DCRP Review: Fuji FinePix S700
3.5 Star Review  DCResource - Jun 18, 2007

While the FinePix S700 isn't the best ultra zoom camera, it's arguably one of the best ultra zooms for people on a budget. It has features not typically found on lower-end cameras, and puts them into a solid, well designed body. It's far from a perfect camera, but if you want a lot of zoom for not a lot of dough, the FinePix S700 is worth checking out.

Fuji S700
2 Star Review   By member BobBlank - Dec 12, 2010

Strengths: Price, picture quality

Weakness: Pop-up Flash, Repair

I love this camera! It was cheap to buy and it takes great pictures, BUT when the pop-up flash quit working and I went looking for repairs, I found that if repairs could be made at all, they were more expensive than the original cost of the camera. Fuji's support of this camera is non-existent. I would never buy another Fuji product.

This camera is GREAT!!!
5 Star Review   By member NolaRita - Apr 22, 2009

Strengths: Easy to use. Easy to learn features and functions. Does great pics and video.

Weakness: Some features cause slow shutter speed, but that's as bad as it gets.

I love this camera. It's compact enough to toss in a good size purse. Takes awesome pics and great video. My husband who has larger hands loves it too, some of the new cameras have gone so compact only a woman can hold it. This one was built with everyone in mind. Buy this camera, you'll love it for everyday use.

Creativity At Your Fingertips
4 Star Review   By member spitfiredeez954 - Jan 9, 2009

Strengths: Can screw on fisheyes, filters, and hood with no problem. Manual settings. Great for beginners.

Weakness: Noise past 400 iso. Low sitting flash.

I've had this camera for almost a year now. I didn't know much on composing shots at first, but its easy to learn about photography with this camera. The camera itself is very sturdy, even though its made of cheap plastic. It's been dropped accidentally from a 2'7" desk to tile floor, nothing busted just minor scratches. Being able to buy a cheap screw-on fisheye opens many opportunities for shooting events. After around 3000 shots, the flash no longer pops up. It will try but won't support itself. Taking shots with 400 iso and flash can create noise issues. Overall this camera is great for totting around with you anywhere.

Strengths: feels similar to my film slr, and controls are easy to understand

Weakness: autofocus is slow and not good for anything except still shots. Manual focus to difficult for action orientated shooting

I am kinda old school, with many old 35mm film slrs. This is my third digital, and it can take very nice pictures, but is limited to slow subjects due to slow focusing. In the instances I have used it for fast action, I have been disappointed with blurred or out of focus shots. Clarity and clear pictures are acheivable, and I have used this camera for stills and scenery shots, where it did an excellent job. I give it high marks for price vs. quality, but it will not meet all my shooting needs, and is only used part of the time.

Fuji FinePix S700
3 Star Review

Strengths: Nice shots in auto mode. Great for outdoor pictures. Nice balance & feel.

Weakness: Poor image stabilization. Hard to get good closeup pictures.

To take long shots, you have to use a tripod or some other form of support. The image stabilization that Fuji uses is not real IS. In IS mode, they just pick the fastest ISO setting available so the shutter speed is fast. This usually results in grainy pictures. My main disappointment is in the macro/super macro mode. I mainly bought the camera to take a lot of closeup shots of my diecast car collections. I have not had a lot of success. The book even warns you that auto focus might not work well in macro mode. I thought that meant that you could use manual focus mode, but no. When you are in macro or super macro mode, the camera won't let you set manual focus mode. I've tried setting the apeture priority mode (to allow depth of field) and using zoom in conjunction with manual focus. It looks great in the viewfinder but doesn't turn out that way when transferred to a computer. You can tell it's out of focus. I have a few days left and then I'll have to keep it or return it. I think it's going back.

Excellent inexpensive super zoom for the novices.
5 Star Review   By member educris - Feb 29, 2008

Strengths: Price. Very good pictures in automatic mode. Full manual controls for those difficult situations. 10x zoom in a small and light body. Big and high-resolution LCD screen.

Weakness: Some noise at ISO 400 and above. Flimsy SD and battery door covers. Some tendency to blow up highlights.

