4 Star Review   By member robertsbor - Jul 29, 2003

Strengths: Pictures look great on my 19" monitor. Why even bother to print them.

Weakness: One bad pixel developed over time. You have to zoom in and know where to look for it, but it's always there.

I take millions of pictures because we had a baby just before I got the camera. I'm a 35mm user from way back and this is my first digital. All the pics go on the hard drive (and then onto a CD). No longer have to worry about high film processing costs and loads and loads of prints with nowhere to put them. This has worked great for me. Can print them out whenever I want. This is an advantage of any digital, but this one takes incredible pictures that look fantastic on a large monitor. The ability to take little 30 second movies is a nice touch. I recommend a very large memory card (512M), then you can go on trips and never have to change it.

Strengths: Compact design, great outdoor and scenery pictures

Weakness: Very bad red-eye and blurry night pictures. Eats battery life too fast.

Small enough to fit in your pocket and carry around anywhere. This camera has great resolution and takes awesome scenery and outdoor pictures. However, the flash is horrible and night pictures are usually either blurry or have terrible red-eye (typical of most digital cameras). A second battery is a necessity because they drain so quickly. Overall, it's been a great camera.

4 Star Review   By member putnams - Dec 10, 2002

Strengths: Excellent resolution. Covered lense. Good pictures.

Weakness: Little slow. Higher optical resolution would be nice.

Overall, I am quite pleased with this camera. I bought an extra battery and 2 ea, 128MB cards. Never have any problems with battery life, nor capacity. Photo quality is excellent. The covered lens is a "God Sent", and I am extremely happy I changed to a camera with that capability. The camera is compact, logical, and takes great pictures. Good Buy!

Strengths: Compact design, All aluminum case, Excellent cover on/off switch.

Weakness: Horrible battery life, poor macro focusing.

This tiny package contains tons of features. So far i've been quite satisfied with this camera. The only thing that bothers me most is the short battery life. Other than that it is an excellent choice.

5 Star Review   By member JimCravens - Oct 6, 2002

Strengths: Sleek, functional and extremely well made. Outstanding picture quality with great ease of use.

Weakness: Just try and find a weakness!

This camera is a must have. 4 megapixels of visually breath-taking pictures. I bought an extra battery and a 256Mb flash card. I've looked at and used numerous other digital cameras. Size, durability, ease-of-use and picture quality make this camera the hands-down winner. You owe it to yourself to at least look at this camera. Forget the other manufacturers, Canon owns this segment of the market. While you're at it, Canon's S520 color printer gives photo quality printing in a general inkjet printer at around $100. It is the perfect companion to the PowerShot S40 camera. Checkout both of these winners...you won't regret it!

Strengths: Bottom line is that this camera has taken great shots for me.

Weakness: Haven't encountered any as of yet.

I am totaly satisfied and would buy again. So far Canon is the top dog when it comes to digital photography. I shopped these cameras for about three months before I decided on the S-40.

4 Star Review   By member jmarkisz - Aug 15, 2002

Strengths: Easy to use and small form factor.

Weakness: Short battery life and only ships with a 16MB Flash Card.

After researching several digital cameras, I decided on the Cannon S40 for the following: small size, durable metal case, excellent 4 mega pixel print quality, and ease of use. This is my first digital camera, moving from a 35mm camera and I'm very happy with the change. If you purchase one, I'd recommend the following: extra battery (to ensure you always have a battery when needed), larger Flash Card (40MB >) and USB Microtech Snapshot cable for downloads (no camera needed for downloads). I now want to purchase the underwater optional case (which is another great feature).

5 Star Review   By member wahl04 - Aug 14, 2002

Strengths: Stainless steel case, Covered lens, larger clear viewing screen, SLR like manual controls (iso, F-stop, etc.), 4mega pixels, great color, and superb Macro detail, Panarama photos, and video recording

Weakness: Heavy & eats batteries for lunch

I have owned a few digitals in the past and the S40 by far takes the best pictures and is the funnest to use. The only thing I would recommend is to carry and extra fully charged battery if you plan on using any CF card over 64mb..........One tip: When you are shooting a bunch of photos, turn off the display screen...this will conserve a large amount of your battery consumption! Have fun

Strengths: Patient, knowledgable human service on the other end of the phone to help me, the camera novice. Thanks Harry!

I chose to purchase my Canon Powershot S40 through this company, (even though their price was slightly higher than some of the other merchants) because their merchant reviews were very good. So far I agree; their customer service has been great. Hopefully the camera will be too!

