DCRP Review: Nikon Coolpix S630
3.5 Star Review  DCResource - May 5, 2009

The Canon PowerShot SX1 isn't just a super zoom digital camera -- it's also a video camera capable of recording Full HD video. In the past, hybrid cameras have been just so-so, but the PowerShot SX1 takes good quality stills and very nice HD movies. Add in a rotating LCD, manual controls, snappy performance, and lots of point-and-shoot features, and you end up with a hybrid camera that's done the right way. The SX1 isn't perfect, though: it's expensive, with a low resolution EVF, bizarre manual exposure options, and images that have a bit too much purple fringing for my taste. If you need a camera capable of taking HD movies, then the PowerShot SX1 is worth a look.

Canon PowerShot SX1 IS Review
3.5 Star Review  Imaging Resource - Oct 22, 2009

Tuned for both stills and video, the Canon PowerShot SX1 continues a long line of Canon long-zoom digital cameras, but with a new twist: it uses a 10-megapxiel CMOS sensor instead of a CCD. Though this doesn't seem to improve the Canon SX1's image quality, it does enable both "Full HD" 1080p video capture and a still-image framerate of up to 4 frames per second. Its 20x zoom lens has a very useful range from 28 to 560mm equivalent, and the Canon SX1's utility is further enhanced with a 2.8-inch, wide-screen, swiveling LCD for easier image composition from odd angles. Very well built, the Canon SX1 is also fairly expensive. Is it worth the extra money? Click here for our review of the Canon PowerShot SX1 IS.

Camera Labs – Canon PowerShot SX1 IS review
4 Star Review  cameralabs.com - Feb 16, 2009

Canon's PowerShot SX1 IS is arguably one of the most technologically successful hybrid cameras to date, offering both 10 Megapixel stills and Full HD 1080p video recording in a compact body with a 20x zoom, fully articulated screen, fast continuous shooting, flash hotshoe and HDMI port. There's really very little this camera doesn't offer apart from RAW recording. If you're in the market for a single camera which offers both high quality video and stills, the SX1 IS should certainly be on your shortlist, but it's not perfect and there's a number of reasons why you may ultimately prefer the SX10 IS, or a more traditional HD camcorder. In our full review of the SX1 IS at Cameralabs, we'll weigh up the pros and cons of both options, along with directly comparing the quality against the SX10 IS and Canon's EOS 450D / XSi DSLR. We also have a video demonstrating its new features in High Definition, which includes a number of clips showing-off the camera's HD video mode.

3.5 Star Review  cnet.com - Apr 27, 2009

THE GOOD: Relatively fast; good HD video; raw file support. THE BAD: Big; quirky interface; some image artifacts. THE BOTTOM LINE: A top megazoom option, the Canon PowerShot SX1 IS offers a 20x zoom lens and HD video, which you cant get in a similarly priced dSLR, and delivers more features and slightly better performance and photo quality than the cheaper SX10 IS.

Canon SX1 IS
4 Star Review  productwiki.com - Jul 25, 2009

The Canon PowerShot SX1 IS is a successor to 2007’s PowerShot S5IS. This mid-level compact digital camera differs from its predecessor by improving several of the core features relating to image quality and performance. The SX1 IS is the first PowerShot to feature a 10 megapixel Canon CMOS sensor, which allows the camera to offer full resolution continuous shooting at 4fps, as well as 1080p HDTV video capture at 30fps. This camera also features a near-silent 20x wide-angle optical zoom. The SX1 IS also features Canon’s new DIGIC 4 image processor, which improves the camera’s motion detection capabilities by constantly adjusting the ISO and focus to prevent image blur. This camera comes with full manual controls, allowing for more advanced users to precisely tweak their photos. This camera is suitable for users who want the simplicity of a point and shoot, yet the flexibility of a more advanced manual camera in ... PROS: (1) 20x optical zoom (2) 1080p video recording (3) includes a wireless remote control for shooting and playback (4) manual control option for the aperture and shutter (5) compatible with a variety of easy to find/affordable storage memory (SD/SDHC/MMC/MMC Plus/HC MMC Plus) ... CONS: (1) Lens cap falls off easily, no tether (2) grainy in low light (3) no 720p video mode (4) no external microphone input (5) dial doesnt give feedback (too smooth, no clicks)

4 Star Review   By member jimbob84 - Mar 2, 2010

Strengths: great pictures, amazing video, awesome zoom, the screen

Weakness: battery life, auto focusing, feels small

love the camera, i've had it for about 2 months and i plan on bringing it on spring break, only hope the batteries don't run out. you can get 2-3 hours of use out of 1 set of rechargeable, so it's always good to keep a spare. the manual is a must or else you will get completely lost. HD video great and also great iso range with decent noise even at iso 1600

SX1 is good for semi-pro and standard use
4 Star Review   By member jmdavey - Mar 1, 2010

Strengths: HD Video - RAW stills in a compact form, ease of use, great lens, pretty good IS.

Weakness: Does not make pro type images at ISO 200 or greater.

I have shot tens of 1000s of stills and video over 40 years, in all formats of film and video as well as digital for the past 8 years, I spent 30 years in broadcast TV. Getting my mind wrapped around shooting with this type of camera form has been the biggest hurdle for me. I had to put my SLR and video cameras away for the past 8 months so that I could get my head and body retrained to use this camera. It's different, you can't just reach out and rack focus or change fstops or shutter speed like an SLR so I decided to retrain my brain to actually use this camera form as instinctively as I used an SLR. The camera itself takes very good pictures for the invested price and really offers advantages of smaller form, lighter weight, massive storage capabilities as well as RAW and HD video. In real life use, as a wildlife photographer, I feel a little funny standing right next to other wildlife photographers with D7s and huge lenses getting almost identical images with this really small camera. Living in South Florida I get a lot of experience showing off my images in those circles. OH yea, makes great HDRi too. Here is a photoshow with combined stills and video. Obviously this isn't full HD. www.photoshow.com/watc... Butterfly video link (HD) www.flickr.com/photos/... Still www.flickr.com/photos/...
