography for 60 years, and digital photography for over 15 years, and the Sony NEX-7 digital camera is the most exciting camera I've ever owned! In spite of the many features and capabilities it has, it quickly became familiar and easy to use, and the quality of the camera and the photographs it produces is outstanding. And don't let reviews that complain about the quality of the lens offerings deter you. The standard "kit" SEL 18-55mm lens is razor sharp and the excellent SEL-55210 lens is equally sharp and both lenses, with their built-in image stabilization, produce great photos at any focal length and shutter speed. You could do no better than purchasing this excellent new camera system, particularly through Crutchfield due to their product pricing, quick shipments, and top-quality customer service and support.."

My new Sony Nex-7
5 Star Review By Cdub on Sony - Official Store - Aug 28, 2012

This camera is fantastic. Images are amazing. Control, handling, fantastic. I love not having to carry around all the bulk of a DSLR. So much technology in this too. In camera panorama stitching, HDR, and the list goes on. Extremely well built also. Feels like a brick. I do wish it was built in Japan rather than Thailand but, nevertheless, very high quality. I just wish there were more high quality affordable lenses to really take advantage of the camera body. There are some excellent Carl Zeiss lenses but they are 'spensive! Hopefully Sony will remedy this soon as I think they are on a roll in Cameras with this Nex lineup.

Amazing IQ
5 Star Review By Nex7user on Sony - Official Store - Jul 26, 2012

I was interested in getting the NEX-5N for the longest time and will probably still get one plus the RX100. I didn't need the 24mp and was worried more about the low light. Seeing this on sale with accessories tempted me to make the purchase earlier this month. Having shot photos and videos in Yosemite for over a week, I was blown away by the image quality when I opened them up on Macbook Pro. There is still a lot to learn but with enough light, the kit lens does a great job. I also just got the zeiss though I haven't shot with it yet. My previous camera was a Powershot S100 and I have used the T3I but there's something about this camera's images . High ISO shots are pretty good though auto modes seem to push up the ISO even in bright light. The handling with the Tri Navi controls makes things much easier. And the video is great. I have a HC1 which was pretty good except indoors but this one is amazing. I love the 60p capability. And the OLED EVF. I didn't really get what the reviews were raving about when I looked through it in the Sony Store. But, outside in daylight when I looked through it at Glacier Point... wow. I used to love my S100 and was nervous about switching for my still camera. But, this is an amazing buy and an absolute joy. Great Job, Sony. You are pushing the envelope constantly and making it available for advanced users at a reasonable price. Thank you!

My First and Last Camera
5 Star Review By IcanCwhatUsay on Sony - Official Store - Jul 24, 2012

Ok, this is my first camera I've ever purchase new and that wasn't a point and shoot. I absolutely love it! I'm a novice at best and this camera is really easy to pick up and learn how too take good photos. I love all the features it comes with and the grip, the feel, THE SIZE. For me the size was the selling point but in the end it's just the icing on the cake. There is sooo much to this camera that a review no matter how in depth can cover. So here's a short blurp of the key things. The tri-navi controls are awesome. I can Find my settings quickly. I have auto focus or manual focus at the push of a button, I have my ISO at the push of a button and just about everything else at the push of a button. Though, I wish I could customize the buttons a bit more, maybe even add some, but I'm told by the pros that what I have is more than most cameras offer. I think my favorite feature on this camera is the view finder. Its what really sold me. I love the fact that it gives you a complete preview of what the photo will look like instead of just a mirror image of what my eye would see. This really helps me make corrections to photos before taking them. I really can't praise this camera enough. It's amazing. My only complaint is that the information displayed on the screen isn't customize-able enough. Other than that, it's great. if you want to contact me about it, I will give you the most unbias opinion I can offer but honestly, you really need not go anywhere else unless it's missing a feature you're looking for.

come on Sony.... you're almost there
4 Star Review By Carlt on Sony - Official Store - Jun 27, 2012

