DCRP Review: Canon EOS-5D Mark II
4.5 Star Review  DCResource - Apr 18, 2009

The Canon EOS-5D Mark II is a solid upgrade to its predecessor, and a great choice for Canon users looking to step up to a full-frame body. The Mark II has a whopping 21.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor (which isn't without a few issues), great build quality, full manual controls, HD movie recording, and more accessories than you could possibly afford. There aren't a lot of negatives, but they're all important ones. Images straight out of the camera are quite soft, though your choice of lens has at least some role in that. You'll also find some detail smudging from noise reduction at low ISOs in some photos, proving that compact cameras aren't the only one with this problem. While the Mark II's HD movie mode is very cool, the lack of continuous autofocus makes recording a challenge. Finally, the 5D lags behind its two main competitors -- the Nikon D700 and Sony Alpha DSLR-A900 -- in terms of battery life and continuous shooting performance. Despite those issues, the 5D Mark II is still a heck of a camera, and one that is easy to recommend.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II Review
5 Star Review  Imaging Resource - Jan 20, 2009

Canon has been adding something special to each of their new digital SLRs, something that sets the camera apart from the pack. This time, the something special is the HD movie mode in the Canon EOS 5D Mark II. Capable of capturing 1080p movies, the new camera opens up a whole world of video opportunities for those with a selection of Canon full-frame lenses -- from capturing extreme wide angles to isolating subjects with long telephoto, the 5D Mark II is truly a video artist's tool. Of course, the 5D Mark II also has the goods for the more traditional still photographer, offering a 21.1-megapixel sensor, a tuned version of the sensor in the Canon 1Ds Mark III. Now the 5D Mark II's sensor has significantly better high ISO performance, able to produce nearly noise-free images up to ISO 6,400. If you can handle a little noise, you can even reach out to 25,600. The Canon EOS 5D Mark II's new high resolution LCD delivers a fine 640x480 image for better focus checking and a great image in Live View mode. The whole package comes in below the price of competing full-frame digital SLRs, at $2,699. Click below to read our full review of the Canon EOS 5D Mark II.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II Digital Camera Review
5 Star Review  Digitalcamerainfo.com - Feb 9, 2009

When Canon introduced the EOS 5D in August 2005 it was one of only two full-frame digital SLRs available (along with Canon's own 1D Mark II). Three years later, though, Nikon and Sony both offer attractive full-frame alternatives that leave the 12.8-megapixel 5D looking a bit antique. Now Canon strikes back with the EOS 5D Mark II, ramping up resolution to 21.1 megapixels, jumping two processor generations ahead of its full-frame forefather and blazing a new trail as the first digital SLR to offer full 1080p video shooting. The 5D Mark II lists for $2699 for the body alone, or $3499 with the 24-105mm f/4L IS USM image-stabilized lens shown here. Overall we were much impressed with the 5D Mark II, which scored exceptionally well in our color and dynamic range testing, and produced excellent video quality. Less experienced photographers will be put off by the depth of controls and lack of training wheels (and we admit to wishing a pop-up flash was built in), but sophisticated users will prize the level of customizability and control offered by the 5D Mark II.

Canon Still Camera and Canon High Definition Camcorder in one
5 Star Review  videomaker.com - Dec 31, 1969

DSLR in Motion We have to admit that when we first heard of a Digital SLR camera also shooting video, our first thought was "novelty," but now that we've had the chance to play with the new Canon 5D Mark II, our thoughts have changed quite a bit. With Live view, full HD 1080p video and an outstanding full-frame 35mm sensor, this camera could be the start of a new and permanent trend. Let's take a closer look at this digital still camera from a videographer's perspective. Camera Labs – Canon EOS 5D Mark II review
4.5 Star Review  cameralabs.com - Dec 15, 2008

