Nikon Coolpix S1
4 Star Review Imaging Resource - Jun 13, 2005

Nikon's Coolpix line of consumer digicams has always been well-received, appreciated for their image quality and ease of use. The Nikon Coolpix S1 starts a new design trend for the company, packing a lot of features, a 5.1-megapixel CCD with 3x zoom lens, and a surprisingly large 2.5-inch LCD into a very small, attractive package. The Nikon S1 shares some common limitations with other tiny subcompact models, in the form of limited battery life and a tendency to produce soft corners in its images, but these shortcomings seem to be more or less universal tradeoffs required by the tiny form factor. Image-wise, the Nikon Coolpix S1 delivers very bright, snappy-looking photos with vibrant, hue-accurate color and plenty of detail for making large prints. The S1's color is indeed very bright: This will appeal to a majority of consumers, who have again and again shown a strong preference for bright color, but may be a bit too "hot" for those accustomed to the more restrained color of higher-end and professional digital camera models. The Nikon S1 is intended as a take-anywhere "pocket" camera, rather than a bells-and-whistles/ultimate image quality mainstay for the photo enthusiast, and does quite well at the task for which it was intended. For the those willing to delve just slightly deeper than "just pushing the button," The Nikon S1's extensive scene modes and unique framing-assist options greatly extend its capabilities, making it easy to bring back good-looking shots of what might otherwise be difficult subjects. All in all, a nice little subcompact digicam, worthy to be called a "Dave's Pick." 4 Star Review laptopmag.com - Jun 29, 2005

Not long ago, a camera with this much power would barely fit in your bag, let alone your pocket. Nikon has packed 5.1 megapixels of photographic fun into a package about the size of a deck of cards. The Coolpix S1 is a perfect pocket companion with the kind of smart automatic features that make taking pictures easy. The brushed silver exterior of the S1 not only looks cool, it gives it a reassuring heft. However, it’s no heifer, at only 4.2 ounces and 0.8 inches thick, the S1 easily slips into the inside pocket of a sport coat. For those tight jeans wearers among you, the S1 will give you a bit of bulge, but to find a noticeably slimmer camera you’ll have to ditch some megapixels.

2 Star Review By member Trottsie - Nov 24, 2005

Strengths: Small size, great design.

Weakness: Very poor photo quality without a flash.

While photo quality in strong light is good, I am very disappointed in low light photography without a flash. The camera has a "blur warning" which you have to turn off since basically anytime you take a picture without the flash it says "Photo is blurred, discard?". And indeed, the photos you take will be blurred. Also the flash is quite weak and is good only for close-up pictures.

When is a Pocket Camera not a Pocket Camera?
2 Star Review By member Gene_in_Alabama - Sep 18, 2005

Strengths: Small size, smooth contours, large LCD

Weakness: LCD not great in bright light, especially since there is no optical viewfinder

A pocket camera is not a pocket camera when it will not tolerate the pocket environment. In four months, my Coolpix S1 has twice suffered the disabling "Lens Cover Error", the first time after only one month of use. The diagnosis from Nikon's warranty repair service was sand and corrosion in the mechanism. My last pocket camera never failed during four years of continuous pocket carriage, and it is in backup use again. I am in the market now for a new pocket camera.

4 Star Review By member adminmail_1116527191 - Jul 11, 2005

Strengths: Form factor, scene modes, lcd size

Weakness: Common flaws in cameras of this size and you must charge battery while its in the camera.

I have had this camera for a couple weeks and thus far I am quite happy. It was a tough choice between the Sony T7 and the SD powershot's but I wanted a 2.5 LCD and based on some feedback from a friend and the price, I went with the S1. So far I have very little complaints. Obviously a camera of this size will suffer from common quality issues, but overall I must say I am quite pleased with the purchase. I thought at first the scene modes would be useless, but thus far they seemed to be very helpful. The redeye reduction (digital) also is very impressive.

Strengths: size, look, picture quality (given the size of its lens), ease of use, 5mega pixel, nikkor ed lens

Weakness: picture quality is not the best i've seen. nikon 4500 and even 2100 looked better than this, but they're also much bigger.

a really nice small camera. i chose this over sony because i think Nikkor lens is much more superior than Sony lens and Carl Zeiss lens. I've always been a loyal follower of nikon and always like the picture quality. this being its very first camera with its slimline design to compete with Sony's DSC-T1, i am very impressed with it, and like it for what it is. image quality is excellant considering the size of the lens, and that it's not retractable like the Canon. but it is a good camera at a reasonable price, and uses SD card! this is a great camera if you just want a point and shoot digital camera that fit in your pocket.

Strengths: beautiful design; very easy in use; a lot of useful features.

Weakness: red eye reduction does not always work very well; approximately 10% of the pictures have round hazy spots.

most pictures are fairly good and sharp. So far the nature of the mentioned above hazy spots is not clear, but professionals say that it's a camera defect. If that's indeed the case I wouldn't recommend to purchase this camera.

Strengths: very sharp, crisp, and clean LCD display. Very easy to use. Light and full of fun features.

Weakness: Only thing i've notice so far was that there was no viewfinder; granted, there's really no need for one.

Actually, i felt that it was about time Nikon made a camera this small with all the features it has from all the other coolpix cameras. when i saw it, i didn't hesitate to buy it right away.