Don't get me wrong this is camera works quite well for it's size. Screen doesn't flip up (towards you# like they did on the newer Nex F series, no custom timer, no external remote, and no time with HDR or bracketing which means you have to hold the shutter for a 3 image sequence, wow. Love the A-mount hot shoe and the external hardware control so I don't have to use the awful menu system. If you bought it or will buy it you'll notice right away it has difficutly auto-focusing on what you are trying to focus on #if using spot or center focus like I do) to fix that you have to turn off the AF illuminator light which makes it work significantly better. By the way, for those of you who have this camera and have laughed at the build quality of the pop-up-flash, you can actually bend it back to use as a bounce flash which is kinda neat. I would rave about this camera all day if they just simply made a software change to allow the customer timer length and the ability to use a timer with the HDR mode and bracketing. It's a simple software fix.

5 Star Review By RalphNJ on Sony - Official Store - Jun 27, 2012

Finally got this fine camera last March 2012. So far it has exceeded all my expectations. It s quick, easy to use , have lots of power and flexilibity. I owned other cameras (mostly Olympus DSLR and semi) and this pretty much is really fun and reliable to use. Now I 'm looking to get accessories especially adapters for my Olympus lenses. If you have any recomendations on the best adapters available, feel free to advise. Salute to Sony for this awesome camera. PS, It took me a while to post my review as I wanted to make sure I am fully satisfied with this. Brought it to my vacation place and enjoyed all the pictures I have taken.

Superior Camera
5 Star Review By Mountainwoman on Sony - Official Store - Jun 24, 2012

This.camera is set up with controls that initially appeared confusing since they seemed different from the nikons, canons, and olympus cameras I have. However, now that I have shot several hundred shots with it, I find that it is a composit on the best features plus new ones others don't have. The weight is especially great when shooting candid shots and trekking through the woods looking for animal shots. Not at all disappointing.

Best Camera Purchase To Date
5 Star Review By photobug22 on Sony - Official Store - Jun 15, 2012

My original reason for purchasing this camera was I needed something lighter than my Sony A900 that I could take with me everywhere. It is the perfect size and weight for meI. I have only used it for two days and still in awe using this camera. The color, detail, clarity, etc. are superb. Of the few sample videos I have done so far the quality is unbelievable. Can't say much more than it is a bit pricey but well worth every penny.

NEX 7
5 Star Review By Cwatson50 on Sony - Official Store - Jun 7, 2012

I am not a professionsal. I wanted a camera that would take great pictures with a great zoom and carry it in my purse. (For me the A55 was too big.) IF I want manual, I have it, but usually I am so busy capturing a shot I just want to click and not make adjustments. The shots I get (24 pixel)are phenomenal and I am amazed everytime I load them into my computer. The NEX7 is an improvement over the NEX5 that had no view finder and the zoom lens caused a shadow when using the flash. I shoot every day now knowing the quality of picture I will get.

Firmware Updated Critical!
3 Star Review By dcman on Sony - Official Store - Jun 5, 2012

Great camera, but you should wait for Sony to support this product with a firmware that addresses the multitude of boneheaded user experience decisions made with the UI. Sony need not look far for a multitiude of great suggestions on how to change the usability of the camera from horrific to amazing in a single firmware release. Here's hoping Sony steps up and does a better job in post release support than they typically do across their product range...

Needs a Firmware Update
1 Star Review By JimDar on Sony - Official Store - Jun 2, 2012

I would recommend to anyone considering buying this camera to hold off until Sony fixes two MAJOR issues with the firmware. It is great to have instant video access if video is all you want this camera for. The video button is right where I've always placed my right thumb when holding a camera. I can't tell you how many times I've missed a shot because I inadvertently pressed the video button. By the time I shut off the video the shot is gone. Maddening big time! All Sony needs to do is an update that would require you to touch the video button twice to begin recording. What will equally put you over the edge is the image playback. You cannot review still images and video images at the same push of the playback button. Once you shoot a video (accidentally) you must jump through hoops in the menu to find your still images. Now I just fire off a random shot to get to still image playback. These two issues may not seem like a big deal, but I guarantee you after a day or two of shooting with this camera you will feel some frustration. My final gripe is with Sony customer service. I'm betting that most of the people have never held a camera. Their replies are scripted and trying to explain how this camera could be so great with just a couple of firmware fixes gets you nowhere. SONY!! UPDATE THE FIRMWARE!!!

