5 Star Review   By member cochran77 - May 15, 2004

Strengths: + Compact, smooth exterior, and fairly indestructable; + Swivel lens is convenient (also helps in bright light to see the LCD screen); + "Scene" presets are well-designed and produce good results

Weakness: - Low-light shots are usually going to disappoint you; - No optical viewfinder can frustrate in "point-and-shoot" situations

This camera is showing up a lot in the "refurbished" state on the web, so I thought I'd offer my comments. If you are looking to give your teenager (especially a girl) a digital camera as a gift, look no further than the 2500. It is sleek, cool looking, and fits in a pocket or small purse perfectly. If you want to protect it a little more with a case, there are little shoulder-strapped ones that work great, and look like a small purse in the process (No more, "Are you kidding, Dad? I can't carry THAT thing around!"). Know any eBay junkies? Well, the 2500 is perfect for getting shots ready for the auction in a jiffy, with no hassles. And, the easy upload features and bundled software make it a "plug and play" computer accessory, even for Grandma. And guess what...it takes great pictures, too! What more can you want in an inexpensive lightweight? Unless you take most of your shots at night or in pubs, you should find the 2500 is a fun, versatile tool, worthy of being your constant companion...wherever you hide it. PS: Unlike what ravilyn said, when the unit goes into sleep mode, pressing the shutter button will turn it back on. It's not necessary to slide the power switch to 'off' and back to 'on' (yes, ravilyn, the switch does seem somewhat flimsy).

Strengths: Ease of use and portibility

Weakness: Needs longer zoom range and better battery

I bought this camera for vacation last Christmas. I love the digital feature and now have three compact flash cards so that I never run out of "film". It takes great pictures inside and out, but you have to learn how to use it. I typically put in the museum mode for indoors and that seems pretty good. When using the flash, you only get about 10 feet of illumination. The zoom range could be longer, but then the camera would probably have to be bigger, or do away with the swivel lens. That is a neat feature for taking self or small group pictures. The swivel also protects the lense from snow and dirt. Battery is a little weak but nothing that a backup battery wouldn't fix.

Strengths: N/A as this is my first Digital Camera

Weakness: The flash does not fire after I took 10 pictures.

It just pissed me off. Only 3 days to find out I cannot take picture with flash ... I have to pay to ship it back to Nikon. Do you think Nikon should pick it up from my door and return a new one quickly? I thought I would get a good camera after I paid the price. Now I have to spend time to get service. The guy on phone does not care my feeling. I will never buy anything from Nikon any more!

4 Star Review   By member islandkanaka - Aug 4, 2003

Strengths: Good for outdoor photos, light and very compact, come with a rechargeable battery.

Weakness: Poor for night photo, does not do so well with poorly lit indoors, LCD Screen scratches easily.

I bought this cameras when I was on a trip in Japan although it has it's flaws I still consider this camera a good investment. The quality of the pictures are superb, especially in the outdoors. Although indoor photos needs a little work, the cause of this is the flash it's too weak. The LCD screen in back scratches easily if you do not put the camera in a case. Nikon should sell this camera with a case but then you can buy one for less than $10. It does not have a manual viewfinder so you are completly dependant on the LCD screen. I took this camera on another vacation and I was satisified with the photos. Although there are flaws I will definitely recommend this camera to those who enjoy convenience, and simplicity.

Weakness: you have to use the screen to take pictures, it eats away the battery quickly.

GREAT CAMERA OVERALL!!! I LOVE IT, I CAN'T PUT IT DOWN. EVEN THOUGH THE VIDEO MODE IS VERY SHORT AND THERE'S NO SOUND IT IS STILL USEFUL FOR MANY THINGS. I HAVE ALREADY FILMED MY BROTHER FALLING DOWN THE STAIRS! YOU DON'T NEED SOUND TO STILL ENJOY A LITTLE 'SPUR' OF THE MOMENT ACTION! I RECOMMEND THE CAMERA FOR PEOPLE OF ALL AGES.

Strengths: Extremely portable! Easy to use! Great lens! With all that's in the menus, you got what's needed to take MUCH better shots than the average beginner!

Weakness: Only thing is no manual shutter speed control - also can't accessorise - BUT, this IS a compact! Compensation for me is the results I find playing with the scenes, white balance & exposure.

I'm VERY happy with this handy & friendly little digi-camera! I'm having great fun & getting such inspiring results! By the way, my very first shots were up against my friends much more advanced camera - & guess who got the most GOOD shots & the least flops? Yep, this little guy. If it's a compact little digital you're after - this is it! Be warned though: this camera will be your "first". What's happened to me is I've gotten hooked on digi-tography!!! Now I want a more advanced camera in addition. (I'm convinced only after these short 6 weeks I can do it just as a good as any professional.) AND MY BOTTOM LINE IS: when I get that more advanced camera, THIS is the one I'm going to ALWAYS have in my pocket to keep the "just in case" moment covered. Folks, in case you missed my meaning, this camera has a 100% recommendation from me as a fantastic introduction into the wonderful world of digital!

Strengths: It has nice zooming to take pictures 2x to 3x t/w you could walk around with it, and put it in your pocket.

Weakness: There is a problem the battery clip it is very week and, you have to baby it very gently. I wouldn't recommend it for any one to buy.

It is nice to take pictures with, and uploading them was also fine. The problem is that you have to open the battery and close it every time you have to charge it from 6hrs. to 8hrs. and also to change the memory card that part of the opening and closing it could break the clip. That's why I brought back to Best Buy's store. I would try a different camera.