Canon's EOS 5D Mark II is a powerful and feature-packed DSLR that represents a significant upgrade over the original 5D, and a tough rival in the growing 'affordable' full-frame market. The new Mark II may share essentially the same body and AF system as its predecessor, but almost everything else has been upgraded. The 21.1 Megapixel sensor is capable of recording a huge amount of detail given a decent lens, and the 3in VGA screen is a big improvement over its predecessor. The new movie mode is also very impressive, although a number of caveats mean it's unsuitable as a replacement for a normal camcorder and casual filming technique. Normal photos are not without faults too, including the now infamous black dot issue which could be a problem if you shoot at night. In our full review of the EOS 5D Mark II at Cameralabs, we've tested all the new features, explained how to make the most of the movie mode, and provided comparisons against its two main rivals, the Sony A900 and Nikon D700. We also have examples of the black dot problem and who it'll affect, so to find out if this is the right full-frame DSLR for you, check out our review.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II (body only)
4 Star Review  cnet.com - Jan 28, 2009

THE GOOD: Excellent performance and photo quality; good video capture capabilities and quality. THE BAD: No built-in wireless controller; large spot meter; no built-in flash; more direct controls would be nice; AF system could use an update. THE BOTTOM LINE: A great follow-up to the 5D and top-flight full-frame camera, the Canon EOS 5D Mark II delivers the fluid shooting experience and fine photos you expect from a professional model.

I have been waiting to get this camera and I'm so happy that I did. At first when I heard it was a demo, I'm not going to lie, it made me nervous, but it's perfect (and it didn't hurt that there were less than 3K shutter clicks on it either!!) Very happy with my purchase; Adorama is always my go to store for all of my gear.

Its Borderline Cinema & Great Photos Too
4 Star Review   By Neptune's Blues on Adorama - Apr 23, 2013

I also own a 60D that utilizes EF and non EF lenses. However, it appears the 5D makes the best possible use of the EF lenses as the images appear even stronger detailed when it comes to the photo side of the camera. In terms of the video, the EF lenses also compliment this effort as well. For those of us that are familiar with using 35mm cameras in fully manual mode, it is an interesting way to shoot video, if you like that sort of thing. This mode also gives you full creative abilities, including the ability to shoot in black and white.

5 Star Review   By Miriam on Adorama - Apr 2, 2013

Went with this over the Mark III, because it has all the features I need, and was slightly less cumbersome than the Mark III. It is a great camera. I am using a 100mm macro and an 85mm prime with it, and the shots come out beautiful. It's a great portrait and outdoor camera, and does excellent in low-light and also in cold temperatures. Battery life seems reasonably good in cold temperatures too.

4 Star Review   By Oz on Adorama - Mar 19, 2013

I made a decision to move into the world of digital photography some years ago, shelving my film based cameras for the flagship full size sensor Canon 5D. I've had no regrets with that decision. Recently I decided to make a move to the 5D mkII and again I'm very pleased. What I like most is that I have not had to "re-learn" the camera's functions layout. If the days arises when I can justify investing again my choice woul without doubt, be the Mk III. It can only keep getting better.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II | Body Only
4 Star Review  productwiki.com - Feb 7, 2010

Announced on September 16th 2008, the EOS 5D Mark II is Canons successor to the EOS 5D, the worlds first compact full frame digital SLR. The EOS 5D Mark II boasts a new 21MP CMOS sensor, an expanded ISO range of 50-25,600 and a wealth of improvements and new features including full 1080p HD movie recording, live view, 3.0" 920k dot LCD, DIGIC IV processor, increased battery capacity and sensor dust reduction. A January 2009 firmware update (1.0.7) fixes a problem with vertical banding noise when recording in sRAW1 as well as the "black dot" phenomenon noticed soon after the camera was released to the public. ... PROS: (1) 21MP CMOS sensor (2) 1080p HD movie recording (3) Wide range ISO setting (100-6400) (4) Live View - 3." 920k dot LCD (5) Increased Battery Capacity ... CONS: (1) 1080p30 is nice, but 1080p60 would be better (2) HD Video capture up to 4GB per clip (3) expensive (4) 1080p video focussing only by pressing AF-ON button - resulting in chronically unfocused movies (5) no popup flash (for quick surprise shots)

I've owned Canon's 10d, 20d, 30d, 40d, 50d and 60d. I finally bought the Mark II since they are so reasonably priced right now and I couldn't be happier. It's focusing capability is amazing, the quality of the images are much better, and I'm happy to finally be working with a full sensor. Best of all, it does amazing work with my 580EX II, giving me perfect flash lighting!