Best SLR type camera I've owned
5 Star Review By Pixel on Sony - Official Store - May 26, 2012

Placed my pre-order hoping to receive the NEX-7 before going to Europe. Arrived just in time so I left all other cameras behind. Played with many of the settings and went between full Auto and other modes with varying ISO settings. Found pictures had very sharp definition and lack of grain up to ISO setting of 1600 with grain increasingly creeping in above that. But with the standard 18-55mm lens the higher ISO shots still gave usable low light shots. Needs menu setting to turn off Video button when not using video features. Thumb position while convenient for video shooting is right where camera is gripped and subject to inadvertent bumping. I've owned many Minolta and Sony cameras and this is by far the best ever. Having Photo and video in one units sure makes traveling lighter. Video quality very impressive.

This is truly a tecnological master piece. The sensor is outstanding and the lenses when using multi-focus feature produces remarkable image quality. Color quality is very accurate and the auto HDR produces accurate photos. I also use nikon and hasselblad lenses with a purchased adapter in manual focus mode for special shooting. A true wonder. 24x36 poster ...no problem ....outtanding resolution. Video is superb

4 Star Review By CLJ49 on Sony - Official Store - May 23, 2012

Everything about the camera works well altho using the controls does take some learning. The camera is a pleasure to use and the lenses have not disappointed. So much better than traveling with my heavy DSLR. Only the OLED is disappointing--useless in bright sun and is always darker than what you are looking at.

Excellent Camera
5 Star Review By Williamson on Sony - Official Store - May 15, 2012

I never thought that dSLR quality pictures can be attained in such a small form factor. The view finder, although it can get grainy in low light shots, allows you to preview your shot before taking the actual picture. The tri-navi dials allows you to adjust your settings easily and intuitively. On top of the excellent pictures, this camera takes amazing HD video. The camera also has an amazing feature set including HDR, sweep panorama, twilight mode, etc... I definitely recommend this camera if you want an enthusiast quality camera without the bulk of a dSLR.

Great Little Camera
5 Star Review By KCbob on Sony - Official Store - May 4, 2012

Well built camera with good feel in the hand. The EVF is quite good even if no one will mistake it for an optical finder. The camera is also quick responding and I find the LAEA2 adapter/NEX7 combination to work very well. Excellent images. I find having a flash shoe a great benefit. This camera is just fun to use. Good looking camera, too. Control layout is nice also (except movie button) Menus are a bit scattered and I would like to see a way to show depth-of-field on the LCD. I would also like to have an interval timer (just software, should not be difficult). When using features that require jpg only (I use RAW + jpg), the camera should just tell you only a jpg will be stored and go ahead into the feature and return to the previous state when done, not require me to manually change it.

Amazing
5 Star Review By Nicosocha on Sony - Official Store - Apr 28, 2012

I read many Reviews of this camera and compared it also to the D7000 from Nikon. But then i was in a local shop and held the D7000 in my hand and it was so big and massive. After that i choose the NEX-7 and i think that was the right decision. So much Megapixels with an APS-C Sensor? Yes the camera earned very good results at DxOMark, the sensor in it is absolutely awesome. A new generation of quality i think. Notice in the Nikon D7000 is a Sony sensor in it, too but only with 16MPixel and i think its an older generation but i'm not shure.

mighty Nex7
5 Star Review By hookah66 on Sony - Official Store - Apr 25, 2012

Very pleasantly surprised on the ability of this little but mighty camera in taking high quality low light scenes. The interface is very easy to use, although there are too many redundancy in features. The most frustrating part is the waiting time to get the only one E-mount lens by Carl Zeiss. The strength of Nex7 is to use third party lenses, serious lenses i.e. Sumicron, Elmarit, Distagon, Planar, etc ... but there is very little discussion on the availability of conversion adapters. There is more on the blog than on the Sony webpages.