Strengths: Small size, Swivel lens, easy-to-use menus, scene modes, easy upload, good software

Weakness: Weak flash, bad for night shots

I got this camera for Christmas, and, although I am not a beginner, I enjoy this camera. I grant that it is a beginner's camera, but as a teenager, I wanted something I could easily bring with me when I went places with my friends. I also love that I don't have to worry about scuffing up the lens or about losing the lens cap. It fits nicely in my pocket or my purse without weighing it down. Pictures are easy to view and upload is very easy. Unfortunately, my nighttime pictures didn't turn out so well. The mode settings help with that, however. The camera takes beautiful sunset shots and sharp close-ups. This is a great, non-professional, teenager-type camera.

Strengths: Ease of use

Weakness: Too many flashes on red-eye reduction mode

Our first digital camera and we're very pleased. The picture quality is just what we wanted. I had the whole thing setup and figured out in no time at all. And the computer program and download speed are excellent.

2 Star Review   By member ravilyn - Dec 2, 2002

Strengths: Good quality pictures, software bundle, cool design

Weakness: 1: Lowlight flash pix marred by ghostly circles; 2: Very weak flash; 3: LCD screen cant be turned off.

I just returned the camera after taking 3 months. Costo's return policy is a winner. The main problem was the ghostly circles of light that appear randomly and frequently in low light flash photos. Further experiments convinced me that it is the florescent light behind the camera plays a role. These circles are created by dust very close to the lens scattering the light. None of my film cameras had this problem. It is the unusual design of a flash bulb that is cheek by jowl with the lens, sensitivity of the CCD to ultraviolet light, lens geometry and high gain needed for low light photos that was the cause. Other users are also complaining of this at other sites. 2. The following deficiencies I was willing to live with: 2.1 Flash too weak. 2.2 LCD is the only viewer and it can't be turned off without turning off the whole camera. Of course it timesout and goes off. But to bring it back to life you need to switch if off and on again! The switch felt flimsy. 3. The photoimpression 4.0 bundled with the camera does an excellent job. Pictures turn out to be slightly darker but the color balance and quality was much better than even the 3 MP Kodak 4330. Would recommend it for outdoor photos, homes with halogen and incandescent lamps. Slips easily into the pocket and the menu and other controls are very nice.

Strengths: Easy to use, Good quality pictures, Cool design

Weakness: No direct shutter-speed adjustment.

The camera has great basic features and cool design. It's been gerat except that it doesn't have a shutter speed ajustment except when you change scenes, but when you do that it adjusts it automaticly, you don't get to control it. But overall, that's my only major complaint. Image quality is good and the camera is very simple and easy to learn. If you want to be able to take great pictures with a cool design, this is a good camera. But if you want a lot of features, this camera is pretty simple.

2 Star Review   By member Moe_Boogie - Sep 12, 2002

Strengths: Very easy to use. Great Day and well lit pictures! I think it is a very good cam for beginners, because I was one.

Weakness: Horrible on inside club or low light situations! Too Much Red Eye!

This is a pretty good cam, my only complaint is more with the store clerk who sold it to me than it is with the cam. I had asked him, to tell me what would be a really good cam for inside club or party shots, and he said this one would be fine. Well unfortunately, this cam is not good for that at all. It gives off way to much red eye, because the flash is so close to the lens. Great lens though! But I work in a business, where I need to take inside club shots and I would not select this camera for that. Something where the flash isn't as close to the lens and maybe more iso. But that's for next time.

Strengths: Great design, easy to use, great battery life, convienient size, and it takes great pictures. Perfect for easy point and shoot use.

Weakness: None found to date. Shutter speed on auto focus is a little slow, but fine with manual focus.

The swivel lens can rotate all the way around so you can take pictures of yourself. It’s also great when you set the timer since you will still be able to see the viewfinder. This camera gives a lot of bang for the buck if you don’t need an expert camera, plus you’ll have one of the coolest looking cameras around.

Strengths: The zoom and picture quality are great! Another perk is it is extremely easy to upload and organize pictures. One of my favorite things about it is the size! I take it everywhere and shoot everything!

Weakness: It might be a little slow to start up b/c I never use the flash so I have to turn it off every time I turn the camera on.

All in all this is the best camera I ever used! The zoom, picture quality, and interface make up for the flash being on at the start. I highly reccomend this camera to anyone who doesn't want a huge camera to lug around and wants to shoot anything everywhere!

Strengths: very easy to use. Image transfer to a computer is a snap...just press transfer button. Picture quality is great. Also like the zoom feature in playback mode.

Weakness: A little hard to remove Compact Flash/battery cover.

I also have a Coolpix 775. The 2500 is comparable to the 775. The 2500 has a better look. Nikon also fixed some of the "slowness" of the 775 (when it comes to deleting existing pictures). Scene selection is not as simple as the 775, but this is a great camera for someone who just wants to point & click digital pictures.

Strengths: Very easy to operate. Execeptional zoom options and great scene features to use when you are in different setting!

Weakness: I really couldn't find any weakness with this camera except maybe the shutter speed is a little slow.

I would recommend this camera to anyone, because it is easy to operate and easy to carry around in your pocket. This camera produces great 8x10 pictures off my epson photo 785epx printer pretty awesome! Great night pictures too!

i was anticipating a great camera - now i cant wait to return it - i went out to buy a new cannon, but came back with this mess. Would not recommend - and i will go back, loose my 15% on the return and buy a cannon!
