CoolPix L18-Warranty stinks
1 Star Review   By member O2 - May 11, 2009

Strengths: looks nice

Weakness: piece of junk

Purchased a L18 for my daughter for her birthday in December 08 and by March 09 the lens would not open. Warranty said it was jammed and not covered under warranty. It would cost more than we paid for the camera to repair and 12.50 to ship, ridiculous, priority mail is $4.90. I will never buy a Nikon Product again. Even the professional reviews say the lens is wobbly. They really do not warranty their products.

Nikon Coolpix L18
1 Star Review

Strengths: seemed to be a good value for the price. However, it does not download pictures to my computer, never has. Never will.

Weakness: Nikon, arrogant and unresponsive company.

Never buy a Nikon. they are not the camera they were, they are not the least responsive to their problems. I have never gotten one picture out of my camera on to my computer to even look at if the quality is good or not. To share the pictures, I must take the camera a view it on their 3 inch screen. Worthless product and company I have experienced.

Good Quality/Low Price
4 Star Review   By Its a winner on Beach Camera - Nov 21, 2008

Strengths: Ease of use is a BIG plus. Buttons are clearly marked to lessen any confusion. Excellent for still shots...indoors or out. Super quality pics!

Weakness: The anti-shake dosen't really help all that much. Buttons are a bit small for those with big fingers...like me.

I'm a police officer in Alabama. Our department issued these cameras to each officer for use in photographing evidence, suspects, etc. I liked it so much I bought one for my family. You really can't beat the combination of quality product and low price.

Coolpix L18 is pretty cool!!!
5 Star Review   By member davepq - Aug 7, 2008

Strengths: User friendly and pretty simple to operate. It is compact and can be placed in small hand bag/case. The viewing screen is larger than the average smaller cameras. The 2 color selections are vibrant.

Weakness: The compartment door where the batteries and sd card are loaded does not open/close easily. Should have added more color choices.

This camera was purchased for my 12 year old daughter who absolutely adores it. At one time she was constantly using her cell phone to take pictures, however, she was not able to share her photos with family and friends. The cost to add the camera feature to the cellular package was not feasible. She can save hundreds of pictures now onto the SD card or even load them on an online photo website that provides free space for up to a certain amount of bytes.

CoolPix L18
4 Star Review

Strengths: easy to use; takes good pictures

Weakness: power down is a little aggravating after only 3 seconds

Really like this camera; the pictures come out really great and clear with true colors. I think the power down interval should be a little longer before it powers down. Sometimes the moment is gone before you can get the camera up. Otherwise, I would recommend it.

Bad quality
1 Star Review

Weakness: Dark grainy pictures

I was not pleased at all with this camera and plan to return it tomorrow. Although it says Nikon it does not represent the typical quality of Nikon. Pictures were grainy, blury, and dark.

Nice little camera
4 Star Review   By member kahawken - Jun 20, 2008

Strengths: For low end camera, I like the fact that it's pretty easy to use. Past experience with another Coolpix (over 4 years usage...and would still have except I dropped it) brings me back to this brand.

Weakness: Might not have all the bells and whistles that some would like.

I like the point and shoot and not a whole lot more. I expect good clear photos and do not want to pay a lot...this camera is priced right.

Good "point & shoot"
4 Star Review   By member Geazer - Jun 10, 2008

Strengths: Starts up quickly, huge screen, pocket-sized, light weight, GREAT lens, and uses AA batteries.

Weakness: Plastic body feels cheap.

I have had this camera for 2 weeks and have taken about 300 images, both still and video under all kinds of conditions. I wanted a pocket camera that used AA batteries and had a sharp lens. This fulfills that criteria. If you want more bells and whistles, then this camera may not be for you. For the price, it's a good deal and if something happens to it, you won't go hungry replacing it. I hope it functions over the long haul. Once I learned the various camera settings, I was able to switch quickly between video and still photos. The camera's sleek shape slips into my pocket easily and is light enough that it doesn't tug down on my shirt or pants. I wish Nikon put a better gripping surface on the camera. The few dimples on the hard plastic surface make me fear it may slip out of my hand. Overall, the plastic body feels rather cheap. I wonder how many times I will be able to open and close the battery door before it starts to wear? Hopefully, it will last as long as my last Nikon Coolpix, because the images from this light, little camera are sharp. I also like that it uses AA batteries, because I never want to be stuck somewhere without batteries. I recommend this camera for someone looking for a simple pocket-sized point-and-shoot camera that takes good photos.

Great camera at the price
3 Star Review   By member gmilap - Jun 10, 2008

Strengths: Large screen. The big screen is definately a plus for this camera. Supports SD cards. Picture quality is awsome. Automatic red eye detection removes the red eye problem in the picture. Anti shake AE

Weakness: The indoor pictures looks dull when there is not sufficient light. The battery got used up pretty fast. Takes little bit longer to download into computer as compared to Sony DSC 730 I had earlier.

Overall I am happy with camera given the price range. It has pretty much good features as compared to other cameras in this price range and the 8 MP is definately a plus. I will give 3/5 rating for this camera.