AF can't keep up with moving kids
3 Star Review By Borris on Sony - Official Store - Apr 23, 2012

I was looking for a camera that can: - do quality photos and videos, - indoors, kids playing, no flash - in a package smaller then DLSR Sadly, it seems that such camera still does not exist. The NEX7 is pretty good at taking still pictures. The ISO 1600 is quite good, but it starts loosing too much details at ISO 3200. For still pictures AF in low light is adequate, but not spectacular. It has just enough delay to make taking pictues of moving kids at f2.8 or below a hit-or-miss proposition. Video was a disappontment. As long as subjects remain within original DOF everything is great, really nice HD video. But AF absolutely can't keep up with moving kids indoors. AF is way too slow at adjusting. Lens selection is simply not there. I ended up with 3 lenses none of which was really what I was looking for. I really wanted something like 18-50 f2.8 and the only way to get it would be by getting 400 CAD adapter and half a kilo alpha lens. Either way, having to swap between 3 differ ent lenses or having to use an adapter and a heavy alpha lens totally defeats size benefits from the NEX system. Overall: + very good still pictures up to ISO 1600 + very good video as long as AF does not have to work during the shot ? egronomics - good, but not as easy to handle as DSLR. - AF can't keep up with moving kids in low light conditions - Lens selection will force many users into using SLR lenses with adapters, eliminating NEX size benefits

Not as good as I had hoped that it would be
4 Star Review By sparky on Sony - Official Store - Apr 15, 2012

I had a Nex-5N which had a software problem and took some good/some bad pictures. I waited for a long time for the Nex-7 to become available and I'm a little disappointed. The adjustments are somewhat difficult to find because of the menus and it doesn't take the quality of pictures that I had hoped for. The camera is very solid, very light (given it's capabilities) and very easy to hold. The flash is difficult to adjust for exposure...again, because of the menus. I think I will keep this camera but I wish I had tried a digital slr before I had purchased this one. Outdoor photos are good to very good. Indoor photos are unpredictable but mostly good except when using the external flash. The external flash (HVL-F20AM) tends to either cause a photo that is too light or too dark. The internal flash works will but has (obvious) distance limitations. The lens (Sony, not Zeiss) is very good to excellent.

Amazing Images/Camera BUT...
4 Star Review By CM98 on Sony - Official Store - Apr 9, 2012

After 2 weeks of toying with cam at home (interior/exterior/HVL43/PocketWizardStrobe), took on train trip across U.S. and then a few days in San Fran. Really got to carry it around and use in different situations and light conditions. Like all cameras, you have to find it's 'sweet spots'... Anyhow, can't imagine anyone complaining about image quality. Tri Nav: So easy to adjust your image and see what you're going to get without taking eye off shot... It's luxurious. At the same time, sometimes I didn't have time to frame, etc...just wanted reflex shot... I found it easy to slide across tri-nav wheels and over/under exps...but I chalk that up to cam being truly an instrument and not a toy. Vid REC button - When pulling up cam to shoot on about a dozen occasions during trip, I would mistakenly hit the vid record button (and of course it immediately starts recording which is good...just that's not what I wanted at that time. Still beginner with cam but still found this annoying because the switch back to photo mode is not immediate...vid cam has to stop recording and shut down (maybe only a second or two) but for snapshots it makes for a useless interruption and thus missed genuine shots. NO GPS: Hey Sony! PLEASE include this on NEX-9! NO Shutter Timer: Would be nice to play with time elapse but doesn't exist on this. NO PC Sync: If you want to use with Pocket Wizard, you'll have to buy hot shoe adapter. Good news is, they're cheap...I think I got mine for $15. Bad news, you lose TTL. HOWEVER, I did see a video online that showed NEX7 being used with PW-like device with TTL appearing to work but alas could not find the product... OVERALL: Would I trade it in? NO WAY! This Cam Rocks!