Strengths: Excellent photo quality, well built

Weakness: Some of the controls are not placed very well - not "intuitive"

We evaluated 9 digital cameras for our publishing company and this model was considered one of the top 3. Excellent picture quality, even when making enlargements. To see an actual image taken from this camera, you can go to the web site below (These are NOT compensated endorsements). What's interesing is that if you compare it with the other models, there's virtually no difference in picture quality. www.clpress.com/produc...

5 Star Review   By member teliaja - Jun 30, 2002

Strengths: This camera is compact and easy to use. I like the full metal case. The flash does a great job. The included software is great software.

Weakness: No battery indicator. Expensive batteries.

I purchased this camera for underwater photography.(Canon makes an underwater housing specificaly for this camera). I have not yet been diving with it but I have been having a great time with it. So far I find it takes fantastic pictures all around. I have found that when taking indoor pictures of people or pets a flash ruins the atmosphere not to mention the red eye effect. I often don't use the flash and use the software to compensate the lack of light with great results, thereby creating a much more realistic scene. I did have a problem just recently with the zoombrowser software that I spent hours trying to resolve and could not fix. I ended up having to do a total restore on my computer to get it fixed. I e-mailed Canon and they did not respond. I suspect it was a compatibilty problem with Windows XP. Other than that the software works fantastic. The zoombrowser was working fine untill for no reason it just got hijacked. Keep you're pictures backed up!!!

5 Star Review   By member Noah_Mercy - Jun 10, 2002

Strengths: Quality design and build, many useful features, point and shoot size w/awesome results. This produces PHOTO output at 8x10.

Weakness: Expensive, proprietary NiCad battery (US$60 street), small therefore low f-stop lens.

GREAT PRODUCT. Survived a 3.5ft drop directly onto the concrete in my driveway (clumsy friend). A little dinted and scratched up, but still works great. I have taken over 1,000 photos since X-mas. Colors are a little light (over-exposed looking) but digital darkroom adj makes them sparkle. I recommend ACDsee's AutoLevels exposure adjustment option strongly. It includes batch support so you can correct all 100+ photos from your 128Meg Flashcard. Good software included but the ZoomBrowser becomes a pain in the a$$ because it tries to maintain it's own database. When you move stuff around in Explorer it has to reconstruct the database eachtime, very annoying. I gave up using it even though it's cool in favor of ACDsee (excellent powersuit software for managing, editing digital photos, also makes great autoplay slideshows w/sound).

Strengths: 4 megapixels

Weakness: compare with pics done with the powershot s30 which is 3 megapixels, the s30 is much crisper than the s40

I compared pictures taken with the s40 and the s30 which is essentially the same camera except for the s40 is 4 megapix and s30 is 3 megapix. The s30 pix are much better in clarity and color. Very peculiar!

Strengths: compact size, lots of features, excellent picture quality and highly customizable. Prosumer quality in a very compact size.

Weakness: The interface takes a little while getting used to.

Very nice solid camera with lots of features. I especially like its size and ability to shoot short movies... Among other features is spot metering, the auto focus and manual focus are outstanding, as is the digital zoom. The camera compares nicely with other camera of its class. Highly recommend.

EASY TO USE. STILL SHOTS ARE WONDERFUL, PIXELS MAKE THE PICTURES EXCELLENT, DOWNLOADING IS A SNAP AND THE ZOOM ON THIS CAMERA MAKES THIS CAMERA SIMPLY OUT CLASS ALL OTHER CAMERAS AT THIS A REASONABLE PRICE. THIS CAMERA MAKES FOR A NICE GIFT.

4 Star Review   By member Grumpyanimal - Feb 5, 2002

Strengths: Good pictures. Auto mode is handy and easy to use. Manual Mode has many features and will satify the need of more experienced photographers. Takes CF Type II cards as well.

Weakness: A little heavy for its size. Doesnt use AA or AAA batteries. Can be a problem if you only own 1 battery. Movie clips limited to 30 sec per shoot. Cursor Control button hard to use.

Despite its weight and battery type, I rate this camera a must buy. It would appeal to both amateurs and also more seasoned photographers. It comes packed with features and options. I find the lens quality above average and the 3X zoom adequate for the camera size. Handling the camera with one hand is comfortable and stable, despite its size and rectangular shape. I suggest getting two batteries and a large Compact Flash (CF) card (ie: 64MB or more) This camera is a keeper.