The Fuji FinePix S700 is a nice little superzoom. Although it is bigger that the usual "compact camera", it packs a 10x optical zoom. The lens resides entirely in the interior of the body. Although it makes the camera bulkier, it is also more protected. The photographs are usually well exposed with nice and saturated "Fuji" colors, and very good resolution for your 4 x 6 or 5 x 7 pics, or to look at the screen. I assume that bigger pics will also look great, as far as they are taken at ISO 200 or lower. The performance in low light is not as good as other Fuji cameras with super CCD (i.e. it is not on par with the Fuji F series). However, the flash makes a good job in those difficult situations. Auto focus time is usually fast, even in low-light situations, thanks to the help of a bright and orange focus assist lamp. The wide end of the lens is a bit long at 31 mm equivalent, but it is fine in most situations. The camera is certainly aimed towards nature photography, with well-illuminated far and steady subjects. In low light situations the flash usually helps, but you need to be near the subject, which overrides the usefulness of the big zoom. The camera takes very good photographs in automatic mode. It also has plenty of pre-selected modes, which certainly help in most situations. For those that like to try new things, it also offers full manual controls. The macro mode, in particular, is excellent. Also excellent is the LCD screen, which is big at 2.5 inches and of very good resolution. The viewfinder, on the other side, is small and of low resolution. I use it only in very bright environments, when the LCD reflects too much external light. All in all, a camera plenty of functions, ideal for the beginner that could grow with the camera until he or she could manage the entire manual controls.

FinePix S700 digital camera
4 Star Review   By member sssxyz - Feb 21, 2008

Strengths: 10x optical zoom, use AA batteries, intelligent flash, SD / xD card compatible

Weakness: bulky, date impose feature

I bought this camera before we took our Christmas vacation. In general, I really like it. It is a great camera for the price (on sale). I love the 10X optical zoom. My old digital camera only has 3x optical zoom. The long zoom gives me a chance to zoom in the far away object. Being able to use the regular AA batteries is very nice although I would recommend to use rechargeable batteries. It needs four batteries. The battery life is very good when using rechargeable one. The intelligent flash seems to help me a lot in indoor pictures. My old camera always over-exposed. Able to use either SD / xD card is a big plus. I wish the size was more compact like those packet size one. I am still puzzling how to print a picture with date imposed. From the user manual, it seems you can tun the date impose on and off only when using the PictBridge to print picture. I usually took the SD card out and use the SD card reader in my computer to do print or upload to the website.

Good camera for the money
4 Star Review   By member goodrisktaker - Feb 5, 2008

Strengths: 10x optical zoom, use AA battery, able to use len filters, choice of SD / xD card

Weakness: odd shape, not optical image stabilizer, weight

I wanted a digital camera with longer optical zoom but did not want to pay a lot of money. I found this camera on sales during the Christmas holidays and was within my budget. I like the 10x optical zoom. Using rechargeable AA batteries saves me paying a lot of money for those special OEM batteries. This camera accepts SD card which I have quite a few at home. I would not have bought this camera if it only uses xD card. You can easily find SD cards in a very low price but no xD cards. Because the len is not extending it out when zooming, you can use len filters to protect the len or create some special effect. The shape of the camera odd and not very attractive. It is kind of big and a little bit heavy because of using AA batteries. It has kind of image stabilizer but not a true optical one. It simply bumps up the ISO to compensate it. It also does not have those face detection features.

Fuji FinePix S700
4 Star Review   By member bossfan55 - Dec 30, 2007

Strengths: Great zoom, good camera for price

Weakness: Indoor shots can be grainy

Overall, this is a nice camera. It's great to find something at this price with a 10X zoom. Also, it's good that Fuji has gotten away from the XD card, as this also uses the more common SD. The biggest weakness is indoor shooting - the pictures are a bit grainy.

Mac compatible?
4 Star Review   By member subordinary - Dec 26, 2007

Strengths: Compact, full-featured yet simple camera design

Weakness: Manual not very helpful for Mac owners

Got this from family for Christmas. Love the camera, but can't seem to get it to upload to my MacBook. I've checked the literature, and I've done everything by the book, at least as far as I can read it... The manual is plagued in a few places by mediocre translation, and isn't very Mac owner friendly. The manual says that when I connect the camera to the "PC" and turn it on, that the FinePixViewer software will open automagically and the pics will upload on their own. What happens, instead, is that the camera will show the USB connection screen when turned on, the green light will flash for about a second, and then... nothing else. I tried manually uploading the pics, but the computer has no idea the camera is even there. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the CD twice. I don't have a card reader on my Mac, and I shouldn't have to buy one if a camera is supposed to work with it... HELP!

Fuji S700 Review
4 Star Review   By member Masonex - Dec 26, 2007

Strengths: Great optical zoom potential. Larger LCD than my previous S7000. Takes SD cards as opposed to strictly XD.

Weakness: Image stabilization isn't optical. Has trouble focusing at times under higher zooms.

