DCRP Review: Sony Alpha NEX-5N
4 Star Review DCResource - Jan 27, 2012

All things considered, the Sony Alpha NEX-5N is a very good interchangeable lens camera -- as long as you can tolerate its menu-driven user interface. If you find that you can live with its interface, then you'll find a camera that's capable of taking excellent photos and videos, with the added bonus of the HDR and Anti Motion Blur features, for taking great photos in challenging lighting conditions. Even with its quirks, the NEX-5N does the fundamentals very well, which is why it earns my recommendation.

Sony Alpha NEX-5N Review
5 Star Review Imaging Resource - Dec 31, 1969

Sony made quite a splash with its aggressively-styled NEX-5 system camera back in mid-2010, and while the succeeding Sony NEX-5N digital camera is no longer the company's flagship system camera, it builds upon its predecessor with quite a selection of upgrades and new features. There's a new image sensor and processor that bring a wider sensitivity range and support for an electronic first-curtain shutter, gifting the NEX-5N with startlingly good shutter lag and burst-shooting performance. Sony has also revisited its accessory terminal design to add support for a new high-res electronic viewfinder, added a touch-screen interface that makes AF-point selection a breeze, and brought videographers fully manual exposure control. Is it time for first-gen NEX owners to consider an upgrade? Read our Sony NEX-5N review, and find out.

4.5 Star Review cameralabs.com - Dec 12, 2011

Like the original NEX-5, the new model boasts a 3in tilting screen, HD video and a raft of clever modes, but the 5N now makes the screen touch-sensitive, upgrades the movie quality and burst shooting, while offering greater customisation and the chance to fit an optional electronic viewfinder. It's highly compelling, but how does it compare to the Olympus E-P3 and Panasonic GX1? Find out in my Sony NEX 5N review!

4.5 Star Review photographyblog.com - Oct 31, 2011

The NEX-5N is the fourth compact system camera from Sony, featuring a significant number of improvements to the previous NEX-5 model. With a 16 megapixel APS HD CMOS sensor, 1080p HD movies, high-res 3 inch tilting screen and external flash, the NEX-5N also adds a touchscreen user interface, faster auto-focus and reduced shutter-lag. Sony Alpha NEX-5N (body only, Black)
3.5 Star Review cnet.com - Sep 15, 2011

THE GOOD: A small-bodied interchangeable-lens model with excellent video, the Sony Alpha NEX-5N also offers some nice features, including a tilting LCD, EVF port, and a hybrid touch-screen/traditional interface. THE BAD: The user interface wont be to everyones taste, and the body feels almost too small for the typical E-mount zoom lenses. THE BOTTOM LINE: An especially good option for people who want a relatively inexpensive ILC for shooting video, the Sony Alpha NEX-5Ns photo qualitys about the same as its cheaper siblings.

Brings back old times
5 Star Review By Potography4Life on Sony - Official Store - Aug 4, 2012

Now, here is a camera body that gives you everything you can wish for: manual, intelligent auto, special scenes, shutter or aperture priority, low light handheld...the list goes on and on. Color fidelity, rich black and white fotography, no shutter lag, 10 fps shot speed, optional first class view finder. And all of this in a small body that one can pocket if one wishes to do so. The sensor is sensational with an optimum number of pixels for its 4/3 size. I bought several lenses and am happy with everything I have purchased as they all play nicely together including a manual Leica lens. My favorite general purpose lens is the 18-55 mm (3.5-5.6) zoom lens and the featured images were taken with this lens. The NEX 5N makes me feel like having finally found a digital body/camera that can handle situations like my good old fashioned analog cameras albeit only after one puts a bit of time into studying the versatile but complex interface. Once one masters the 5N, the creative possibilities are sheer boundless.

The high ISO performance is outstanding, especially in this price range. The 10 eps is almost comical it's so fast and it works flawlessly... one RAW/on Jpeg at 10 eps! Fastest shooting camera I've ever had! I had the 3c version but the 5n is so much bett

Outstanding stills - Video needs some work
4 Star Review By AccessGuy on Sony - Official Store - Feb 1, 2012

Basically I rate this 5 stars for stills, including low-light and 3 stars for video in low light. The auto-ISO works great and makes possible some scenes that would be difficult to impossible with other rigs. I recommend turning OFF AF in low-light, particularly for video, as the incessant focus hunting ruins the video and overheats the camera, causing it to shut down with exended shoots. If you use MF, it gets bumped up to a 4. I still don't like the fact that you have to zoom manually and that audio, even with the external mic attachment, sometimes distorts at higher sound levels. Otherwise it is a great video camera as well. Three stars for video for now.