4 Star Review   By Limited vision on Adorama - Mar 12, 2013

I would not be able to afford this new but Adorama's used cameras are truly well inspected and everything works as expected. This camera is dated but its quality is not. A supreme value used at a great price. I was so impressed I also recently got the 7D also at a great price now I can shoot anything.

Perfect for a varied photog's arsenal
5 Star Review   By LC on Adorama - Mar 5, 2013

Zero regrets! While yes, its successor is probably of greater range and quality, I have absolutely no qualms with this terrific camera. It packs a whole lot of punch into a relatively small body and for my budget. I have taken beautiful, clear, color-accurate and CRISP shots of the night sky, portraits, interiors, exteriors, and products. As a photographer shooting in all kinds of light and with all kinds of subjects, it's a perfect all-rounder. Couldn't be happier! Even the shutter sounds sexy.

Nice camera
5 Star Review   By Ed on Adorama - Feb 27, 2013

I had been using the original 5D and wanted a newer model mainly for the higher ISO qualities. Thus far, I have not been disappointed with the 5D Mark II, which is vitally important when using it on a daily basis and can't afford to have a piece of gear break down. I would say the only thing I didn't initially like was that some of the features were in different places, which took a few days to get used to.

I upgraded from the Canon t2i to this camera and am surprised at how much I love this camera. I honestly didn't think I'd see much of a difference but I wanted to start using a full frame camera. It is very easy to navigate all of the settings and menu, and the image quality is great!

Great camera and service- ADORAMA
5 Star Review   By Frank on Adorama - Feb 5, 2013

The quality and flexibility of the EOS5DMKII far exceeds my previous Canon camera, an EOS20D. Video as well as the lack of noise at high ISO and superior resolution are the main improvements. The customer service was outstanding especially after encountering problems with the first camera. A replacement arrived 2 days after the return. Would not hesitate to recommend the EOS5D II or Adorama to anyone interested in serious photography.

First full-frame dSLR
4 Star Review   By Stubbs on Adorama - Jan 25, 2013

I've only owned the 5D mkII for a few weeks now. I'm not sure I can add anything useful to the myriad reviews that are available for this workhorse of a camera. The first two things I enjoy about it are the full-frame coverage (I've used a Canon 50D w/ crop sensor now for 2 years) and the ability to shoot in lower light. I recently shot an event where I never went below ISO 800 (w/ Canon's 50mm 1.2L)and had very good image quality. The lighting for the event could only be described as "challenging". If you're considering making the jump to full-frame, I don't see how you could go wrong with a 5D mkII.

Finally affordable!
5 Star Review   By Rolleiman on Adorama - Jan 17, 2013

The first digital camera, "XTI" was used to take preview shots for products and modeling before using large format film. The 5D MKII was used for first and final shots of the same subjects, plus live action short films. They both took away much of the difficult "how to" part of creative shots, allowing the time to concentrate on lighting and content. Amazing technology that I'll use and not take for granted after doing things the hard way for too many years.

I've been waiting for a while...
4 Star Review   By Adam_Carner on Adorama - Jan 17, 2013

I'm a professional merchandise photographer for a music and entertainment company. We use this camera at work with the 24-70 L Series lens. Beautiful results with RAW image editing and uncompressed files. I have wanted this camera since it came out. I had a 60D and after working all day with the 5D MKII, it was hard to go back to. So I sold my 60D and upgraded! Best choice I have made. The ruggedness of this camera body is unparalleled. The sensor is nice and big. Full-frame which gives room to crop down and not lose image quality. One thing that I do miss from my 60D is the ability to remote sync my Speedlite flash from within the camera without the need for another accessory. Other than that, I love everything about this 5DMKII and am extremely happy with the purchase. I Give 4-Stars because as much as I love this camera, if I could afford it, i would have gotten the 1DX

Canon 5D MK II is Awesome!
5 Star Review   By Mamaof3 on Adorama - Jan 17, 2013

The Canon 5D MK II is a great camera if you like it to be sturdy and durable. It does great in low light with the right kind of lens of course. It's a pretty heavy camera so it's not really a to go like a point and shoot. But if you care what your photographs will look like, you should go for it! As any photographer who doesn't care of how heavy their equipments can be, I would HIGHLY recommend this camera. Only downside is it doesn't have on camera flash.