Groundbreaking!
5 Star Review By Nchitturi on Sony - Official Store - Apr 3, 2012

I think this kind of camera will usher in a revolution. One buys a DSLR for the quality and size of the sensor and the through-the-lens eye-level viewfinder, and accepts its significant weight and bulk due to the big mirror box and the big lens needed for the long flange-to-sensor distance, especially with full-frame cameras. Ordinary non-SLR digicams, even the high-end ones, didn't offer TTL composition except awkwardly on the LCD monitor, and the only eye-level finders left are non-TTL. But enter the NEX-7! With the progress that's been made in image quality obtained from midsize sensors, and in the image quality of OLED displays for viewing the scene straight off the sensor, we have everything: compactness and small lenses due to elimination of the mirror; TTL composition; an eye-level, in-camera viewfinder with (acceptably) near-optical quality; and image quality that rivals that of the first generation of full-frame digital cameras. And almost-pocketability. The performance of this camera is wonderful, as shown in the accompanying image and a comparison of identical compositions from my NEX-7 and one of my top-quality full-frame 35mm digital cameras. This website presents it too small to be helpful, but these are crops of about 1/3 the width and 1/2 the height of the original images. The full frames viewed at 20 x 30-inch size are exquisitely sharp and detailed. But advantage actually goes to the pixel-rich NEX-7! I was going to take one of the full-frame 35s on an upcoming trip to France, along with a big zoom or trio of prime lenses, as well as a Sony camcorder, but now all I'll need is my NEX-7. (But I sure would like a super-compact muffin everyday lens like Panasonic's 20mm prime or their 14-42mm compact zoom for true pocketability.)

Fine Camera
4 Star Review By Decidocisum on Sony - Official Store - Apr 1, 2012

I find the image quality very good. It in fact it is very close to as good as my Canon 5D-MarkII.. The only difference is in low light performance. My main complaint with Sony is their proprietary flash system which makes the camera incompatible with a lot a flash equipment. Their wireless flash dose not work with the built in flash. Big disappointment.

This camera is awesome, at first I was doubtful selling my Nikon D90 but now that I have been shooting with it I have no regrets. It has hardly any shutter lag and the pictures I have taken are sharp with a lot of detail(although this will depend on your lens). This camera does everything and even outperforms most if not all entry level DSLR's. The only downside is that it does not have a big choice in lenses specifically made for the NEX, although you can buy an adaptor so you can use your lenses that you currently own but you would have to use them manually. I am sure Sony will be rolling out more lenses for the NEX . I will soon be going on vacation so i cannot wait to take it with me.

good but...
4 Star Review By roninseattle on Adorama - Mar 30, 2012

bought this to replace my Fuji X100. While I've only had it a week I can say it seems very well made, nice compact body, nice viewfinder, responds nicely. My two bigest compaints to date are the confusing menus, buttons and knobs, and poor lens choices.

Great Camera
5 Star Review By Jeffy on Sony - Official Store - Mar 28, 2012

Just got mine today. Wasn't even expecting it because I was rescheduled to get it on the 15th of April. Luckily I got mine. I'm just a beginner. I own the Nex 5 not 5n and just wanted to upgrade because I'm starting to like photography and wanted to learn manual controls. Can't wait to use it for my son and wife birthday party this weekend. Just have to learn how to use the manual first.

Awesome camera
5 Star Review By Edge540 on Sony - Official Store - Mar 24, 2012

I was a DSLR user (Canon 20D with 24-70 L and 70-300 DO lenses) and was tired of lugging around this setup. I like to hike and have spent a lot so I can bring my camera with me (different camera vests). I thought I was downgrading by moving to the NEX-7. I was wrong! Quality is as good or even better that the Canon. As I mentioned, NEX-7 has a fairly steep learning curve but that's because it has so many customizable features. BUt as I use it, I continue to change the setup to what is comfortable for me. I really like this camera.