The price I paid definitely makes the camera worth it. Compared to the Fuji S7000 I have owned for a few years now it has a larger LCD display and accepts SD cards which wasn't the case for Fuji cameras until recently. The 10x optical zoom is great but the image stabilization isn't optical which leaves something to be desired. Also the auto focusing can be problematic when near the 10x end of the optical zoom range. Perhaps a manual focus option would help with this...

Great Camera
4 Star Review

Strengths: I love the 10x optical zoom.

Weakness: The plastic is kind of cheap feeling, mainly around battery door and lens area. Strap is not adjustable. Indoor pictures are grainy sometimes.

I love the fact it takes SD and XD memory, the SD seems faster than the XD in my old camera, but I havent tried the XD in this camera yet though as my SD card is larger. I got this camera for a great price (~$100), so for me it was a fantastic deal, I would bet you could find a better camera for $200 and above though (the list price). The video isnt very well (as with most digital cameras).

4 Star Review   By member mithun2005 - Dec 13, 2007

Strengths: ZOOM lightweight auto "point and shoot" plus manual (you can choose) Excellent picture colors use SD and XD card OK Movie Good macro and super macro pictures three year warranty at company website

Weakness: Grainy LCD Lacks image stabilization (substitute with picture stabilization = fast shutter speed) Plastic body and tripod (I don't mind)

Excellent for begginer with limited budget. Good bang for buck. Amazing low light pictures. Truly amazing Loved nature mode, i-flash Not for pro model s5700 and s700 are same, no difference much cheap compare to canon s3 and s5 (which has IS) Very lightweight

Fujifilm FinePix S700
5 Star Review   By member isell ubuy - Dec 10, 2007

Strengths: Very sturdy camera.. Zoom is awesome & for the price this is best camera in market.

Weakness: When I bought this available in only one color.

Fuji has always been very good in the camera business, With this Fujifilm FinePix S700 you can have very great 7 mega pixel picture within your budget. I have used very similar cameras in past but this one is gr8. I love this camera.

4 Star Review   By member santoshkhatwani - Dec 10, 2007

Strengths: price, slick design

A very nice camera. I bought it for 110$ at circuit city. It has many good features, 7 MP and 10x zoom, can not ask for better camera for the price.

Amazing camera
5 Star Review   By member anandpiyer - Dec 10, 2007

Strengths: 7.1MP, 10X optical zoom, runs on AA batteries, 2.5" LCD, takes xD and SD cards.

Weakness: A little slow, especially between shots, small viewfinder.

This is my second camera, my first being a Canon A530. I am amazed by the quality of the photos this one takes. Although you cannot compare it to a real SLR, at the price it comes this is a steal. The body is made of sturdy plastic and feels nice. One of the best budget ultrazooms!

Good price
5 Star Review   By member leemaverickly - Dec 9, 2007

Strengths: Price.

Weakness: Not SLR

I don't have much to say coz I just got it at CC. At this price, no camera can beat S700 with 10x Zoom. Besides, this camera is really good-looking.

WOW GREAT CAMERA FOR A GREAT PRICE
5 Star Review   By member vjsellers - Dec 9, 2007

Strengths: ZOOM; CLARITY; SHARPNESS

I bought this camera for 200 bucks and I am loving it. The 10x optical zoom is amazing and I am able to take pictures at a distance with good quality. I highly recommend this camera. I wish that it comes it silver as well but I have no complaints about the black one except that silver is my favorite color in electronics.

VERY pleased
5 Star Review   By member eshalon47 - Oct 2, 2007

Strengths: Great zoom, fantastic images

Weakness: Small original memory

I bought this several weeks ago and have used it frequently since. I LOVE the quality of image and the ease of use. My kids can take shots with it as well. The videos are a big plus, but the absolute best part has to be the zoom on this camera. I have really enjoyed the crispness of the photos, and the just how close I can get to things with it. The only thing I didn't care for was the small size of the memory, but I upgraded with an additional card. The card was easy to install, and since then, its worked like a dream. I have had no trouble with it at all. I had been looking at an SLR camera and this was a nice compromise between it and a standard digital. Very well worth the price.