4 Star Review   By admirephotography on Adorama - Jan 7, 2013

I upgraded from the 60D and can't believe how much it was holding me back. The high ISO capabilities make an enormous difference. The noise that I would get at ISO 400 doesn't seem to show up until about ISO 2000 on this camera. I absolutely love having a full frame camera.

Canon 5D MKII
4 Star Review   By chmiel-photo on Adorama - Dec 17, 2012

With the release of the MKIII this camera's low price makes it a great deal and accessible to those of us who dont have budgets for top-of-the-line gear. This camera has been used by pros for many years now and will likely continue to be a reliable workhorse for professional photographers for years to come. 4 Stars only because there is a newer version with better performance.

Finally the Image Quality Dreamed About
5 Star Review   By ChE on Adorama - Sep 24, 2012

I upgraded from a 40D and really have appreciated the 40D, but the image quality and full frame sensor to maximize L-series lenses has been a delightful surprise with the 5D MarkII. I can finally take a full body shot and zoom into all the detail I have wanted to see. The camera is a little on the heavy side with battery grip and both batteries, but the quality is worth hauling the weight around.

Great Pro-sumer body!
5 Star Review   By Ironmind on Adorama - Aug 27, 2012

This was a great gift, and has gotten me into Photography in a big way. The image quality is awesome and is probably more limited by lens quality than anything else. The only con is the AF system, which is much improved in the MKIII. However, if you are not shooting sports or fast moving subjects this is definitely the body to go with!

Best camera ever!
4 Star Review   By Joy on Adorama - May 14, 2012

Being a wedding photographer, I am continually asked not to use flash during the ceremony. With the 5D's great image quality at high ISOs I am confidant that I can keep the priest happy and the bride because her images will look clear and beautiful and I will not miss a shot or have to re-stage a shot because it's to dark.

Works exactly as advertised
4 Star Review   By Michael Wise on Adorama - May 14, 2012

As expected, this camera works perfectly as a backup to a more pro body. The battery life is phenomenal, the image quality is more than acceptable, and some of the enhancements to the interface are very welcome compared to the original 5D (although I still personally prefer the images produced by the original 5D). I don't use this camera for video, so I can't speak to its uses that way, but if you were to want to shoot both still and video, I believe this could be a useful feature. Definitely a recommended piece of kit in my bag :)

2008 Game Changer and Still Going Strong
4 Star Review   By Swell36 on Adorama - Apr 23, 2012

When the 5D2 was released in 2008 it was a game changer and if played to its strengths today it remains one of the best. My primary use for this camera is landscape/scenery photography. However it's not bad for still and slower moving wildlife photos. When combined with quality lenses and all but the dimmest of light the results are predictable and stunning. It is well built and reasonably light weight for a full frame DSLR. If you own Canon glass and have considered going to a full frame sensor camera now is the time. New 5D2 availability is waning.

Awesome Used Product
4 Star Review   By Mo! on Adorama - Apr 18, 2012

I upgraded to this used (new to me!) Canon 5D Mark II after 7 years of using the Canon 20D. The 20D was a great camera, but I grew out of its capabilities and wanted something a bit meatier. I took advantage of photogs selling their Mark IIs after the Mark III was released, and got this gently used model from Adorama. It is in great shape (just a few rubs/scratches on the body..E- rating, I think), and works beautifully. Its first use was at a burlesque show in the back room of a dive bar- even with my old(er) lenses, the camera performed BEAUTIFULLY in the low light, capturing a lot of clear photos of quick moving ladies. I also brought it out to a weekend vacationing in Marin and Sonoma counties, and it took beautiful landscapes, and portraits of my mom. My one frustration, which isn't the fault of the camera body, is that my older Canon and Tamron lenses don't have a super fast, or accurate, auto focus. In fact, it was easier, and more accurate, to manually focus while taking portraits and landscapes. Also, it seems like only CS5 and older is capable of opening RAW images from the Mark II without the Adobe conversion tool. Again, this is less an issue with the camera, and more an issue with my outdated technology (I use CS3). I'm thrilled with my gently used Mark II, and am grateful to Adorama for reselling it to me!

