DCRP Review: Nikon D5100
4 Star Review DCResource - May 31, 2011

The Nikon D5100 is a very nice "premium" entry-level D-SLR, and offers some genuinely useful new features compared to its predecessor (the D5000). Some of the highlights are very good photo quality (with low noise until the very highest sensitivities), solid build quality, a rotating LCD that now flips to the side (instead of down), plenty of manual controls, a fun new Effects mode, and Full HD movie recording. Downsides are few, and include soft photos at default settings, sluggish contrast detect AF in live view, a lack of manual controls in movie mode, and a few misplaced buttons. And, like the D5000, the D5100 only supports autofocus on newer Nikkor lenses.

Nikon D5100 Review
5 Star Review Imaging Resource - Dec 31, 1969

Back in 2009, we reviewed Nikon's D5000, the company's first SLR to include an articulated LCD display, and while we loved its image quality and feature set, the bottom-mounted tilt/swivel mechanism seemed like something of a missed opportunity. The followup Nikon D5100 switches to a more versatile side-mounted mechanism useful not only for framing high or low shots, but also for self-portraits--something of an important use case for a consumer camera. Nikon has also updated the D5100's imaging pipeline, which is now based around the same 16.2 megapixel image sensor and processing algorithms used in the popular D7000 prosumer SLR, bringing similar image quality to a much more affordable camera. The D5100 also brings in-camera HDR imaging to a Nikon SLR for the first time, and expands upon Nikon's selection of in-camera filter effects. Of these, perhaps the most interesting is a Night Vision mode that allows sensitivity to a maximum of ISO 102,400 equivalent, so long as you're willing to forgo shooting in color. Otherwise, the D5100 provides ISO sensitivities to 25,600 equivalent. Other notable features include a maximum shutter speed of 1/4,000 second, a rated shutter life of 100,000 cycles, Nikon's 3D Color Matrix Metering and 11-point Multi-CAM 1000 autofocus sensors, and Full HD (1,080p) movie capture capability. 3.5 Star Review cnet.com - Apr 8, 2011

THE GOOD: Excellent photo quality with a good noise profile, a streamlined shooting design for both photo and video, and a broad, practical feature set contribute to the Nikon D5100s strengths. THE BAD: While its fast, some aspects of the D5100s performance still lag behind its class. THE BOTTOM LINE: Though it doesnt rank first based on any individual aspect of the camera, the Nikon D5100 delivers a solid combination of image quality, performance, features, and design that puts it out in front if youre looking for a well-rounded option under $1,000.

Nikon D5100 DSLR
3 Star Review productwiki.com - Apr 11, 2011

The Nikon D5100 digital SLR camera is a newer version of the Nikon D5000 that provides an updated 16.2 megapixel DX format CMOS sensor. With an ISO range of 100-6400 and an EXPEED 2 image processing engine, this camera is able to capture clear photographs, even in low light. With updated recording from the D5000 models HD 1280x720p video feature, this camera offers HD 1920x1080p, for higher quality movies. Equipped with a High Dynamic Range, in pictures encompassing extreme contrasts, it combines two exposures to offer cleaner and crisper photographs. Also, the swivel vari-angle LCD monitor, has been enlarged from 2.7 on the D5000 model to 3 inches, and an extra side hinge has been added to increase the flexibility range, allowing pictures to be taken from more angles. Finally, offering a new effects mode, pictures can be taken with a variety of creative looks, including selective color, night vision, miniature, ... PROS: (1) includes the same high quality 14-bit 16.2MP sensor found in the much more expensive D7000 (2) " completely articulating display with a high 921k dot resolution (the same as the D7000, higher than the D5000) (3) records video in full 1080/30p/24p, 720/30p/25p/24p with microphone input - improved over the D3100 (no mic input, 1080p/30 option) (4) improved battery life over the D5000 - rated for 660 shots vs 510 shots (5) records to easy to find, affordable and capacious SD/SDHC/SDXC flash memory ... CONS: (1) shares the same 11-point AF, shutter speed, and metering system as the D3100/D90 - it cant be exactly the same as the D7000! (2) dim pentamirror based optical viewfinder - the same as the D3100, much more annoying to use than the brighter one found on the D7000/D90 (3) lacks the dual control wheels of the D7000/D90

Refurbished, I'd do it again
5 Star Review By Jim on Adorama - May 28, 2013

Purchased refurbished, body only. Last year's model, replaced by the D5200, came with an excellent price. Replaces my D40. I am very pleased with the feature set, performance, quality of pictures, and so on. The camera itself looks new. My familiarity with the D40 made getting used to this camera very straightforward. Note that the resolution of the D5200 is not significant to me, it's only an improvement of 20% in linear density. I'd need to see a 64 Megapixel camera before I'd get very interested, and only because I am interested in wildlife photography. I purchased the VIP program to go with this, to get the extra 1 year warranty from Adorama - Nikon refurbished cameras come with a 90 day warranty.

4 Star Review By Ouranos on Adorama - May 14, 2013

For several months I have been looking to upgrade from my Nikon D40. The D40 has served me very well, but, there were some capabilities I wanted that it did not have. The model I chose as an upgrade was the D5100 due to two things: the sensor and the live-view. Both have proven to be more than I had hoped for. And, the interaction with Adorama was excellent. I was a bit leery of purchasing refurbished. But, the camera has operated flawlessly.

5 Star Review By Hudsonian on Adorama - May 14, 2013

I upgraded my D5000 to the D5100. It's a better camera for less $$. The downside is that the plastic body will not take a cotton to impact (RIP D5000). But be gentle with the D5100 and it will serve you well. I use the D5100 with a Nikkor 18-200mm zoom and it makes professional quality photos.