Great Camera
5 Star Review   By member rsaji - Sep 22, 2007

Strengths: Excellent low light pictures, great zoom, low price

This is a great camera with a 10X optical Zoom. The pictures taken by it is comparable to its double prized compatitor Canon S5 IS. The low light performance is better tahn Canon S5 IS, plus its low price tag beats the Canon S5 in all respects.

amazing quality
4 Star Review   By member mikeyu - Sep 13, 2007

Strengths: can use regular battery, 10Xzoom, can use SD

Weakness: Not very nice quality when it's dark

People, this camera can use regular batteries. Four Energetix battery gave me 250 shots. The picture quality is pretty good. We took a lot of amazing pictures in yellowstone. However at night it has noises. One more thing, the flash light will pop up suddenly if you choose "auto" mode and if the light is not strong, which may scare yourself when you first use this or when your fingers are on the top of the camera. Just keep this in mind.

FinePix S700
5 Star Review   By member chorazak - Sep 11, 2007

Strengths: Great camera and very easy to use. The 10x zoom works fine for me and it is not too large to fit in my purse.

Weakness: So far, I have not found any weaknesses.

This little camera takes great pictures. The other reviewers failed to mention that you can also attache other lenses to this camera. I purchased extra filter lenses i.e. a UV filter and other polarizing lenses to make my pictures even clearer. I also purchased a slave flash that attaches to the tripod hole on the bottom, since this camera does not have a hotshoe. By using a slave flash (the kind that gets triggered off when your own internal flash goes off) you can get great indoor shots when the lighting is not the best. Also, use the new 2900 mAh rechargeable batteries and throw out any that are under 2500 mAh. The newer cameras need the higher mAh.

Better Than Expected
5 Star Review

Strengths: Able to use zoom while shooting videos, pictures as sharp as any 35mm I've owned, great color, can't buy a better camera for close-ups for the price. XD and SD memory card compatible

Weakness: Manual mode takes awhile to figure out.

After having my S5200 stolen last month,I was skeptical about what I thought was a downgrade since the S700 was $100 less than I paid for the S5200, I actually seemed to get an upgrade instead. 2 more megapixals and able to use the zoom while in video mode and smaller too. It's a best buy for sure. Might even buy a second one for back up

Fuji finepix S700 Digital Camera
5 Star Review

Strengths: Everything Else

Weakness: Shutter speed

This camera is absolutly great the only weakness is it has a shutter speed of only 1000 which is good for fast moving objects but not for taking pics. of flying birds. It has a great zoom and high megapixel. There are now also lenses available on Ebay for the product by Digital Inovations.

Finepix S700
3 Star Review   By member M3-driver - Aug 12, 2007

Strengths: 10x Zoom, SD compatible, Price, Internal Memory

Weakness: Picture Noise, No Image Stabilizer, awkward grip

I was lured by this camera because of the price and I tried Fujifilm F30 which has a good performance at low light. I just realized that S700 doesn't have the "Super CCD" like F30. It is noisy at ISO 400 and higher. The LCD screen is recessed and hard to clean. Somehow I always touch the screen when holding the camera.

Good for the Price and Quality
4 Star Review

Strengths: 10X Zoom, Excellent Macro performance, Best of Bridge Class

Weakness: Grains at Hi ISOs and Grains in Video at Room light

I have purchased this camera one month back. Im very happy with operation part of this camera. It has given amazing quality in Macro modes. It need to be more sensitive in indoors specially in room lights. Outdoors has excellent performance of this class. User friendly menus. Added manual options makes more professional. I recommend this to buy who is looking for budget and wants good photos provided some good photography skills.

Amazing Performance at an Amazing Price
5 Star Review   By member mm9351 - Jul 17, 2007

Strengths: Incredible 10X optical zoom, super macro mode can focus down to 1 cm, electronic viewfinder, can use both xD and sD cards !!!

Weakness: Uses AA batteries, need to buy optional rechargable batteries and charger, separate lens cap (easy to lose) but use the included cap tether

I bought this camera for the workplace to image electronic circuitry and so far it's been exceeding my expectations. Top mounted dial controls all functions, and a cue card help screen appears in the 2.5" LCD each time you switch a setting. The electronic viewfinder can be used instead of the large bright LCD to conserve battery power. It's ruggedly built, fits good in your hands, and feels substantial unlike other "credit card" point and shoot cameras. It also looks "pro" as a black body SLR type camera. Picture quality as good as anything else I've compared to, with the exception of Nikon's glass optics. I'm really enjoying this camera. I was upset that I didn't have xD memory cards at home and would have to buy more, but I popped in a spare SD card and it worked perfectly! Apparently Fuji installed a multipurpose slot that accepts both formats. This was an added bonus for me. Camera includes a neck strap but no case. An absolute bargain at just under $200. I highly recommend this camera!