Fantastic!!!
5 Star Review By rj1031 on Sony - Official Store - Jan 23, 2012

I am a Canon shooter for the past 7 years or so. I've been using the Canon 5D, 5D MKII and 1D MKIV for my work and sometimes for leisure. I was so skeptic about the NEX series on how it will revolutionized the DSLR market when it came out. A Sony!?!?! Well, after like a year or so, I've been hearing great things and read positive reviews about it but with my prideful self, I am still doubting all the positive claims. Christmas came and my wife surprised my with the NEX-5n and the 16mm f/2.8...in all honesty, I wasn't happy...until I started playing with it :). First thing I did was to test at low light/high ISO levels and I was floored on how well controlled the noise level were and the quality images were WOW! This little thing intimidates my Canon 1D MKIV in low light performance. The other special features were awesome as well. For video, it's fantastic! Finally, my neck and shoulders will get a break from carrying heavy DSLRs. As I write this review, I have not touched my Canons. I love this thing!!! Thanks Sony for making my life a whole lot easier.

First impressions count...
5 Star Review By DesertRat on Sony - Official Store - Jan 21, 2012

After just a few days with my NEX-5N I'm full of enthusiasm for the camera and have just a couple observations... First and foremost, image quality is amazing. The sensor is beyond anything I've used before. And the JPEG processing engine generates amazing out-of-camera images that need little or no post-processing other than cropping. Truly sets the standard for APS-C. And the features are almost too good to be true. Things like Panorama Sweep and Hand-Held Twilight just don't seem possible in such a small camera. I can't help but think "Why didn't anyone think of this before?" Takes awhile to really understand the power available and I'm just starting to learn. Bundled camera kits weren't readily available when I bought my NEX-5N. So I separately bought the 18-200mm NEX lens. I'm very happy with the combination. 11X zoom makes you feel like you have the convenience of a P&S camera but with more of a DSLR feel. The lens is heavier than the camera body and requires a different approach to carrying and use... I need to carry the camera by the lens vs. carrying by the body as the latter causes me to depress buttons and enter the menu system inadvertently. It isn't 2nd nature yet, but I'll get there. As I write this NEX lenses are mostly unavailable either from the Christmas rush, not yet available from production, or the continuing disruption from the 2011 Thailand flood. The planned range of lenses is pretty limited and I can only hope that it will grow. In the meantime the SEL18200 fills a number of gaps in the line-up except macro imaging. A few observations about using the camera. - Auto focus in low-light isn't particularly easy. The camera often hunts for focus or gives up altogether. AF Assist can exacerbate the problem. If the camera fails to focus, you have to go into the menu to turn on manual focus. This is not to say you can't use the camera in low light, it's just that you can't expect fast, accurate AF to help. A firmware mod to automatically enable MF when the AF fails would help immensely! I'm guessing this is a limitation of the Contrast Detect technology used for auto focus. - Like most of the current range of non-DSLR cameras, you either have to use the LCD screen exclusively for composition & focusing or buy an optional EVF. The NEX-7 offers built-in EVF, but for -5N owners you need to buy the pricey optional accessory which tends to snag things (camera bag, clothing, straps, etc.). I don't have one yet because, like many of the NEX accessories, there's no stock available. - The LCD screen washes out in bright sunlight. Can't expect anything else for this type display. An oddity of the NEX-5N camera is that the screen can sometimes be more useable in direct sunlight than if you step into the shadows and shoot toward the sunlight. Apparently it has to do with the built-in sensors that control screen brightness automatically by measuring how much light strikes the screen. (Brightness is separately adjustable.) - There are no Custom modes available. Similar cameras I'm familiar with allow the user to save camera settings they find useful for special conditions or subjects. The NEX-5N owner has to drill down thru the menu and reset for each of these situations. Apparently Sony designers don't see that as a problem, but maybe with enough feedback from users they'll make allowance for those of us that like the Custom approach. It is, after all, a firmware change and not a hardware mod. All-in-all I'm very pleased with the camera. It creates great images and has given me better photos without post-processing than any of my other cameras. I just need to be aware of a few characteristics and find a way to deal with them. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the camera for anyone with enough experience to know how to deal with these 'features'.

5 Star Review By 639me on Sony - Official Store - Nov 4, 2011

i got my nex-5 for about a year now, along with a 16mm, fisheye adapter, and an 18-55mm. the images are absolutely stunning, - everyone who sees them are impressed with the low noise levels, and overall picture quality. also the firmware update that came quite early made up for some extra shortcuts, which is nice! the only thing i wish for would be that the hdmi out signal could be a clean image without any exposure info. that would open up for recording uncompressed video directly to a computer. i know this might be of little general usage, but maybe some people would wish for this for tethering as well! so keep up the work with this line of cameras, and keep bringing these small updates that prove we have made a real good choise!