Glad I bought it.
5 Star Review   By Mitch on Adorama - Apr 16, 2012

I bought this camera a few weeks before I was to shoot a graduation ceremony for a local high school. The 5D Mark II was a replacement for my Canon A2e film camera. I'm glad I bought it. Being familiar with Canon, I was able to quickly learn the controls etc on the 5D Mark II. I was amazed at the quality of the pictures. I shot the speakers on stage at the ceremony w/o flash at 800 ISO and a 70-200L ISlens. After the ceremony I shot several candids with my 430EX II speedlight under a variety of lighting-mostly poor lighting. I was very well pleased with the results. I have since used this camera to photograph high school seniors, wildlife, weddings, bands and families. I'll probably upgrade to the Mark III but the Mark II has served me very well.

You must get this camera!
5 Star Review   By Bob on Adorama - Apr 16, 2012

I bought this body as a step of from a cropped sensor camera and I have to say that I'm thoroughly pleased. The image quality this camera produces is just stunning...creamy and gooey backgrounds, tack sharp focus...just fantastic. Although others have complained that the AF sucks, I found it to be very good, I've not had to hunt for focus even in pretty low light nor have I had "bad" focus issues. Now that the MK III is out this is a bargain for what I paid for it.

What did I ever do with out this???
5 Star Review   By Simply Happy Photo on Adorama - Apr 16, 2012

Everything about this camera is Amazing!! I'm used to shooting a t1i & 60d camera. The Full frame makes the BIGGEST difference. Noise(even though its four years old its still way better than 60d), color, and especially bokeh is SO much richer. The ONLY negative thing i could say about it is the autofocus on backlit subjects can be a little hard to control. when paired with 50m prime,24-70 or the 70-200 its a deadly combo.

very good
5 Star Review   By MS on Adorama - Mar 13, 2012

Bought it to do business video, but love it for personal stills. The AF is dated but I'm not finding that to be much problem. I shoot only f2.8 and faster glass and that seems to be the key for good AF performance. This body is still the best full frame for this price point and though the 5D3 is better, for me it didn't warrant the extra $1500...

4 Star Review   By bill on Adorama - Feb 28, 2012

Great camera although I find it has a hard time focusing in low light conditions. Excellent image quality when it does acquire, so no real complaints. I so wish Canon would expand the AEB range to 5 or 7 images though, come on Canon, it's just a firmware thing and it's becoming much more common these days with HDR photography.

My first outing with this camera was a friend's wedding. The wedding photographer was using a T2i with EF 70-200 f/4 L ism lens & the kit lens. Not a bad camera, but no comparison to the 5DmkII with EF 135mm F/2 L & 50mm f/1.8. The color's this camera picks up is second to none. Long story short, this amateur is booked thru March.

4 Star Review   By Kel G on Adorama - Feb 13, 2012

Overall, this is a great camera and I would recommend it. I love most of the images I get out of it and it's very easy to use. It handles ISO well. I will say, however, that I have had focus issues with it. I have sent it in, only to hear there was nothing wrong with it. I have micro-calibrated my lenses numerous times and still have issues. My 40D focuses better than this body. Not sure what's wrong, but it's my only hang-up with this body. If that wasn't an issue, I'd be a happy girl.

4 Star Review   By Alison on Adorama - Feb 13, 2012

I use this camera for newborn portraits, and after using a Canon 50D, this camera is a dream indoors. The high ISO's a often need indoors are no problem. Images are still creamy and smooth, whereas the 50D was pushed to it's limits. The full frame sensor has made a huge difference as well. Very, very pleased with my camera!

I owned the Canon 50D before the Mark II, and indoors in my own house I would have to shoot at 5000 ISO or H1 on the 50D to get proper exposure, I ended up with tons of noise. With my Mark, I'm shooting at 500-640 ISO in the same lighting and my images are properly exposed without noise. I just love the clarity and the full frame with my 50mm f/1.4 is a dream!