This is the camera I've been yearning for
5 Star Review By rdmwpg on Sony - Official Store - Mar 24, 2012

I have wanted this camera for about ten years, and now, I finally have it (unlike the majority of these so-called reviewers, only 4 of which have actually used the camera). It is almost perfect. The size and weight is great (the NEX 3 & 5 were almost too small) and even some larger alpha zoom lenses with the adapter don't seem overly cumbersome as they did on my NEX 5. The large hand grip gives the camera a great feel. There is practically no shutter lag when you use the electronic first curtain. It has almost every feature you could wish for (the only feature I wish they would add is an intervalometer so we could do time lapse video). The only weak points I have found so far in the hardware are the video button location (too easy to accidentally press it) and the diopter adjustment (impossible to adjust with the viewfinder eyecup attached). The menu structure is the cameras weakest point, although with all the buttons and dials you won't have to go into it quite as much as with the NEX 3 or 5 once you have it set up to your liking. Why Sony won't let us play videos and photos consecutively is a mystery to me. Hopefully these software issues can be tweaked with a firmware update. I cannot fathom what they or anyone else could do to top this one.

Excellent but one very large problem . . .
3 Star Review By Cirrus410 on Sony - Official Store - Mar 21, 2012

This wonderful camera is seriously handicapped by the easy accidental activation of video mode. The location of the video button makes it very difficult to pick up the camera (off a table or from around your neck to bring it to your eye) or just handle it without activating video mode. This locks up the entire camera, which cannot be used for stills until the video button is pressed again, the video cancels (which takes a second or so) followed by releasing the shutter. Sony could easily correct this with a firmware update that allows for the option of disabling the button. I think this should be an emergency priority software update. In the two months I have been using a pair of 7s, I have had *hundreds* of accidental activations of video. I know two other photographers who have stopped using the camera because of this easily remedied problem. I would easily give this camera five stars with this single problem corrected.

Excellent camera but not perfect
4 Star Review By RetiredRR on Sony - Official Store - Mar 14, 2012

I was looking at mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras as a retirement present. Narrowed it down to a Lumix Micro 4/3s and the Sony NEX-7. The Nex-7 won out on image quality and some of the features. Hated the wait on delivery but it has been worth it. I haven't tested everything yet but all my pictures have been excellent. I tried the Nex-3 and Nex-5 in the store but found the smaller size to be uncomfortable in my hands. I also didn't like the lack of a built-in viewfinder and flash. The Nex-7 corrected those shortcomings. The kit lens doesn't feel as smooth as I would expect. I also ordered a 55-200 zoom but it's back ordered with no ship date. Looking for some more lens selections. The Nex-7 replaces a Canon S5 that has served me well. I was surprised that the Nex-7 was an ounce lighter than the S5. Controls take some getting used to. Plan to spend a lot of time working through the manual and getting used what all the dials do. Definitely not a point and shoot but I wasn't looking for one. Took some pictures with the HDR setting and thought the processing time was excessive. Took 10 seconds or more to process the image and be ready for the next shot. Results were fantastic but didn't like the wait.

Just Got My Love Today !
5 Star Review By CameraLover on Sony - Official Store - Mar 13, 2012

Waited SIX MONTHS to get this camera, which was a birthday present back in NOVEMBER and it finally came today. I would say it's worth the wait, I'll review again once I've had it over the next few weeks.

It Was Worth The Wait!!!
5 Star Review By JoanLS on Sony - Official Store - Mar 9, 2012

At my advanced age, it probably doesn't make sense to buy yet another camera since I've owned many since the original little Kodak box camera. But I could not resist and now I have to say this is the very best camera I have ever owned. I doubt I will ever use all the bells and whistles of what it can do - since on auto it is great - but I love the screen and especially the viewfinder which so many cameras no longer have. It takes a great still photo and also videos. I don't need my (Sony) video camera any longer. I had no problem with the packaging - in fact, I thought it was well done. The size of the camera is great and, overall, I am very happy with it. Thank you, Sony!

black dust in packing
1 Star Review By RJDUBB on Sony - Official Store - Mar 4, 2012

The camera is covered in black dust when you receive it because of the packaging it comes in. I would not recommend this product. It will get on your sensor if you don't blow it all off first ... do not buy

5 Star Review By HenryV on Sony - Official Store - Feb 13, 2012

I first learn about NEX-7 from Popular Photography magazine and end up surveying for more info. It seems like a neat camera and thought it'd be the perfect travel mate for me. I called in and ask if it'd reach me before my trip abroad. The gentleman on the other side (Sony) thinks it's possible. Crossing my fingers i just ordered it. I hope and pray i could get it before March 15, 2012.