Great deal
5 Star Review By merrill on Adorama - May 7, 2013

I picked the D5100 as an upgrade from my old D40, and it is spectacular in comparison. The refurbished model seems good as new (although mine did have about 1900 shutter actuations -- in the long run, that's hardly anything). The image quality is superb. I've been taking photos of birds, flowers and pets, mostly, using a Nikon 35mm G 1.8 and the 70-300mm VR zoom, and I'm delighted with how my shots have turned out. I haven't shot much video yet, but I'm glad it has a separate mic input. I wasn't sure about the tilt screen, but I find I'm using it more than I thought I would for still photos. I'm also more excited about the many adjustable controls than I thought I would be. I learned photography years ago on manual film cameras and in the darkroom, and this camera makes me feel like I've gone back to those exciting days of learning, somehow. If you're debating about this refurbished body, stop. Just get it, if you can. Right now, it's an incredible deal. Love this camera.

Excellent beginner DSLR, better than exp
4 Star Review By Mikiro on Adorama - May 7, 2013

I purchased this camera to take pictures of my daughter & pictures at a upcoming wedding. Simply taking pictures on auto is easy & usually brilliant. However in low light (i would recommend getting a separate flash) & in certain other situations, the camera requires the user to get more creative in order to produce decent shots. The one thing missing from this camera is a toggle switch for user settings. In manual I developed the ideal settings for my beach shots, but once I switched back to auto they were lost.

5 Star Review By Bre LaRow on Adorama - Apr 30, 2013

As soon as I got the camera, I ran outside and used auto to snap a bunch of photos. That evening I read more about how to use manual mode, and have been using it ever since. It takes great pictures in auto and scene modes, but has all the manual settings for a beginner to learn more about photography. My only small complainant is that it only has 11 focus points, but there are tricks and settings to assist with this. It's an awesome and affordable camera.

5 Star Review By RTarres on Adorama - Apr 30, 2013

I had many doubts about the true meaning of the term refurbished. After opening the box I found a brand new camera, with all the accessories sealed and even better: with only 1700 shots. It's a camera with many control options that allow you to get very good pictures and enjoy while taking them.

Excellent Enthusiast Camera
4 Star Review By Steve the enthusiast on Adorama - Apr 30, 2013

I've taken photos of flowers, family and local scenes and this camera has proved to be a joy to use. Having recently switched from Sony DSLR's, I hadn't realized what I had been missing with image quality and nice layout. My only frustration is the camera needs a dedicated switch for iso. It is frustrating to have to go to the menu to change on the fly.

I traded in my Nikon D90 for the D5100 and returned it due to softness, and focusing issues. My lens is the Nikon 18-105mm, and I had great photos with the D90, but this 2nd D5100 seems much better. I still have some "softness" issues, and will try in cam

5 Star Review By JazeR540 on Adorama - Apr 23, 2013

Upgraded from my D50 to the 5100 and was so impressed a purchased a second as a gift for my retired parents -- the camera feels incredibly balanced when you hold it, tight, compact, and lightweight even with my 18-200m lens mounted you will not regret the camera, but don't waste your time with bundles, get the camera body seperate and then add the excellent 18-200m lens and do away with a whole bag of toys D5100 + 18-200mm + 35mm (1.8) = perfect package

Excellent, Capable first DSLR
5 Star Review By Plvs Vltra on Adorama - Apr 23, 2013

Bought this camera for travel. I took it to DC recently to photograph cherry blossoms, and I was impressed with what I was able to do. It was easy to experiment and learn. I actually bought this camera for the lens compatibility and it was a great product for a great price. I give it 5 stars for a first dSLR.

Just like new!
5 Star Review By raoolio on Adorama - Apr 15, 2013

Hi, I was looking for my first DSLR coming from a Canon Powershot. I did a lot of research like every budget oriented consumer out there. I could have gone with de D3200 but no swivel screen, then there was the new D5200, but you had to pay a premium for basically the same camera with more megapixels and the D7000's autofocus system. That's when I found this terrific refurbished offer, I was skeptical at first, but the camera came well packed with brand new accesories, my family couldn't tell it wasn't new :) I went with this body and skipped the kit lens, opting for the Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G instead. I highly recommend this refurbished camera.

First Refurb Buy, Wasn't Disappointed
4 Star Review By M. Bersabal on Adorama - Mar 27, 2013

I purchased this after problems with the shutter release on my D40. Even though I selected Super Saver shipping, I was happy to see it arrived two days after my order was placed (as apposed to the allotted 7-10). I'll admit I was a little hesitant to buy refurbished, but the reviews were all great and the price was so low. The camera had a tiny scratch on the LCD upon arrival but other than that it looked to be in brand new condition. It works wonderfully and I have no regrets! Great product.

Refurbished Nikon D5100 purchase
5 Star Review By Pam on Adorama - Jan 30, 2013

I replaced my D90 with a refurbished D5100, and am thrilled with the upgrade. I love the easy bracketing and HDR features, and appreciate the accurate ISO and histogram capabilities. I have a D300, but anticipate the D5100 will become my go-to, everyday camera---not only because of the beautiful images it produces, but also its functional size. My husband uses it as a point and shoot, and loves the ease and image results. Thank you Nikon and Adorama!

I would buy this product again and again
5 Star Review By Sharing Sharon on Adorama - Jan 29, 2013

This is definitely an awesome upgrade from my lame D40X before. I really like how easy to use it is. Although it is fairly different from what I'm used to with the D40X, it's pretty easy to figure out where everything is without reading the instructions manual yet. One thing that I had a little trouble with was Noise Reduction. I still haven't been able to find that function yet. Other than that, everything seems really good.