Nice Camera
4 Star Review   By member yb2006 - Jul 12, 2007

Strengths: 10x quiet zoom, clear menu, burst shoot, light weight, AA batteries, and many others

Weakness: Operating manual focus, shutter and aperture is a bit awkward

I did a thorough research before buying a 10-12 zoom camera. Finally, I had to choose from Kodak, Panasonic and Fuji. Fuji won for several reasons. The menu is better, to my view. Zoom is packed inside the objective so nothing is moving and making noise. Zoom is easy to adjust (unlike Kodak). Movie format is avi which I prefer over quick time. Fuji, unlike Panasonic, works fine with slow cards both sd and xd. It uses 4 AA batteries so it is easy and cheap to have a backup. BTW, I was amazed by battery life. Fuji works times longer that my old small Olympus. Many useful options: two consecutive shots – one with flash and one without, bracketing: three consecutive shots taken with different exposure. The major weakness that I have noticed so far is that operating the camera in the manual mode is a little tricky. For instance, you need to press a button and to work with the zoom at the same time in order to adjust manual focus. I had hard time trying to do it with one hand. Fuji should have added a special designated knob or a wheel switch for these purposes. The most important point – pictures. Do not expect magic. The pictures are OK but you will need to work to get really great pictures. To say the truth, I did not see any stunning difference in picture quality with my old Olympus. Close-ups are great but wide-angle landscapes could be better. However, this is true for all cameras of that class (I tried Kodak and Panasonic as well). At the same time, if you are creative and prone to experiments you can get a lot from this camera. Because of its zoom, manual settings, ISO settings it has a much greater potential that regular palm-size P&S. Fuji is the most reasonably priced camera in its class. You can find it for around $210 although it is a new model (released in April 2007).

FinePix S700 Black Digital Camera
4 Star Review

Strengths: 10X optical zoom, vivid color, light weight, full function manual control.

Weakness: Noise control in high ISO mode, outside plastic feeling is not quite good.

I have played it for about one month. All in all, it can take excellent picture if everything is configured properly. Using automatic mode in dark environment most of time will get noisy pictures (it will change the ISO value to 800). Considering its relatively low price, I think it's good camera.

FinePix S700 Black Digital Camera

Strengths: With everything set properly, this camera takes bright, vibrant pictures indoors and outdoor. It performs very well in macro mode too.

Weakness: a, The plastic touches little cheap. b, Noise control on high ISO

I have just owned this camera for 4 weeks, and I didn't have much time to play with it. But I think my money was well spent. The 10X zoom is quiet and amazing.

Excellent camera, I am very impressed.
5 Star Review

Strengths: Super-macro (shoot from 1/2 inch), video with sound has PAL/NTSC playback, takes both xD and SD sticks, large LCD display. Ergonomic controls placed perfectly well for a right-handed photographer.

Weakness: Doesn't come with a carrying case or power adapter, however, for the price and features I can't complain.

I was looking for the best all purpose camera without spending a fortune. I bought it from a store where I had a chance to compare between a few models and brands. It takes pictures that are good enough to sell with about 20 built-in modes (such as sunset, fireworks, museum, snow, even text documents). Manual modes allow professionals to set shutter, aperture, etc. I travel, so the ability to playback videos and pictures on both PAL and NTSC television sets (with the included RCA audio/video cable) was the icing on the cake for me. To have good zoom, true high pixel rate and good close-ups in the same device you would normally have to go way above this price range. Look at this close-up, how it lit the subject and darkened the background. For me it pays for itself tenfold each year in the hours of Photoshop it saves me with this feature alone. Finally, a purchase with no remorse.

Weakness: video capabilities is not too good,

We have had this camera for 3 years, and it has always performed A1!!! It has been to everywhere, from warmest climates, to the coldest - and each time it took the best pictures in every weather. We paid more for it at the time, but at the price that it is going for now it cant be beat!!!

Simple to use - yet allows for complexity
4 Star Review

Strengths: easy to use, great pictures, many options available to photographers

Weakness: none except that it doesnt allow for change of lenses!! Also, it needs additional storage and the 2 GB card fits the bill

This little beauty is a wonderful camera for amateur and semi-professionals to use - it is extremely easy to use and the results are fabulous! Apart from the 7.1 MP, and 10X Zoom, the camera allows the user to set the camera to a totally automatic mode as also a totally manual mode, allowing the user to control the picture. It even allows for black and white photography - something that I have always loved and like the fact that the black and white mode is so accessible. Very easy transfer of pictures to the computer with their software. I have used the Sony DSC series (two of them) and there is no doubt that this beauty outdoes them any day. All in all - a great buy!