Great camera, BUT...
4 Star Review   By Kant Yin on Adorama - Feb 6, 2012

It is a great product, no doubt. However, it is not perfect. First of all, it is really heavy and bulk. I bough a 24-70 lens for this body, and it turned out to be too heavy to hold them for long time. It is really not a good new for travelling. Second thing I don't like is its noisy reflection mirror. I was surprised by its loudness the first time. And to be honest, the sound is a little annoying. Another thing is that you can easily feel the shock caused by this reflection mirror. This is not a good news for low-speed shooting.

All about image quality
4 Star Review   By Luft Creative on Adorama - Feb 6, 2012

This is my main camera for work. I use a 5D Classic as back up. The most important thing to me is ISO performance, image quality and accurate center AF. This camera has definitely pleased me! The button & feature layout is quite basic which means, I can access and change my settings quite fast. Center AF is quite accurate but could always be better. For those of you who are on the fence between this and the D700. Weigh out each spec and see if it'll actually aid you in becoming a better photographer. I focused entirely on image quality and haven't been disappointed with my purchase so far! What I wish this camera had was better weather sealing (not an issue yet) and better auto focusing (or at least an AF assist lamp). Shooting dark weddings can be difficult but my speedlite's AF assist beam has proven extremely helpful. I also wish they'd include in their sRAW settings to match their competitor's of 12megapixels. I believe it allows me to set mine to 21mp, 9mp and 5mp.

Love
5 Star Review   By Jess on Adorama - Feb 5, 2012

Absolutely the best camera I have ever used. It came with me to Iceland along with a few Canon L lenses and it performed better than I had anticipated. Fast, quiet, relatively light, and amazing results with L lenses. It performed without a hitch in the extreme conditions of an Icelandic winter including capturing amazing photos of the aurora borealis. I have absolutely no complaints about this camera!

Great Image Quality
4 Star Review   By Mike on Adorama - Feb 3, 2012

I upgraded from a Canon 40D. The difference is night and day. It is slightly bigger and heavier. The LCD is way better. It is brighter and more clear. There is a lot less noise at higher ISOs. The only downsides about the 5D are that the continuous burst shooting is very slow (I didn't believe people when they said it was slow but once you try it out, it is slowww), there is no flash, and the shutter is significantly louder than my 40D. Unless you are shooting sports, the negatives about the 5D shouldn't be a problem. If image quality is what you care about, this is the camera to get! If you are shooting action and need those quick bursts, I would not recommend buying this camera. I would give it 5 stars if the burst was atleast as fast as the 40D.

A Camera With Great Flexibility
5 Star Review   By An Old Photographer on Adorama - Jan 29, 2012

Before I made any comments about the 5D, I wanted to use the camera in a variety of situations. I bought it for its large format size sensor and for 50 to 25,000 ISO range because I shoot without flash in low light situations and I wanted to use it with long exposures. I have used it to capture fall color at 50 ISO with HDR in RAW. The resulting photos are crystal clear with great color saturation. I used in wedding photography capturing the ceremony in available light at ISO 1000, sharp images with very little noise. I photographed a candle light service at very high ISO, with color noise apparent in shaddow areas, but the resulting images were acceptable for the purpose. I wanted the full frame sensor for my landscape work and I love the detail I get. I do a lot of bird photography, again detail is outstanding. I did not buy the camera for video as I am only interested in still photography.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II (Body only)
4 Star Review   Crutchfield.com

Crutchfield has collected 8 user reviews for this product with an average rating of 4.9 out of 5 stars. The most recent reviewer said, "I have been shooting (mostly landscapes) with a Canon T1i since that model first came out and have purchased several lens since. Though satisfied, I wanted to step up to a full frame sensor. The 5D mark II has more than lived up to my expectations."

Great system foundation body!
5 Star Review   By med-i on Adorama - Jan 23, 2012

The MKII will not disappoint, even the most jaded, will be pushed back at the size and quality of the sensor. Great feel for big hands people like me, for more control and versatility, get the battery grip while you're at it. You'll be glad you did...

Awesome camera

I have two of these and love them. I guess the only improvement would be if somehow the body could be magically lighter.

awesome camera
5 Star Review   By Joshua on Adorama - Jan 16, 2012

I've been a Nikon user for 27 yrs. and this is my first Canon camera. I like the full frame sensor like my Nikon D700 as it produces rich colorful photos even at high ISO settings. The HD video is very crisp.