5 Star Review By Zelenski on Sony - Official Store - Jan 30, 2012

Currently have Sony DSC-W200 Super Steady Shot 12.1 mp. Nice pictures, except for the low light ones. Never had DSLR in my life, however, money is not an issue, but it is very important for me to have a hand-sized camera with picture/size/movie/quiality camera. Good luck to new owners of Nex-7 with their purchase!

NEX-7
5 Star Review By harbinger808 on Sony - Official Store - Jan 27, 2012

I've been the proud owner of a NEX-7 for a month now and I'm thoroughly happy with my purchase. The camera is a huge step over my old Sony point and shoots, it allows me to bring my level of photography another step up. This camera will definitely "grow" with me as my skill level develops. The weight and portability of the NEX-7 is simply amazing. I can bring it everywhere, unlike my friends "canon" sized DSLRs :) I have the 18-55mm kit lens and it works just fine for my day to day needs. When I need something a bit more, I just add a Novoflex adapter and Zeiss ZM 50mm lenses for that extra something special! Next up is a Zeiss ZM 15 and 35mm. If you have the means to get this camera, you won't be disappointed if you're coming from the point and shoot world.

one star for the complainers re delivery
5 Star Review By steffie on Sony - Official Store - Jan 14, 2012

i'm researching a camera in this class and see an average 3 1/2 star review. what's bringing rating down ?. People complaining about THE AVAILABLILITY OF THIS CAMERA and not the quality and functionality of the camera itself. what has this got to do with rating the CAMERA ??? grow up people.. stay focused... anyway.. only thing i see as an issue (besides lens size) if hdr mode only .7 either way. hdr uses at least +=1 exposoure compensation.

5 Star Review By gregsoc on Sony - Official Store - Jan 4, 2012

I've never read so many negative reviews by people who know next to nothing about this product. At least I've owned and used a Sony camera (A900) for a few years and can attest to the capability of at least one of their products. This is a great new product. It's got the competition scrambling to develop a similar product and to incorporate some of these innovations into their own mainstream products. Regardless of what brand you buy, you'll ultimately benefit from the competition this product engenders. So relax with the one star reviews and step back and appreciate the photographic step forward this product represents. Peace. Greg

Camera Of The Year (I can't wait)
5 Star Review By Cr3ative on Sony - Official Store - Jan 2, 2012

I had a chance to view the Nex 7 because one of my friends just received his pre-order. Wow, I have a Nex 5 and was about to buy a Nex 5n but I am going to wait and get the Nex 7 after seeing the major differences between the two. I was completely bown away by the OLED viewfinder. lt is clear, just like looking through my Canon 50D viewfinder. The image quality that the Nex 7 produces is amazing, and color reproduction is top notch. The Nex 7 is not a 3/4ths micro toy camera like the competition, this is the first pro level ILC. The Nex 7 is the beginning to the end of traditional DSLRs and issues in the new era of ILC dominance in the professional market. Five years from now everyone will own some type of ILC. Good luck Nikon with your V1 competing with this godlike camera. Canon hasn't even placed a foot in the ILC market because they know that a good ILC will destroy their current line of DSLRs. I know that the Nex 7 is exactly the camera that Canon was fearing. I can't wait until April.

Camera seems incredible
5 Star Review By Ken603 on Sony - Official Store - Dec 15, 2011

Its a shame that so many negative reviews are bases on the release days. Based on any credible review I have seen this is an magnificent peice of equipment, worth the wait. The reviews from people who dont understand the devastation of flooding are completely worthless and should be deleted. Sony deserves a lot of praise.

5 Star Review By seriously on Sony - Official Store - Dec 7, 2011

this looks to be a great camera. ive been watching reviews on it all day and my only regret is that i didnt know about this before i purchased my nex 5. im new to photography and this is going to be a great step up from my nex 5, especially with all the new features. im glad yall listened to your consumers and made corrections on your product. for example, i really liked the addition of the tri navi function and the hot shoe. this camera is not quite at the professional level, although its a great start, its definitely out of the beginner stage. once again im saving my pennies to get the nex 7 once it comes out. dropping the price on some of the accessories wouldnt be a bad idea either but other then that great job on making your mark in the photography market.