Nikon Camera and Warranty Stinks
1 Star Review   By member ronfox49 - May 22, 2008

Strengths: Low price for a cheap camera

Weakness: bad screen design, bad low light performance, grainy pictures

I had my L18 for a month and a half when the LCD screen went bad. Turned it on and had black spots and lines all over it. Sent in to Nikon for warranty service and they said the screen had been damaged (NOT…it has been sitting on a counter since the last time I used it) and it was not covered and would cost over $100.00 to fix! They also wanted 12.50 to ship it back…it cost me 2.40 to ship it to them! What a scam. Nikon warranty and service stinks. Stay away from this product and Nikon in general. Mine is not the only review with this same problem. Check out the web for yourself. Canon makes a much better product and takes care of their customers.

Coolpix L18
4 Star Review   By member pjobmann - May 7, 2008

Strengths: Small size, picture quality, ease of use, large viewing screen.

Weakness: None yet.

The Nikon Coolpix L18 digital camera is a great value. With 8 megapix, small size and large viewing screen it is a great camera to use for vacations. I have taken some great photos with the camera and expect even more as I learn to use some of the features. I recommend this camera to the casual user.

Nikon L18
3 Star Review   By member birdman 1101 - Apr 11, 2008

Strengths: Inexpensive, small, 8 mega-pixels

Weakness: Menu a little unintuitive, button instead of switch for shoot vs. review modes

This is the least expensive of the Canon and Nikon digitals at around $140 but it still has plenty of features for those who have been using digitial point-and-shoots for years such as myself. Exposure and flash adjustments are decent, although I haven't tried any macro/close-up focusing shot. The menus are a little weird although I have not gone beyond the Canon realm much before using this camera. Overall it feels a little lackluster, but for an entry-level model you can't expect much.

High-end feels in a low-end price
4 Star Review   By member sky2go - Apr 7, 2008

Strengths: Big 3" LCD, Nikkor 3x optical lens, small size, zoom in video mode, panoramic assistant mode, marco mode

Weakness: No control of ISO setting, shutter lag

Myself is a prosumer SLR user. This time a gift-buying opportunity let me put my hands on this cute little entry-level camera while still under my favored brand name. While I had chances to play with more than ten of other P&S cameras, it's a surprise that many high-end features are now coming down to some low price range cameras. This L18 is the best example of these "cross-over" compromise. . The 3" LCD is a steal for this price. Our grandam is the one who really needs it, but those $300+ camera might have too many buttons for her. This one is just right. . The picture quality is pretty good, a Nikon standard. The only thing I would like to point out is the noticeable noise under some condition. I found out it's due to those auto modes trying to compensate for the low light by increasing the ISO. But there is no way to fix the ISO you want. It's good for hand-held, which means you are trading in shaking with some noise. But if you use tripod, you need to try some of the scene modes to reduce the noise. It's very easy to get noisy picture when shotting indoor or low light condition. Outdoor is fine. . Again, there is no manual control in this one. Fully auto, with a bunch of scene modes which is good for teens. I especially like the panoramic assistant mode, which will superimpose your previous picture on the viewer so that you can align your next shot. It's fun, you need to try it. . Like many high-end, this one can take video too. Quality is what you expected here. While some other camera won't let you use the zoom during video mode, you can with this one. Switching between play and capture, video and photo is very quick. There is a quick way to delete the picture you just took without switching to the play mode. Just press the trash button and confirm. Very nice. . But like many P&S, the shutter lag, is still a noticeable problem. The start up time is ok. It just after you press the shutter, trying to be smart for you, the little guy do have quite some of the things to do before it can take in a picture. But guess I am comparing to the DSLR, after all, it's about the same for most of the P&S. It's around 0.5 sec, not too bad. Do a half-press like we do for SLR would help. . Preview pictures on the big screen is very nice. You can zoom in and pan and can also run a slideshow. Upload pictures is easy, no software installation is needed. The build-in memory is good as a backup and can take about six pictures. A 1G SD card can hold 300+ highest resolution pictures. But the pictures and videos are mixed together in the order they are taken. All of the EXIT info are stored with the picture including the orientation (allow auto-rotate of the picture). But only limited info are displayed on the screen. (You might not really need to know the others.) . Overall, I think Nikon did a good job in coming out this baby with some nice features you really want, but cutting out all the others to keep the price low. . In my heart, I have no problem rating it a 5 stars considering the sector it's targeting, but still this is not a full feature, killing-all, super-performance camera. But I would recommend it to anyone who is in this price range and don't want any manual control. I don't mind having it as my backup either.

Coolpix L18 Blue Digital Camera
4 Star Review   By member caoq - Mar 20, 2008

Strengths: Good optical quality, powerful digital zoom

Weakness: too much noise

Coolpix L18 Blue Digital Camera is very compact, but has powerful 4x optical zoom. The optical quality is good compare to similar size digital cameras. The build quality is also a plus, like the blue color.