Release Price $1399.00? Really SONY?
3 Star Review By Jay514 on Sony - Official Store - Nov 29, 2011

I was hoping to buy this model to complment my HX9V, but it still is not released. Expected release price on this page says $1399.00 USD. As long as we "the Consumers' have waited sony should reconsider lowering the price below $1000.00 USD. I also hope they plan to only release this camera with the most updated software/firmware. It seems,By the time sony releases this camera, it will be time for a newer model. Therefore I am unwilling too pay top dollar for outdated equipment, but will consider a lower price. Please consider a lower price & or package deal @ a lower price, Thanks,Jay

But how about full frame version?
5 Star Review By lightwave on Sony - Official Store - Nov 19, 2011

One of the appeals of the NEX series is the ability to use non-Sony lenses through adapters. There are millions of older 35mm lenses out there. I use my NEX-5 with my collection of old M42 lenses. But to take full advantage we need a camera like NEX with FULL frame, not half frame sensor. Since Sony makes a full frame sensor, why not offer it? You would sell a million of these ..

Five stars plus, from reviews posted by those testing this model. To all giving one, two or three stars based on Mother Nature - give us a break. A camera review is based on performance & quality not on closing production due to events from Mother Nature. Last, "call" Sony and you will get news re expected delivery, if Sony knows. Add your email for info on the NEX 7. Sincerely, Richard O.

Wow, really wondering about the delay complaints. Yes, it's inconvenient that there is a delay but it seems as if the whole of Thailand is flooded, nearly every industrial manufacturer that relies on electronic components is having difficulty. Give it a rest and let these companies work through an extraordinarily difficult situation. I placed my order in October based on early reviews (hence the 5 stars) -- I'm still looking forward to using this as my secondary camera.

As sony will be my first semi-pro camera, I would wait for it to be release... but the un-confirm release date of this camera is forcing me to decide other brand of camera such as Nikon DSLR or Canon... If possible, please confirm the exact release date of the camera... =( Thank You.

The NEX system could be a contender, but...
3 Star Review By Canandaigua on Sony - Official Store - Sep 24, 2011

The NEX-7 looks like it could be the small system camera to replace SLRs for serious advanced amateurs and and semi-pro photographers. These "semi-pro" photographers are the ones that purchase huge quantities of pro and semi-pro Canon/Nikon SLRs based on 2 criteria: (1) highest possible IQ, and (2) complete system of "accessories". It may well be that the NEX-7 will have the required IQ (we'll see). Certainly, the fact that this small-bodied camera has at least an APS-C sensor is at least one minimum requirement for a semi-pro camera, as it is nearly impossible to get any depth of focus restriction with a sensor smaller than APS-C. The worry I have as a semi-pro photographer, is whether or not the NEX-7 will ever have a "system" to support the camera body. Sony's own website lists lenses for the NEX-7 under the "accessories" tab ("lenses" = "accessories", really?). Included intermixed on this page are camera bags, SD cards, etc, in addition to only two lenses. Come on Sony! Apertures of F3.5-5.6 in your zooms, and even only F2.8 in the pancake lens is lame. I can not see semi-pro photographers interested in a NEX camera body without F2.8 zooms and some fast primes. My position is to wait 2 to 5 years to see what develops in the Sony NEX "System".

1:1 square image format wanted

I've been using an NEX 5 which is fantastic but really miss the 1:1 square image format, which I like a lot. With the addition of the EVF, the NEX 7 looks like it'd be nice to use but again, no 1:1 image format. Come on Sony, why not add it - like all other mirrorless cameras.

A real Move Up- Except
3 Star Review By NExime on Sony - Official Store - Aug 31, 2011

The Nex 5 was the best camera I ever owned. It replaced both a DSLR and a point and shoot. The Nex 5 was going to replace a larger DSLR we were using for a documentary - but the sound options on the Nex 7 appear to be to limited and limiting. The other camera has much more in lens options as well, at a better price. Way better but not worth almost double the price of a Nex5
